In the '70s, we were all wannabes.
We did the grunt work for the mob bosses, or the upper echelon mob guys.
And those mobs had power in those days.
If they gave you an assignment, you couldn't refuse, and you had to do it.
Francis Lewis Bullock walk into the bank, real quiet.
On the floor!
I run into the bank and vault right over the top of the counter and yell back up, and all the tellers back up, and I go into each drawer and start scooping the money out.
My favorite trademark was to carry a bag with me.
I'd have two bags in my pockets, and they would be little plastic bags, and it said, "I love New York." I noticed every head teller would have a keychain with keys.
I said to the head teller, "Let's go into the vault right now, go." And she hesitated.
She began to urinate on the floor.
Right in front of me.
I kind of felt bad, but I made her do that.
But I don't have time for this.
To the vault.
She went to the vault.
She opened up the door.

We got into the car.
We got back to the safe house, and we dumped all the money on the bed.
That was like one of the fun moments—dumping the money on the bed.
I always robbed the banks with the same bag.
I loved the York bag.
Eventually, when I got busted, they had reports, and they said we know how many banks you did.
You always carried that little white bag, you know.
It was a trademark of a criminal.
You just couldn't get away from it, you know.
It's 1978, and the United States government is at war with a hidden empire.
Mob warfare is on the rise all across the streets of New York City.
In Brooklyn, a low-level mobster is shot dead in broad daylight.
A network of gangsters who live by a code of crime, violence, and power.
In the middle of this struggle is one man, Joe Pistone, trying to climb the ladder and survive in the American mob, and an undercover FBI agent.
He and his compatriots on both sides of the law are witnesses to this secret history, stepping forward now to tell their stories firsthand.
A few stay in the shadows for personal safety, fearing a criminal organization that reigned unchallenged in the United States until recent times.
And in the 1970s, they were untouchable.
What was the New York mob like back then?
Back then, it was a very close society.
Organized crime knew what.
Police could or couldn't do most, not all.
Most of the wise guys get law enforcement.
They get what we're supposed to do.
They respect us.
They don't like us, but they respect us.
Joe Pistone is one of a new generation of agents fighting the American mob across the country.
But Pistone is about to go deep inside the American mob than any FBI agent before him.
How did you get into this job?
I always wanted to be a cop.
I always wanted to be a police officer.
Really?
I figured if I'm going to be a law enforcement, I might as well be with the best.
I applied to the bureau, to the FBI.
Got appointed as a special agent in 1969.
Pistone and fellow agents like Steve Samieri were the FBI's secret weapons in the 1970s.
We all basically inner city kids, and we basically made a career being the nines from inner city.
Even though hung out on the corner with the mob guys growing up, it all went back to your upbringing.
I can always remember my dad, you know, saying, "You never take another man's money.
You always be fair." And it's always stuck with me.
And I think that's why, you know, seeing these guys, seeing the flash and the cash, you're impressed.
But it wasn't like, geez, I want to be like that.
Pistone and Samieri joined the FBI at a low point in the battle with the mob.
Agents had a hard time infiltrating mafia neighborhoods.
Viewing and watching FBI agents on the street, they all dressed the same.
Everybody had the same hat, the same suit.
It was easy to spot that organized crime knew what police could or couldn't do.
And different agencies—they knew like the FBI wasn't working undercover.
And back then, it was a very closed society.
They could have worn a dress plate or a sign that said FBI agent and given their name.
It was so simple to make them.
So the FBI changed strategy, sending in the neighborhood guys without a rule book.
When I first started doing undercover FBI, there was no training.
It basically was guys that were street guys before they came into the bureau.
We really had guidelines.
We had no training, and other than we we knew what was right and what was wrong.
Street guys like Pistone and Samieri knew that to be credible in the mob, you had to have a specialty.
We and I was sent to jewelry school.
We took the same course together, and I learned all about diamonds, precious gems.
But the newly minted jeweler now needs a solid cover.
When you're going into undercover, you need to have an identity.
Back then, you pick a name.
The government was able to provide you with a birth certificate, took a driving test like anybody else.
And got a driver's license and named Danny Brasco.
He knows how they operate, and he knows what the dangers are.
With Pistone's alias established, Operation Danny Brasco slowly begins.
When I first hit the streets in the operation, we had restaurants and bars picked out that where I would go and get my face seen and hopefully get into conversations with people.
For probably six months, not having any illegal conversations with anybody, the Bureau spent a lot of time and gave him time to actually infiltrate, which was was the key because they were so used to something fast.
To build your persona, your best bet is being yourself.
You have to, you know, convince these guys that that you are who you say you are.
After about six months, I'm in there one night.
This young lady gets up, goes to the ladies' room on her way back to the ladies' room.
She says hello, and I say hello.
The bartender catches this.
I call the bartender over, and I said I want to go on record.
What's a mob term?
I want to go on record.
I did not initiate conversation with that young lady.
There was three basic reasons to get killed in the mafia: is either a) you are an informant, b) you disobeyed your boss, or the third possibility was that you slept with a maid member's wife or daughter.
That would get you killed for sure.
He just nods his head.
If you want to talk to her, talk to her.
Her friend went bye bye.
Well, he didn't go to Disneyland.
That meant, you know, but now the guy knows that I'm a street guy.
His credibility is established.
All Pistone needed was the right invitation, and he got one from the bartender when he asked him if he likes to gamble.
I said after I close up, he said you want to come out.
He said I'm going to a couple after-hours joints.
So I said, yeah.
It's a gambling joint run by all the families.
The bartender introduced me to different mob guys from different families.
It's the breakthrough Pistone's been waiting for—a chance to get right into the gambling dens of Cosa Nostra, where no FBI agent had ever penetrated before.
The operation was so secret most in the FBI didn't even know it was happening.
Very few agents knew what he was doing.
He answered only one or two guys, and that was it.
I mean, I had to be informed, and the people that were covering had to be informed, but it certainly wasn't known all of in the FBI office.
You have to know who you're infiltrating.
You have to wait for the right, you know, the right moment.
Joe Pistone starts at the bottom rung.
In the mob, everybody starts out as an associate.
Now, an associate is a crook, a guy that has the ability to make money.
And how do you do that?
By showing that you have the ability to be a owner.
Traditionally, to get involved in the mafia, you you would be an associate first.
You'd be a made guy with you.
In the beginning, maybe you're a golfer, maybe you're running errands, maybe you're picking up some money, taking money here to there, maybe you're collecting sports bets.
We did the grunt work for the mob bosses or the upper echelon mob guys.
If they gave you the assignment, you couldn't refuse and you had to do it.
You could tell by being around the guys who had, you know, for lack of a better word, were intelligent.
Another word is some guys were there to do the work, the kind of thug guys.
Another guys were more looked up to to, you know, bring the family forward.
My background helped a lot because I know you don't walk into a place that you know is mob guys and you walk up to the mob guy and say, "Hey, I'm Donny Brascio, I'm a jewel thief.
I want to, you know, I want to start running with you guys." It's like doesn't happen.
And you got to remember, the god of organized crime was money.
It's got a lot to do with that.
And if you had something that they were interested in, that could use you.
That's what it is.
What are they looking for?
Now, you furnish it.
We figured that being a jewel thief was a good because you you could do it alone.
So I got a pack of diamonds, and I put the envelope on the bar and I said, "Charlie, I need extra money for this package.
I don't tell him what's in it.
He takes it.
A couple weeks go by, one night I come in, and then he says, 'Somebody left this envelope for you.' So I said, 'Okay, put in my pocket.' We go out, get back, and what I asked for is in there.
So now the guy knows that, you know, I'm a little shady.
But the deeper this went, the more dangerous the operation got, especially when he wore a wire.
There were times when we felt that we had to have close protection for him.
We dedicated one particular surveillance team that became very familiar with Joe, and they developed all kinds of signals and motor sirens.
Then one day, Donny Brascio got his first bite from a Columbo hijacker named Jilly.
He had a club up in Brooklyn.
So I go up there and I start hanging out with Jilly.
When you're with a particular mafia crew, they go to their social club every day and you hang out with your crew.
Every day he walks the line fraught with danger.
You're playing cards.
They're talking about if they got a book making an operation going.
They're talking about if they got a a club, a bar, a go-go joint, all their illegal activities that that they have going on.
They're talking about how can we make a bigger score.
When I was with Jilly in the in the Columbo's, he would cook, you know, lunch.
You had pasta, meatballs, sausage, and you know, you might have a little glass of red wine.
Be a good investigator, be a good agent.
That's one of the things of street smart.
You have to be convincing.
He's got to be able to carry out the acts that they want him.
The proof that he's a loyal, dedicated member, and that he'll do what he's told.
Because one mistake, the slightest error, mob guys suspect that you're an undercover agent, or you might be an informer.
You're through.
They never hesitate to kill.
Not everyone in Jilly's crew liked or trusted the newcomer Donny Brosco.
And here's a time to becoming a suspect within the Columbo family hit a roadblock.
I got into a beef with two of these guys.
Franky and Patsy, they came out of the can.
They wanted to start making money.
Being that I was a a jewel thief, they wanted some information on on different things.
They come up with some crazy schemes to rob places.
I tell them, look, you got an alarm system in this place that you know you can't defeat, or how do you expect to crack that safe?
I'm being negative.
I'm telling no.
You can't do it like that.
You can't do it this.
And this kind of ticked them off.
Patsy was a made guy, and Franky was.
Patsy puts a gun on the table, and basically what he says me said Donny, if you don't convince me, you're as good as these guys say you are.
The only way you're going out of here is rolled up in that rug.
You're Joe Pistone, and you're wise enough to know that on any moment, any mistake, the slightest error, could be a death sentence for you.
He said, Donny, tell us where you were before New York.
Tell us who you robbed with down in Miami.
These guys you're dealing with are stone cold killers, and they don't want to take any chance.
As a street guy, you don't give up other guys that you did supposedly did scores with.
You try to turn the conversation around.
How do I know that you didn't become an informant in jail?
A lot of dope.
Finally, after about five hours, it's all over.
As a street guy, if I go to shake his hand and say, "Look, you know, I understand that you know you had a concern, but let's forget about it.
That's a red flag and somebody's mine." Because why isn't Donny mad?
We just basically called him out.
The only thing he understands in this situation is force.
I turn around and I hit Frankie.
Why?
He's done it, mate guy.
I can't hit Patsy.
Now Patsy's punching hell out of me, but I can't do anything.
You lay your hands on a mate guy, that's causing you killed.
Pistone survives the sit down and successfully proves himself to the Columbo family.
For the first time, an FBI agent has been fully accepted into the world of the American mob.
Pistone's case was a big, big breakthrough because it filled in a lot of the blanks, identified a lot of the people.
That's absolutely vital to any kind of successful effort to deal with any kind of organized criminal enterprise.
But it's only the beginning of this extraordinary effort by Joe Pistone to get inside the American mob.
Eventually, Pistone leaves the Columbo family, looking for a deeper way in.
And now he's got a shot at infiltrating another of the five New York families, the Bonanos.
The Bonano family controlled gambling and loan-sharking back in the day, but those those days were over.
They had to find other ways of making money.
The Bonano family can be fairly characterized as groundbreakers when it came to drug trafficking.
They were small drugz, rob drug dealers.
They were wild guys.
The Bonanos were really at this period of time the worst.
Now, for the first time in history, the FBI has a shot at taking down an entire family.
Joe Pistone was recruited by the FBI to get into the Bonano family, which he did by going through a guy named Lefty Gunther Jr.
Lefty was a 24/7 gangster.
He grew up in the life.
He had relatives that were in the life.
He was a tough guy to be around.
After a while, Lefty really becomes comfortable with me, and he'd be telling me about who's the boss of this family, the boss of that family.
I'm gathering great intelligence information.
He's like an encyclopedia of mob.
One force must work.
Requires infiltration.
You cannot do all of it through wiretaps.
You can't do all of it through through telephone intercepts.
You can't do all of it through bugs because you don't know what to wiretap.
It's a real goldmine for the FBI.
Now they have an agent who is really in the middle of a mafia family.
Soon, Pistone, under the alias Donnie Brasco, and Ruggero hatch a scheme together.
Lefty always said he was interested in expanding out of New York.
Fortunately, the FBI already had a great front—an undercover operation in a Florida nightclub called the King's Court.
So we got a club going in Florida, and because he knew that I was a kind of guy that could be trusted, he put me in charge in there.
Another FBI agent, Steve Celli, was already working undercover in the club.
The club was set up because this was a venue they could have, because see that the money could be made.
So Joe came down, and you know, it really sort of played him with the Bananos family.
That nightclub becomes the bait that leads Lefty and the Bananos into a trap.
Our operation was confined to a very limited number of individuals, so agents would be taking photographs, they'd taking pictures of it, you know, surveillance, and among a lot of the surveillances, and the agents didn't know Donnie Brasco was really an FBI agent.
Operation Donnie Brasco is garnering results in Florida, but back in New York, a mafia power struggle is about to change the game dramatically for Joe Pistone.
The problem: an ambitious Banano boss named Carmine Galante.
Galante looks more like a grandfather than a godfather.
As he walks his dog each morning in Greenwich Village, but his real interest is gambling, prostitution, loan sharking, and most of all heroin and other drugs.
Carmine Galante, who got out of prison after a long prison sentence for narcotics trafficking, tried to muscle in and take control of the Banano crime family.
He controlled all the importation of drugs into the U.S.
And Galante would share any of this with any of the other families.
Sharing was a golden rule among mafia families, and bosses who didn't share got into trouble with the Commission, the governing board of the mafia, which held the power of life and death over all mafiosos, including upstart bosses.
So the other families got together, and they decided he's got to go.
He's got to go.
Carmine Galante—he's a regular patron at a restaurant in Brooklyn called John Mayer's Restaurant, and he goes sit out in the patio in the back with his buddies.
It was August, hot summer day.
He's sitting there, it's time for a posse with his friends to hold a conversation.
Car pulls up in front of the restaurant, and there are four people in the car.
One is the driver who stays with the car.
The other three go through the restaurant.
They know exactly where Galante is going to be.
He's sitting there.
What's this going on?
They walk in the patio.
They blow him over the chair into the tomato patch.
Galante was having lunch in the courtyard of an Italian restaurant in Brooklyn when five men armed with automatic rifles and shotguns opened fire.
Did your uncle say who he was going to lunch with today?
No, no, it's not every day for coffee.
It's not the year.
Even on Mondays.
When I get there, the bite is still there because I get there pretty quick.
And there's one laying in the tomato patch with a cigar in his mouth and a zipper lighter in his hand.
I look at it, smile, Galante.
It was a iconic picture because one all over the world.
My friends in Washington said Joe Coffey put that cigar in his mouth because, you know, I had a sense of humor.
So he, and of course, I didn't do it, but I let him put it in.
Down in Florida, Joe Pistone gets a call from New York.
I was in Florida looking out after the the club down there, and I called Lefty because I had to call him every day.
He says, "Have you seen the New York papers?
" I said, "I haven't seen him yet." He said, "Well, go buy the New York papers.
They call me back.
I buy the New York paper, and there's there's the picture.
I knew from Lefty that Galante didn't have a lot of admirers, but I never had any indication that that they were going to kill him.
So I call him back, and I said, "I got the paper." He said, "You read it?
" I said, "Yeah." He said, "Well, things are going to change.
They killed Galante.
I want you to come back to New York." Galante's execution shakes up the Bonanno family.

In a hard case named Sunny Black becomes a captain.
Lefty gets reassigned to work under Sunny Black.
In a long-forgotten, it's Joe Pistone.
Pistone, he's got he's more than just a wannabe.
He's got Lefty Ruggiero on his side, who's bringing him into me capos like Sunny Black and Palutano.
Sunny Black was a tough guy, but you could joke with him.
Plus, he wanted to keep earning money, and the undercover operation we had in Florida made a lot of money.
Pistone now gets close to Sunny Black, whose fortunes in the Bonanno family are rising, thanks in part to the Florida club.
He's inside capos' council.
Capo is talking to him, dealing with him, telling him secrets.
He's at third base.
I like Sunny Black.
I mean, how could you have comfortable conversation with him?
If you really don't like him, you know, I just spend a lot of time with him, and I used to sleep in his apartment.
I remember telling this story to my FBI superiors, and they couldn't believe it.
I mean, you know, he slept in the bedroom; I slept on his couch.
We get up in the morning, and we sit around in our underwear.
And here's me, an undercover FBI agent, and one of the most powerful captains of the Bonanno family, sitting there drinking coffee, having a hard roll with butter, and watching cartoons on television.
You never see that in the movies.
After the execution of Carmine Galante, three capos of the Bonanno family tried to muscle in and take control over the family, and it's open warfare.
They're looking to kill each other.
Three captains wanted to take over the family: Sonny Red and Delicato, Phil Lucky Giacomo, and Dominic Trinchiere.
Sonny Black and Joey Messina call a sit down to iron out the differences, but there is no ironing out these differences.
It's all about power.
What was supposed to be a sit down was a trap, an ambush.
Joey Messina was there.
He tackles Sonny Red and Delicato, shoots him in the head.
The other two capos were also killed.
The three renegade capos are dead, but there is a loose end.
Sonny's crew killed Sonny Red, and that pissed people.
So they were looking to kill each other, and Joe's in the middle.
What follows is a conversation that no FBI agent has ever had before.
Proof positive that Joe Pistone has pulled off one of the greatest deceptions in law enforcement history.
Sonny Black invites him to join the club.
Sonny tells me, you know, I already proposed you for membership in the family.
You're going to get made in December.
He tells me, you know, we took care of those guys.
He said one got away.
I said who?
He says Bruno Delicato.
He says I'm giving you the contract to get Bruno Delicato.
Now, as an FBI agent, you can't get involved in acts of violence unless you're protecting yourself or protecting a citizen.
And one of the rules in the Mafia is that when you get a contract, if you turn it down, you're going to get killed.
So when I was told you got the contract to kill Bruno and Delicato, I said okay, Sonny.
Where do they is?
hunt is on for Bruno Delicato.
If Pistone finds and kills him, he'll become a made man, earning his place in the Bonanno family with blood.
To an undercover FBI agent, it's a moral dilemma.
But in other parts of the U.S., mob wannabes don't think twice about what it takes to become a made man.
In Philadelphia, home to the most violent crime family in the history of the mob, La Cosa Nostra exerted their power through regional bosses like Filzetta and his henchman, Nicky Scarfo.
If we have a problem with someone, we don't call the police.
We take care of ourselves.
And Scarfo groomed his nephew, Phil Leonetti, for years toward his one true goal: becoming a made man in his crime family.
My uncle Scarfo always told me that to get involved with La Cosa Nostra, you gotta commit a murder.
And with him, he wanted me to kill two people.
Because he wanted me to have a reputation as a killer, like he did.
We killed no legitimate people, no nice people.
All the guys I killed were guys like myself.
Everybody was a bad guy.
I mean, this was our life in La Cosa Nostra.
But Leonetti is Nicky Scarfo's nephew, which means the bar to becoming a made man was higher and bloodier.
He must kill again, and the target this time was Vincent Falcone, his partner in crime on another murder.
In the case of Vincent Falcone, yeah, he deserved to get killed.
He was talking about my uncle, saying crazy things about him, and my uncle went completely berserk and decided to kill him.
So we made believe we were going to have a party at this house of Margie.
He was getting a little suspicious, so I tried to break the ice a little bit by telling him, "Go make some drinks, get the scotch.
You know, have a few drinks and all." Pull the gun out that I had in my waist, and shot him behind the head.
He fell down, and my uncle checked out Vincent's body, listened to his heart.
He says, "Give him another shot.
Shoot him again in his heart." Scarfo looks into the face of the corpse of Vincent Falcone and says, "I love this.
I absolutely love this.
He loved murder.
He loved killing people.
He always says you gotta kill and you gotta keep on killing." uncle just kept saying, "I love this so much." The big shots dead, and he drank so much scotch that he got drunk.
He was falling down drunk.
That's how happy he was.
This is the first time and only time that he hugged me and kissed me and told me he loved me.
And then he said, "This was big.
It's on record now that we did something for the family, and I'm a proposed member, so I'm on my way to be made." But for Joe Pistone, undercover in New York's Bonanno crime family, the choice to kill is not his own.
The FBI makes a tough decision.
Joe was not allowed to become a member of a cousin of the Bureau.
The side that would not be the best interest of him or the Bureau, and so we pulled him out of there.
After six long years undercover, the Feds pulled Pistone from the streets and shut her.
Operation Donnie Brasco.
Now it's time to let the mob know the truth.
When the operation was going to be closed down, we had a meeting with three agents and one of them knew Sonny Black.
So what I did was I took a picture with these guys with my credentials, and the agents went to Sonny Black, and they showed him a photograph of myself and the guys, and they said, "You know, Sonny, we just want you to know that this guy you know is Donnie Brasco is really special agent Joseph Pistone of the FBI.
He's been working undercover for six years." What Sonny said was, "Well, I don't know if I see him, I'll know." And that was it.
Then they told him that Sonny, once this comes out, you're better off coming with us, because you know you're going to get killed.
And he just told them, "Look, I don't believe it," and he just shrugged it off.
And that was it.
And they left, and he calls Lefty, calls the other guys in the crew to go to the motion lounge, and he tells them what happened.
In the beginning, Lefty couldn't believe it either.
Lefty couldn't believe that I was undercover agent.
When he found out, I can't say here on camera what his response was.
It wasn't good.
It wasn't good.
Words spread in the streets.
Bonanno associate Donnie Brasco is actually a federal agent.
And then what happened once they found that it was me?
The commission got together, and the commission put a five hundred thousand dollar contract out on me.
Pistone got out of New York fast, hiding out in FBI headquarters in Washington D.C.
But within the mob, those responsible for Donnie Brasco's rise paid the price.
Sonny had to fess up to all the bosses.
What?
何？
What had happened?
So he gets a call to go to sit down.
He walks into the motion lounge and tells the bartender, "I just got called to sit down." And he gives him his ring, gives him his money, gives him his keys, except his car keys.
And he calls his girlfriend.
And says, "They tell me that Donnie was another cover agent.
I didn't believe it.
Now I believe it.
If you ever see Donnie, tell him I'm glad it was him." So he goes to sit down, and the next thing they know, Sonny Black is gone.
A year later, law enforcement made a gruesome discovery.
They found Sonny's body in '82 in a body bag with his hands cut off.
And the reason that they did that was he introduced me to bosses that I shook hands with.
Did I want to see him die?
No.
いや。
I mean, look, you know, that's not my job.
My job is to gather evidence and put you in jail.
Left, he spends his 15, 18 years in a can.

The stone did the number on the Bonanno family, but the family survived.
By 1993, Joe Massino was boss of the Bonannos, an old-school godfather who still believed in the Mafia's code of silence and secrecy.
He was also an innovator when it came to earning, seizing new opportunities where he could find them.
The big, big money that the Mafia was making through labor racketeering was really just not available anymore, and they began to move towards Wall Street.
In the '90s, it was certainly a bull market.
There were tons of new companies.
The internet was sort of new and burgeoning at the time, and certainly there was a lot of easy money to be made.
You can rest assured that the mob's going to be there to make it.
Legitimate stockbrokers must follow the rules of the Securities and Exchange Commission, but not Joe Massino and the Bonanno family.
Fraud is the key to their success.
The underbelly of Wall Street is where the mob operates.
That's where the boiler rooms come in.
These boiler rooms are filled with very young kids, unsophisticated kids, who have one task: that is to sell stock and to say whatever they need to say, follow whatever script they have in front of them to make sure they accomplish that task.
Most of the boiler rooms looked like New Year's Eve party had been thrown the night before, often scantily clad women walking around, stacks of papers, cigarettes, alcohol.
Looks nothing like you'd imagine that a brokerage house looks like.
The game was called pump and dump.
It worked like this: mobbed traders acquire large blocks of stocks worth five dollars or less.
By controlling supply, they increase demand, artificially inflating the stock's price.
Then they sell those stocks to unsuspecting investors for much more than the original value, in turn earning enormous profit.
They target the elderly.
They target people in the Midwest who aren't necessarily in tune to some of the things that are going on.
The mob make sure that things stay in order, and if they don't successfully do their job, they're going to get beaten.

They make sure that those boiler room kids keep that stock put away.
They sell it and they don't let it get sold back to them.
It's paid in cash and it's undisclosed.
There's no paper trail.
Nobody knows about it.
You get a bag of cash on Friday.
The cash is divvied up.
Some going into the brokers' pockets.
The rest going to the bosses.
All the money flows up somehow.
Every single boss, underboss, capo has money kicked up.
Raking in the cash for Joe Massino of the Bonanno family is this guy Robert Lino.
Lino was the muscle at the higher level.
He was the capo.
He was the one who represented him in sit downs.
He was the one who essentially ran a investment firm in Lower Manhattan called DMN Capital, which was under the auspices of the Bonanno family.
To rat out the Bonanno family's corruption on Wall Street, agent Kevin Barrows needs to get inside DMN Capital.
It was too risky in this day and age to have an agent trying to go undercover.
You had to know somebody.
It wasn't the days of, you know, Joe Pistone, where it was somewhat easier to infiltrate.
My partner and I began to really develop a lot of cooperating witnesses, but not just any cooperating witness.
His informant works as a mole inside the mob's boiler rooms.
With his help, Operation UpTick is born.
The goal of an informant is always to get the next person up in the chain.
As we say, you've got to eat your way up the chain and get to the top.
The Feds want Bonanno boss Joe Massino, but before they reach the top of that food chain, FBI agents must net a smaller fish and catch Bonanno capo Robert Lino on tape first.
So they send their DMN informant to work wearing a wire, and the stakes couldn't be higher.
If discovered, they'd almost certainly be killed.
You better get my money.
I better have it.
I have to put the word out to everybody.
Everybody, you understand me?
You better get my money.
There were times when we had the wire up and ready to go, and found out somebody was coming, we take the wire off seconds before we walk in.
Simply because Robert Lino was a very tough, very violent guy, but my partner and I were extraordinarily successful at getting people to cooperate, and we just kept getting more and more cooperators, who gave us more and more information about more and more people, who which led to more and more names.
Operation UpTick grows, putting increasing numbers of mobsters in the FBI's crosshairs, including Robert Lino.
And the largest federal arrest operation ever in the New York City metropolitan area, more than 600 FBI agents began arresting 120 defendants as a result of a 10-month investigation codenamed UpTick.
It really awakened the public and awakened regulators.
But Joe Massino knew how to play the system like an old school boss, and his anti-surveillance techniques paid off.
He's never caught on tape and gets away clean in Operation UpTick.
In the 1980s and 90s, New York mob families were scrambling to keep hold of power while under siege by the authorities.
But in Providence, Rhode Island, the Patriarchal crime families still had a firm grip on New England.
The New England mafias their own set of rules within the closest rules around the country.
They're connected to New York families certainly, but it's like a separate franchise.
Even with their own rules, the New England mob had the same goals.
They want to maximize profits, and they want to have the power.
They be involved in prostitution, gambling, bookmaking, anything they can figure out that they can manipulate the system, they'll do it.
Stephen O'Donnell could have easily joined them, but he chose a different path.
Growing up in Providence, Rhode Island, across the street from my house was a mob hitman.
I was really intrigued by it as a young kid.
Would piss off watching that person operate, where they appeared to be in cunity.
So Stephen decided to do something about it.
First is a corrections officer in a maximum security prison filled with mob inmates.
When I was there in the 80s, the prison wasn't incubator for crime.
It was pretty clear that the made guys in the mafia had a following and would do what they wanted to do.
Two of those guys were notorious mob enforcer Jerry Tillinghast and his brother Harold.
Both imprisoned for murdering a fellow Patriarchal family loan shark.
So Harold was in cell blocks that I worked in.
So every day I saw Harold Tillinghast and watched how he got treated.
Years later, Stephen O'Donnell joined the police force and became Steve Foley, a bookie and drug dealer on the streets of Providence.
I was assigned to the organized crime unit, and my job was to infiltrate, prosecute, and incarcerate basically those groups.
So I lost my identity.
So I was.
Steve Foley grows his hair long and does what he needs to do to look the part of a Providence street thug.
It just became part of what I did, and then I started working it.
And different families, different cases.
Stephen has varying levels of success until the day he runs into someone from his old prison guard days.
Harold Tillinghast, out on probation for the murder he committed with his notorious brother Jerry, was in the weight of court and I'm dressed in plain clothes.
And I saw Harold coming out of the courthouse, and I just started talking to him.
And remember me?
And my alter ego name was Steve Foley.
And I could tell that he was confused on who I was because I talked about prison.
That's how I knew you.
Stephen convinced Harold he knew him from prison, but not as a prison guard, as a fellow inmate.
Harold bought in hook line and sinker that I was Steve Foley from prison.
For Stephen, Harold was a way into the tight patriarchal family.
It was really a fact-finding mission with Harold to see where it could take us.
The goal would be to take out the entire patriarchal crime family, starting with Harold's brother Jerry, still in prison for murder, but still running his racket from behind bars.
Harold and Jerry oversaw this cocaine operation, heroin operation, marijuana operation, organized criminal gambling.
After a few months, convincing Harold he's an old buddy, a drug dealer, and a bookie.
Steve Foley makes his move, telling Harold he needs his brother's protection for his street hustles.
Harold introduces Stephen to someone who can help.
Joseph Lemar is a conduit for Jerry Tillinghast.
He's one of his right-hand men at the time.
Harold brought me to see him.
Joe basically said, "I'm the man.
You're a bookie.
This is what you have to do.
He laid it out.
He paid me two hundred dollars a week, and that money will go to Jerry.
And you have no problem.
Anybody bothers you, you come see me.
That's really how it started.
But Steve Foley created problems in the form of fake threats from other local crooks.
So Joe Lemar explains to Jerry Tillinghast on the phone that I'm getting shut down by another crook.
What?
That's a killing for that?
Oh, I pulled a bleep face.
I pulled a killer's one.
They shouldn't be asking you.
They want more power.
They want more.
No.
いや。
And Jerry, he's a volatile guy, and he blows a cork.
And who's after him?
He basically says he's my guy.
He lays out the racketeering by his own voice.
And historically in racketeering prosecutions around the country, it's the defendant's words that would get them jammed up.
Tillinghast's rant is music to Stephen's ears.
We just keep recording and recording.
Why it's happening?
it's all he needs to build a case against one of the Patriarca family's most notorious hitmen.
So over a period of time, we end up prosecuting all of them, including Jerry, who was running the operation from the prison.
They get charged, they all plead guilty, and then they did additional time, another ten years.
It's steady undercover work like Stephen O'Donnell's that sends the Patriarca crime families scurrying.
It's just like any other case—you target them, some go to jail, some don't, and just move on to next one.
Today, Jerry Tillinghast is out on parole and bears no ill will toward O'Donnell.
If the shoe was on the other foot, would I do the same thing?
Probably.
With mafia families around the country still gunning for that next big money maker for guys like O'Donnell and Pistone, the fight may never end.
