In a quiet country place, there lived a kind young man named Hans, and everyone knew that he had a very good heart.
Hans lived in a small cottage beside a beautiful garden, and his garden was the thing he loved most in the world.
In spring, his garden was full of flowers, with yellow roses, white lilies, purple violets, and bright red tulips growing everywhere.
In summer, the garden became even more beautiful because the warm sun helped every flower grow tall and strong.
Hans worked in his garden every day from early morning until evening, and he was always busy with his plants.
He watered the flowers, cut away old leaves, and carefully protected the small plants from insects and cold wind.
Hans did not have much money, but he was happy because his garden gave him everything he really needed.
During spring and summer, he sold flowers and fruit in the village, and this gave him enough money to buy simple food.
But when winter came, life became much harder for Hans because nothing grew in his garden.
The trees became empty, the flowers disappeared, and the ground became hard and cold under the winter sky.
During those cold months, Hans often had very little food, and sometimes he went to bed feeling hungry.
He had no money from his garden, so he slowly sold some of his belongings just to survive the long winter.
First, he sold a silver button, then an old chain, and later he even sold his favorite pipe.
Finally, Hans had to sell his wheelbarrow, which was very important for his work in the garden.
Still, Hans tried not to complain because he believed that spring would come again and life would become easier.
Hans also believed that he had a very good friend, a rich man called Hugh the Miller.
Hugh often told everyone that he was Hans's best friend and that true friendship was one of the greatest things in life.
Hugh was a rich man with a large house, plenty of food, many animals, and a big mill.
He had bags of flour, cows in the field, sheep on the hills, and enough food to last through every winter.
But during the cold months, Hugh never visited Hans, even though he knew that Hans was poor and often hungry.
Hugh said that visiting Hans in winter would not be good for him, because poor people should be left alone when they were unhappy.
Hugh believed that this was a very wise idea, and he often explained it to his wife and children.
His wife listened to him, and she often said that Hugh spoke beautifully about friendship.
Hugh liked hearing this, because he was very proud of his ideas, especially when people called him wise.
Meanwhile, Hans sat alone in his small cottage, waiting for winter to end.
Every morning, Hans looked at the garden, hoping to see the first sign of spring.
At last, the snow began to disappear, the air became warmer, and small green leaves appeared on the trees.
Soon, the first flowers opened, and Hans felt hope returning to his heart.
He went outside early every morning, working hard in the garden and preparing flowers to sell at the market.
When Hugh the Miller saw that spring had returned, he decided that now was the perfect time to visit Hans.
Hugh walked toward Hans's cottage, carrying a large empty basket on his arm.
Hans saw him coming, and he smiled widely, because he had truly missed his friend.
Hans called out that he was very happy to see Hugh again after such a long winter.
Hugh answered that true friends should never forget each other, and he asked Hans how he had lived through the winter.
Hans explained that the winter had been very difficult, but he was thankful that spring had finally arrived.
Hans told Hugh that he had sold several things during winter, including his wheelbarrow.
Hugh looked at him and said that selling the wheelbarrow had been a very foolish thing to do.
Hans replied that he had needed bread and firewood, and there had been no other way.
Hugh became quiet for a moment, and then he said that perhaps he could help Hans.
Hans immediately looked at him, because the word "help" sounded wonderful after such a difficult winter.
Hugh announced that he would give Hans his old wheelbarrow, because friendship required great generosity.
Hans felt very grateful, and he thanked Hugh again and again.
Hugh explained that the wheelbarrow was old, and one side was slightly broken, but that did not matter between true friends.
Hans said that he could easily repair it, and he was already imagining how useful the wheelbarrow would be in his garden.
Then Hugh looked around the garden and noticed that Hans had many beautiful flowers.
Hugh said that since he was giving Hans a wheelbarrow, Hans could fill his basket with flowers for him.
Hans looked at the large basket, and then looked at his flowers, because he had planned to sell them at the market.
Those flowers were important, because the money would help him buy back his things, especially his pipe and other belongings.
Hugh reminded him that he was giving him a wheelbarrow, and true friendship should never be selfish.
Hans immediately felt guilty, because he did not want Hugh to think that he was a bad friend.
Hans smiled and told Hugh that he could take as many flowers as he wanted.
Hugh filled the basket completely, taking almost all the flowers that Hans had prepared for the market.
Then Hugh walked home, carrying the flowers, while Hans returned to his garden.
Hans worked for the rest of the day, but he earned no money from those flowers.
Still, he thought about the wheelbarrow Hugh had promised, and this made him feel better.
The next morning, Hans woke up early, ready to work.
He began cutting branches, cleaning the garden, and preparing more flowers for the market.
After a short time, he heard Hugh's voice outside the cottage, calling his name loudly.
Hans walked toward the gate, and saw Hugh standing there with a large bag of flower.
Hugh told Hans that he needed him to carry the bag to the market, because he was very busy at the mill.
Hans explained that he had planned to work in his garden, because he needed to sell flowers that day.
Hugh looked disappointed, and reminded Hans that he was going to give him the wheelbarrow.
Hans immediately felt bad, because Hugh made the request sound like a test of friendship.
Hans said that of course he would help, because he did not want to disappoint such a good friend.
The bag of flour was very heavy, and the market was a long distance from Hans's cottage.
Hans carried the bag along the road, stopping several times because his arms and back began to hurt.
Still, he continued walking because he wanted to be a good friend.
Finally, Hans reached the market, sold the flour for Hugh, and carefully kept the money safe.
By the time he returned home, the sun was going down, and Hans felt completely tired.
He had lost another day of work, and he had sold none of his own flowers.
But Hans reminded himself that soon he would have the wheelbarrow, and that thought gave him some peace.
The next morning, before Hans had even finished breakfast, Hugh came to his cottage again.
Hugh thanked Hans for selling the flour and said that he had another small job for him.
Hans looked toward his garden, where many plants needed water, and he knew the day would be hot.
Hugh said that the roof of his barn needed some repairs, and he needed Hans to bring him a few pieces of wood.
Hans explained that he had only a small amount of wood left, and he planned to use it to repair the wheelbarrow.
Hugh said that this was perfect because his own wheelbarrow was missing one side, so Hans could use the wood for the barn instead.
Hans stopped for a moment because he did not understand how he could repair the wheelbarrow without wood.
Hugh quickly added that true friendship was based on sharing, and friends should never think only about themselves.
Hans again felt uncomfortable because he did not want to appear selfish.
So Hans carried the wood to Hugh's farm, even though he knew that now repairing the wheelbarrow would be much harder.
Hugh thanked him and told him that Hans was learning the true meaning of friendship.
Hans smiled, but deep inside he began to feel a little tired of hearing about friendship.
For the next several days, Hugh visited Hans again and again, and every visit brought another job.
One day, Hugh asked Hans to take his sheep up the hill because Hugh said he was too busy.
Another day, Hugh asked him to help move bags of flour, and Hans spent hours doing heavy work.
On another morning, Hugh asked Hans to watch his animals while Hugh rested comfortably at home.
Hans always agreed because he still believed that Hugh was his best friend.
But slowly, Hans's own garden began to suffer because he had less and less time to care for it.
Weeds began to grow between the flowers, several plants became dry, and some of the fruit was not collected in time.
Hans told himself that everything would become easier after Hugh finally gave him the wheelbarrow.
Every evening, Hans looked at the empty place where his old wheelbarrow used to stand and imagined the promised one there.
But Hugh never brought it, and Hans was too polite to ask directly.
Hugh continued telling everyone in the village that he was a wonderful friend to Hans and that generosity was very important.
Whenever people praised him, Hugh smiled because he enjoyed being seen as a good man.
Hans heard none of these conversations because he was usually working either in his garden or for Hugh.
Then one evening, dark clouds appeared over the hills, and a strong wind began to blow through the trees.
Hans looked at the sky and decided to stay inside because the weather was becoming dangerous.
Rain started falling heavily, hitting the windows, and the wind made the cottage walls shake.
In the middle of the storm, Hans heard a loud knock at his door.
He opened it and saw Hugh standing outside, holding a lantern and wearing a heavy coat.
Hugh told Hans that his young son had fallen from a ladder and he was afraid the boy was badly hurt.
Hans immediately asked what he could do because he truly cared about Hugh's family.
Hugh said that someone needed to go to the doctor who lived several miles away.
Hugh explained that he could not go himself because he needed to stay with his son.
Hans said that he would go even though the storm outside was becoming worse.
Hugh told him that he had always known Hans was a true friend.
Hans asked if he could borrow Hugh's lantern because the road would be almost completely dark.
Hugh looked at the lantern and said that it was a new lantern, and he did not want anything to happen to it.
Hans stared at him for a moment because the road was dangerous and the lantern would make the journey much safer.
Hugh said that he was sorry, but losing such a valuable lantern would be a great problem.
Hans did not argue because he did not want to upset his friend during such a difficult night.
So Hans stepped into the storm without a lantern and began walking toward the doctor's house.
The night was extremely dark, and the wind pushed against Hans with great force.
Rain hit his face; his clothes became completely wet, and the muddy road became difficult to see.
Hans continued moving forward because he kept thinking about Hugh's injured son.
Sometimes lightning filled the sky for a second, and Hans used the light to see where the road went.
Then the darkness returned, and Hans had to move very slowly.
After a long and difficult walk, Hans finally reached the doctor's house.
He knocked hard on the door, calling out that Hugh's son was hurt and that help was needed immediately.
The doctor quickly dressed, prepared his horse, and took his medical bag.
Hans explained where Hugh lived, and the doctor started riding toward the mill as fast as he could.
Hans then turned around and began the long journey back toward his own home.
The rain was still falling; the wind was even stronger, and Hans could hardly see the road.
He tried to remember every turn, but in the darkness, the path looked different.
Hans walked forward, believing he was following the correct road, but he had slowly moved away from it.
The ground became softer beneath his feet, and the darkness around him seemed deeper.
Hans stopped, listening carefully, but all he could hear was wind and rain.
He took another step, then another, trying to find his way back toward the road.
His foot slipped, and Hans fell forward into a deep hole filled with water.
Hans tried to stand, but the sides were muddy and steep, and he could not climb out.
He called for help again and again, but the storm carried his voice away.
Hans continued struggling, but his wet clothes felt heavy, and the cold water took away his strength.
After some time, his voice became quieter, and the cold night surrounded him in silence.
By morning, the storm had finally ended, and the first pale light appeared over the hills.
Villagers came outside, checking their homes and fields, and looking at the damage from the night.
Someone found Hans's footprints near the muddy road, and soon several people began searching for him.
After a long search, they found Hans in the water, and they immediately understood that he was dead.
The villagers carried him back to his cottage, and everyone who knew Hans felt very sad.
They remembered his kindness, his gentle smile, and how he had always tried to help other people.
A funeral was arranged, and many people from the village came to say goodbye.
Hugh the Miller came too, walking near the front, and he wore a very sad expression.
Hugh told the others that he should have the most important place at the funeral because he had been Hans's best friend.
The villagers allowed him to walk in front, and Hugh followed the group toward the churchyard.
After the funeral, several villagers gathered at a small inn where they spoke quietly about Hans.
One man said that Hans had been a very generous person, and that everyone would miss him.
Another man said that Hans had worked too hard and rarely thought about his own needs.
Then someone asked Hugh whether he felt terrible about losing such a close friend.
Hugh answered that Hans's death had created a very difficult situation for him.
The villagers looked at Hugh, waiting for him to explain what he meant.
Hugh said that he had promised Hans his old wheelbarrow, and now he did not know what to do with it.
He explained that the wheelbarrow was in such bad condition that nobody would probably want to buy it.
Hugh said that this showed why people should be careful about being too generous.
The villagers looked at each other because Hugh seemed more worried about the old wheelbarrow than about Hans.
Hugh continued talking, saying that people often suffered when they tried to help others too much.
No one answered him for a moment, and the room became very still.
Outside, the wind moved softly through the trees, and spring flowers grew beside the road where Hans had once walked.
In Hans's little garden, the flowers continued opening, bright and beautiful beneath the morning sun.
But the man who had cared for them, watered them, and loved them, was no longer there.
The roses still opened their petals, the lilies still moved in the breeze, and the birds still sang in the trees.
The garden remained beautiful, but without Hans, something important seemed to be missing.
Hugh returned to his large house, where warm food was waiting, and his own life continued almost exactly as before.
He sat near the fire, ate his dinner, and spoke again about the importance of true friendship.
He told his family that few people understood friendship as deeply as he did.
His wife listened, and once again she said that Hugh had a remarkable way with words.
Hugh smiled because praise always made him feel good, and he enjoyed hearing himself described as wise.
Far away, Hans's small cottage stood empty beside the garden he had worked so hard to create.
His tools remained where he had left them.
His chair stood near the window, and the room felt strangely still.
The old place seemed to wait for him, although Hans would never open the door again.
The villagers continued to remember him, not because he had been rich, but because he had been kind.
They remembered how Hans shared flowers with children, helped neighbors when he could, and greeted everyone with a friendly smile.
They remembered that Hans had very little, yet he often found something small that he could give.
Some people also remembered Hugh's long speeches, and now those beautiful words sounded very different.
Hugh had often spoken about sacrifice, but Hans had made the real sacrifices.
Hugh had often spoken about generosity, but Hans had been the one who actually gave.
Hugh had often spoken about friendship, but when Hans needed food, warmth, time, or safety, Hugh had offered very little.
The villagers did not say these things loudly because Hugh still believed that he had been an excellent friend.
Instead, they returned to their homes, carrying their own thoughts about Hans and Hugh with them.
Days passed.
The weather became warmer, and the countryside slowly turned bright green.
New flowers appeared in Hans's garden, although nobody had planted them that year.
Seeds from the previous summer had remained in the ground, waiting through the cold winter for the right time.
When the sun warmed the earth, those seeds began growing, just as Hans had once hoped they would.
Soon, small flowers covered parts of the garden, bringing color back to the empty place.
Children from the village sometimes stopped outside the gate, looking at the flowers and remembering Hans.
Some of them carefully watered the plants, because they knew how much Hans had loved his garden.
Others pulled out weeds or picked up broken branches, trying to keep the place beautiful.
Little by little, the garden became a place where people remembered kindness, work, and simple joy.
Hugh sometimes passed the cottage, but he rarely stopped, because he said the sight made him feel uncomfortable.
He told himself that this discomfort showed how deeply he had cared for Hans.
He never asked himself whether he had taken too much from Hans, or whether he had truly given anything.
Instead, Hugh continued living as before, confident in his own goodness and his own wisdom.
Years passed, and many things in the village slowly changed.
Children became adults, new families arrived, and old buildings were repaired or replaced with new ones.
But people still sometimes told the story of Hans, especially when someone spoke too proudly about being a good friend.
They remembered the young gardener who had believed every beautiful word he heard.
They remembered how easily Hans had confused obedience with kindness, and sacrifice with true friendship.
They remembered the empty basket, the heavy flower bag, the missing wood, and the promised wheelbarrow.
And most of all, they remembered the dark stormy night when Hans walked alone into the rain.
In the garden beside the empty cottage, flowers continued to grow each spring, bright beneath the open sky.
The roses returned, the lilies returned, and small violets appeared near the old stone path.
Birds built nests in the trees, bees moved among the flowers, and sunlight covered the garden with gold.
Hans was gone, but the kindness he had shown during his life remained in people's memories.
Hugh's speeches were also remembered, but not in the way Hugh would have wanted.
People remembered that beautiful words can sound good while hiding actions that are selfish and cold.
They remembered that calling someone a friend again and again does not make friendship true.
And whenever someone gave too much while another person only took, an older villager sometimes remembered poor Hans.
Then the story was told again, slowly and carefully, so that another person might understand what Hans had learned too late.
The little garden remained beside the road, peaceful and full of flowers, while seasons continued to come and go.
Spring followed winter, summer followed spring, and the years moved quietly forward.
Yet among the flowers, the memory of the devoted young gardener remained, simple, gentle, and strong.
And in that village, people never completely forgot the difference between someone who speaks about friendship and someone who truly lives it.
