Six Minute English from BBC Learning English.
BBCラーニングイングリッシュのシックス・ミニッツ・イングリッシュです。
Hello, this is Six Minute English from BBC Learning English.
こんにちは、BBCラーニングイングリッシュのシックス・ミニッツ・イングリッシュです。
I'm Sam, and I'm Rob.
私はサム、そしてこちらはロブです。
In this program, we'll be hearing about an issue experienced by many child refugees who are forced to leave their home, the loss of their first native language or mother tongue, as they start a new life, learning to speak a new language in a new country.
今回の番組では、多くの難民の子供たちが直面する問題についてお話しします。彼らは故郷を離れることを余儀なくされ、新しい国で新しい言語を学び、新しい生活を始める中で、母国語を失ってしまうのです。
Julie Tadevi and her family left their home in what was then Czechoslovakia and is now the Czech Republic during the Cold War when Julie was a small child.
ジュリー・タデヴィさんと彼女の家族は、冷戦時代、ジュリーさんがまだ幼い頃に、当時のチェコスロバキア（現在のチェコ共和国）の家を離れました。
After several years travelling through Europe, they arrived in Canada as political refugees with no English.
ヨーロッパを数年間旅した後、彼らは英語を全く話せない政治難民としてカナダに到着しました。
We'll be hearing about Julie's childhood when learning English started to replace her native language Czech.
英語を学ぶ過程で、ジュリーさんの母国語であるチェコ語がどのように置き換わっていったのか、彼女の子供時代の話を聞いていきます。
And as usual, we'll be learning some new vocabulary as well.
そしていつものように、新しい語彙も学んでいきます。
But first, I have a question, Rob.
ですがその前に、ロブ、あなたに質問があります。
Julie's family left their home as political refugees, but every year millions of people are also displaced because of war, persecution, or the damaging effects of climate change.
ジュリーさんの家族は政治難民として故郷を離れましたが、毎年何百万人もの人々が、戦争や迫害、あるいは気候変動による被害のために避難を余儀なくされています。
So, according to the United Nations, how many people around the world are currently living as displaced refugees?
では、国連によると、現在世界中で何人の人々が難民として避難生活を送っているでしょうか？
Is it A.
A.
three million, B.
300万人、B.
fifty three million, or C.
5300万人、それともC.
one hundred and three million?
1億300万人でしょうか？
I'll guess it's a hundred and three million.
1億300万人だと思います。
I'll reveal the answer later in the program, Rob.
答えは番組の後半で発表しますね、ロブ。
Like many child refugees, Julie spoke only her mother tongue, Czech, at home with her brothers, sisters, and parents.
多くの難民の子供たちと同じように、ジュリーさんは家では兄弟や両親と母国語であるチェコ語だけを話していました。
Who, in the beginning, spoke no English at all.
当初、彼らは英語を全く話せませんでした。
Here, she describes to Michael Rosen, presenter of BBC Radio Four program Word of Mouth, going to an English speaking school for the first time.
ここで彼女は、BBCラジオ4の番組「ワード・オブ・マウス」の司会者マイケル・ローゼンに対し、初めて英語を話す学校に通った時のことを語っています。
So you went into school not to start off with really understanding what was going on, is that right?
つまり、学校に入った当初は、何が起きているのか全く理解できていなかったということですね？
That's right.
その通りです。
I just kind of interpreted things as best I could, and my memory of that is that that was not particularly difficult or traumatic.
私はただ、自分なりに精一杯解釈していました。その時の記憶としては、特に難しいとかトラウマになるようなことではなかったように思います。
I think by then I'd had the experience of being dunked into various unfamiliar languages numerous times, and I had faith that it would sort itself out and that everything would be just fine.
その頃には、馴染みのない言語の中に何度も放り込まれるという経験をしていたので、なんとかなる、すべてうまくいくという確信がありました。
And it was, was of course.
そしてもちろん、その通りになりました。
At school, Julie was dunked into unfamiliar situations, a bit like a biscuit being dunked into a cup of tea.
学校でジュリーは、紅茶に浸されるビスケットのように、馴染みのない状況に放り込まれました。
Often, dunk means to dip something into a liquid, but here the meaning is that Julie was suddenly dropped into a new situation for a while, then taken out.
「dunk」は通常、液体に何かを浸すことを意味しますが、ここではジュリーが突然新しい状況にしばらく置かれ、その後そこから出されたという意味で使われています。
As her family travelled through Europe, by the time she arrived in Canada, Julie had been exposed to several other languages, including Italian and French.
家族でヨーロッパを旅し、カナダに到着するまでに、ジュリーはイタリア語やフランス語を含むいくつかの言語に触れていました。
She had experienced many difficulties, but never given up hope of finding a new home.
彼女は多くの困難を経験しましたが、新しい家を見つけるという希望を捨てることはありませんでした。
Julie had faith, in other words, trust or confidence that everything would sort itself out.
ジュリーには信念、言い換えれば、すべてが自然と解決するという信頼や自信がありました。
A phrase meaning to stop being a problem automatically, without having to do anything.
何もせずとも、問題が自動的に解決することを意味するフレーズです。
Over the following years, Julie faced many challenges: going to school and making friends, helping her parents as they struggled in the English-speaking world, and grieving for her native language, which she slowly forgot, and with it the chance to speak Czech with her dad before he passed away.
その後の数年間、ジュリーは多くの課題に直面しました。学校に通い友達を作ること、英語圏で苦労する両親を助けること、そして母国語を失う悲しみです。彼女は少しずつ母国語を忘れ、それとともに父親が亡くなる前にチェコ語で話す機会も失ってしまいました。
Julie shares her thoughts on losing and refinding her mother tongue in her book Memory Speaks.
ジュリーは自身の著書『Memory Speaks』の中で、母国語を失い、そして再発見することについての考えを語っています。
Through it all, Julie kept alive her belief that by speaking two, three, or even more languages, we don't forget who we are, but instead gain a sense of tolerance, an idea which she talked about with BBC Radio Four's Word of Mouth.
どんな時もジュリーは、2つ、3つ、あるいはそれ以上の言語を話すことで、私たちは自分自身を忘れるのではなく、むしろ寛容さを身につけるのだという信念を持ち続けました。この考えについて、彼女はBBCラジオ4の『Word of Mouth』で語っています。
The idea that you can be both of Mexican ancestry, for example, and speak Spanish, and to be a full-fledged American, or in my case, come from a country like the Czech Republic, continue to speak my language, and to be Canadian and very proudly so, and very invested in Canada as a society.
例えば、メキシコ系のルーツを持ちながらスペイン語を話し、一人前の米国人であること。あるいは私のように、チェコ共和国のような国から来て、自分の言語を話し続けながら、カナダ人として誇りを持ち、カナダという社会に深く貢献すること、といった考え方です。
There is a number of studies that suggest that the very presence of people with blended ideas in a society seems to lead to greater acceptance between groups.
社会の中に多様な考えを持つ人々が存在すること自体が、グループ間のより大きな受容につながることを示唆する研究がいくつも存在します。
It creates the sense that this is not an either-or that we can coexist.
これは二者択一ではなく、共存できるという感覚を生み出します。
Perhaps precisely because we have evidence that these cultures can coexist within a single person.
おそらく、これらの文化がひとりの人間の中に共存できるという証拠があるからこそでしょう。
For Julie, there is no contradiction in being a Canadian refugee speaking Czech, or a Spanish-speaking immigrant who's a full-fledged or fully developed American.
ジュリーにとって、チェコ語を話すカナダの難民であることや、スペイン語を話す移民でありながら、完全に成熟したアメリカ人であることに矛盾はありません。
These are not either-or situations.
これらは二者択一の状況ではありません。
Haste is where there is only a choice between two options, with no third possibility.
二者択一とは、第三の可能性がなく、2つの選択肢のどちらかしか選べない状況のことです。
Instead, a peaceful coexistence can develop, as shown in the life of Julie Sedivy herself.
その代わりに、ジュリー・セディヴィ自身の人生が示すように、平和的な共存が発展し得るのです。
Right, it's time to reveal the answer to my question: How many people around the world, like Julie, are living as displaced refugees?
さて、私の質問の答えを発表する時間です。世界中でジュリーのように、故郷を追われた難民として暮らしている人は何人いるでしょうか？
Well, I said it was a hundred three million.
ええと、私は1億300万人と言いましたね。
Was I right?
正解でしたか？
And that was the correct answer, Rob.
その通り、正解です、ロブ。
A number which, according to the UN, is only going to grow.
国連によると、その数は増える一方です。
Now it's time to recap the vocabulary we've learned from this program about losing our mother tongue, the native language we were brought up speaking by our parents.
さて、この番組で学んだ語彙を振り返る時間です。母国語、つまり両親に育てられる過程で話していた言語を失うことについてです。
If something is dunked, it's dipped into a liquid like a biscuit in a cup of tea.
「dunked」とは、紅茶にビスケットを浸すように、液体に浸すことを意味します。
But if someone is dunked into a situation, they're suddenly placed into a new and unfamiliar setting before being removed again after short time.
しかし、誰かが「dunked into a situation」と言われる場合、それは新しい不慣れな環境に突然置かれ、短期間でそこから離れることを意味します。
If you have faith in something or someone, you have trust or confidence in them.
何かに、あるいは誰かに「faith」を持つということは、信頼や自信を抱くということです。
The phrasal verb to sort itself out means to stop being a problem without having to do anything.
句動詞の「to sort itself out」は、何もせずに問題が解決することを意味します。
The adjective full-fledged means completely developed.
形容詞の「full-fledged」は、完全に発達した、一人前のという意味です。
And finally, an either-or is a situation where only a choice between two options is possible, with no third alternative.
そして最後に、「either-or」とは、第三の選択肢がなく、2つの選択肢のどちらかしか選べない状況のことです。
And that brings us to the end of this program.
これでこの番組は終わりです。
Bye for now.
それでは、さようなら。
Bye bye.
バイバイ。
Six Minute English from BBC Learning English.
BBCラーニング・イングリッシュの「シックス・ミニッツ・イングリッシュ」。
Hello, I'm Rob.
こんにちは、ロブです。
Welcome to Six Minute English.
「シックス・ミニッツ・イングリッシュ」へようこそ。
I'm joined today by Fin.
今日はフィンと一緒に進行します。
Hello, or as we say in Chinese, ni hao, or shi fin, which means hello.
こんにちは。中国語では「ニーハオ」と言いますね。あるいは「シー・フィン」、これはこんにちはという意味です。
I'm Fin.
フィンです。
Ah, ni hao, ni hao.
ああ、ニーハオ、ニーハオ。
Where did you learn to speak Chinese?
どこで中国語を学んだのですか？
At university, though.
大学です。
I must say I'm a bit rusty now.
ただ、今は少し錆びついていると言わざるを得ませんね。
Rusty?
錆びついている？
You look okay.
大丈夫そうに見えますよ。
But what you really mean is you're not as fluent as you were before.
でも、あなたが本当に言いたいのは、以前ほど流暢ではないということですね。
That's right.
その通りです。
Learning and practicing a language requires effort.
言語を学び、練習するには努力が必要です。
But the children of the school in London that we're going to be hearing about today have no choice.
しかし、今日お話しするロンドンの学校の子供たちには、選択肢がありません。
They're from different countries and no less than 42 languages are spoken in the playground.
彼らはさまざまな国から来ており、校庭では42もの言語が話されています。
It's incredible.
信じられません。
In in the playground, that's the area in the schoolyard where children play during their break between lessons.
校庭というのは、授業の合間の休憩時間に子供たちが遊ぶ学校の敷地のことです。
They speak 42 languages.
彼らは42の言語を話すのです。
Wow.
わあ。
Yes.
ええ。
Of course, they all have to learn English because they live here.
もちろん、彼らはここに住んでいるので、全員が英語を学ばなければなりません。
But more on that in a moment.
しかし、それについては後ほど詳しくお話しします。
First, as the tradition goes, I'm going to challenge you with a question, Fin.
まずは恒例の質問ですが、フィン、あなたに挑戦しますよ。
Okay, I'm ready.
わかりました、準備はできています。
Or what do you say, hallo?
それとも、ハローと言いますか？
Ah.
ああ。
I'm ready.
準備はできています。
Okay.
わかりました。
Which country has the most official languages?
最も多くの公用語を持つ国はどこでしょうか？
Is it A.
Aですか。
India.
インド。
B.
B。
Nigeria.
ナイジェリア。
Or C.
それともC。
South Africa?
南アフリカ？
Good question.
いい質問ですね。
I would say India or Nigeria.
インドかナイジェリアだと思います。
Let's say Nigeria.
ナイジェリアにしておきましょう。
Okay, I will reveal the answer at the end of the program.
わかりました、番組の最後に答えを発表します。
So let's talk about Byron Court, a school with 600 pupils in northwest London.
では、ロンドン北西部にある600人の生徒が通うバイロン・コート校についてお話ししましょう。
The school gets high marks for integration marks.
この学校は統合の面で高い評価を得ています。
So here you mean scores in tests or exams?
ここで言う「高い評価」とは、テストや試験の点数のことですか？
They get high marks for integration.
彼らは統合の面で高い評価を得ています。
Integration means bringing people together, as they have pupils from all over the world.
統合とは、世界中から生徒が集まっているため、人々を一つにまとめることを意味します。
Yes, they come from places as far apart as Iraq, Somalia, India, Romania, and Slovakia.
ええ、彼らはイラク、ソマリア、インド、ルーマニア、スロバキアなど、遠く離れた場所から来ています。
Many are children of immigrants and refugees.
多くは移民や難民の子供たちです。
So how difficult is it for these children to learn English?
では、これらの子供たちが英語を学ぶのはどれほど難しいのでしょうか？
Well, let's listen to this pupil from Byron Court.
では、バイロン・コート校のこの生徒の声を聞いてみましょう。
Where did she learn her first words in English?
彼女はどこで最初の英語を学んだのでしょうか？
When I was two years old, I went to nursery.
2歳の時に保育園に行きました。
When I came here, I got to learn all my English.
ここに来て、英語をすべて学びました。
She says she began to learn English at nursery.
彼女は保育園で英語を学び始めたと言っています。
That's a place where very young children are looked after while their parents are at work.
それは、両親が仕事をしている間、幼い子供たちが預けられる場所のことです。
Byron Court head teacher, the person in charge of a school, believes children feel integrated because she tries to celebrate all the different cultures and avoids suggesting one culture is better than the other.
学校の責任者であるバイロン・コート校の校長先生は、すべての異なる文化を尊重し、一つの文化が他より優れていると示唆することを避けることで、子供たちが統合されていると感じられるよう努めていると考えています。
It all sounds very nice, Rob, but I wonder what happens in the classroom.
ロブ、どれも素晴らしい話に聞こえるけど、教室では実際に何が起きているのかしら。
I mean, many pupils are learning basic words in English while at the same time studying things like science and maths, also in English.
つまり、多くの生徒が英語で基本的な単語を学びながら、同時に科学や数学といった教科も英語で学んでいるということよね。
So quite a challenge, eh?
かなりの難題じゃない？
It is indeed a big problem.
確かに大きな問題ですね。
So does this lower educational standards?
では、教育水準は下がってしまうのでしょうか？
Those are the knowledge and skills students should have at a particular level.
それは、生徒がある特定のレベルで身につけておくべき知識やスキルのことです。
Yes, it does, but not for long, says Martin Pendegast, educational officer at Brent Council.
ええ、下がりますが、それは長くは続かないとブレント区の教育担当官マーティン・ペンデガスト氏は言います。
That's the area where the school is located.
そこは学校がある地域のことです。
Listen out for the verb he uses, which means testing children's performance in Brent.
彼が使う動詞に注目してください。それはブレントの子供たちの成績を評価することを意味します。
Our children perform just below national averages when they're assessed at seven years old, but by the time they're eleven, they've caught up with national standards, and at sixteen, they're flying.
私たちの地域の子供たちは7歳で評価を受けると全国平均をわずかに下回りますが、11歳になる頃には全国水準に追いつき、16歳になると飛躍的に伸びるのです。
He says they are assessed, which means tested and given scores.
彼は子供たちが評価される、つまりテストを受けて点数を与えられると言っています。
When they're seven years old, at that time, they have worse results than children in other British schools.
7歳の時点では、他のイギリスの学校の子供たちよりも成績が悪いのです。
But by the time they celebrate their eleventh birthday, they've caught up.
しかし、11歳の誕生日を迎える頃には追いついています。
They become equal with pupils of their age elsewhere in the country.
彼らは国内の他の地域の同年代の生徒たちと肩を並べるようになります。
And by sixteen, he says they're flying, which is a nice way to describe these children's progress.
そして16歳になると、彼は子供たちが飛躍していると言います。これは彼らの成長を表現する素敵な言い方ですね。
It's good for them because they end up as bilingual adults, speaking two languages fluently.
彼らにとっては、2つの言語を流暢に話すバイリンガルの大人になれるので良いことです。
So their effort pays off.
だから彼らの努力は報われるのです。
At Byron Court, the concern is more about pupils who are native speakers of English.
バイロン・コート校では、英語を母国語とする生徒たちについて懸念が持たれています。
Parents worry about their children not learning much.
親たちは子供たちが十分に学べていないのではないかと心配しています。
Maybe the best thing is for everybody to try to learn a second language.
おそらく一番良いのは、みんなが第二言語を学ぼうとすることでしょう。
Not a bad thing in today's small world.
今の小さな世界では、悪いことではありませんね。
Talking about learning languages, I want to know if I got the answer to your question right.
言語学習の話ですが、あなたの質問に対する私の答えが合っていたか知りたいです。
The question was about the country with the most official languages.
質問は、公用語が最も多い国についてでしたよね。
Ah, and the options I put you were India, Nigeria, or South Africa.
ああ、選択肢はインド、ナイジェリア、南アフリカでしたね。
And I said Nigeria, but maybe I think India now.
私はナイジェリアと言いましたが、今はインドかなと思っています。
Can I change my mind?
考えを変えてもいいですか？
You can if you want, because you'll still be wrong.
変えてもいいですよ、どのみち間違っていますから。
No, really.
いや、本当に。
The country with the most official languages is the Republic of South Africa.
公用語が最も多い国は南アフリカ共和国です。
Ah, eleven languages.
ああ、11の言語ですね。
Eleven.
11です。
Interesting.
興味深いですね。
India has eighteen languages that are recognised by its constitution and can be considered as official.
インドには憲法で認められ、公用語とみなされる言語が18あります。
However, the difference is that each language is recognised as the official language of a certain area, such as Kashmir, for example.
ただし、違いは、それぞれの言語がカシミール地方のように、特定の地域の公用語として認められている点です。
Okay, right.
なるほど、そうですね。
So I was kind of right in a different way.
つまり、別の意味で私は正しかったわけですね。
The overall official language is Hindi.
全体的な公用語はヒンディー語です。
Fascinating.
魅力的ですね。
Well, lots of languages to learn.
ええ、学ぶべき言語がたくさんありますね。
In any case, I'll stick with English for now.
いずれにせよ、今のところは英語にしておきます。
It's time to wrap up.
そろそろ締めくくりの時間です。
Okay.
わかりました。
So let's remember some of the words we explained today.
では、今日説明した単語をいくつか振り返ってみましょう。
They were rusty, playground, marks, integration, nursery, head teacher, educational standards, assess, caught up, bilingual, mercy book.
rusty（錆びついた）、playground（遊び場）、marks（成績）、integration（統合）、nursery（保育園）、head teacher（校長）、educational standards（教育水準）、assess（評価する）、caught up（追いつく）、bilingual（バイリンガルの）、mercy book（慈悲の書）でした。

Hello, this is Six Minute English from BBC Learning English.
こんにちは、BBCラーニング・イングリッシュの「6分間英語」です。
I'm Neil, and I'm Phil.
私はニール、そしてこちらはフィルです。
And now that we've done our hellos, let's hear some greetings in different languages from around the world.
挨拶も済んだところで、世界中のさまざまな言語での挨拶を聞いてみましょう。
But what do these languages have in common?
しかし、これらの言語にはどのような共通点があるのでしょうか？
Gazi.
ガジ。
Di.
ディ。
The list is too long.
リストが長すぎます。
I'm missing out.
聞き逃しています。
Julie.
ジュリー。
We should be looking at all our feet.
私たちは足元をよく見るべきですね。
I'm afraid I don't know what they have in common because I don't recognise any of them.
残念ながら、どれも知らない言語なので、共通点が何なのかわかりません。
Well, sadly, the one thing uniting these languages is that they're all in danger.
悲しいことに、これらの言語を一つにまとめる共通点は、すべて消滅の危機に瀕しているということです。
We often hear about animals at risk of extinction, but a recent study by the Australian National University found that out of the world's seven thousand existing languages, half are under threat.
絶滅の危機に瀕している動物についてはよく耳にしますが、オーストラリア国立大学の最近の研究によると、世界に存在する7000の言語のうち、半分が脅威にさらされているそうです。
But what can be done to save languages from dying out?
しかし、言語の消滅を防ぐために何ができるのでしょうか？
That's what we'll be discussing in this programme.
それこそが、この番組で議論することです。
And as usual, we'll be learning some useful new vocabulary as well.
そしていつものように、役立つ新しい語彙もいくつか学びます。
But first, I have a question for you, Phil, and it's about a country which used to be one of the most linguistically rich places on Earth, Australia.
ですがその前に、フィル、あなたに質問があります。かつて地球上で最も言語的に豊かな場所の一つだった国、オーストラリアについてです。
Before European settlers arrived in the 1800s, Australia had over 200 languages spoken by the native Aboriginal people who had lived there for thousands of years.
1800年代にヨーロッパからの入植者が到着する前、オーストラリアには何千年も前からそこに住んでいた先住民アボリジニによって話される200以上の言語が存在していました。
Many Aboriginal languages were destroyed by the brutal laws of the Australian government at the time.
多くのアボリジニの言語は、当時のオーストラリア政府の残酷な法律によって破壊されました。
However, some survived.
しかし、生き残ったものもありました。
So, which of the following Aboriginal languages is still spoken today?
では、次のアボリジニの言語のうち、今日でも話されているのはどれでしょうか？
Is it A.
Aの
Jinang, B.
ジナング語か、Bの
Alawa, or C.
アラワ語か、それともCでしょうか。
I'll guess it's Jinang.
ジナング語だと思います。
Okay, Phil, I'll reveal the answer later in the programme.
わかりました、フィル。答えは番組の後半で発表します。
The sad truth is that it was no accident that the Aboriginal languages died out, given the cruel treatment of Aboriginal people.
悲しい真実は、アボリジニの人々への残酷な扱いを考えれば、アボリジニの言語が消滅したのは偶然ではなかったということです。
Children were removed from their mothers and sent to schools thousands of miles away to learn English, and even today, Aboriginal communities experience racism and poverty.
子供たちは母親から引き離され、英語を学ぶために何千マイルも離れた学校へ送られました。今日でも、アボリジニのコミュニティは人種差別と貧困を経験しています。
Another Aboriginal language, Bhangala, officially died in 1960 when its last native speaker, Elder Mooney Davis, passed away.
もう一つのアボリジニの言語であるバンガラ語は、最後の母語話者であった長老ムーニー・デイビス氏が亡くなった1960年に公式に消滅しました。
But Bhangala has been brought back to life, and today it's spoken between parents and children, and even learned in school.
しかし、バンガラ語は蘇り、今日では親子の間で話され、学校でも学ばれています。
So, how did a dead language with no living speakers come back to life?
では、話者が一人もいなくなった死語が、どのようにして蘇ったのでしょうか？
The unusual answer involves a dictionary and a professor of linguistics.
その意外な答えには、辞書と言語学の教授が関係しています。
Here's Professor Gilad Zuckerman telling his story for BBC World Service program "People Fixing the World." I had a dictionary written by a German Lutheran Christian missionary in 1844.
BBCワールドサービスの番組「People Fixing the World」で、ギラッド・ザッカーマン教授がその物語を語っています。「私には1844年にドイツ人のルター派キリスト教宣教師によって書かれた辞書がありました。」
His name was Klamor Wilhelm Schulman, and he wrote the dictionary with up to 3,500 words, which is a lot, because he wanted to Christianize the heathens.
彼の名はクラモール・ヴィルヘルム・シュルマン。彼は異教徒をキリスト教に改宗させるために、最大3500語もの単語を収録した辞書を書きました。これは非常に多い数です。
So it's a poppy term, writing the wrong of the past by using a tool written for one goal in order to achieve the diametrically opposite goal.
つまり、ある目的のために書かれた道具を使って、それとは正反対の目的を達成することで過去の過ちを正すという、皮肉な話なのです。
Professor Zuckerman found an English to Bhangala dictionary written in 1844 by a German missionary, a person sent to a foreign country to teach their religion to the people living there.
ザッカーマン教授は、1844年にドイツ人の宣教師（その土地に住む人々に宗教を教えるために外国へ派遣された人物）によって書かれた英語・バンガラ語辞書を発見しました。
Christian missionaries used the dictionary to teach English to what they called Aboriginal heathens.
キリスト教の宣教師たちは、その辞書を使って、彼らが「アボリジニの異教徒」と呼ぶ人々に英語を教えていました。
Heathen is an old-fashioned word for someone who belongs to no religion, or to a religion that is not Christianity, Judaism, or Islam.
「Heathen（異教徒）」は、どの宗教にも属さない人、あるいはキリスト教、ユダヤ教、イスラム教以外の宗教を信仰する人を指す古風な言葉です。
Professor Zuckerman puts the words heathen in quotation marks.
ザッカーマン教授は「heathen」という言葉を引用符で囲んでいます。
The phrase in quotation marks is used to show the actual words someone else has written or said, but here the phrase is used ironically.
引用符で囲まれたフレーズは、誰かが書いたり言ったりした実際の言葉を示すために使われますが、ここでは皮肉を込めて使われています。
Professor Zuckerman is questioning the real meaning of the word heathens.
ザッカーマン教授は「heathen」という言葉の真の意味を問い直しているのです。
He is signalling that he doesn't think Aboriginals are heathens at all.
彼は、アボリジニの人々が異教徒だとは全く思っていないことを示唆しています。
A bit like adding a wink at the end of a sentence so people know you're not serious.
文末にウィンクを付け加えて、本気ではないことを相手に伝えるようなものです。
What's ironic is that Professor Zuckerman used the missionary dictionary, not to spread Christianity in English, but to save an Aboriginal language from extinction.
皮肉なのは、ザッカーマン教授が宣教師の辞書を使ったのが、英語でキリスト教を広めるためではなく、アボリジニの言語を絶滅から救うためだったということです。
So he calls it topsy turvy, meaning upside down.
そこで彼はそれを「topsy turvy」、つまり「あべこべ」と呼んでいます。
Professor Zuckerman also says he is writing the wrongs of the past, a phrase which means doing something to correct a historical injustice from the past.
ザッカーマン教授はまた、過去の過ちを正す（writing the wrongs of the past）とも言っています。これは、過去の歴史的不正を正すために何かを行うという意味のフレーズです。
In this case, the destruction of Aboriginal language and culture.
この場合は、アボリジニの言語と文化の破壊のことです。
Speaking your own language is about more than communication.
自分の言語を話すことは、単なるコミュニケーション以上の意味を持ちます。
It means knowing your roots and feeling good about yourself.
それは自分のルーツを知り、自分自身に誇りを持つことを意味します。
I think it's time we reveal the answer to your question, Neil.
ニール、そろそろ質問の答えを明かす時間ですね。
Okay, well, Phil, you guessed that Jinang was another living Aboriginal language, which was the correct answer.
そうですね、フィル。あなたはジナング語がもう一つの現存するアボリジニの言語だと推測しましたが、それが正解でした。
Right.
その通り。
Let's recap the vocabulary we've learned, starting with missionary.
学んだ語彙を復習しましょう。まずは「missionary（宣教師）」です。

Six Minute English from BBC Learning English.
BBCラーニング・イングリッシュの「6ミニッツ・イングリッシュ」。
Hello, this is Six Minute English from BBC Learning English.
こんにちは、BBCラーニング・イングリッシュの「6ミニッツ・イングリッシュ」です。
I'm Neil.
私はニール。
And I'm Beth.
そして私はベスです。
Would you like some fried chicken and chips with gravy, Beth?
ベス、フライドチキンとチップスにグレービーソースをかけようか？
No thanks, Neil.
いいえ、ニール。結構です。
I don't really like fried chicken.
フライドチキンはあまり好きじゃないの。
It's too oily for me.
私には油っこすぎるわ。
Okay, no problem.
わかった、問題ないよ。
But maybe you'd like some organic poulet rôti in a tendre jus with frites.
でも、オーガニックのローストチキンに、タンドル・ジュ（特製ソース）を添えて、フリット（フライドポテト）を合わせるのはどうかな。
Oh, that sounds interesting.
あら、それは面白そうね。
What is it?
どんな料理なの？
Well, it's French for chicken and chips with gravy.
まあ、フランス語でフライドチキンとチップスにグレービーソースをかけたものだよ。
It's a strange fact, but the same dish described using different words can make it sound more delicious, more exotic, and more desirable.
奇妙な事実だけど、同じ料理でも違う言葉で説明すると、より美味しく、よりエキゾチックで、より魅力的に聞こえることがあるんだ。
Restaurants think carefully about the language they use to describe the food on their menus, trying to make it sound appealing, tasty, or poetic.
レストランはメニューの料理を説明する言葉を慎重に選び、魅力的で、美味しそうで、詩的に聞こえるように工夫しているんだ。
Instead of hamburgers, we have gourmet burgers.
ハンバーガーの代わりに、グルメバーガーがあるようにね。
It's jus, not gravy, and raspberry coulis sounds a lot tastier than raspberry sauce.
グレービーソースではなく「ジュ」だし、ラズベリーソースよりも「ラズベリークーリ」の方がずっと美味しそうに聞こえるだろう。
Many of the words used to describe gourmet food—that's food which is higher quality and more sophisticated than usual—are French, coming from a country with a long tradition of high-level cooking called haute cuisine.
グルメフード（通常の料理よりも高品質で洗練された料理）を説明する言葉の多くはフランス語で、オートキュイジーヌと呼ばれる高度な料理の長い伝統を持つ国から来ているんだ。
But how does the language used to describe food affect our psychology, and help restaurants make menus which are both tempting and profitable?
しかし、料理を説明する言葉は私たちの心理にどのような影響を与え、レストランが魅力的で利益の出るメニューを作るのにどう役立っているのだろうか？
That's what we'll be finding out in this program, along with some useful new vocabulary as well.
この番組では、そのことについて探っていくよ。役立つ新しい語彙も一緒にね。
But first, I have a question for you, Neil.
でもその前に、ニール、君に質問があるんだ。
To train as a classical French chef takes months as a full-time apprentice.
フランスの古典的なシェフとして修行するには、フルタイムの徒弟として何ヶ月もかかる。
But what is the name of the most famous cooking school teaching French haute cuisine?
では、フランスのオートキュイジーヌを教える最も有名な料理学校の名前は何だろう？
Is it A.
A.
Le Cordon Bleu, B.
ル・コルドン・ブルー、B.
Le Cordon Rouge, or C.
ル・コルドン・ルージュ、それともC.
Le Cordon Noir?
ル・コルドン・ノワールかな？
Well, I think it's Le Cordon Bleu.
うーん、ル・コルドン・ブルーだと思うよ。
Okay, Neil.
わかった、ニール。
I'll reveal the correct answer later.
正解は後で発表するね。
It's important for restaurants to describe items on the menu so diners know what to expect, and many chefs think foreign words sound more exciting.
レストランにとって、客が何を期待すべきか分かるようにメニューの品目を説明することは重要で、多くのシェフは外国語の方がエキサイティングに聞こえると考えている。
But according to linguist Dr.
しかし、言語学者のケリー・マトウィック博士によると、
Kerry Matwick, the use of French is decreasing.
フランス語の使用は減少しているそうだ。
Here, Kerry explains why to Ruth Alexander, presenter of BBC World Service program The Food Chain.
ここで、ケリーがBBCワールドサービスの番組「ザ・フード・チェーン」の司会者ルース・アレクサンダーにその理由を説明しているよ。
Yeah, there are studies that show that because it sounds fancier, you know, French food has long been considered the gourmet food.
ええ、フランス料理は長い間グルメフードと見なされてきたから、より高級に聞こえるという研究結果があるのよ。
It was popular, but I would say now there is a tendency to not use French because it sounds pretentious.
以前は人気がありましたが、今はフランス語を使うと気取っているように聞こえるため、避ける傾向があると言えるでしょう。
So it can turn a diner off.
そのため、客を遠ざけてしまう可能性があります。
Many restaurants use French names in menus because they sound fancy—an adjective meaning special or unusual—with lots of decoration.
多くのレストランがメニューにフランス語の名前を使うのは、それが特別で珍しい、つまり豪華な響きを持ち、装飾的だからです。
Kerry disagrees.
ケリーは反対です。
She thinks French names used to be popular, but are now seen as pretentious.
彼女は、フランス語の名前はかつては人気がありましたが、今では気取っていると見なされていると考えています。
If something is pretentious, it tries to appear more important or clever than it really is.
「気取っている（pretentious）」とは、実際よりも重要あるいは賢く見せようとすることを指します。
Some diners like the French names, but it turns other diners off.
フランス語の名前を好む客もいますが、他の客を遠ざけてしまうこともあります。
If something turns you off, it makes you stop feeling interested or excited.
「遠ざける（turn off）」とは、興味や興奮を失わせることを意味します。
Brazilian chef Caroline Martins agrees that using French names in menus is becoming a thing of the past.
ブラジル人シェフのキャロライン・マーティンズも、メニューにフランス語の名前を使うことは過去のものになりつつあるという意見に同意しています。
Caroline has stopped using French names in her pop-up restaurant Samba in Manchester, as she explained to Ruth Alexander for BBC World Service programme The Food Chain.
キャロラインは、BBCワールドサービスの番組「ザ・フード・チェーン」でルース・アレクサンダーに語ったように、マンチェスターにある自身のポップアップレストラン「サンバ」でフランス語の名前を使うのをやめました。
I am classically trained in French cuisine.
私はフランス料理の本格的な訓練を受けています。
I was using a lot of French terms, you know, and they wasn't very welcome.
以前はフランス語の用語を多用していましたが、あまり歓迎されませんでした。
You know, people would be very confused.
人々はとても混乱していました。
They would ask me, "Oh, what is this Bruno?
彼らは「ああ、このブリュノって何？」と聞いてきました。
What is this chef?
「このシェフは何？」
" Now, you know, they will definitely avoid the dishes, or they will be sarcastic as well about it.
今では、彼らは間違いなくその料理を避けるか、あるいはそれについて皮肉を言うでしょう。
You know, had people get they would sit down and then they start seeing all the French terms and they just leave.
座ってフランス語の用語ばかりを目にすると、そのまま帰ってしまう客もいました。
Really?
本当に？
Yes, I had that happen.
ええ、実際にありました。
You had people walking out of the restaurant.
レストランから出て行ってしまう客がいたのですね。
They just think this isn't for me.
彼らは「これは自分向けではない」と思うのです。
This is for me.
これは私向け。
This is what is this?
これは何？
You know, what am I eating?
何を食べているのかわからない。
I want to eat food.
私は料理を食べたいのです。
I don't want to eat not names, posh names.
気取った名前なんて食べたくない。
You know.
そうでしょう。
Instead of feeling excited about dishes described in French, Caroline's diners were sarcastic about them.
フランス語で説明された料理にワクワクするどころか、キャロラインの店の客はそれらを皮肉っていました。
They mocked and made fun of them.
彼らはそれを嘲笑し、からかっていたのです。
Some diners even walked out.
中には店を出て行ってしまう客さえいました。
Caroline thinks French makes her cooking sound too posh, too fashionable, expensive, and not available to everyone.
キャロラインは、フランス語を使うと自分の料理が気取りすぎ、流行を追いすぎ、高価で、誰にでも手が届くものではないように聞こえてしまうと考えています。
She's now started using English and her native Brazilian Portuguese on the menu, and is pleased with the results.
彼女は現在、メニューに英語と母国語であるブラジル・ポルトガル語を使うようになり、その結果に満足しています。
Customers don't feel confused, and their curiosity about the Brazilian dishes starts a conversation with the waiter.
お客様は混乱を感じることはなく、ブラジル料理への好奇心がウェイターとの会話のきっかけになります。
All this talk of food is making me hungry, Neil.
そんなに食べ物の話ばかりされると、お腹が空いてきましたよ、ニール。
Anyway, it's time to reveal the answer to my question: What's the name of the famous French cooking school that teaches haute cuisine?
とにかく、私の質問の答えを発表する時間です。高級料理を教える有名なフランスの料理学校の名前は何でしょう？
I said it was Le Cordon Bleu.
私はル・コルドン・ブルーだと言いました。
Was I right?
正解でしたか？
Le Cordon Bleu was the correct answer.
ル・コルドン・ブルーが正解です。
The famous culinary arts school Le Cordon Bleu first opened its doors in Paris in 1895.
有名な料理芸術学校であるル・コルドン・ブルーは、1895年にパリで初めて門戸を開きました。

If you really love something, maybe a sport or a hobby, a music band or a TV show, you might call yourself a fan.
スポーツや趣味、音楽バンドやテレビ番組など、何かを本当に愛しているなら、自分を「ファン」と呼ぶかもしれません。
Nowadays, thanks to the internet, fans from around the world can meet online to share their passion, and this has led to a new word: fandom.
今日では、インターネットのおかげで、世界中のファンがオンラインで出会い、情熱を共有できるようになり、そこから「ファンダム」という新しい言葉が生まれました。
Fandom is more than simply being a fan; it's a whole culture created by a community of people to share their love of the same thing.
ファンダムは単なるファンであること以上のものです。それは、同じものへの愛を共有するために人々のコミュニティによって作られた一つの文化全体のことです。
What's more, fandom has started to develop its own language.
さらに、ファンダムは独自の言語を発展させ始めています。
In this program, we'll be taking a trip into the world of fandoms, and as usual, we'll be learning some new and useful vocabulary too.
この番組では、ファンダムの世界を旅しながら、いつものように新しくて役立つ語彙も学んでいきます。
But before that, I have a question for you, Neil.
その前に、ニール、あなたに質問があります。
The original word "fan" was first used about Americans in the early 20th century.
「ファン」という言葉が最初に使われたのは、20世紀初頭のアメリカ人についてでした。
But what were these Americans fans of?
では、彼らアメリカ人は何のファンだったのでしょうか？
Was it a Hollywood movie stars, b.
a. ハリウッドの映画スター、b.
baseball, or c.
野球、それともc.
Disney cartoons?
ディズニーアニメでしょうか？
I'll guess they were fans of Disney cartoons.
私はディズニーアニメのファンだったと推測します。
Okay, Neil, we'll find out later in the program.
わかりました、ニール。番組の後半で答え合わせをしましょう。
Michael Bond is the author of a new book, Fans.
マイケル・ボンドは新著『Fans』の著者です。
Here he discusses the meaning of fandom with BBC Radio Four program Word of Mouth.
ここで彼は、BBCラジオ4の番組『Word of Mouth』でファンダムの意味について語っています。
Kings rule their kingdoms.
王は王国を支配します。
Fans certainly rule their fandoms.
ファンは確かに自分たちのファンダムを支配しています。
It taps into that ancient human impulse to belong to a group of like-minded people.
それは、同じ考えを持つ人々のグループに属したいという、人間の古くからの衝動を利用しているのです。
And of course, being a fan by yourself can be a challenging thing because fanish pursuits can look quirky and odd.
もちろん、一人でファンでいることは難しい場合もあります。なぜなら、ファンの活動は風変わりで奇妙に見えることがあるからです。
To even obsessive, yeah, obsessive, and you get often mocked.
強迫観念的とさえ言われることもあります。ええ、強迫観念的で、しばしば嘲笑の対象になります。
And I mean, if you're Jane Austen fan and and you want to dress up in bonnet and gown of the Regency era, it's it's it's difficult to do that by yourself in public.
つまり、もしあなたがジェーン・オースティンのファンで、リージェンシー時代のボンネットやガウンを着たいと思っても、公共の場で一人でそれをするのは難しいですよね。
But once you join a fandom, there's no problem.
しかし、一度ファンダムに参加してしまえば、何の問題もありません。
Fans are groups of like-minded people.
ファンとは、同じ考えを持つ人々のグループです。
They share similar opinions, ideas, or interests.
彼らは似たような意見やアイデア、興味を共有しています。
They do all kinds of weird and wonderful things together, such as dressing up as Harry Potter characters.
彼らはハリー・ポッターのキャラクターのコスプレをするなど、あらゆる種類の奇妙で素晴らしいことを一緒に行います。
Behaviour which might be called quirky, an adjective meaning odd or unusual, but in an interesting way.
「風変わり（quirky）」と呼ばれる行動。これは奇妙で珍しいという意味の形容詞ですが、興味深い方法で使われます。
Unfortunately, this quirky behaviour also means fans sometimes get mocked.
残念ながら、この風変わりな行動は、ファンが時に嘲笑される原因にもなります。
To mock somebody means to insult them by laughing at them in an unkind way.
誰かを「嘲笑する（mock）」とは、不親切な方法で笑いものにして侮辱することを意味します。
But this hasn't discouraged fans who have started using new words and phrases to show they belong to a particular fandom.
しかし、それでもファンはひるみません。彼らは特定のファンダムに属していることを示すために、新しい言葉やフレーズを使い始めています。
Here's Michael Bond again explaining the meaning of two new words about the behaviour of football fans to BBC Radio Four programme Word of Mouth.
再びマイケル・ボンドが、サッカーファンの行動に関する2つの新しい言葉の意味を、BBCラジオ4の番組『Word of Mouth』で解説します。
Academics who study fandoms say they love to use acronyms and abbreviations, and they've got several phrases which they use to describe the behaviour of football fans.
ファンダムを研究する学者は、彼らが頭字語や略語を好んで使うと言います。そして、サッカーファンの行動を説明するために使われるいくつかのフレーズがあります。
Burging, so that means basking in reflected glory.
「バーギング（Burging）」、これは「反射的な栄光に浸る（basking in reflected glory）」ことを意味します。
Oh, I love that.
ああ、それいいですね。
When your team wins, everyone wants a bit of the action.
自分のチームが勝つと、誰もがその喜びのおこぼれにあずかりたいと思うものです。
You take to the streets, dance around, and so the sophistication of that is is corping, which means cutting off reflected failure, and that is what people sometimes do when their team loses, and they don't want to be associated with that loss, that sense of failure.
街に出て踊り回る。その洗練された行動は「コーピング（CORFing）」と呼ばれ、これは「反射的失敗の切り離し（Cutting Off Reflected Failure）」を意味します。チームが負けた時、その敗北感と自分を関連付けたくないために人々が時折行う行動です。
Burging is made of an acronym of the words basking in reflected glory.
「バーギング（BIRGing）」は、「反射的栄光への浸り（Basking In Reflected Glory）」という言葉の頭文字から作られています。
It means feeling good about yourself when the football team you support wins.
これは、自分が応援しているサッカーチームが勝った時に、自分自身も良い気分になることを意味します。
Fans say we won, even though it was the players on the pitch, not the fans, who scored the goal.
ファンは「我々が勝った」と言いますが、実際にゴールを決めたのはピッチ上の選手であり、ファンではありません。
When their team wins, fans cheer and want a piece of the action.
チームが勝つと、ファンは歓声を上げ、その喜びの一部にあずかりたいと考えます。
An idiom meaning that they take part in celebrations and other exciting group activities and feel the success of the team as a personal success.
これは、祝賀会やその他のエキサイティングなグループ活動に参加し、チームの成功を自分自身の成功として感じることを意味する慣用句です。
The opposite of burging is corping, another acronym.
バーギングの反対語は、同じく頭文字をとった「コーピング」です。
This time of the words cutting off reflected failure.
今回は「反射的失敗の切り離し」という言葉です。
Corping involves distancing yourself from the team you support when they lose.
コーピングとは、応援しているチームが負けた時に、自分とチームとの間に距離を置くことを指します。
Instead of saying we won, you say they played rubbish.
「我々が勝った」と言う代わりに、「彼らはひどいプレーをした」と言うのです。
Of course, true fans never corf.
もちろん、真のファンは決してコーピングをしません。
In fact, some football fans take a kind of strange pessimistic pleasure when their team loses week after week.
実際、一部のサッカーファンは、チームが毎週負け続けると、ある種の奇妙で悲観的な喜びを感じることさえあります。
I can't imagine that's true of the Americans you mentioned.
あなたが言及したアメリカ人たちにそれが当てはまるとは思えませんね。
Beth.
ベス。
So what was the correct answer to your question?
では、あなたの質問の正解は何だったのでしょうか？
I asked who the original word fan was used to describe.
私は「ファン（fan）」という言葉がもともと誰を指して使われていたのかを尋ねました。
You said it was fans of Disney cartoons, which was the wrong answer.
あなたはディズニーアニメのファンだと答えましたが、それは間違いでした。
I'm afraid.
残念ながら。
Actually, it was baseball fans or fanatics, as they were called at the time.
実は、当時は「ファナティック（fanatics）」と呼ばれていた野球ファンたちのことでした。
Okay, let's recap the vocabulary we've learnt, starting with like-minded, an adjective describing people who share similar opinions, ideas, or interests.
さて、学んだ語彙を復習しましょう。まずは「like-minded（同じ考えを持つ）」。これは、似たような意見やアイデア、興味を共有する人々を表す形容詞です。
Quirky means odd or unusual, but in an attractive or interesting way.
「Quirky（風変わりな）」は、奇妙で普通ではないけれど、魅力的で興味深い方法でそうであることを意味します。
If you mock someone, you insult and laugh at them in an unkind way.
誰かを「mock（からかう）」とは、不親切な方法で侮辱したり笑ったりすることです。
Burging is short for basking in reflected glory.
「Burging（バーギング）」は「basking in reflected glory（反射的栄光への浸り）」の略です。
It means feeling good about yourself when the team you support wins.
これは、応援しているチームが勝った時に、自分自身も良い気分になることを意味します。
The opposite of this is corfing, an acronym of cutting off reflected failure, which means distancing yourself from your favourite team when they lose.
その反対が「corfing（コーピング）」で、「cutting off reflected failure（反射的失敗の切り離し）」の頭文字をとったもので、お気に入りのチームが負けた時に自分とチームとの距離を置くことを意味します。
And finally, if you want a piece or a slice of the action, you want to take part in a celebration or other exciting group activity to include yourself in a collective success.
最後に、もしあなたがその活動の一部や一端を担いたい、つまり、集団の成功に加わるために、お祝いやその他のエキサイティングなグループ活動に参加したいと思うなら。
