All right, so this is the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable phone.
But is it really different compared to something like this, the 18 or 18 Pro Max?
Is it really worth the extra $800 or more you'd have to pay for it?
I've been using it, so let me tell you.
Okay, so first up, we got to talk about form factor.
This is a compact phone.
We've got a 5.4 inch display up front, compared to like the 6.3 inch display on the 18 Pro and the 6.9 inch
display on the 18 Pro Max.
18 Pro Max
And I've been using this thing for like a week straight, and I just love how compact it is because you can reach around the entire screen with just like your thumb.
Nothing's out of reach.
It's actually really comfortable to use.
And when I go back to my 18 Pro Max, I'm not gonna lie.
I look at it and I'm like, it's a big screen.
And of course, I documented my experience throughout the week, so my full review is gonna be linked down below in the description.
Check that out after the comparison.
This has been really, really fun to use because it's just easy to use and like throwing it into your pocket, really easy.
I'm able to put this into certain shirt pockets of mine, which is not something you can do with any of the other phones, and have it nicely tucked away.
I am really not mad at this, and I kind of knew this was coming because of the Z Fold Eight.
A lot of people enjoy this form factor just because of how comfortable it is to use.
Now, here's the thing: when we're talking about these two devices, while this is easy to hold in the hand, put in your pocket, like taking a call is easy.
What's tough are the buttons.
Whether you came from a slab phone with buttons on the left
or the right, or even a foldable where those volume buttons are on the right, this one is going to be something that takes you some time to get used to the placement.
I found myself pressing the power button quite a bit, expecting to change the volume.
I think struggling with that muscle memory is going to be a very real experience, at least in the beginning.
But using it in this mode isn't the only way you can use it, and this is the Duo, so you can pop the screen open and get access to the 7.6 inch display,
bigger than any of the phones that we have over here.
So this is the biggest.
iPhone that exists right now.
It's crazy that it's both the smallest and the biggest at the same time.
But when you're in this mode, you have way more screen real estate.
So that means bigger apps and more things you can do on those apps, as well as a much bigger screen for watching content.
When it comes to this bigger inside display, we got a completely different screen than we've ever seen on any iPhone.
This is a nano texture display, and Apple has this on like their MacBooks, their monitors, but never on the iPhone before.
And it is a very, very different experience because it's not that glossy, shiny display that we're used to.
Even on the outside, this one is a nice matted look, so it's soft.
The colors are really vibrant, and this is actually a really good screen to hide that crease that's in the middle.
So it's a great-looking screen, and it's huge.
When it comes to watching content on an iPhone, it's a very different experience.
I mean, you guys can see it for yourselves.
We've got what feels like a much bigger screen on the Duo.
Duo
When you're watching something like everything, just seems a bit brighter because this is a matte display.
We don't have to worry about glare and reflections as much.
So when you're watching content, it just feels like you're watching what you see instead of having all these other potential distractions when you're watching something with a glossy display.
I'm not saying all matte displays are better, but I think that adds to the cleaner experience that you're getting here.
And if you don't want to have the big old display, there's something about watching content on a screen this size.
It feels really nice.
Like if I were to take this thing on a commute, maybe like I'm on a train or on the bus, even the plane.
I'm not mad at this.
Like I can sit back and just watch something in the palm of my hand, and it still looks really, really good.
So with the duo, you got options.
Of course, screens and brightness and colors, all that is nice, but sound is also a big part of it.
Take a listen to what the speaker quality sounds like between the two of them.
So on an 18 Pro, whether it's the Pro or Pro Max, you get your typical stereo experience.
It's a little different when it comes to the Duo.
Duo
You got one speaker at the top side of your left side, and on the bottom of the right side.
What do you guys think?
Could you hear it well enough to have an opinion?
They both sound very very similar.
I think the Pro has a slight edge too.
Pro
You're definitely right.
The Pro does sound better, and it kind of makes sense, right?
Pro
We've got a more uniform output over here.
One, the audio is being output at the same level versus like this diagonal thing.
I mean, Apple does a fantastic job pulling this off though, because it feels like stereo sound.
But this sounds more uniform, and because the 18 Pro is thicker than the Duo,
remember the Duo is actually a really thin device when it's open like this.
That gives less room for the speakers to do their thing, or less room for even bigger speakers.
So the Duo doesn't quite have as much of a kick that you get on the Pros.
I'm not gonna lie; it kind of makes me appreciate what Apple's able to pull off with how thin this is.
But if we're just comparing them, this definitely sounds better.
Now, with a matte screen, the maintenance is looks a little bit different.
I feel like we can all get away with a bit of a rub on the shirt, and then your screen looks pretty clean with this nano texture.
It's going to take a little bit more than that, especially if you're somebody with oily fingers or you like to use lotion.
That means sometimes you might need a little bit of a spray from some cleaning solution to truly get some of the buildup out of there.
But I say all that to say maintenance is going to be way easier on this guy compared to this.
So something to keep in mind.
Make sure you get Apple Care on that because the price to repair that the inner screen is a thousand dollars.
Nine ninety nine, else?
I think it's a thousand four hundred or something like that.
Get that AppleCare, y'all, because that's one of these.
To repair one of these, this phone actually fell from the second story of our house.
I did have a case on it, thankfully, but the case popped off.
And when I got to it, we were looking okay.
So I mean, it feels pretty durable to me, even with the case.
It does have Apple's grade five titanium for the frame as well as the hinge, and it also has like the ceramic shield too.
So all the things that you kind of expect from the Pro models.
I mean, this is aluminum now in comparison.
So we've got like a stronger frame on this than this guy, and it's also IP sixty eight water and dust resistant.
So like those are really good ratings.
I wouldn't like try to have it open and you know start being really loosey goosey with it.
I still feel like when it's open, I gotta be a little bit more careful.
You know, I feel like the screen would handle a fall better than this would.
Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing.
Right?
Because unless it falls on its face.
Then yeah, the corner hits are no joke.
But we've got like this whole other layer that kind of feels like a bumper for that screen.
I'm not saying this is a more durable phone, just that I wouldn't worry more with this than I would with this.
Although I think that price tag kind of makes you feel a little bit differently.
But also, not wanting to bend this thing back when it's open.
I'll leave that up to Zach to figure out how that works.
That's the only thing I would think about when it comes to durability.
But for me, feels like they're on equal playing fields.
Another big question is about battery.
I will say, shockingly, I feel like I'm getting as much battery out of this guy as I do the 18 Pro Max.
So the 18 Pro Max is said to have like the best battery on an iPhone ever.
From my testing, it's been really good.
Like I can go all day without needing to charge.
What's your experience been like, Oscar?
It's been amazing with the Pro Max.
Pro Max
To say that that has lasted you as long as that is wild to me.
Like I can go to bed without having charged it all day, I think maybe this might be slightly better.
And Apple has like this new metric where they talk about like real world use or this like everyday use.
They rate this for 24 hours, and I find that to be true because, like I said, I wake up, use the phone all day.
By the time I'm ready to go to bed, that's when I need to charge it.
This guy is rated for 30 hours, so it's like still both in the realm of just like all day use.
But for me, by the time I need to go to bed, this will be maybe 10, 15 percent, something like that.
And this guy will probably have a bit more than that.
So I'm really, really impressed here.
So I feel like a lot of the places where foldables typically fall short, Apple did a really good job at making sure the gap wasn't too crazy compared to the Pro models.
These are definitely better in some regards, especially the Pro Max, like the battery life, the camera system, even the speakers.
But this guy definitely shakes things up and gives you a completely different experience, especially when it comes to like the two screens, applications.
So it is a Truly different vibe over on the Duo, but there are some things that I also I'm not too crazy about.
Face ID being one of them.
I've always been a lover of Touch ID, and I didn't think it'd be an issue on the Duo, but it behaves so differently than the Touch IDs of the past.
On the iPad Mini, when you unlock it, you unlock it and go straight to the home screen.
With the Duo, because it doesn't have Face ID, you have to like leave it on here a little bit longer in order for you to get to the home screen.
So it feels a little bit slower, but that's also intentional because with Face ID, sometimes you just want to
check your notifications, and that first little unlock will let all your notifications expand.
Whereas with Touch ID, if you want to check your notifications, in order to do that, you have to first unlock and you get your expanded notifications, then you have to let it stay there a little bit longer
to actually get inside of the home screen.
It feels like it takes a little bit longer.
So there's actually a setting for that rest finger to open, and that's to get to the home screen without that feature.
you simply unlock the phone and then you have to swipe up.
It's just a longer process to get inside, so it's it's unfortunate, but it is something I feel like I have to get used to.
I was a believer before, but I do think Face ID is better.
I believed in you.
I was rooting for you.
You know we got to talk cameras now.
With the Duo, we've got two lenses.
Duo
We've got your forty-eight megapixel wide-angle lens and a forty-eight megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens.
Now some people might not love that.
I personally like having an ultra-wide instead of the telephoto lens, but I think concert goers really love that telephoto lens compared to the Pro.
You've got a forty-eight megapixel wide-angle, forty-eight megapixel ultra-wide, and a forty-eight megapixel telephoto.
You've got the full lineup over here.
If you want access to all of the things, Pro is definitely going to be the better option.
But the forty-eight megapixel wide-angle lens is slightly different compared to the one on the eighteen Pro.
It's a little bit more zoomed in.
Let me actually show you guys what it looks like, and you tell me what you think.
I'll go ahead.
and throw it up on the screen so you guys let me know which one you think looks better or if there's even a real big difference.
I think Apple maybe wanted a tighter lens on this guy because of the lack of the telephoto lens.
Apple didn't say that, but it's my assumption.
Apple
And I really do think, even though the focal length might be different on the two phones, that the Duo produces some really quality shots, even with video.
They both look really, really good.
And when it comes to the ultra wide, they share the exact same lens, so there won't be a difference.
And we already know there's no telephoto.
Now, when it comes to the selfie cameras, I'll throw that up on the screen as well so you guys can see.
Now, something the Duo has going for it is that it is capable of taking way better selfies
than your Pro because you do have access to the main camera lens for all of your shots.
You can just open up the Duo and do it like this.
Duo
Although I will say it is a little bit awkward, kind of hold it the right way, but I mean it's doable.
But I mean, like you can get some really clean selfies because you got the two big lenses over there, and you can go wide and get way more people in the shot.
Just don't try to do it with this one.
They call it a FaceTime camera.
You're doing a FaceTime Duo call where you've got multiple people having a conversation.
That's a cool feature, and that's the only time it's okay to use this.
This is right up there with tablet cameras.
Don't do it.
Don't do it.
But what if you want to shoot in log?
I'm glad you asked.
That is a pro feature.
You're not going to be able to shoot on log with the Duo.
This does a surprisingly good job.
I'm glad Apple didn't skimp.
Apple
Set that telephoto lens.
Just give it to us, somebody.
One company has to give us all of the lenses.
And the only other thing is MagSafe accessories.
Depending on what kind of MagSafe accessories you buy, if they're meant to fit like the longer body, they can be a little bit awkward on the Duo because it's so much shorter.
MagSafe accessories work on both, but some are definitely made with these guys in mind—that longer body—and they just don't really work out over here.
But aside from that.
do I feel like the duo is worth the extra money over what you would pay for the pro?
It ultimately depends.
Like, do you want the different app experience that you get with the duo, whether it's the bigger screen or just like having
that folded mode where you have access to maybe some extra controls, or even the multitasking where you can have multiple apps open at the same time?
The software experience is genuinely pretty different on this side of things.
If you're really into your entertainment and maybe productivity, I think there could be some real arguments made for this experience.
Maybe you might just be somebody who wants something fresh.
I think this absolutely delivers on it.
I can see this being a phone that you hold on to for a few years.
I feel like I'm sold.
If I weren't a creator, I think I'd want this phone over this.
But because I'm a creator, I can't let this go, and that's why they made handoff so I can just pick whichever one I need for the day.
But I do see myself dialing this a little bit more.
So my opinion, I think it's worth it.
It's a really fresh experience.
256 gigs, though, not the number that I would want for my storage.
So it might even be a little bit more than $800.
But you can also play it safe and wait for the next generation.
There's clearly demand for this, so Apple should be working on a second one.
But yeah, let me know what you guys think.
Based on everything we talked about today, are you going to pick up the Duo?
Let me know with a comment down below.
I'll catch you guys in the next one.
Peace.
