最初の部分、before leaving for their trip という句を見てみましょう。
The full adverb clause of time is before Liza and Ray left for their trip.
完全な時の副詞節は before Liza and Ray left for their trip です。
To reduce this adverb clause of time to an adverb phrase, we change left to the -ing form leaving.
この時の副詞節を副詞句に短縮するために、left を -ing 形の leaving に変えます。
Using having left isn't necessarily wrong, but it's unnecessary.

To reduce this adverb clause of reason to an adverb phrase, we omit because and then use having plus the past participle of the main verb.
この理由の副詞節を副詞句に短縮するには、becauseを省略し、次にhavingに動詞の過去分詞を付けます。
Having studied.
学んでいたので。
Having studied is the same as because she had studied.
Having studiedは、彼女が学んでいたので、と同じ意味です。
B is grammatically correct while studying for French and Italian, but it expresses a time relationship.

Notice how this reduction from clause to phrase is possible because the subjects in the two clauses are the same.

The active sentence uses the simple past polished.
能動態の文では単純過去の polished を使っています。
So the passive sentence must use the simple past of be were.
ですから受動態の文では be動詞の単純過去 were を使わなければなりません。
We then use the past participle because the passive requires a form of be plus the past participle.
そして過去分詞を使います。受動態は be動詞の一形態＋過去分詞が必要だからです。
In this case, were polished.
この場合は were polished です。
Polished is the main verb.
Polished が主な動詞です。
Shine is not the main verb.
Shine は主な動詞ではありません。
Polish is the main verb.
