Hi everybody, welcome back to Ask Alicia, the weekly series where you ask me questions and I answer them.

Hi Kandan, Kandan asks, what are the differences between ask, ask to, ask for, and ask about?

Okay, this is a big question, so let's break this into parts.
これは大きな質問なので、部分ごとに分解して考えましょう。
On the most basic level, to ask means to request information.
最も基本的なレベルでは、askは情報を要求するという意味です。
Right?

You want to get information from somebody else.
他の誰かから情報を得たいのです。
We can also use it to get favors as well, like making requests for actions and so on.

So we're going to get into this.

But basically, to ask means you want to get something, information or action from someone or something else, right?

So with this in our mind, let's take a look at the other examples that you mentioned.
これを踏まえて、あなたが挙げた他の例を見てみましょう。
The first one, which I want to change, is ask to.
まず、変えたい最初のものがask toです。
So we do not use ask to.
ask toは使いません。
You need to use something after ask.
askの後には何かを置く必要があります。
We use to after ask when we use a person after the word ask.
askの後に人を置くときは、toを使います。
So for example, ask you to, or ask my mom to, ask my friend to, and we follow this with a verb.
例えば、ask you to、ask my mom to、ask my friend toなどで、その後に動詞を続けます。
We use this pattern when we want to ask someone to do an action for us, like I want to ask you to check my homework, or I asked my mom to move the car.

So we do this when we are asking someone.

So we want to get something from someone.

We are asking someone for an action.
誰かに行動を依頼しています。
So we cannot say ask to.
したがって、ask toとは言えません。
This is incorrect.

Remove that from your vocabulary.

Ask someone to is the correct way to use this.
ask someone toが正しい使い方です。
So ask someone to infinitive.
つまり、ask someone to 不定詞です。
Ask someone to move.
ask someone to move（誰かに動いてもらう）。
Ask someone to check.

Ask someone to go, and so on.

So this is how we use ask something to or ask someone to.

So let's continue to the second example you mentioned, ask for.

So we use ask for when we want to get something from someone else.
ask forは、他の誰かから何かを得たいときに使います。
So for example, you might ask for the menu at a restaurant, or you might ask for someone's agreement in a debate or discussion style situation.
例えば、レストランでメニューを頼んだり、議論やディスカッションの場で誰かの同意を求めたりすることがあります。
So when we ask for something, we want to get that thing.
何かを頼むとき、私たちはそのものを手に入れたいのです。
I asked for the menu.
私はメニューを頼みました。
I asked for help, and so on.

So as you can see from these examples, we follow ask for with a noun.
これらの例から分かるように、ask for の後には名詞が続きます。
So ask for means you want to get that thing.
つまり、ask for はそのものを手に入れたいという意味です。
So very different from ask someone to, right?
ask someone to とは全く違う、ですよね？

So with this in mind, let's go to the last.
では、これを踏まえて、最後のパターンに移りましょう。
one that you mentioned, which was ask about, we use this before a topic, a topic of conversation.
あなたが挙げた ask about ですが、これはトピック、つまり会話のテーマの前に使います。
For example, I want to ask about the meeting, or I want to ask about the contract, I want to ask about topic.
例えば、会議について聞きたい、契約について聞きたい、トピックについて聞きたい、といった使い方です。
So we use this when we want to begin a discussion about something, or maybe you want to do some kind of check-in at work or school.
何かについて話し合いを始めたいとき、あるいは職場や学校でちょっとした確認をしたいときに使います。
I want to ask about topic of conversation.
会話のトピックについて聞きたいです。
So when you use this ask about pattern, you're going to follow it with a noun phrase as your topic of discussion.
この ask about のパターンを使う場合、話し合いのトピックとして名詞句を続けます。
This might be a very long phrase, but it's a noun phrase.
とても長い句かもしれませんが、名詞句です。
So for example, I want to ask about the company's recent dress code policy changes.
例えば、会社の最近のドレスコードの変更について聞きたいです。
That's a noun phrase, right?
これは名詞句ですよね？
So you'll follow this with a topic, and the topic is a noun phrase, something for discussion.
つまり、トピックを続け、そのトピックは話し合いの対象となる名詞句です。
So to summarize, to ask the most basic form means to request something from someone that could be an action or an object.
まとめると、ask の最も基本的な形は、誰かに何かを求めることで、それは行動でも物でも構いません。
To ask someone to do something means to request an action from someone.
ask someone to do something は、誰かに行動を求めることです。
To ask for something means you want to receive a physical object, and to ask about something means you want to get information about a certain topic.
ask for something は、物を手に入れたいという意味で、ask about something は、特定のトピックについて情報を得たいという意味です。
You are looking to receive information about a certain topic.
特定のトピックについての情報を得ようとしています。
So this is a very quick breakdown of all the different ways that we can use ask.

Is the contracted form of and and?
and の短縮形は？
Um, interesting question.
うーん、面白い質問ですね。
So in written English, you put a here in your question a and apostrophe.
つまり、英語の書き言葉では、質問にあるように「a」の後にアポストロフィを付けます。
The answer to that is no.
その答えはノーです。
So we do not have an official like written contracted form of and.
つまり、「and」の公式な省略形の書き方は存在しません。
We don't say a and apostrophe or anything like that.
「aアポストロフィ」とか、そういう言い方はしません。
However, when we are speaking, it often sounds like we contract the word and, and it often in American English sounds like mmm, like we just drop the d, and sometimes it sounds like we drop the e at the beginning of and as well.
しかし、話し言葉では、しばしば「and」が縮約されたように聞こえます。アメリカ英語では、しばしば「m」のように聞こえます。つまり「d」を落とすだけで、時には「and」の最初の「e」も落として聞こえることがあります。
So for example, if you're at a restaurant and you hear somebody ordering very quickly, they might say, I'd like to get a cheeseburger and a milkshake.

So in that sentence, we didn't clearly say and a milkshake, right?

It sounds very stiff when we say it like this.
こう言うととても硬く聞こえます。
Instead, the speaker said, I'd like to get a cheeseburger and a milkshake.

In that sentence, it's mmm, a very very short mmm, the next to.
その文では、「m」、非常に短い「m」が「and a」の代わりにあります。
So no, we do not write mmm just the n when we are you know writing text messages to our friends or in emails to people.

But in speech, we do use this mmm a lot in place of and.

Of course, you can say and I'd like to get a cheeseburger and a milkshake, please.

That's also totally fine.

It's totally normal to use and.

But I will say that when we're speaking quickly, it tends to sound much more natural if we use this to connect words with and.

Officially, there's no contracted form like you mentioned a and apostrophe, but when we are speaking quickly, we often use instead of and.

Evgeny asked, What are the differences between spend money and waste money?

Okay, nice question.

Yeah.
ええ。
First, I want to look at waste money.
まず、waste moneyを見ましょう。
So waste is kind of the key word here.
つまり、wasteがここでのキーワードです。
When you think about the word waste, you might think about trash or garbage, right?
wasteという単語を考えると、ゴミやごみを連想するかもしれませんよね？
Like a garbage can or a waste basket, something like that, right?
ゴミ箱やごみかごのようなもの、そういうことですよね？
This is the image you can keep in your mind when you hear the expression waste money.
「無駄遣い」という表現を聞いたときに思い浮かべられるイメージがこれです。
It's like putting your money in the trash can or putting your money in the waste basket.
お金をゴミ箱に捨てたり、ごみ入れに捨てたりするようなものです。
So in other words, you use your money for something that is useless, or you use your money for something that you don't get anything from.
つまり、何の役にも立たないものにお金を使ったり、何も得られないものにお金を使ったりするということです。
So maybe you give somebody money for a business investment, but they just run away with your money.
例えば、誰かに事業投資のためにお金を渡したのに、その人がお金を持って逃げてしまった場合などです。
You could say, Oh, wow, I wasted my money, right?
「ああ、お金を無駄にした」と言うことができるでしょう。
So it's like you threw your money into the trash in that situation.
その状況では、お金をゴミに捨てたようなものです。
So we use waste money when we want to talk about something that we didn't receive any benefit from, right?
つまり、何の利益も得られなかったものについて話すときに「無駄遣い」という表現を使うのです。
So the idea of waste is the key here.
ここで重要なのは「無駄」という概念です。
To spend money, on the other hand, doesn't have this feeling of throwing money into the trash.
一方、「使う」という表現には、お金をゴミ箱に捨てるような感覚はありません。
We can spend money in many different ways.
お金の使い方はさまざまです。
It's like the most neutral way to talk about using your money for something.
お金を何かに使うという話をするとき、最も中立的な言い方です。
You can spend your money at a restaurant.
レストランでお金を使うことができます。
You can spend money on food.
食べ物にお金を使うことができます。
You can spend money on clothes, whatever.
服にお金を使うこともできますし、何にでも使えます。
Sometimes we spend our money on something, and then later we feel, Oh, actually, I wasted my money.
あるときにお金を使い、後になって「ああ、実はお金を無駄にした」と感じることがあります。
So sometimes our opinion of how we use our money can change after we use the money.
つまり、お金の使い方に対する考え方は、お金を使った後で変わることがあるのです。
As in my earlier example, if you think, Okay, I'm going to spend one thousand dollars on this investment.
先ほどの例で言えば、「よし、この投資に1000ドル使おう」と思うかもしれません。
I'm going to use one thousand dollars for this investment.
「この投資に1000ドル使おう」と。
I spent one thousand dollars this month on this investment, and then later you realize the person ran away with your money.
「今月はこの投資に1000ドル使った」と思っていたのに、後になってその人がお金を持って逃げたことに気づくのです。
You can then say, Oh, I wasted money on that investment.
そのとき「あの投資に無駄なお金を使った」と言うことができます。
So you might say spend at the beginning when you use your money, and you might change to waste afterwards.
つまり、お金を使うときには「使う」と言い、後になって「無駄遣い」に変わることがあるのです。
So this really depends on how you feel about the way you used your money maybe after you get the benefit or after something bad happens.
これは、お金を使った後、利益を得た後や何か悪いことが起きた後に、その使い方をどう感じるかによって本当に変わります。
Yeah.

So this is the key difference between waste money and spend money.
これが「無駄遣い」と「使う」の大きな違いです。
Spend money just means to use it in some kind of way.

To waste it means to throw it away, like in the garbage can.
