And yeah, let's get started.
So the first question I should probably answer is why YouTube?
Why start uploading videos?
And actually, a lot of my subscribers don't know this, but before I was doing YouTube, I was making videos for Chinese social media.
What things you do?
You want people?
You teaching English seemed the natural choice for what kind of channel I would make.
So as you guys can see, the first couple of months uploading videos two, three, even four times a week on my channel, nothing really happened.
I wasn't really getting any views, and just to show you guys, I actually have my old videos saved here.
They're unlisted now, so you can't see them on my channel anymore.
But you can see the view counts.
You know, seventy-nine, sixty-three, nineteen, nineteen, and it felt kind of frustrating at first.
I will admit, you know, I would get off work.
I had worked all day long teaching at my school.
I would come home, and I would frantically use my time in the evening to make a video, and I would put hours and hours into this recording, editing, uploading, and yeah, I have to admit, it felt a little frustrating when I would spend my whole evening doing that, and then the video would get nineteen views.
You know, that didn't feel great, but I was determined to keep going and to give it at least six months.
That's what I had decided.
I was going to give this six months, and if I was still getting nineteen views at the end of six months, then I would call it quits.
But then something very exciting happened.
I woke up one morning and checked my account and saw that one of my videos had started to get thousands of views.
Here's the video right here.
It was all about not giving up on learning English, and this ended up getting a hundred fifty thousand views, which got me over seven thousand subs and got my channel monetized, meaning I could start to make money from my channel when people watched my videos.
Now I will say I was a little disappointed to see this number, a hundred forty-nine thousand views, a hundred forty-nine dollars.
You know I'd always heard this statistic about YouTube: on average, per one thousand views, most creators get about seven dollars.
Right?
ね？
If your video gets a thousand views, you'll get seven dollars.
So in my mind, this number was very low.
I was expecting seven times that much, but um, you know, I was just happy to be making anything, like I said, making something for all of my time and energy.
So it felt good to just get subscribers, get monetized, and get something.
Now, as you can see, after that video blew up, I started to get more and more views on my videos: twenty thousand, twenty thousand, thirty thousand, twenty k, a hundred twenty-one k, one hundred k, thirty, forty-two, thirty-one.
And then suddenly, one of my videos really took off.
It got one point three million views.
It got me a hundred twenty thousand subscribers just from this one video, and it made me two point five thousand dollars.
Now, keep in mind, this is over the course of a couple years.
It's performed this well that didn't happen all at once.
It was a slow and steady climb, as you can see here, very gradual.
But when this first happened, I mean, I was so excited.
I remember I was traveling in Japan at the time, and I actually got really distracted on my vacation.
I just kept checking this number over and over, watching the subscribers go up and up and up.
I think at one point I was gaining four thousand subscribers a day.
It was really, really exciting.
And silly me, I was very naive.
I thought that moving forward, all of my videos were going to do this well.
Well, to be fair, they were doing pretty well: one hundred twenty-five k, two hundred k, two forty-five.
But over time, the numbers really started to drop: twenty-eight, twenty, twenty-three, twenty.
It seemed like it was difficult to break through that thirty k mark: twenty-one, twenty-four, forty thousand views, thirty.
You know, I mean, I wasn't complaining.
As you can see, I was making some money from it.
I think at this point, I was making about a thousand dollars a month in revenue.
So I mean, that's way more than I had ever made from social media before.
I was I was very happy about that, but I was feeling frustrated that I couldn't get another big video until this one happened today.
This is my biggest video ever on this channel.
It got two point one million views.
It got me so crazy.
Another hundred thirteen thousand subscribers.
and ended up making me five thousand dollars.
Now, as you can see, this is still going up, and I mean, it makes about five thousand views per day to this day.
So, this video is still performing really well, and it it makes a lot of my income for me still here on YouTube.
Now, at this point, though, I will admit I was starting to get pretty frustrated with YouTube's monetization system.
I was seeing, okay, two million views.
If I was getting seven dollars per thousand views, that should be fourteen thousand dollars, not five thousand dollars.
I should be making like three times what I'm making.
But the thing is, YouTube pays you based on what kind of content you make, right?
And who is watching your content?
And generally speaking, English language learning videos as a genre don't make very much money.
They make it at least for me between one and four dollars per one thousand views.
So I wasn't really making as much as I had originally hoped, but once again, I was just happy that something was happening, right?
I was getting millions of views, hundreds of thousands of subs, and thousands of dollars.
I mean, I was not gonna complain about that.
So yeah, at that time, I was uploading one to maybe three videos a week, although three felt like a lot of work.
And on a typical month, I was making somewhere between eight hundred dollars and a thousand five hundred dollars, something like that.
I also started a channel membership where people could sign up for one dollar and join a membership where they'd get access to extra videos and early access to videos and PDFs for my videos, and that started to pick up a little bit and earn me a little bit of money as well.
So yeah, somewhere around fifteen hundred dollars per month.
And what I'd like to do now is show you guys my current month, how much I made in the last twenty eight days because I've had a very good month on this channel.
As you can see, typically I get around three hundred thousand views per month, but this month I got two point two million views.
So let's see how much I made in the last twenty eight days.
One point six thousand dollars, almost one thousand seven hundred dollars.
And yeah, I would say that's actually on the high side.
Um, the last couple months, it's been more like a thousand dollars a month.
So one point six is pretty high for my channel, actually.
Now, what I'd like to do is show you guys the the total amount of money that I've made on my channel.
Remember, I uploaded my first video on April first of twenty twenty four.
At the time of recording this, it's September twenty first, twenty twenty six.
So all together, that means I've been working on this channel for roughly thirty months.
Okay, so in those thirty months, I've gained six hundred thirty six thousand subs, which means I've actually lost almost a hundred thousand subscribers over the over the years.
I've gotten eleven point five million views, and that has earned me twenty eight thousand dollars.
That twenty eight thousand does include money made from my channel members—these people who pay one dollar a month on YouTube.
But I also have a Patreon, which is the same thing.
They can pay one dollar a month to get extra benefits, and my total earnings from that is three thousand six hundred thirty one dollars.
So including that, that brings us up to thirty one thousand seven hundred forty four dollars.
Plus, I've been selling a book on Amazon this month as part of my new series where I read a book to learn English with my subscribers.
I'll be honest; those sales have been pretty disappointing.
I've gotten over a million views on videos promoting the book.
I talk about you know picking up a copy on Amazon.
Amazon
I include the purchase link in the description, in the comments.
I'm talking about it.
I'm promoting it, and with over a million views doing that, it has only sold seventy four copies, which made me about a hundred twenty five dollars.
And once again, I I don't want to sound like I'm complaining.
It's great, and I'm really grateful for all of this money and for this opportunity.
Like of course, I'm grateful.
I just, it's not quite what I expected.
You know, a million views.
You need the book to really get the most out of the video series.
You know, it's it's pretty affordable the book.
Um, so I would have have expected something more than seventy sales.
I would have expected maybe ten times that much, but you know, here we are.
So, all of this brings our grand total of money earned over the last thirty months to thirty-five point eight million dollars, thirty-one thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine dollars.
Now it's time to do the bad math to think about expenses, taxes.
How much should I take away?
And then we will figure out my hourly wage.
How much money I've made per hour working on this YouTube channel?
Okay, so my expenses: this microphone was three hundred fifty dollars.
A new computer was a thousand five hundred.
There are subscription fees for editing services, new phones, new cameras, lights.
I needed a printer because I do a lot of my videos pen and paper.
So, the grand total for my expenses over the last thirty months is three thousand five hundred dollars, bringing us back down to twenty-eight thousand.
Basically, my Patreon over the years paid for my expenses.
Okay, and then taking away taxes, which ends up being about five thousand six hundred dollars, my net revenue is twenty-two thousand six hundred ninety-five dollars for the last thirty months.
Now, how much time have I put into this channel?
These days, it's a little bit less.
In the beginning, it was a little bit more.
Sometimes a lot more.
I'm going to say, on average, I've put about four hours a week into this YouTube channel.
So, factoring in four hours a week for thirty months, that means my hourly wage for this YouTube channel is about forty-three dollars.
Remember that that's after tax.
I'm very grateful for that number, forty-three dollars an hour.
I think that's great, and that's that's a solid hourly wage.
Really good, actually, right?
I just think that people, myself included, might not expect it to be that low for a channel with five hundred thousand subs and millions and millions of views.
Before doing YouTube, I mean, I looked at channels my size and I thought they must be millionaires.
When the reality is, I mean, my channel has never made more than two thousand dollars a month.
And once again, two thousand dollars—like that's that's a decent amount of money.
I can't go full time with that.
I mean, I can't support me and my wife with that amount of money.
I can't start a family with that amount of money.
Um, but it's nice.
It's a nice bonus.
It's a nice side hustle on top of my normal work.
Honestly, if I hadn't started the YouTube channel, I would probably be doing hourly tutoring, working one-on-one with the with a student and teaching them English.
And I've done that before, and you can make some decent money doing that, even up to around a hundred dollars an hour.
Um, but the thing is, doing that just really feels like selling your time directly.
Something about it feels painfully transactional, right?
I give you an hour of my life; you give me this money.
We go our separate ways.
It just feels like that time kind of disappears, or or that I'm really just selling my time directly.
And I am glad I've decided to do this instead.
I've gained a lot of skills along the way.
I mean, I learned a lot about editing sound and editing video, um, how to build a personal brand, what people respond to, what they don't.
I think the sense of accomplishment is also worth mentioning.
You know, like I love my hundred thousand subscriber silver YouTube plaque.
Like I'm so proud of that, and I'm super proud of of all of these hours these these weeks, man.
These five hundred twenty-one total hours that I've put into this channel.
I look forward to continuing the channel and hopefully getting that one million subscriber golden plaque.
I mean, yeah, that that would be awesome.
But it would also be dishonest of me to not include the lows of this journey.
I haven't always loved the content that I've made.
Sometimes it's really felt like a slog.
Some months I barely made any money at all, and it really felt like the channel was was losing momentum and going nowhere.
And all of my videos were performing poorly.
And every time I would check my YouTube, you know, home home page in the studio, I would see the numbers getting lower and lower, and to the point where I've had to take some months off of YouTube.
There were certain months where I refused to even look at the home page, refused to check, was trying really hard not to think about it because it.
It made me feel really anxious and depressed just watching my channel go down.
If I was going to give advice to somebody considering starting a YouTube channel, I guess I would just say, make videos about stuff that's actually interesting to you, that you actually care about, and then it's going to feel more like just a hobby and not something you have to do to make money.
I would also say manage your expectations a little bit.
I mean, unless you are making millions and millions of views in a niche that generates a lot of revenue every month, it's probably going to be a side hustle for you.
You're not going to be an instant millionaire.
You're not going to quit your day job.
It's probably just going to be some grocery money, some gas money.
So, be okay with that going into it, and don't expect to become the next PewDiePie or Moist Critical.
You know, I'm very lucky that I have a full time job outside of YouTube that pays pretty well, and I've got a comfortable lifestyle.
Obviously, it's much more comfortable with an extra one thousand or two thousand dollars a month.
Here's something else I want to show you guys.
This is a video I posted recently.
It got eight hundred fifty thousand views.
It only made three hundred twenty dollars.
So, I think you know YouTube is also making some changes to their monetization policies, and that's been kind of frustrating recently.
I mean, I don't know what to say.
Do I wish my channel was making ten thousand a month?
Of course, I do.
I mean, that would be amazing, and I would be able to really go all in if that were the case.
Maybe if I had ten times as many members, um, that would be possible.
I mean, here's the other thing I want to say is I've got six hundred fifty members on my channel here.
I've got another fifty on Patreon.
Patreon
I think if it wasn't for these members, I definitely would not still be on YouTube.
Uh, these guys have made it possible for me to keep going.
This is a big chunk of my monthly income, and I even made a video last year talking about how I was planning to quit YouTube.
But I mean, these guys really pulled through for me.
I I appreciate my members so much, guys.
If you're watching this and you're a member, I know I say this all the time, but you really make my channel possible.
I just could not keep going without you guys.
It it just wouldn't work.
I said I would talk about my plans for the future, and very briefly, I think that's going to be to continue with this channel.
Um, as long as people are watching, I think I'm just going to keep making videos.
I do work full time now, so I'm only able to make one video a week, maybe two, but that would be very rare.
I mean, I get up at six thirty.
I go to work.
I come home at five or six.
I walk my dog.
I work out.
I cook dinner, and it's eight p.m.
You know, I I maybe have time to make a video, but then it's I'm going to bed too late, and I'm tired.
It definitely requires some sacrifice, even one video per week.
You know, on this note, the other thing I didn't really mention yet is hobbies.
Since making this YouTube channel, I haven't really had time to do a lot of the things I used to do for fun.
I mean, I used to write books for fun, write stories.
I used to play video games.
I'll be honest.
If if I take some time for myself and I'm doing a hobby, there will be a voice at the back of my head saying, you know, you could be making a video right now.
You should be making a video right now.
So that's a little frustrating.
Too something else to think about.
You know, how do you want to spend your very limited time?
You know, there's only so many hours in a day.
I think where I'm at right now is I'm okay with it.
In the future, I might want to upload less and give myself more time for myself and my hobbies.
But you know, I I also do enjoy making videos, and I like the process of it.
At this point, so it is it has kind of become a hobby of mine.
So anyways, I'm I'm rambling.
I'm all over the place, but my point is, it is a sacrifice.
It does require your time and energy.
You do have to give some other things up, but if you've picked the right genre, if you've picked the right kind of videos, hopefully it will feel like fun sometimes too.
So guys, that's all for this video.
I hope that was somewhat informative.
I tried to structure this in an organized way.
I think I was a little bit all over the place, but hopefully, if you're curious about YouTube and making money on YouTube, you know, maybe even becoming a YouTuber yourself, yeah.
Hopefully, I was able to shed some light.
Thanks for watching, guys.
