If you accidentally scratch your Teflon pan and eat some of that coating, what would happen?
Well, if you saw that video of cows drinking water near a Teflon factory and getting really sick, you'd think that it was dangerous.
But if you ate a flake of Teflon, that wouldn't really happen.
Teflon is a long chain of carbon atoms surrounded by fluorine atoms, and these carbon-fluorine bonds are some of the strongest single bonds in organic chemistry.
Which means that this molecule doesn't really want to react with anything.
You can't dissolve it with most acids.
It's very heat resistant, and it doesn't stick to food when cooking, which is why it's used in non-stick pans.
For that same reason, it also shouldn't react with your body.
So if you eat it, it will likely pass through.
But there are three other problems with non-stick pans.
First, if you overheat them to more than three hundred degrees Celsius, the coating can start to release fumes, and breathing them in could give you the so-called Teflon flu.
Symptoms include things like fevers, chills, and chest tightness, but they usually pass within forty-eight hours.
The second problem is that to make these pans, manufacturers need to use other chemicals, which are much more dangerous than Teflon, and they're often the ones that leak from factories.
They sneak into the environment and even into our blood, and they've been linked with all sorts of health issues.
That's likely how those cows got sick.
They're called forever chemicals or PFAS.
So could tiny amounts of these chemicals make it onto a pan?
Well, they shouldn't, but the data on whether they do or don't actually isn't great, which is problem number three.
The PFAS field is very young and very under-researched in some parts.
For example, new studies are coming out about the health effects of Teflon as a microplastic, and some suggest that it might not be as harmless as we thought.
While other studies are showing no adverse health effects.
If you want to know more, we made a whole long-form video about forever chemicals last year.
