Hello, it's Hank.
I'm wearing a jumpsuit that's painted like a volcano because we have a new SciShow resident who is Denali, a volcanologist who knows a tremendous amount of things about volcanoes.
They keep quizzing you, and you keep giving me amazing information.
So the SciShow residency is a thing we do.
We reach out to people who make science videos various places on the internet who know what they're talking about.
You come in, you write scripts with our team, you get fact-checked by fact checkers.
You see how we operate internally.
So you write those scripts, and then you host the scripts that you write, which you've been here doing.
And also, you gave me a jumpsuit.
Yes, I did give you a jumpsuit, so that we can.
Yes, we're jumpsuit twins.
How has hanging with the SciShow team been?
It's been really good.
Yeah, I've really enjoyed it.
That's what I did all summer, and I think the original intention was not for all of my scripts to be about geology.
A lot of them are about geology.
Well, I have.
I know two things.
One, you know a lot about geology.
Two, you want other people to know a lot about geology.
I'm very motivated, and that's not.
It's not like one of the topics.
Yeah, it's it's underrepresented.
We're underrepresented.
Geology is, which is crazy because it's geology is related to everything.
It is.
Life is kind of geology.
It is.
Which I I am getting more and more used to that idea as I learn more about, especially the origins of life.
Yeah, but also, g like life has tremendous impacts on geology.
Yeah, so many of the minerals that we have could not exist without life, which doesn't seem right.
Yes.
はい。
But there are a ton of kinds of rock that couldn't exist without a bunch of oxygen in the atmosphere.
Yeah.
はい。
Which couldn't exist without plants.
Yeah, everything's everything's literally connected.
Turns out it actually gets kind of stressful.
There's only there's only ever been one cell that's been doing it itself the whole time, and also it is basically the earth.
So because you know a lot about geology, you care a lot about geology.
I love I love talking to you about it.
We also had our audience send you some volcano questions.
Yes.
はい。
I want to ask you some of them, and I also am almost certain that I will end up asking some of my own questions as well as we go.
Perfect.
So you prep for the ones that are written down.
Yeah.
And you get a pop quiz every once in a while as well.
Great.
As long as my advisors are not watching us.
Well, we'll do a fact check after.
So we have a question from Mr.
Toadfu Dog who asks, "I had this question when I was a little kid.
Toadfu Dog
What would happen if a tornado ran into an erupting volcano?
Yeah, cause that is that thing that just happens.
So it's cause like volcanoes, like cause like tornadoes are hot on the bottom, cold on the top, and volcanoes are definitely hot on the bottom.
Yeah.
So a tornado that happens independently wouldn't be very normal for it to just run into an eruption happening, but volcanoes can produce their own weather systems.
Of course.
So volcanoes can produce their own like kind of little baby tornadoes.
They're called fire whirls.
And so they see they spout.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so it'll kind of like it just yeah creates little funnel and it'll kind of travel across the top of lava flow and sometimes pick up little bits of like hot ash and stuff.
Um, and I actually have a photo of one from some of my field work, which was pretty cool.
And then what do we do to scale that up to disaster movie proportions?
You do a lot of inaccurate things.
Yeah.
To make a lie.
There you go.
And then you can go into disaster movie.
But I mean, like the volcano weather is kind of terrifying.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Volcanic lightning is crazy.
Yeah.
I've never seen it, but I've always wanted to.
I've never seen it.
You've been how many eruptions have you been to?
I've been to three eruptions.
Okay.
So.
さて。
Have you ever feared for your life?
No.
But I don't study the explosive volcanoes.
I like the ones that just do lava flows because like lava doesn't actually move that fast, so you can kind of just you can walk.
The kind that's going to be moving where the lava flows.
Yeah.
うん。
Oh yeah.
Oh no.
Yeah.
うん。
I just keep walking.
Yeah.
うん。
Obviously, if there erupts next to a building, you can't move.
Building, so that's a big deal.
But field work, I, yeah, I, you, yeah, you can just get out of the way.
I did almost have a volcanic bomb hit my head during my first field season.
So you did almost die.
I well, it it didn't actually hit my head though.
Just it just went past it, so it was fine.
But if it hits your head, I I would have hurt.
I I could have died, but I don't want my mom to know that.
So okay, I'm going to say that definitely you could have died.
No, it was safe.
It was easy.
It was you wear helmets.
No.
いや。
Well, now I feel like we really gas monitor.
We to monitor the volcanic gas.
That's important because that actually is a big issue.
Is that the dangerous stuff?
That's yeah.
Because like rocks flying through the air is also not safe.
But the gas is present all the time, and the rocks aren't flying through the air all the time.
And usually, you can see that it's an area where rocks are flying a lot.
It's just I just got into the volcano, so I just I hadn't taken the lay of the land yet.
Okay.
Well, mom, sorry.
Um.
All right, I've come up with a Hank question already.
Okay.
Why are the volcanoes?
Why does some explode and some ooze?
Yeah.
うん。
There's a lot of oozing going on.
Yeah.
うん。
Little.
Why volcanoes don't do lava popping?
And sometimes it's like, wow, everybody's going to die.
Yeah.
うん。
It's uh.
It's all about the silica content of the lava.
So the chemical composition, if it has a really high percentage of silica, like 60 to 80 percent, then it's going to be a really explosive volcano.
And higher silica is more explosive.
in like of the lava or of the crust.
Uh, the lava itself, which often does reflect the composition of the crust around it, because that's the stuff that gets molten.
Sure.
はい。
Uh, but yeah, if it's low silica, like around fifty percent, then it's going to be a less a or non-explosive volcano.
I cannot figure out why that would matter.
I don't know exactly why what mechanism that silica makes it thicker, but silica makes the lava thicker.
Okay.
And so it's it's harder for the gas to get out of the lava, and so then it's easier for it to build up and explode.
And then probably like like there's this pressure on the gas, and then once the pressure starts to relieve, then a lot of other gas can suddenly become gas.
Yeah.
はい。
Yeah.
はい。
Like exalts out of the.
What was that word?
Exalts.
Exalts out of the lava, where it goes from being like a component to actually being a gas.
Oh.
Yeah.
はい。
That's I never have done.
I think I've ever.
Oh, really?
Okay.
Number two, Katsuki plays asks.
I've heard volcanic soil is very fertile.
Is that true?
Is so why?
Uh, yes.
So the rock itself is not good for growing things.
I wouldn't plant.
No.
Uh, and when ash like originally falls, that's also not great for agriculture, but it contains a lot of uh chemical elements that has like magnesium and phosphorus that's really good for plants.
And so if you let that volcanic material turn into soil and sediment over time, then the soil that it makes eventually is really good to grow things in.
Minerals, man.
Well, then all gets like used up.
Yeah.
はい。
And so there's also the the component of like maybe life.
Like once it becomes soil.
Yeah.
はい。
It's like this is our first chance to use the stuff.
Yeah, and it also is what makes it kind of more worth it for like people to keep living by volcanoes.
Oh, good agriculture.
You know?
ね？
Yeah.
はい。
It like every now and then everything gets destroyed, but like you get such great crops in the meantime.
Dominic Mizuski, what would Earth look like if we had no volcanoes?
Probably not very much life.
Uh.
うん。
Yeah, because a lot of big deal.
I know.
Yeah.
はい。
Well, it on on Earth at least the way that it works is plate tectonics causes volcanism.
Right.
はい。
And without plate tectonics, life wouldn't really be able to exist as we know it.
Right.
はい。
Right.
はい。
Because there's like there's like the two kinds of I don't know, but there's the two kinds of volcanoes.
There's the hot spot volcanoes, which are less dependent on plate tectonics.
Yeah.
うん。
And then there's all of the ones that are around the the where the plate tectonic plates are.
Yes.
はい。
Moving one is going under the other.
Yes.
はい。
Yep.
We have a subduction that, and then sometimes they pull away from each other.
Oh, that all.
Yeah.
うん。
That's what I want to see.
We don't see those much because they're down there.
I don't think about that.
Yeah.
うん。
Well, that's what I study.
I do.
That's my exact.
That's the exact thing.
What is why?
So I get more of me things about that.
Okay.
Well, I mean, also very important.
for life.
Yeah, potentially the origin of life.
Yes, exactly.
Hydrothermal vent colonies.
But but in addition to potentially being the origin of life, also plate tectonics is very important for life.
Yes.
はい。
Yes.
はい。
Just generally.
And you can't really imagine plate tectonics without volcanoes happening.
Not really.
No.
I guess if there were a completely different kind of plate tectonics, well, but I don't know how things would move if it wasn't molten.
Middle.
中間。
With we were talking yesterday, we you were talking about like glaciers, like ice ages, being like decreasing the amount.
Yes.
はい。
Yeah.
うん。
Yeah.
うん。
Yeah.
うん。
I mean, there's still eruptions happening, but it's definitely not at the rate that it is like after deglaciation happens, because the more weight you put on top of the crust, the harder it is for the yeah, the harder it is for the melt to reach the surface.
So just pushing down on the earth.
Yeah.
うん。
With a bunch of ice.
Yeah.
うん。
And that keeps the pressure.
Yeah.
うん。
And then when they everything melts.
Wait, because everything's melting right now, Denali.
Yeah.
うん。
Is everything going to explode?
No.
いや。
So well, well, great.
This is great.
Not for us.
Okay.
Eventually.
Eventually, it's not our problem, but it yeah, eventually you and me, but maybe like maybe future generations.
Yeah.
うん。
So when you remove all of the glacier from on top of a volcanic system, there's two main ways to make melt.
You can increase the temperature, and that's really all we care about at the surface because everything is the same pressure.
But deep in the earth, we care a lot about pressure because the change is really fast.
So if you take away all that pressure, you can also cause melt.
Cause melts doing that.
So so stuff that would otherwise be not liquid.
Yeah, might become solid.
Yeah, yeah.
So it can actually cause more melt to be to be produced.
Just not just that it's easier to get to the surface because there's no glacier.
More melt is actually physically produced in the mantle that then erupts.
Yeah.
うん。
Climate change will eventually cause volcanoes.
If we melt enough glaciers fast enough, then yes, with with the difference, but like for the last deglaciation in Iceland, you had this huge ice cap that covered like most of Iceland, and that went away in a really like fast period of time, and then so within like 600 to 8,000 years.
That long.
Yeah, especially geologically.
Yeah, yeah.
Within like 500, 600 to 8,000 years, you we they saw as much as a 100 times increase in the number of eruptions.
So, but that was also a much faster rate of deglaciation than we're currently causing.
So that process does cause that eventually, but we're not seeing evidence for that happening right now.
While I see, this is why I should pay more attention to geology.
I agree.
There's so many there's so many good facts that are undiscovered because we don't like.
There's not a lot of people making videos about it.
And underwater volcanoes, the same thing happens to that with sea level changes.
So if there's less, yeah.
If there's there's more volcanoes down there.
Yes, like over time, drastic sea level changes can theoretically.
It's a very young burgeoning area of research, but theoretically, that amount of pressure change could also cause more underwater volcanic eruptions.
Wow.
わお。
What?
But why is plate tectonics necessary for life?
My understanding of it is that heat transport and convection currents is very intertwined with plate tectonics.
And so, if you have plate tectonics that's fully stopping, then that's a reflection of what's happening in the mantle.
And if the mantle is no longer convectioning, then the heat transport is also no longer happening, and a lot of the surface processes are reliant on that.
Right of like recycling minerals.
Yeah.
はい。
Yeah.
うん。
Yep.
Exactly.
All the a lot of nutrients get put onto our surface by volcanoes.
Yeah, because that's also a big deal in the ocean is like transporting nutrients from one place to another.
Yeah, you wouldn't really think of minerals as nutrients, but they are.
Yeah, and a lot of the iron in the oceans is comes from mid-ocean ridge systems, and iron is an important thing for photosynthesis by phytoplankton, and phytoplankton are the base of like the entire oceanic food chain.
So, you know, without that, everything doesn't exist.
We do need that.
I was also just reading about whales, and we killed about like so many.
Yeah, tens of millions of whales.
This is a side note.
I'm sorry, but we killed tens of millions of whales, and and everybody expected that when we did that, krill populations would explode because nothing was eating the krill anymore.
Oh right, yeah.
But in fact, krill populations appear to have gone down after we killed all the whales, because the krill were relying on the whales, yeah, bringing nutrients to the top of the ocean and whooping the nutrient out, and that that like made the whales a very important part of the like biological flywheel of the earth, yeah, being nutrients cycling around.
Yeah.
うん。
Without them, the krill populations have still not recovered.
Yeah.
うん。
And right now, that like, like in the past, whales ate more krill than currently exist.
Wow.
So that's crazy.
Yeah.
うん。
Yeah, I feel like a good rule of thumb is like you change like anything in an ecosystem, it's gonna mess everything up.
I just still kill all the ticks.
Yeah.
うん。
Understandable.
But it's contentious.
Are ticks good for anything?
I don't know much about that.
There are mean people eat them, but like.
You know, I know mosquitoes are important for a lot of things.
Mosquitoes are unfortunately very important, especially the larval parts.
Yeah, I don't like them.
I don't want them all to die.
Ah, well, here's the thing.
I don't.
Yeah, we could just kill the malaria parasite if we're going to like extinct something.
We can extinct the malaria parasite, and then like that's much that's much easier.
Like, calculating.
You're thinking much bigger picture than me.
I just don't like getting bug bites.
Oh, yeah, do you're welcome last.
So yeah, there's a problem there.
Yeah, mosquitoes are big issue there.
Okay, there's a weird question from Demented Zero One.
OK、Demented Zero One
Assuming a real world scenario and human-ish physiology, how painful was and how long did last the Gollum experience of climbing all the way to the edge and then falling into Mount Doom?
Uh, would the fall damage actually be the cause of the death rather than the heat?
Yeah.
うん。
Yeah We don't know what kind of volcano it is.
We also don't know if, like, maybe there's just some kind of like magical thing that's going on.
But in general, if I fell into a volcanic volcano, I'm gonna sit there on top.
You're gonna, I'm not gonna sink.
I'm just gonna burn.
You're just gonna burn to death.
Yeah, and you might pass out from the gases, though, which you would probably want.
Yes.
はい。
Okay, next question from Niamat.
Are there any animals/organisms that live in or near volcanoes?
Did someone adapt to this environment?
Thanks for all your work.
Yes, there are so many.
Though the one that's on land that I care the least about, but other people care about, is that there is—I don't remember the name of the bird—but there's a really cool bird that buries its eggs specifically in volcanic, like, rocky soil on the slopes of volcanoes, so they heat incubate the eggs.
So that I do think that's pretty cool.
So strange.
Is that awesome?
Yeah, yeah.
But I love hydrothermal vents, and hydrothermal vents form from volcanic activity at the seafloor, so that entire ecosystem would not exist without like magma chambers up beneath the ocean floor.
I was just reading about how recent our discovery of hydrothermal vent ecosystems are, and you know, wasn't discovered by biologists.
Oh, it was discovered by geologists who were going down there to do like geology.
Yes, but they—they did expect there to be any biology down there because it's why would there be life down there?
So my favorite part of that story is that since they didn't bring any biologists and they weren't expecting any biology, they didn't bring anything to sample biology with, and so they stored the biological samples in vodka bottles that they brought with them, which is the most geologists think they just had them to drink.
Oh, for yeah, for for getting drunk on the ship.
Yeah, and that's what they stored the samples in.
Just sorry to the fru but we need the vodka for science.
And that's all.
That's a whole wild ecosystem.
Yeah, and all based on chemosynthesis, chemotrophyism.
Yes, yes, chemotrophy organisms, and mid-ocean ridges themselves, which is where not all of, but a lot of the hydrothermal vent systems are, they weren't discovered until like the late 50s or late 60s.
The mid-ocean ridges, and they were discovered.
Have you ever heard of academic genealogy?
No, it's basically like academics obsession with like who your advisor's advisor is, like genealogy for pretentious academics.
Yeah, drag queens do this too.
Yes, I don't know that.
So, so my undergraduate advisor, his advisor was one of the people who discovered mid-ocean ridges.
So only two academic generations ago, we didn't know the thing that I'm studying like even existed.
Wow, isn't that crazy?
That's crazy.
Yeah, people are alive now.
Yeah, lots of people are alive now who did not know about that.
Yeah, yeah, we were in a world before that was a thing.
Yeah.
うん。
All right.
よし。
Okay, we have another question.
It's from Hi Hello.
Hi Hello
Can we purposely start a volcanic eruption to prevent a larger one, or at least release the pressure?
So I have a lot of thoughts on this.
I could start a volcano, right?
Like, there's nothing that says I can't.
There's.
ある。
Do you mean legally or scientifically?
No, I mean, I mean in terms of atoms and like energy.
There's it's possible to dig a hole.
It is theoretically possible.
Yeah.
うん。
However, my my first thing with that is I think people really underestimate how massive these systems are.
Yeah.
うん。
It would be really we'd have to dig an insanely large hole, insanely fast, to make a difference enough in the pressure to actually trigger an eruption to happen.
Right.
And if you trigger an eruption to happen, that doesn't necessarily mean anything about whether or not the next one is any better.
Especially since a lot of volcanoes don't only pull directly from a magma reservoir; they pull often directly from the mantle.
You're not like you're not.
It does.
We're not making a difference.
We just have to cool down the mantle.
Well, then we're all going to die.
So we don't.
We just have to.
We just have to remove.
Trillion, like a trillion, trillion, trillion joules from the mantle.
Yeah, that would that would work great.
So, so.
It would be hard to do to begin with.
You wouldn't want to do it because, and also, even if it did trigger one, like.
We have no control over what eruption happens.
You don't want to trigger.
Yeah, we have no control over the size of eruption that's happening, and like it could.
There's just it's a bad idea.
Well, I don't know that anybody's proposing it for clarity.
Like, we don't have to.
We're not.
していません。
We don't have to like prevent someone from trying or do.
Is somebody proposing?
There.
There have been certain politicians who have legitimately proposed that.
Okay.
Well, I've heard that there is like like if you circled the Yellowstone complex.
Oh, we're having a big sigh.
With like geothermal power plants to just turn word for me Yellowstone Yellowstone to trigger just general okay yeah with that you could actually like get some of the heat out of the system.
But you you would have a great geothermal plant, but you're not getting any impactful amount of heat out of this system.
It's Yellowstone.
It's a massive system.
Yeah, it's a it's a lot of system.
Yeah, it's a lot of system.
Okay, several ghosts says when does lava stop being lava?
When it cools enough?
When it mixes with other materials in a certain way?
Where is lava forever?
It is lava once it reaches the surface.
So if you magma, yeah, it's magma underneath, and it can cool down there.
If it cools within the crust, then it is it's called a plutonic rock instead of a volcanic rock from hell.
Yeah.
はい。
From from like the domain of Pluto.
Yeah, the god of the underworld.
You know what that probably is the origin.
Yeah, where I never thought about.
Yeah, yeah, but so so if it cools underground, it's not lava.
It's it's a plutonic rock instead of a volcanic rock.
So what makes it lava is as soon as it goes like past the surface, and and even once it cools at the surface, this varies a little bit by specialty.
I have to clarify that.
But in my specialty, even once it's cooled, we call it lava still.
So like when I'm on like ships doing like oceanic field work, and we pull up rock samples like that guy, well we just label it lava sample, like lava one, lava two.
Yeah, this is lava.
So what number?
Uh, I I think that's lava seventeen from Alvin dive Al five two three seven.
How many times have you been in the Alvin?
Just once.
I've been in the Alvin once, but we do have an episode about the Alvin.
I did an episode about the Alvin.
Well, people will learn how cool it is that you've been in the Alvin.
I do.
I love Alvin.
I should have worn my Alvin socks today.
I didn't.
You have Alvin socks.
I have Alvin socks.
You also have an Alvin jumpsuit.
I do have an Alvin jumpsuit, and the funniest part is I didn't make that Forsyth show.
I already had it because I went as Alvin for Halloween one year.
Yeah, it's it's it's really great.
It's out of reach of us too, you know.
You tell me what this is.
Yeah, so this is this is a mid-ocean ridge basalt.
A morb.
You keep calling them morbs.
Yes, they are called morbs.
Yeah, I call them morbies, but that's not a scientific.
Right, it's morbs.
Yeah, that's just.
And so it's kind of volcanic rock.
It's a kind of basalt, mid-ocean ridge basalt, and so it's a low silica rock.
Okay, right here.
And what happens is when these erupt on when the lava for this erupts on the sea floor, the top layer here is quenched into a layer of volcanic glass.
It's not obsidian.
Obsidian is specifically high silica volcanic glass.
Ah.
So there are actually lots of different kinds of volcanic glass.
This is basaltic glass.
This one doesn't have a ton of the glass left on top, but there's there's some on there.
Ah.
But the fresher the eruption is, then the more fragile and the more opalescent.
So it's like rainbow colored.
The more opalescent the sample.
I was seeing some like some like shiny green.
Yes.
うん。
Yes.
うん。
And I was like, did you get glitter on this?
No.
It's probably remaining.
Yeah.
うん。
Opalescent.
Or there might be some little pyrite flecks on there.
They are green and pink and purple.
Oh yeah, that's opalescence.
Yeah.
うん。
On on that bottom ring there.
Yeah.
うん。
So this is a morb.
This is a lot of what you study.
Yeah.
うん。
That's yes.
I study mid-ocean ridge basalt, and then I study regular basalt from Iceland.
Actually, it's not regular basalt.
It's plagioclase ultraphyreic basalt.
We don't want the basalt.
I don't want to.
Yeah.
うん。
I don't want to get feel bad.
Yeah.
うん。
Yeah.
うん。
I study a different kind of basalt in Iceland.
Okay.
But they're both mid-ocean ridges, Iceland and this.
But but it's from but it's just different depth.
Yeah.
うん。
And this is like a pretty direct sample of what the mantle is like.
Yeah.
うん。
Yes.
はい。
That's one of the things that I like the most about studying morbs.
I'm interested in the chemical composition of the mantle and geochemistry.
It's just one of my subspecialties.
And most of the time, like if you have a volcano erupting underneath a continent as opposed to like in the middle of the ocean, then that molten material has to go through the continent to erupt, and the continent is contaminating all of my geochemistry, and so I can't tell what mantle.
Stupid crust.
Yeah.
うん。
No, I I hate continents actually.
So.
それで。
So I want to know what the actual composition of the mantle is.
To study the mantle, and the best place to do that is submerged like mid-ocean ridges because you have the two tectonic plates pulling apart, and the molten material is coming up between it.
Yeah.
うん。
So it's the most pure sample of mantle material that we can get, and we specifically sample the glass most often as opposed to the main the whole rock that we call it because the faster it cools, the less time there is for it to interact with the sea water and stuff, which also mess with my chemistry and alter it anyway.
So we study the glass because it quenches the fastest.
And so that's that's our mantle.
The closest we can get to mantle representation.
It feels like this stuff would never touch the sea water.
Um, it's you get seawater sometimes trapped inside the lava pillows and circulating through it.
Lava pillows.
Yes, lava pillows.
Uh, they're pillow shaped lava.
Okay.
Yeah, and then we have pretty hard.
Yeah.
うん。
Yeah.
うん。
Now you wouldn't want to sleep on them or anything.
Yeah.
うん。
Cute.
Yeah.
うん。
Next question is from the worst Emily, which just have to say no, you're not.
There's so many Emily's.
There's definitely one worst for you.
Yeah.
うん。
And asks, I just want to know what they smell like.
Yeah.
うん。
Sulfur smells bad the whole time.
Yeah, I I I quite famously at work actually have a very bad sense of smell, um.
So it never really bothered me, but it is strong enough that you I can faintly smell it, and everyone else can very strongly smell it.
It's very unpleasant.
Um, that's how they got an idea of what was the like base of hydrothermal vent ecosystems.
Is the water they collected smelled like sulfur?
Oh, fascinating.
Okay.
Bonus question from the peanut gallery.
We're watching.
What I know, what your what your favorite volcano movie is.
My okay, so I have a favorite volcano show, but it's not for the reason that you think it is.
There's a volcano show.
It's the whole show is not about volcanoes, but there's volcanoes in it.
Okay.
I think the show is called the Nautilus, uh, and the reason I started watching it is because the Nautilus was a famous ship.
So any like marine science person is very interested in things called the Nautilus, and they based it off of someone who was theoretically a real guy who like piloted the ship.
The Nautilus was the captain of the ship, the Nautilus.
But so I went into it thinking that it was gonna be like they made it look originally like it was gonna be somewhat historically based, and I like historical fiction, so I was like, this will be great.
It was the least scientifically accurate thing I've ever seen in my whole life.
But but it's your favorite.
Yes, but because it it reached it reached a threshold where it stopped pissing me off and it became my favorite thing ever because there were underwater volcanoes and and there was a sub in it and I've been down in a sub and so I was all excited about this and they go down in this sub and there's like think if you put if you take an on land volcano with its fountaining lava and you put it on the ocean floor and it's like bad CGI they just put it that's what it was like rivers of lava running through the ocean floor which doesn't happen by the way because the water quenches it immediately like water holds so much yeah eruptions are actually kind of anti climactic down there because you know you don't see a whole lot of molten stuff I've seen some really great footage of lava coming from the land into the water yes yeah that's pretty cool yes uh the bottom of the ocean I think it's pretty cool but visually it is not quite as impactful as on land eruption but but in the show it was magnificent, and they had basalt columns.
Have you ever seen those hexagonal columns of basalt?
They're famous in Iceland.
Yeah, yeah, they got yeah, yeah.
Yeah, they had these basalt columns, and there was this character in it.
I don't remember his name.
There was this character in it who was a paleontologist.
This is a show.
What era is this from?
It came out like last year.
Okay, like last year.
Yeah, it was on Amazon Prime.
It came out last year, and so there were these basalt columns, and this paleontologist finds a fossil in it, which is not fossils.
Yes, you know why?
That's so upsetting because fossils don't get recorded in basalt like that.
It doesn't happen, and that was that exact scene was the moment that I fell in love with it.
Like this is the dumbest thing I've ever seen.
I love it.
So that is my that's my favorite, but it's not it's not for the reasons because it's good.
Not because it's good.
It's funny.
I was just I was just thinking like why like the way that you have like medical dramas why don't we have science dramas but apparently we do yeah we do bad yeah they're just really awful yeah well and that's the thing I bet if I was like if I was a doctor I'd be like oh my god these medical dramas are so full of crap but like I have to be ignorant in order to enjoy it and I probably yeah but I I that's why ended up liking it because it felt like such a niche insult that they have to almost be in on it to make it that bad I know that's not the case that they actually just didn't know what they were doing but it almost felt like wow like I'm in on a really special joke but no they were totally serious and it was a really dramatic scene too they're like oh my god there's life down here and they're and then it was a crinoid fossil do you know what a crinoid is it's it's like a kind of looks like a starfish but it's not a starfish so the biologists don't get mad at me but they have real fish yeah yeah and so and I have a different fun fact about crinoids after this but it was a it was a crinoid fossil and basically a guy got eaten alive by crinoids after this which also is not how crinoids work don't know much about who knows though there could be piranha crinoids somewhere apparently in the deep sea yeah you know where where things moves so quickly everyone knows at yeah next to the lava yeah so about crinoids um the I saw one from the sub and again I'm not a biology person in my like you have to take notes when you're in the Alvin about anything that you see and I just wrote like you know generic gray fish like and all my biology notes because I don't know what any of those things are now I know some about them but um I I had only ever heard of crinoids in the context of fossils like in a class and so I I didn't know that they were still that they were still here and then I saw one from the sub and I like looked around and I was like oh this is normal because everyone else had been before and I was like oh there's supposed to be here they have a a biology guide for geologists like a little packet for us and so and so I like frantically.
was looking through it and I'm like, huh?
They're still here.
That's crazy.
I'd only ever seen them in fossils.
That's crazy.
So, yeah, it was really embarrassing, actually.
But did you tell anybody?
You were you were like, oh no, I was I was no, I was playing it cool.
I was no one else was freaking out, so it couldn't have been that big of a deal.
You can't you you can't be embarrassed by your inside thoughts.
Yeah, exactly.
Those no one knows them.
You keep them to yourself, and then you say them on a YouTube show.
Now you can be embarrassed.
That's right.
Denali, thank you for chatting with me.
There will be ten episodes that you worked on and hosted that will be going up every week for the next while.
Thank you so much for doing that and for sharing your knowledge and passion for the rocks of the Earth.
Thank you for having me here.
They're weird rocks, yeah.
And if you want to find Denali, where can we find you?
I am on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube now under the username Daikonite, which is which is an igneous intrusion.
That's what we call igneous intrusions in geology, and that's the only thing that name is based on.
Right.
Is it spelled the same?
Yep.
うん。
Great.
