Apple has finally unveiled their long-rumored smart home hub called the Home View.
It kind of looks like a 2002 iMac with a giant Apple Watch display, and at last, it's seeing the light of day.
Now that the AI-upgraded Siri is also out in beta, two years after Apple announced it and ran ads for it, and was forced by a class-action lawsuit to remove marketing language off of its website that made it sound like it could do stuff that it couldn't possibly do because it wasn't actually out yet.
But now it is, and it's a core part of what makes the Home View able to do all of the fancy stuff that we're going to talk about in this video.
Along with all the other stuff, Apple just announced a new Apple TV 4K, HomePod Mini 2, and smart home cameras and thermostats made in collaboration with LG and Artesol Schneider, just like we collaborated with our sponsor, Meter.
They want to help aspiring network builders and operators get their career going with their grant program.

The most interesting of the bunch is obviously the Home View.
Now, this tablet hub thing is 300 bucks and can either be bought as an all-in-one unit with a speaker base or wall-mounted for an extra 50 to 130 bucks, depending on how cleanly you want to hide the wire.
It has a 7-inch square screen, so it's going to be a lot smaller than you think and a bit of a design departure from existing units from Amazon and Google, suggesting that it's not really for watching video.
Interestingly, Apple has chosen not to give the operating system its own special name like TVOS or WatchOS.
The Home View is running Home View software, which appears similar to iOS but runs fewer apps and is clearly geared more towards being a communal interface for a family to check their calendar, FaceTime grandparents, control smart home stuff, and rely.
on Siri AI to do even more, which we'll get into later.
Back to the apps, though.
Right now, it seems to only support like four iPhone apps: Apple TV, news, audiobooks, and Apple Music Classical.
For some reason, I assume more will come from third-party devs like Netflix and Spotify pretty soon.
That said, just to clarify, the Home View will support a bunch more third-party apps, but you're not installing the apps to the device.
It's using a system sort of like CarPlay, where it will display an app when it's opened on a connected device.
Okay.
The Home View does have Safari, so people should be able to access most of what they want from a device like this.
It's also not coming out until November 13th, so there's a month for developers to port their existing apps over to the new platform, or at the very least, make their iOS apps compatible.
One of the cooler features of the Home View is something we've been asking Apple about for years on the iPad: multi-user support.
It can recognize the face and voice of each family member.
only show that person's calendar, iMessages, music library, and so on.
It won't swivel on its own to follow you around the room, which honestly I feel like is a pro, not a con.
And whenever someone else in the house tries to use your apps, the device will recognize it ain't you and hide your stuff, which is cool.
But it also assumes each person won't be using their iPhones for that stuff.
While we're talking about iPhones, it should be noted that you need an iPhone 17 series or newer to take advantage of these Siri AI personal context skills on the home view.
What you won't be using an iPhone for is a new Siri feature where the smart assistant will walk you through recipes that you found online.
When you ask for one, Siri on home view appears to find the recipe and then break it down into a few steps to make it easy to follow without scrolling past the author's life story first.
It's part of the fun.
This is something we've seen from Amazon for years now, and weirdly, Google's Nest Hub devices used to do this as well before Google released the Gemini update, which trashed the feature in favor of giving you some much more helpful AI word vomit.
Thank you.
One thing that we did notice when researching how Alexa handles recipes is that on the Echo Show, you were going to see ads, which, as far as I can tell, isn't something you'll have to contend with on the Home View, and might be enough to make more people switch over to Apple's Smart Home.
If they do, the Home View does have a Thread border router and Matter controller, so it should still work with and control all of the usual smart home devices that you've acquired over the past few years.
Imagine all these manufacturers working together.
It's beautiful.
Now, all of that, unsurprisingly, looks super slick in Apple's trademark witty commercial for the Home View, and it should be a solid smart home centerpiece if people use it like the family in the commercial.
The question is.
Will they?
As much as I love the idea of people using their phones less, especially when they're all in the kitchen with the prime opportunity to socially interact with each other, I have a feeling that most people are more likely to use the iPhone that's presumably in their pocket instead of a mini square tablet tethered to the table or wall and shared with the entire family.
And this thing is going to become a glorified speaker slash smart picture frame.
If less time spent hunched over a little screen is Apple's or anyone's goal, I feel like a better form factor might be something like a full wall calendar-sized display.
The Home View also has a couple of quirks.
Home View
We noticed that this thing doesn't seem to have a power button, so I guess the only way to hard reset it will be to unplug it and plug it back in.
The other major quirk is that since it relies so heavily on Siri AI, it won't be available in the EU at launch.
Apple said that it's working constructively with the EU to attempt to find.
a path forward, but that's all we know for now.
I need to figure out a John Turner's impression.
It's not there yet.
That wasn't it, to be clear.
To complement the home view, Apple also partnered with LG and Schneider Electric to reveal a handful of smart home accessories like locks, doorbells, cameras, and thermostats.
Now these are really expensive, but since they're made in collaboration with Apple, they are easy to set up and live exclusively within Apple Home without the need for a third-party app.
Is this worth the added cost?
Probably not, but it's less bloatware on my phone at the end of the day.
I also want to mention the LG indoor cam has a cool little feature where it tilts up to monitor the home when everyone leaves and tilts down to give you a bit more privacy when anyone comes home.
And I mean, maybe a potential hacker could tilt it up again, but but the fact that the feature is there at all is a little Apple touch that I appreciate.
Another smart home piece to complement Siri AI is the new HomePod Mini 2.
This device can similarly use Siri AI to pull context about your life if it's paired with a modern iPhone or iPad that supports Siri AI as well.
The new miniature HomePod is also getting an update to the screen on top, which will now have a very abstract music visualizer glowing with the same colors as the album art of the song you're playing.
Why?
Because it's kind of cool, and Apple thinks about these things.
I don't.
I think I like Apple now.
I don't know.
The hidden feature of the Mini Two is that you can pair up to four of them, or two Minis and two regular second-gen HomePods, to get true surround sound audio from the new fourth-gen Apple TV 4K.
That was also announced.
Sadly, the new TV box got a $100 price increase, but the new model should be better at AV1 decoding and offers fast performance now that it's running an A19 chip, like the iPhone 17 series.
So the Apple TV 4K is now 300 bucks, but it's got a better chip than the MacBook Air.
The new Apple TV will also let you ask Siri about the shows you're watching.
Apple's fine print here says that some of these features are going to be available on the previous second and third gen Apple TV 4K units as well.
However, if you have the newest unit, there are now three far-field mics on the TV box itself, which will allow it to use voice controls without holding the remote up like a microphone.
Speaking of the remote, you'll also be able to make it chirp, so you can find it easier when it's inevitably lost under the couch.
If this happens to you a lot, you can also just order a remote and pair it to an existing Apple TV, and build a pile of remotes in the recesses of your couch.
And that's pretty much it.
The new HomePod Mini comes out on October 30th.
The Home View and new Apple TV are coming on November 13th, and the smart home accessories are coming later in December.
So maybe if you're good, you'll get a $400 floodlight camera under the tree.
What a great present!

Honestly, Apple's secret weapon in this whole race might be the personal context Siri can draw on.
