今日きょうは言語げんごと文化ぶんかについて話はなしたいと思おもいます。
Today I want to talk about language and culture.
言語げんご学習がくしゅうをする時ときによく聞きくのが、
What you often hear when learning a language is,
自分じぶんの言いいたいことをそのまま直訳ちょくやくしたら言いいたいことが伝つたわる、
if you translate what you want to say directly as-is, what you want to say will get across,
こう考かんがえる人ひとが多おおいんですね。
many people think like this.
でも実際じっさいは直訳ちょくやくすれば必かならず意味いみが伝つたわるとは限かぎらないんです。
But in reality, just translating literally doesn't necessarily mean the meaning will get across.
なので今日きょうは
So today,
どうして
why
直訳ちょくやくしても意味いみが伝つたわらないことがあるのかについて、もう少すこし詳くわしく話はなしたいと思おもいます。
there are times when the meaning doesn't get across even if you translate literally, I want to talk about that in a bit more detail.
具体的ぐたいてきな例れいを出だしながら話はなしたいと思おもいます。
I want to talk while giving specific examples.
例たとえばすごいよく聞きく例れいで言いうと、特とくに英語えいごを話はなしている人ひとは挨拶あいさつをする時ときに「How are you?
For example, a very commonly heard example, especially English speakers when greeting say "How are you?
」っていう挨拶あいさつをしますよね。
" right.
なので初心者しょしんしゃの、日本語にっぽんごを始はじめてすぐの人ひとはよくこの質問しつもんをするんですね。「How are you?
So beginners, people who just started Japanese often ask this question. "How are you?
」って日本語にっぽんごではどうやって言ゆうんですか。
" How do you say that in Japanese.
で大体だいたいこの答こたえは教科書きょうかしょとかインターネットで「元気げんきですか」って出でてくるんですね。
And usually the answer comes up in textbooks or on the internet as "Genki desu ka".
でもじゃあ「How are you?
But then if the meaning of "How are you?
」の意味いみが元気げんきですかなら、本当ほんとうに日本人にほんじんは毎日まいにち
" is Genki desu ka, do you really think Japanese people every day
友達ともだちとか同僚どうりょうとか先生せんせいに会あった時ときに元気げんきですかって毎回まいかい聞きくと思おもいますか。
when they meet friends or coworkers or teachers, ask Genki desu ka every time.
実じつはあまり使つかわないんですよ。
Actually, we don't really use it.
なので元気げんきですかの意味いみ・翻訳ほんやくが「How are you?
So just because the meaning / translation of Genki desu ka is "How are you?
」だからといって日本にほんでも同おなじような使つかい方かたをするとは限かぎらないんですね。
" that doesn't mean it's used in the same way in Japan.
日本にほんでは使つかわれ方かたも違ちがうし、使つかわれる頻度ひんども全然ぜんぜん違ちがいます。
In Japan, both how it's used is different, and how often it's used is completely different.
なので何なにが大事だいじなのかというと、直訳ちょくやくイコール自然しぜんな表現ひょうげんではないんです。
So what's important is, literal translation does not equal natural expression.
もちろん皆みなさんが日本人にほんじんの人ひとに元気げんきですかって質問しつもんしたら意味いみはわかります。
Of course if you ask a Japanese person Genki desu ka, they will understand the meaning.
もちろん意味いみはわかります。
Of course they will understand the meaning.
で皆みなさんが何なにを言いいたいかも多分たぶんほとんどの日本人にほんじんはわかると思おもいます。
And what you want to say, I think most Japanese people will probably understand.
ただ日本人にほんじんのネイティブ同士どうしで同おなじような
But if asked whether native Japanese speakers would have the same kind of
会話かいわをするかと言いわれると少すこし珍めずらしいんじゃないかなと思おもいます。
conversation among themselves, I think it would be a bit unusual.
不自然ふしぜんに感かんじる人ひとが多おおいような気きがします。
I feel like many people would find it unnatural.
実際じっさい「元気げんきですか」っていうフレーズは僕ぼくはほとんど使つかいません。
Actually, I almost never use the phrase "Genki desu ka".
例たとえば久ひさしぶりに会あった友達ともだちに「元気げんきだった？
For example, to a friend I haven't seen in a while I might ask "Genki datta?
」、「元気げんきしてた？
", "Genki shiteta?
」って聞きくことはありますけど、もう毎日まいにちのように会あってるのに毎日毎日まいにちまいにち挨拶あいさつの時ときに「元気げんきですか」とは聞ききません。
" but even though I see someone almost every day, I don't ask "Genki desu ka" every day as a greeting.
そのぐらい使つかわれないフレーズなんですね。
It's a phrase that is that unused.
だからここをしっかり押おさえておきたいですね。
So I want you to keep this point firmly in mind.
直訳ちょくやくしたからといってそれが自然しぜんな表現ひょうげんとは限かぎりません。
Just because you translated literally doesn't mean it's a natural expression.
他ほかにも例れいがあります。
There are other examples.
これはよく日本人にほんじんで外国語がいこくごを学まなんでいる人ひとがする質問しつもんなんですけど「お疲つかれ様さまです」って
This is a question Japanese people learning foreign languages often ask: "Otsukaresama desu"
あなたの言語げんごでなんて言ゆうんですか。
how do you say it in your language.
例たとえば「お疲つかれ様さまです」って英語えいごでなんて言ゆうんですかって質問しつもんする日本人にほんじんが多おおいと思おもうんですね。
For example, I think many Japanese people ask how do you say "Otsukaresama desu" in English.
でお疲つかれ様さまですを英語えいごに訳やくすと
And if you translate Otsukaresama desu into English,
多分たぶん「Good job」とか「Good work」
probably "Good job" or "Good work"
みたいな言葉ことば
it would be translated into words like that,
に訳やくされると思おもうんですけど、日本人にほんじんは「お疲つかれ様さまです」をどちらかというと挨拶あいさつみたいに使つかうんですね。
but Japanese people use "Otsukaresama desu" more like a greeting.
例たとえば仕事しごとで同僚どうりょうに会あった時ときにお疲つかれ様さまですって言いったり
For example, at work when meeting a coworker you say Otsukaresama desu,
仕事しごとが終おわって家いえに帰かえる時ときに同僚どうりょうとか上司じょうしの人ひとにお疲つかれ様さまでしたって言いって帰かえるんですね。
and when work is over and going home, you say Otsukaresama deshita to coworkers or bosses and leave.
同おなじ状況じょうきょうの時ときに例たとえば英語えいご、アメリカの会社かいしゃで働はたらいているとして
In the same situation, for example, assuming you're working at a company in America in English,
仕事しごとが終おわった時ときに「Good job」って言いって家いえに帰かえりますか。
Do you say "Good job" and go home when you finish work?
仕事しごとに朝来ちょうらいて同僚どうりょうに「Good job」とか「Good work」って言いいますかっていう話はなしなんですよね。
What I'm talking about is whether you come to work in the morning and say "Good job" or "Good work" to your colleagues.
おそらくほとんどの人ひとは言いわないと思おもいます。
Probably most people don't say that.
これがだからさっきの例れいに似にてますよね。
This is similar to the earlier example.
日本人にほんじんは「お疲つかれ様さまです」を言いいたいから直訳ちょくやくしてしまうんですね。
Japanese people want to say "otsukaresama desu," so they translate it literally.
でもこの「お疲つかれ様さまです」を直訳ちょくやくして英語えいごで話はなしてもあまり意味いみがわかりませんよね。
But even if you translate this "otsukaresama desu" literally and say it in English, it doesn't really make much sense.
まあ意味いみは少すこしわかるかもしれませんけど自然しぜんではないですよね。
Well, the meaning might be somewhat understandable, but it's not natural.
なので言語げんごを学まなぶ時ときに直訳ちょくやくするだけじゃなくてその文化ぶんかも学まなばなきゃいけないということなんですね。
So when learning a language, you have to learn not just by translating literally, but also learn the culture.
なので言葉ことばを直訳ちょくやくして意味いみがわかった
So you translated the words and understood the meaning,
だからといって同おなじ場面ばめん、同おなじ状況じょうきょうで使つかえるとは限かぎらないし、
but that doesn't mean you can use it in the same scene or the same situation,
そもそも同おなじ表現ひょうげんがその言語げんごに存在そんざいしない可能性かのうせいもありますよね。
In the first place, there's a possibility that the same expression doesn't even exist in that language.
やっぱりこれは文化的ぶんかてきな違ちがいがあるからだと思おもいます。
I think this is because of cultural differences.
やっぱり違ちがう文化ぶんかには違ちがうコミュニケーションの取とり方かたがありますよね。
Different cultures have different ways of communicating, right?
コミュニケーションのスタイルがありますよね。
There are different communication styles, right?
だから日本式にほんしきのコミュニケーションのスタイルを
So if you take the Japanese style of communication
外国がいこくでやっても
and do it abroad,
あまり自然しぜんじゃないし、逆ぎゃくに皆みなさんの国くにでは一般的いっぱんてきなコミュニケーションのスタイルを日本にほんに持もってきてやっても
it's not very natural, and conversely, if you bring a communication style that's common in your country to Japan and do it,
これは自然しぜんではないという意味いみです。
that means it won't be natural either.
で自然しぜんではないだけだったらいいんですけど、時々ときどき意味いみが分わからない場合ばあいもありますから、これはコミュニケーションを取とる上うえで
If it were just unnatural, that would be fine, but sometimes it can't even be understood, so when it comes to communicating,
支障ししょうをきたしますよね。
it gets in the way, right?
コミュニケーションが取とれなくなってしまうので、これはやっぱり気きをつけておきたいポイントですよね。
You become unable to communicate, so this is a point you really want to be careful about.
翻訳ほんやくして意味いみを理解りかいすることも時ときには大事だいじだと思おもいますけど。
I think translating to understand the meaning is sometimes important.
毎回まいかいそれをやっていると必かならずどこかで問題もんだいが起おこるということですね
But if you do that every time, problems will definitely occur somewhere.
なのでまあ意味いみを知しりたいから訳やくすってのは悪わるいことではないと思おもうんですけど
So, translating because you want to know the meaning isn't a bad thing,
その言語げんごを完全かんぜんに理解りかいするという意味いみではあまり効果的こうかてきではないのかもしれません
but in terms of fully understanding the language, it may not be very effective.
やっぱりその意味いみを知しりたいんだったらどこで使つかわれるかどんな状況じょうきょうで使つかわれるか
If you want to know the meaning, you need to know where it's used, in what situations it's used,
どんな文化的ぶんかてき背景はいけいがあるのかどうして日本にほんではそういう言いい方かたをするのかとかそういう
what cultural background it has, why people say it that way in Japan, and so on —
文化ぶんかについて理解りかいしていないと上手じょうずに使つかえないフレーズがあるということですよね
what I'm saying is that there are phrases you can't use well without understanding the culture.
で今いま具体例ぐたいれいを出だしながら少すこし説明せつめいしたんですけど
I've just explained this with specific examples,
なんでこんなに直訳ちょくやくできない言葉ことばが多おおいのかと言いったら
and if you ask why there are so many words that can't be translated literally,
やっぱり言葉ことばと文化ぶんかっていうのはセットなんですね
it's because language and culture come as a set.
言語げんごにはその言葉ことばの意味いみだけじゃなくて人間関係にんげんかんけいとか
Language consists not only of the meaning of words, but also human relationships,
人ひとと人ひととの距離感きょりかんとか礼儀れいぎ、マナーとかコミュニケーション
the sense of distance between people, courtesy, manners, communication,
のスタイルとか
styles, and so on.
いろんなものが重かさなって成なり立たってるんですよね。
It's made up of many overlapping things.
なので言葉ことばを見みた時ときにその意味いみだけ抜ぬき取とることはできないんですよ
So when you look at words, you can't extract just the meaning.
残念ざんねんながら
Unfortunately.
やっぱりコミュニケーションを取とる上うえではいろんな文化ぶんか、違ちがう文化ぶんかの違ちがいを理解りかいしながら話はなさないとコミュニケーション
When communicating, you have to speak while understanding various cultures and differences between cultures, otherwise communication
として成なり立たたないということなんですね
doesn't hold together as communication.
で特とくに日本にほんはかなり独特どくとくな文化ぶんかがあると思おもいます
And Japan in particular has a quite unique culture, I think.
例たとえばヨーロッパで言いうと。
For example, in Europe.
ヨーロッパの
In Europe,
自分じぶんの国くにの隣となりの国くには似にている文化ぶんかがあったりとか
the neighboring country to your own may have a similar culture,
例たとえば南みなみアメリカとか南みなみアメリカの中なかでそれぞれの国くにでもちろん文化ぶんかは違ちがうんですけど共通きょうつうの認識にんしきもやっぱり多おおいと思おもいます
for example, in South America, of course each country has a different culture, but I think there is also a lot of shared understanding.
日本にほんと比くらべると
Compared to Japan,
なのでもちろん似にている国くに、似にている言語げんごを話はなす時ときにはあまり意識いしきしなくてもなんとなくわかるかもしれませんけど。
so of course when speaking similar countries or similar languages, you might somehow understand without being very conscious of it.
特とくに日本にほんと全然ぜんぜん違ちがう文化ぶんかがある国くにの人ひともいますよね
But there are also people from countries with cultures completely different from Japan.
なのでそういう人ひとは言語げんごを学まなぶとき文化ぶんかも必かならずセットにして学まなぶ必要ひつようがあるんですね
So such people need to always learn culture as a set when learning a language.
でやっぱり言語げんごを学まなぶっていうのは文化ぶんかを一緒いっしょに学まなぶという意味いみだと思おもいます
Learning a language means learning the culture together, I think.
まあ皆みなさん知しっているかわかりませんけど自じ文化ぶんか中心ちゅうしん主義しゅぎという言葉ことばがあります。
I don't know if you all know it, but there is a term called ethnocentrism.
これどういう意味いみかというと自分じぶんの文化ぶんかを中心ちゅうしんにして物事ものごとを考かんがえるという意味いみです
What this means is thinking about things centered on your own culture
まああまり意識いしきしなかったら皆みなさん多分たぶん大体だいたいのことを自分じぶんの文化ぶんか中心ちゅうしんで見みていると思おもうんですけど
Well, if you don't really think about it, I think most people probably see most things centered on their own culture
それが正ただしいと思おもい込こんでしまうと言語げんご学習がくしゅうにおいてかなり問題もんだいがあると思おもいます
If you assume that is correct, I think it causes quite a problem in language learning
さっきも言いったように英語えいごでは「How are you?
As I said earlier, in English they say "How are you?
」って言いうから日本語にっぽんご
" so in Japanese
でも私わたしは言いいたい
I want to say it too
みんなもそうするべきだっていう自分じぶんの文化ぶんかに
Everyone should do so too, forcing it onto
相手あいての文化ぶんかも合あわせるべきだみたいな姿勢しせいで言語げんご学習がくしゅうをすると
your own culture, with an attitude like the other culture should conform too, if you learn a language like that
やっぱりこれは言語げんご学習がくしゅうにおいては必かならず弊害へいがいがあると思おもいます
After all, I think this will definitely be a hindrance in language learning
必かならず壁かべにぶち当あたると思おもいます
I think you'll definitely hit a wall
なので言語げんごを学まなぶときは柔軟じゅうなんな姿勢しせいで
So when learning a language, with a flexible attitude
いろんな文化ぶんかを知しろうとする姿勢しせいが大事だいじだと思おもいます
I think it's important to have an attitude of trying to learn about various cultures
なのでこう文化ぶんかを比くらべた時ときに自分じぶんの文化ぶんかの方ほうが正ただしいって思おもうんじゃなくて
So when comparing cultures like this, instead of thinking your own culture is more correct
違ちがう文化ぶんかがあるということを認みとめることが大事だいじなんですね
It's important to acknowledge that a different culture exists
でどちらが正ただしいというわけではなくて違ちがう文化ぶんかが存在そんざいして文化ぶんかに合あわせて言葉ことばを選えらばないと。
It's not about which one is correct, but that different cultures exist and you have to choose words to fit the culture.
自然しぜんなコミュニケーションが取とれないことになってしまうんです
It means you won't be able to have natural communication
まあちょっと今日きょう話はなしたことを軽かるくまとめたいんですけど
Well, I'd like to briefly summarize what I talked about today
外国語がいこくごを勉強べんきょうするときはその単語たんごとか文法ぶんぽうを
When studying a foreign language, not just those words and grammar
学まなぶだけではなくてその表現ひょうげんがどうやって使つかわれているのかに注目ちゅうもくしなきゃいけないんですね
You have to pay attention to how those expressions are actually used
どんな文化的ぶんかてき背景はいけいがあるのかどんな状況じょうきょうで使つかうのか。
What kind of cultural background there is, in what situations they're used.
この部分ぶぶんに注目ちゅうもくして言語げんごを学まなぶ必要ひつようがあると思おもいます
I think you need to learn language by focusing on this part
特とくに高たかいレベルで言語げんごを話はなしたい人ひとは気きをつけなきゃいけないポイントですね
This is a point especially people who want to speak a language at a high level have to be careful about
なのでいろんな文法ぶんぽうとかいろんな表現ひょうげんを皆みなさん学まなぶと思おもいますけど学まなぶ時ときには
So I think you'll all learn various grammar and various expressions, but when you learn them
意味いみだけ学まなぶんじゃなくてどうしてそういう言いい方かたをするのかとか。
Don't just learn the meaning, but why they say it that way, and so on.
どういう場面ばめんで使つかえる表現ひょうげんなのか、こういうこともセットにして学まなばなきゃいけないんですね
In what kind of situations you can use the expression, you have to learn these things together as a set
まあ直訳ちょくやくできない表現ひょうげんっていうのはたくさんあるんですけど
Well, there are many expressions that can't be translated literally, but
そういう表現ひょうげんを知しることは言語げんご
Knowing such expressions leads to understanding not just the language
だけじゃなくて文化ぶんかを理解りかいすることにもつながるので皆みなさんも言語げんご学習がくしゅうの時ときにはぜひそこを気きをつけながら勉強べんきょうしてください
but also the culture, so when you're learning a language please study while paying attention to that
日本語にっぽんごだけに限かぎらず。
Not limited to just Japanese.
いろんな言語げんごを勉強べんきょうする時ときに役立やくだつ考かんがえ方かただと思おもいます
I think it's a way of thinking that's useful when studying various languages
