This podcast is a podcast where you can study natural Japanese as if you were talking with a friend.
In this episode,
I
would like to talk to you all
about my past worries.
Do you all have worries too?
When I was a teenager, well, I had quite a lot of worries,
especially about my appearance,
and my relationships with people,
and then after I turned twenty, well, work-
related worries were very common.
で
And,
now,
honestly, I don't really have things I worry about every day,
but when I was a teenager,
well, I was really worrying about something every day.
How about you all?
In this episode,
first, I will introduce you to my worries about my appearance.
Speaking of appearance, first of all,
I have always been self-conscious about
the mole between my eyes.
And honestly, I'm still a bit self-conscious about it now.
Well, I have a mole between my eyes, and it's right
in the middle,
you know.
And,
で
really,
since I was like five or
four years old, I've always had this
mole here, a black dot.
で
And,
honestly,
I've never been teased by friends
about this mole. To tease
means
to say things that make the other person uncomfortable and enjoy their reaction.
To tease a friend.
そう
Right.
I haven't really been teased about the mole,
but every time I look in the mirror, I think it's in such a strange place,
and I've always hated it.
And honestly, even recently,
I've seriously thought about
getting this mole removed.
Nowadays, it's quite cheap,
you know, to get a mole removed at a clinic.
you know, to get a mole removed at a clinic.
Well, it's not like I'm worried enough to go to the hospital to have it removed,
so I think I'm fine as I am for now.
It's just like this.
うん
Yeah.
Well, I don't think people around me really care, but you know,
there are times when you worry about it yourself, right?
Also, another thing I struggled with just like the mole was acne.
Acne is,
well, like on my face or
on my back,
these red
できもの
bumps that form.
Sometimes there's white stuff inside, and it hurts, doesn't it?
And when I was in my teens,
I had a lot of acne on my face. Especially
from age fifteen to
twenty-
three or twenty-four,
I had acne on my face the whole time.
And well, I think there are quite a lot of people
who struggle with acne.
When you have acne, it hurts and it's embarrassing,
and it's just unpleasant, isn't it?
I really hated my acne too,
and I tried various medicines,
but in the end,
it didn't heal.
Honestly, it's only been in the last two or three years
that I haven't really gotten acne on my face.
Maybe two years or so.
When I first started YouTube, about four or five years ago, I still
felt like I always had acne on my face,
so when I filmed videos,
I used
very strong lights.
You know, when you shine a light on your face,
it makes the acne harder to see.
Exactly.
And I think the reason my acne cleared up is, well,
maybe age, age,
あと
also,
my stress decreased a bit, and
I also
took medicine. I bought some oral medication myself,
and maybe that medicine worked.
And also, in my case,
it seems like taking hay fever medicine helps a bit with acne.
Yeah, well, it healed naturally like that,
but
I really struggled a lot with acne.
Yes, so I really understand how people who suffer from breakouts or acne feel.
And another thing,
weight.
I was also worried about my weight for a long time.
After all,
in Japan,
there are still so many people
who think it's better to be thin.
So I used to think that if I wasn't thin like a model,
I wasn't good enough.
Especially
when I was around 10 or 15 years old,
I really thought that way.
で
And
I,
well, when I was 10, I was a bit chubby,
and I weighed more than those around me.
I wasn't
extremely overweight or anything,
and I could exercise, so I was very healthy, but
because my friends teased me
about my weight,
well, that was the reason
I went on a diet,
and, well, I lost a huge amount of weight.
It was like I had a mental illness,
I went on a diet,
and in half a year,
my weight went from 50 kilograms
キロ
to
まで
kilograms,
it dropped,
and I really
became like skin and bones,
but I had that happen.
で
And
in my case, somehow,
I was able to recover quickly,
and a year later, my weight
increased again to about 43 kilograms,
so
I was really lucky, but
after that,
I felt
that the fact that I had dieted
and lost weight back then
was very embarrassing,
and I didn't want to talk about it
to my friends around me,
and I didn't want to talk to my family about it at all.
もう
Already
something like that much
I felt I had done something embarrassing
so honestly, that
diet story, even now
I don't want to talk about it with my family.
Well, about that time
people who know the me who lost weight
I don't want to talk about that with them.
I can talk to you all. Because you all didn't see me back then.
So I can talk about it,
but I am truly embarrassed about myself back then.
Anyway, it's embarrassing. Yeah.
Yes. Well, I was quite worried about that too.
Weight
and that diet.
And well, honestly, now I don't worry about my weight that much anymore, so I think it's good.
After all,
once you turn 28,
a little more
you can see the world in different ways, and you realize that people aren't just about their appearance.
I understand that. Whether you're thin or not, well,
it doesn't
matter at all.
Yeah. Well, as long as that person is healthy and energetic,
いい
it's fine.
Also, because they are healthy and
energetic,
there is beauty.
So, things like
that person's individuality
and beauty,
I've really started to want to value those things more recently.
I've really started to think that lately.
However, even so, sometimes I still
think that maybe I should lose weight.
And like,
since I've always thought of myself as a bit chubby,
my
butt shape
that would show,
clothing
I don't want to wear.
So when I wear pants, I wear something a bit loose,
something relaxing,
I wear loose pants.
But if, for some reason,
something not so loose,
if I wear pants that cling to my body, I choose a shirt that covers my butt,
or something like that.
あと
Also
sometimes shirts or jackets
I would tie them around my waist to cover my butt
I still do that a little bit even now
Especially
なんか
like
when I go out with female friends, I still worry about my body shape quite a bit
sometimes
Yes, but compared to the past, I don't worry about it as much now, and I don't constantly think about my body shape
all the time
so I'm glad about that too
はい
Yes
Well, regarding my appearance
acne and weight were my main concerns
And next
I will talk about my relationship struggles
In relationships too
I was quite worried
Especially when I was a teenager
the fact that I had few friends
made me feel anxious
Like, when I looked at my friends around me, everyone
had really close friends in class
or went out to hang out with friends after school
or sent messages
してて
and
for me
I didn't really have any close friends like that
I didn't really mind not having friends itself
but around me
for example, because I had few friends
なんか
like
I think I was worried about being thought of as different from them
I think
Have you all ever felt that way too?
あと
Also
during my university or high school days
で
and
it was painful to see my friends' posts
Do you all still see your friends'
posts on social media?
How do you feel at those times?
For example, when friends post photos of their trips on social media
and
ああ
oh
I could honestly be happy for them, thinking 'that's great you could go'
I could
you know, for me
が
that
was just really difficult
That's why just seeing those kinds of posts from friends is exhausting, and
なんか
somehow
and I'm not really the type
who wants to post
on social media either,
so it's strange that I'm doing it. I do YouTube,
but I'm really bad at
personal
posting on social media. I end up wondering what the point
of posting is.
I really don't understand the meaning, I truly wonder what the reason is.
And this, you know, was solved
by quitting social media.
I deleted all my accounts, and
the feeling of
anxiety
about having few friends has also decreased since I hit my 20s.
こう
Like,
during my student days,
there were always classmates
or friends around me,
and I often
compared myself to them,
but once those people aren't around anymore,
you stop comparing,
so the anxiety has decreased.
I think that's a good thing.
で
And,
also, another thing I worried about regarding relationships was
not being able to
keep up with the topics
everyone around me was talking about. I worried about this too.
My friends around me would always watch TV
and talk about famous celebrities,
talk about dramas, TV shows,
and talk a lot about popular idols, but
I didn't have a TV at home.
だから
So,
the content everyone was talking about
I didn't understand at all, and
で
well,
my
parents
really had no interest in TV.
My mother was in the hospital, and
my father only read books and newspapers.
They were the type who had no interest in trends at all.
で
And,
when I was at home, the music my parents would play was
Enka or something like that.
Like classical music or
なんか
something
not at all
music that has nothing to do with trends
で
and
we didn't have a car either
and we didn't have money
その
so
like to shopping malls
I was never taken
and I was almost never taken to amusement parks either
そういう
so
I didn't really understand talk about those kinds of places
and I didn't really understand talk about food either. Like
my
の
well
mother was sick, so
my father
often cooked for us, but
my father wasn't good at cooking either
so he always made curry rice
okonomiyaki
and vegetable soup
just these three things
so like other
dishes
を
I
had never eaten at all
so I couldn't keep up with my friends' talk about food at all
it was like that
in the past, I was really worried about not being able to keep up with the conversation
but now I don't
think so at all
after all, now that I'm
well, I'm 28
the topics
I talk about with friends
aren't famous celebrities or anything like that, but like
our lives, our work, and
our values, well, we talk about those things
ね
you know
we've started to
no, really, becoming an adult
made it easier. There's no need to keep up with topics
yeah, just having
こう
like
friends
を
I can
talk about my
values with is just
I've really come to think that it's good now
うん
Yeah
はい
Yes
Well then
Lastly, about work
I'll also talk about what I was worried about
まあ
Well
work
ね
you know
Do you all like your jobs?
I wonder
I
honestly, this podcast
is something I'm doing as a job now, but
なんか
somehow
これを
this
my career
as
it's hard to
think of it that way
Of course I like it
and I'll continue doing it forever
でも
but
for this podcast
I'm not working full-time
a hobby
it's not, it's a job, but
it might feel closer to a hobby
Yeah, so
when I see friends around me
working really hard full-time, I sometimes
feel like I'm still a child
で
And
I want a career of my own
professional
I want to do a job, for about 8 years now
I've been thinking that
but I have the worry of not knowing what to do
で
And
even now, well
honestly, I don't know what to do
I think
terribly
I'm not worried
Well, from now on
honestly, I don't know what kind of work I'll do yet, but I'll probably do something
I don't have to decide that in a hurry now
I think
But for about 8 years
ago, when I was in university
When I was thinking about finding a job,
I was really struggling.
I felt like I had to do a job that suited me,
I really thought that,
but I had no idea what kind of job that was,
なんか
and like,
anyway, like,
I didn't know what to do.
Honestly, I still feel that way now.
Actually, I studied architecture in university.
で
And,
I went to university for four years,
and then for two years after that,
I went to vocational school, so I studied for six years,
but I didn't really feel like
I wanted to work in architecture in Japan,
and honestly,
I didn't really understand
what kind of industry
the architecture industry was or what kind of jobs were in it,
so
I didn't
work in architecture.
だけど
However,
well, I did work at a hotel
that was somewhat close to architecture.
At that hotel,
into hotels where guests could stay,
so it was related to what I studied,
but, well, my job duties
were mainly
interacting with guests, so it wasn't really related,
で
and
I moved to Australia for the first time,
だから
so
when I look at
my career, it looks very scattered.
And I feel embarrassed by that, or rather,
how should I
decide on my specialty or
my job? I still worry about that even now.
And maybe, well, if I overthink it,
it's probably not good.
Recently,
there's a phrase I was taught,
こう
like,
what is needed to decide something is, well, to make a decision.
And to continue with that.
So, maybe
ね
You know,
even people who have built amazing careers,
I wonder, at some point,
they decided, 'Okay, I'm going to do this,' and kept at it from there,
which is probably why they have the careers they do now.
So, for me, in my life so far,
I've never really
decided to do something and stuck with it, other than YouTube.
So I hope I can decide on something and do it
in the future.
But, you know, even if I try to rush into it, I probably can't,
so I'm not in a hurry,
and when the time comes, I'll decide
and do it, is how I've been
thinking lately.
はい
Yes.
Well, it's like, in our
generation, not knowing what you want to do
or not knowing what you should do,
I think there are probably
a lot of people who feel that way.
I guess it's just that kind of era.
My
husband's
mother
は
left home
at the age of
and started living
on her own,
and she has really, truly
worked incredibly hard to survive.
She worked like
16 hours a day,
held three jobs
at once,
so, you know,
she said she did any kind of work.
She would ride her bike
for an hour from home
to a bakery
and work there too.
She had to work, didn't she?
Jack's mother's mother was an alcoholic,
and she was always drinking, and there was no food in the house, so
she couldn't rely on her parents,
so to live on her own and pay rent,
she really had to do anything.
Compared to that situation, I...
まあね
Well, you know,
well, honestly.
You don't have to work super hard
to survive,
and Jack, his dad, and his mom support my life,
こう
so
maybe
なんか
like,
I'm not working yet because I don't really need to work super hard,
I kind of thought that maybe I haven't decided on my career yet.
そう
Yeah.
Well, I feel like there are many young people like that these days.
I'm the same way,
after all,
because society is affluent,
こう
so
even if I don't work super hard to earn money,
a certain level of
a good life is taken for granted,
I think that's how all young people feel.
だから
So,
あの
um,
when I hear stories from
people of the older generation who worked super hard just to survive,
I really think they are amazing.
うん
Yeah.
So, like that,
yes, today I shared my worries with you all.
Well, I'm sure you all have worries too, but
まあね
well,
no human can be perfect,
だから
so
as long as we can't be perfect, we will always have worries,
so it's hard to accept that, but
you know, if we could be kind to ourselves,
that would be nice, right?
はい
Yes.
