Hello, my friends.
皆さん、こんにちは。
Welcome back to English unleashed.
「イングリッシュ・アンリーシュド」へようこそ。
This is your five minutes of daily English listening practice.
毎日5分間の英語リスニング練習の時間です。
So stay with me until the end.
最後までお付き合いください。
Listen carefully and let your English brain wake up.
注意深く聞いて、英語脳を目覚めさせましょう。
Today, I want to talk about something that can completely change the way you learn vocabulary.
今日は、語彙の学習方法を根本から変えるような話をしたいと思います。
A lot of English learners spend a huge amount of time looking at words.
多くの英語学習者が、単語を見ることに膨大な時間を費やしています。
They read vocabulary lists.
単語リストを読んだり、
They look at flashcards.
フラッシュカードを見たり、
They read meanings.
意味を確認したり、
They highlight words in books.
本の中で単語にハイライトを引いたりしています。
They save new words in books, and all of that can be useful.
新しい単語を本に書き留めたりもしますが、それらも役に立つことはあります。
But there is one big problem.
しかし、大きな問題が一つあります。
Seeing a word is not the same as knowing how to use it.
単語を見ることは、その使い方を知ることとは別物だということです。
You may look at a word many times and think, "Yes, I know this word." But later, when you are speaking English, you cannot remember it.
何度も単語を見て「ああ、この単語は知っている」と思っても、いざ英語を話すときには思い出せないものです。
If you really want a new word to become part of your English, you need to use it.
新しい単語を自分の英語の一部にしたいなら、実際に使わなければなりません。
You need to move it around.
その単語を動かしてみる必要があります。
You need to connect it to different ideas.
さまざまなアイデアと結びつける必要があります。
You need to say it.
声に出す必要があります。
You need to remember it without looking.
見ないで思い出せるようにする必要があります。
In other words, do not just see words.
つまり、単語をただ見るだけではいけません。
Do something with them.
その単語を使って何かをするのです。
So today, I want to give you five very simple techniques that can help you turn new vocabulary into words you can actually use.
そこで今日は、新しい語彙を実際に使える言葉に変えるための、非常にシンプルな5つのテクニックを紹介します。
Technique number one: Make your own sentence.
テクニックその1：自分で文章を作る。
Imagine you have just learned the word nervous.
例えば「nervous（緊張している）」という単語を覚えたとします。
You can read the meaning.
意味を読むこともできますし、
You can listen to the pronunciation, but do not stop there.
発音を聞くこともできますが、そこで止まってはいけません。
Make a sentence that is connected to your own life.
自分の生活に関連した文章を作ってみるのです。
For example, I feel nervous before an important meeting.
例えば、「私は重要な会議の前に緊張する」といった具合です。
Now the word is connected to something real.
これで、その単語が現実の何かと結びつきました。
Technique number two: Change your sentence.
テクニックその2：文章を変えてみる。
Take the sentence you just made and change one part of it.
先ほど作った文章の一部を変えてみます。
For example, I feel nervous before an important meeting.
例えば、「私は重要な会議の前に緊張する」。
Now change it.
これを変えてみましょう。
I feel nervous before any exam.
「私は試験の前に緊張する」。
This helps you understand how the word behaves.
こうすることで、その単語がどのように使われるのかが理解できるようになります。
And slowly, the word becomes easier to use naturally.
そうすれば徐々に、その単語を自然に使いやすくなっていきます。
Technique number three: Ask yourself a question with the new word.
テクニックその3：新しい単語を使って自分に質問する。
If your word is nervous, ask yourself what makes me nervous.
もし単語が「nervous」なら、「何が私を緊張させるのか？」と自分に問いかけてみてください。
Then answer the question.
そして、その質問に答えるのです。
Maybe you say, "Speaking in front of a large group makes me nervous." Now you're not simply repeating the word; you are using it to express an idea.
例えば「大勢の前で話すのは緊張する」と言うとします。これで単に単語を繰り返すのではなく、考えを表現するために使っています。
Technique number four: Try to remember the word without looking.
テクニックその4：見ないで単語を思い出そうとする。
This is one of the most important things you can do.
これは最も重要なことの一つです。
Close your notebook.
ノートを閉じて。
Close the app.
アプリを閉じて。
Turn the flashcard over.
フラッシュカードを裏返して。
Now ask yourself, "What was the word?
そして自分に問いかけてみて。「あの単語は何だったっけ？」
" And what does it mean?
「そしてどういう意味だっけ？」
Can I make a sentence with it?
「それを使って文章を作れるかな？」
Give yourself a few seconds.
数秒間、自分に時間を与えて。
Let your brain search.
脳に探させてみて。
That search is very useful.
その探す作業がとても役に立つのです。
And technique number five: Come back to the word later.
そしてテクニックその5：後でその単語に戻ってくる。
Do not learn a word once and then leave it forever.
一度単語を学んで、そのまま放置してはいけません。
Use it again tomorrow.
明日また使ってみて。
Then use it again a few days later.
そして数日後にもう一度使ってみて。
You can make a new sentence.
新しい文章を作ってもいい。
You can ask a new question.
新しい質問をしてもいい。
Try to remember the meaning.
意味を思い出そうとしてみて。
So here's the main idea I want you to remember from today's very short episode: Do not collect words.
今日の短いエピソードで覚えておいてほしいメインの考えはこれです：単語を集めるな。
Work with words.
単語を使いこなせ。
Do not simply look at a word and think I know it.
単語を見て「知っている」と思うだけで終わらせないで。
Do something with it.
それを使って何かをしてみて。
Make a sentence.
文章を作ってみて。
Change the sentence.
その文章を変えてみて。
Ask a question.
質問をしてみて。
Try to remember the word without looking.
見ないで単語を思い出そうとしてみて。
Then come back to it later.
そして後でまた戻ってきて。
All right.
よし。
Thanks for spending these five minutes with me today.
今日、私とこの5分間を過ごしてくれてありがとう。
Keep listening.
聞き続けて。
Keep practicing.
練習し続けて。
And most importantly, keep using the English that you learn.
そして何より、学んだ英語を使い続けてください。
Bye for now.
それではまた。
