Arcades and amusements all have the same games, right?
Most of them take in your money and pay out some tickets that you can trade for an almost worthless prize.
What if they were...
better?
My next stop on the road trip was in Suffolk, the most easterly of all the English counties.
I’m still by the seaside, England has a lot of coastline, and many of the interesting things are on it.
Or over it.
I’ve wanted to come here to Southwold Pier to see the Under the Pier show for years and years and years.
I’ve been to the London outpost, but I’ve never been to the original workshop.
Tim Hunkin is a name that some viewers may recognise.
He’s an engineer and cartoonist, he created the Secret Life of Machines for Channel 4, and he now posts a lot of his experiments and inventions to YouTube.
And he operates two arcades of strange automata, one in London, Novelty Automation, and one that’s coming up to 25 years on Southwold Pier.
The catch for this video is that, alas, Tim Hunkin himself couldn’t be there that day.
This was one continuous road trip, and occasionally things didn’t work out.
But his grandson, Sam, was there and was able to show me a bit of the behind the scenes, because he’s sometimes the one who keeps the arcade running day-to-day.
So, early in the morning, before many tourists arrived, I grabbed my 360 camera and filmed for you some of the many bizarre games and automata at the Under the Pier Show.
So, I recognise a couple of these from London.
-Yes.
-Are these the experimental ones?
Are these...
これは…
is there a different style to the ones here?
Yeah.
I think mostly they’re all the same style for Tim.
They’re all very satirical, humorous.
So, the ones you say you recognise, so, for instance...
-I recognise Test Your Nerve.
-Test Your Nerve.
They are duplicates, mostly because they’re...
I think he feels like they’re his most popular and his most, like, iconic.
Test Your Nerve is very simple, put in a coin, reach into the cage and hold down the button.
The clock will spin slowly from cowardly to normal to brave to reckless, while the dog with the glowing eyes pants and drips warm drool onto your hand.
And then...
そして…
(mechanical barking) (laughter) I knew that was coming, and still...
-And yet.
Yep.
(laughter) So, what’s the history of that one?
That must have been one of the first, then.
It is.
I think it was 1988.
So, it’s been a while.
-Yeah.
It’s been a while, and he’s...
All these machines basically started as a hobby.
It then spiralled out of control quite massively, as you can tell.
He likes entertaining people, likes seeing them laugh, and that’s his reward for all of this effort basically.
Right.
I tried the Quick-Fit aerobics workout, a repurposed medical chair...
Oh!
Okay.
No, that’s...
(fast-paced ’80s music) -That’s the butt massage.
-That’s rotating my arse.
(laughs) (whizzing squeal) But it’s basically some form of old medical, like physiological sort of bed.
But it’s basically a recycled machine.
He got this base for everything, and he’s like, “Oh, I can turn the voltage up on these motors, can’t I?
” and make them go a little bit faster.
That’s a lot of his philosophy, usually, is he gets stuff, he’s just like, “Ooh, I can turn that up a little bit, remove the safeties for that.
” Sam did give me a look inside one of the machines, the modern piracy simulator, where you bounce up and down on the waves to propel yourself up.
Okay, that is a programmable logic controller, I think?
It is, yeah.
These are, basically, he gets these off eBay second-hand.
They’re like industrial-grade PLCs.
Yeah, they’ll have to be for something like this.
Yeah, exactly.
So, they go like hundreds of thousands of times, these machines.
So having something that’s reliable is essential, basically.
He writes the code for everything once.
It all works the same every single time.
So, that basically never breaks.
Anything that’s...
-The physical stuff, on the other hand...
Yes, the physical stuff like, you know, gears, cogs, things like that.
I will point you towards Tim’s video on Programmable Logic Controllers, because it’s very thorough, but basically, those are extremely rugged, specialised computers.
If you watch lots of makers on YouTube, you might expect Arduinos or Raspberry Pis or some other little computer, but no.
PLCs are industrial-grade, very limited, very difficult to program, but they can be expected to work under really tough conditions, like in air filled with ocean spray, for decades.
Rent-a-Dog?
This one has been done about 130,000 times since it was made.
Wow!
There was a little counter unit inside to prove that number.
Down there.
-129,105.
129,105。
I hope that shows up.
Also, a can of beans, which...
That’s for the coin counter, which is being replaced as we speak.
-Right.
(laughter) But again, everything homemade and home-broken.
(game music plays) Another tourist did have a quick walk with the Rent-A-Dog, it’s made of a repurposed treadmill and TV screens with stop-motion animations, and I read the disclaimer on the side, which does give away Tim Hunkin’s sense of humour.
“The unaccountable multinational company desirous of maximising “its directors’ bonus payments”.
I see what Tim’s going for with these machines.
(laughs) Oh!
(laughs) (game music plays) I skipped over the Bathyscape, as someone was already inside, the home-made motion platform bouncing back and forth and bubbles rising in the window, simulating a dive under the pier.
Next up was the Mobility Masterclass.
Oh, my...
Oh, wow!
That’s a live camera feed from there.
-It is.
It is indeed.
“Can you cross the motorway using the Zimmer frame?
” Oh well, okay.
Yep.
はい。
There was a tiny camera embedded in the diorama overhead that moved to create the live point-of-view.
Oh, that moves.
The whole frame moves.
[game announcer] Very good.
I pulled on the Zimmer frame, the walker, and that moved the camera forwards across the road, and if it got nudged by a car, I would lose.
I couldn’t tell you if this was a deliberate satire on hostile infrastructure and car-first policies, or just a quick joke because Tim found a walking frame somewhere and decided to make a game out of it.
Oh, this is Frogger.
-You’ve done Frogger in real life.
-(laughs) This is brilliant.
The thing that impressed me most about the machines was their reliability.
There are plenty of hackers and makers who’ll put something like this together for one show or one video, and I don’t want to denigrate that, but it’s a whole other level to build machines that still work after they’ve been played with by the general public day after day, year after year.
Tim Hunkin’s work is often a satire of modern life...
(spray hisses) but it’s also often based in frustration at the rich and unaccountable, whether that be corporations or people.
This is one of the newer ones.
Revolution.
革命。
As you can see, it’s a lot of complicated things going on.
There are, but a lot of those are wire loops, I assume for ball bearings to go around?
-Yes.
The game here was simple: drop the ball bearing from the top, hit the target, and if your aim is true, you will not make anyone richer, but you will make the rich poorer.
I mean, presumably, I could wait until it gets to the bottom, and just drop it down on “stately home”, but that feels like...
There we go.
よし。
Golf course.
-Golf course.
Okay.
(machine whirring) (laughs) This is kind of what he loves to do.
It’s less of having...
-Yes!
-Nice.
Less of having all of the game in like a computer screen.
Right.
Having all of this displayed and visible makes it a lot more enjoyable for him.
I did manage to hit five out of five in the end, including “tax havens”, “stately home”, and, with a very pleasing run of the ball bearing...
“private jet”.
Sam opened up this one, and again, a programmable logic controller.
I really appreciate these as well, when I’m in London working, because I will know basically nothing about what’s going on.
But when a machine breaks, and I can see all the lights here...
For every sensor or button that’s pressed, for instance if I press that I think the light will come on just there.
Yes, it will.
That all corresponds to, you know, different things here, I can trace it back, and I can see exactly what might have, you know, fallen off, broken.
-So you might be able to fix it with...
-Yeah.
reattaching something.
Or just whatever tools that I might have on site.
There was a repurposed whack-a-mole machine, again, targeting bankers, and a game where you had to literally climb the housing ladder.
(beeping) -Aww, almost.
-(laughs) Oh, there’s a screen up there!
[game announcer] The house is yours.
(mechanical cheering) And for so long, this just existed here on the pier...
-Yeah, yeah.
just for passers-by who were tourists.
He doesn’t really do much, kind of like, advertising or anything like that.
It’s not really his style.
Also, what a beautiful location for it.
There was one last thing to see: other than the little touches around the pier, like the animated ‘no smoking’ sign, and the seating booths and trash cans, all of which are also Tim’s work.
The last thing was the clock at the end of the pier, which regularly puts on a display, and...
(laughter) Can I show that on YouTube?
I have no idea if I can show that on YouTube.
I don't know where the YouTube guidelines stand on metal figures with Barbie-doll anatomy dropping their shorts and spraying water every half hour!
But I do know that censoring it is funnier.
Hopefully, I’ve shown enough of this without giving too many spoilers?
I think the thing is, you know, it’s all very eccentric.
It’s all very funny, entertaining.
So as long as you’ve shown some of them, people get the idea of, you know, all other stuff and what to expect.
So, that’s all you need, really.
Oh there’s a...
right, we’re getting a lot of tourists.
I’m going to take my camera away before, uh...
We’ll do that.
-Thank you so much.
-Thank you very much as well.
Thank you for coming.
It’s a pleasure to meet you.
-Pleasure to meet you.
The next episode of this series is on Nebula right now, and coming this week, it’s the grand finale of Jet Lag: The Game’s Japanorama!
I joined the Jet Lag team in a seven-day race from the southernmost to the northernmost train station in Japan, and if you want to watch every episode, including the finale, this week, along with the behind-the-scenes Layover podcast and extra deleted scenes, you should join Nebula.
Plus, Nebula has exclusive series that you can’t see anywhere else, like the Ten Pound Traveller, where professional tour guide and friend-of-the-show J Draper finds the strangest things to do in London that cost less than £10.
Or there’s the new second season of Day Pass, by Jason from Not Just Bikes, exploring all the transit of cities around the world at a slightly gentler pace than Jet Lag.
And as this video goes out, Nebula subscriptions are 50% off, that’s just $30 for the year, which works out to just $2.

There’s pricing in euros and pounds too.
