Yes, hello everyone, NagiNays today
thank you for coming to NagiNays Secret Base, NagiNays' secret base again
I share my experiences so far and what I have learned from them with you all.
Let's enjoy learning Japanese together.
Yes, so, how is everyone doing?
Today is Sunday, so I am off from work, but
today's topic is that I would like to share with you about training gyms in Japan.
はい
Yes.
As you might know, I work part-time at a training gym in Japan.
Yes, so for those of you who might come to Japan for travel or want to live in Japan in the future, I think you might be curious about what Japanese training gyms are like,
so
I hope I can share that with you today.
はい
Yes.
Wait a second, this is itchy, sorry.
Yes, so I've thought about it, so yes, I will talk while looking down a bit, yes.
Have you ever been to a training gym in Japan?
Have you?
はい
Yes.
there are various things I think about,
but first of all,
after all,
there are many clean places, yes.
ま
Well,
depending on the training gym,
the rules might be different, but generally, after using the machines,
it is basic to wipe them with a towel and disinfect them.
うん
Yeah.
And like,
what should I say,
keeping it clean,
they really value keeping it clean so that other people can use it easily.
はい
Yes.
And well, when I am actually training, I think that customers,
how should I say, everyone shares the equipment while training.
you might want to do bench presses for an hour, everyone has that,
but if you do that, other customers won't be able to use it, so everyone shares,
and I think that training while sharing is also a characteristic of Japanese gyms. Yeah.
generally,
many gyms have a monthly membership, or
yes, a system where you pay a monthly fee and can go as many times as you want.
That is common.
On the other hand, there are also gyms where you can pay each time,
like 'I went today so I pay, I went today so I pay'.
This is very convenient, right? Yes, yes.
And, well,
my training gym is selectable.
で
And
there is no one-month membership, so at my gym,
you either buy
a single-use ticket, or a coupon book, which is like buying ten tickets and getting one free, so it's a bit of a deal.
Yes, those kinds of systems, and well, the payment methods for fees vary depending on the gym, I think.
うん
Yeah.
Well, also,
I wonder,
I think that Japanese gyms have rules that are a bit too strict.
I really think so. Yeah.
で
And,
I'm going to introduce the rules of the gym where I actually work now,
and it might be so strict that you all might be surprised. Yes.
For example,
while sitting on the training machines,
using your smartphone for a long time is prohibited. Yes.
And as for filming, inside the training room,
filming is also prohibited.
For example, some people might want to record a video of themselves training as a record or to upload to SNS,
but
since filming is prohibited in the first place, even I myself,
thought about uploading
a video related to training, but since filming is prohibited at my gym,
I thought, 'Oh, that won't work,' so it's strict, isn't it? Yes.
で
And,
also, for customers who come for the first time, we explain the rules and manners thoroughly,
and if they can't follow them, they can't use the facility, so it's very strict, right?
Yeah, for example, people wearing jeans or denim,
or people not wearing jerseys or clothes that are easy to move in, cannot use the gym. Yeah.
Well, also, you must wear shoes.
And when you are training
in the training room,
you might come with friends or happen to meet acquaintances,
but at that time, loud conversations
for a long time
between customers are prohibited. Yes, well,
saying 'long time no see' or
'Oh, you're working out,' that much is
fine, but if you are talking the whole time in the training room,
to the point where it disturbs everyone's concentration,
that kind of conversation is prohibited. Yes.
まあ
Well,
there are still many other strict rules, and also, at my gym,
the usage time is fixed at 2 hours. 2 hours.
If you exceed this 2 hours by even 1 or 2 minutes, an additional fee is charged. Yes, it's quite strict, isn't it?
うん
Yeah.
And actually, before,
there was a time when customers
got a bit too excited and were talking loudly for about 10 minutes, and just when I was at the gym
during the time I was watching over everyone's safety, at that time
So, something like that happened, and I was called over by another customer who asked me to come.
And at that time, they said those people were being loud and to warn them, and something like...
They scolded me a bit, saying things like, "This isn't good enough, is it?"
Certainly, I was...
wondering if I should warn them,
or what I should do, so I was just at a loss. Yes.
But, you know, to a customer...
it's hard to say, isn't it? Like, "Excuse me, could you please be a little...
quieter?" It's hard to say things like that, right? So, I thought and thought about it.
Well, I consulted with my supervisor, and we all discussed it as a staff.
We decided to make an announcement.
That broadcast. Yes, by broadcasting, well, everyone...
won't think it's being said just to them, but rather that we are telling everyone...
the rules.
It's a way to...
convey it to the customers gently, that's the conclusion we came to.
And since then, every day, every hour, or was it every two hours? Yes, every two hours,
we set a timer, and when it goes beep-beep-beep,
we started making the announcement. Yes.
And actually, I'm a bit nervous, but I'd like to show you what kind of announcement I make.
I'll try to...
read the actual announcement script now.
Please listen. Yes. I can usually say it smoothly, but I'm a bit nervous, so I don't know if I can say it well. Yes.
What should I do? While looking at it...
Okay, here I go. Yes.
Well then,
yes, here I go.
Thank you very much for visiting us today. For customers using the training room,
we would like to provide guidance regarding rules and manners.
Please be considerate of other customers when conversing with each other.
Also, please refrain from taking long breaks or using smartphones while sitting on the machines.
We appreciate everyone's cooperation.
Something like that. Yes. It's like this. At first, of course...
well...
all the staff were embarrassed to make the announcement,
and we were saying, "Who's going to do it? Who's going to do it? What should we do?" But now, everyone...
automatically makes the announcement when the timer goes off. Yes.
We've gradually gotten used to it. Yes.
And well, changing the subject again,
there is actually a customer who I think is the most amazing person working at this gym. Yes.
My gym has people of all ages,
from young people to the elderly, using it, but among them, there is an 88-year-old...
energetic grandmother who comes.
はい
Yes.
で
And,
this grandmother is very young, she doesn't look 88 at all,
and she drives a very large car by herself to the training gym.
She comes to visit us. Yeah.
And well, every day,
she comes to visit us.
Well, she dyes her hair a beautiful brown, and her nails are also very pretty.
Her clothes and training wear are also very stylish.
I really admire that, and I want to age
the same way she does. Yes, exactly.
And that grandmother often compliments me.
The thing is, I like drawing, and although I'm not particularly good at it,
I take the various events and information for the training gym
and draw them on a blackboard
to display them.
で
And
since I actually have one here, I'll show it. Like this, I think of the designs
and make these POP signs. And I
post them inside the gym or at the entrance, and when that grandmother sees them, she says,
“Your drawing is great again this month,” or something like that,
or “It makes me want to buy the product,” and she compliments me, which makes me really happy.
There are many very warm customers. They are regular customers at my training gym. Yeah.
そう
Yes.
まあ
Well,
this kind of small interaction with customers
and being able to talk to them is one of the rewarding parts of working at the gym, I think. Yeah.
Well, like this, Japanese training gyms have strict rules, but there is also interaction with customers,
and being able to see customers getting healthier and more energetic,
I am an instructor at this training gym, or rather,
I just teach how to use the machines; I don't have a trainer's license, but
I think this job is really fun for me. Yeah.
can be strict, and depending on the training gym,
the rules are different. Of course, there are gyms that are open 24 hours,
and there are gyms that are open until 9 or 10 at night,
follows the rules and keeps things clean,
and I think there are many gyms that ensure everyone can exercise comfortably. Yes.
It feels very Japanese, doesn't it? Thinking about others while
using the gym.
I wonder if that is
the general rule in Japan.
Yes. What is it like when you go to the gym in your country? Is it kept clean?
あと
Also,
I would be happy if you could tell me about the gym culture in your country,
such as conversations between customers or if the rules are strict.
If there are differences from Japanese gyms, please let me know in the comments.
Yes, so thank you for watching again today.
When you come to Japan, please try going to a training gym.
Yes, if you have any questions or if there is anything you don't understand, please write it in the comments.
Well, thank you again today.
Let's meet again next time. Bye-bye.
