In today's mini English lesson, I'm going to teach you about articles.
今日のミニ英語レッスンでは、冠詞について教えます。
I'm going to tell you about an old theory that we now know is wrong, and at the same time, teach you eight rules about how to use articles in English.
今では間違いだと分かっている古い説についてお話ししながら、同時に英語の冠詞の使い方に関する8つのルールを教えます。

Many years ago, people believed that the Earth was the center of the universe.

But then a boy observed the sun, and he came up with an unusual theory that the Earth actually orbits the sun.
しかしその後、ある少年が太陽を観察し、地球が実際に太陽の周りを回っているという珍しい説を思いつきました。
The boy's name was Copernicus.

Ever heard of him?

This theory was such a radical idea at the time that people thought that he was crazy.

But now we know that the Earth really does orbit the sun, and that when people have radical ideas, maybe we should listen to them.

I'm saying the word article a lot.

But what actually are articles?

An article is a small word that goes before a noun it tells us if something is general or specific.
冠詞とは名詞の前につく小さな言葉で、それが一般的か特定的かを示します。
The first rule I'm going to teach you today is about the indefinite article.
今日教える最初のルールは、不定冠詞についてです。
The indefinite articles in English are a and an, and we use this before a singular noun.
英語の不定冠詞は a と an で、単数名詞の前に使います。
In the story, I said a boy, a radical idea, and an unusual theory because these are not specific; they're general.
物語の中で a boy、a radical idea、an unusual theory と言ったのは、これらが特定ではなく一般的だからです。
They're just some boy, some theory.
ただの少年、ただの説にすぎません。
So when you're speaking about something non-specific, use a or an, the indefinite article.
だから、非特定的なものについて話すときは、不定冠詞の a か an を使います。
That brings me to the second rule today: when to use a or an.
そこで今日の2つ目のルールです：a と an をいつ使い分けるか。
We use a when the next sound is a consonant sound.
次の音が子音のときは a を使います。
For example, a Megalodon, a eucalyptus plant, a rainbow unicorn.
例えば、a Megalodon、a eucalyptus plant、a rainbow unicorn です。
I'd like one of those.

Did you notice that eucalyptus plant begins with an e,
eucalyptus plant が e で始まることにお気づきでしたか、
which is a vowel, of course, but the sound u is a consonant sound, so we use a.

We use an when the next word begins with a vowel sound.
次の単語が母音で始まるときは an を使います。
For example, an igloo, an air, an unusual person.
例えば、an igloo、an air、an unusual person です。
Again, remember what I said about eucalyptus plant.
繰り返しますが、eucalyptus plant について言ったことを思い出してください。
Well, air is similar.
air も同じようなものです。
Air begins with a consonant, but the consonant is silent, so we use an an air.
air は子音で始まりますが、その子音は発音しないので、an を使って an air と言います。
The third rule is about when we don't use articles.
3つ目のルールは、冠詞を使わない場合についてです。
We don't use articles when we talk about things in general, and we use the plural form.
一般的なことについて話すときは冠詞を使わず、複数形を使います。
In the story, I said people believe and radical ideas, no article.
物語の中で、私は人々が信じていることや過激な考えと言いましたが、冠詞はありません。
The fourth rule is that we don't use an article for abstract nouns in English.
4つ目のルールは、英語では抽象名詞に冠詞を使わないということです。
So hope, love, or friendship.
つまり hope、love、または friendship です。
Rule number five is about the definite article.
ルールその5は定冠詞についてです。
I used the definite article in the story and just now.

And there's just one definite article in English.

We can use the with singular or plural nouns when we're talking about something specific

or when we talk about something that we already talked about, like when I said the story because I'm talking about the story I just told you,

We also use the definite article when there's only one of something, and this is the sixth rule: the sun, the earth, the center, and the universe.

And coming in seventh today, we use the definite article in certain time phrases like at the time or at the weekend.
そして今日7つ目として、at the time や at the weekend のような特定の時間を表す表現では定冠詞を使います。
The eighth and final rule we look at today is about the pronunciation of the word the.
今日見る8つ目で最後のルールは、the という単語の発音についてです。
Normally, we say the, the sun, the moon, and all these words are followed by a consonant sound.

But when the next word is a vowel sound, it changes.

The becomes the.

It's made longer, and there's an intruding yuh sound, like the earth.

Say it after me: the earth.

We also use this pronunciation when we say the internet.

Very important: the internet.

Now, after all that information, I wouldn't be surprised if your head is spinning as fast as here.
