Hello, my friends.
Welcome back to English unleashed.
Today, I want to talk about an idea that may sound a little strange at first.
Discipline can give you more freedom.
Usually, when we hear the word discipline, we think about rules.
We think about doing things when we do not want to do them.
We think about waking up early, working hard, exercising, studying, or following a plan.
And freedom sounds like the opposite.
Freedom sounds like doing what you want, no rules, no schedules, and no one telling you what to do.
So, how can discipline possibly give us freedom?
To understand this, imagine two different people.
The first person does things only when they feel like doing them.
If they feel motivated, they work.
If they feel tired, they stop.
If something more interesting appears, they change their plans.
The second person has a few simple rules.
They know what is important to them, and they regularly make time for those things.
At first, the first person may look freer, but after a few months, something interesting can happen.
The second person may actually have more choices.
Why?
Because discipline creates results, and results often create freedom.
Think about money.
If you spend every bit of money you have because you want complete freedom today, you may have fewer choices tomorrow.
But if you regularly save some money, you are limiting yourself a little today.
You cannot buy everything you want.
However, later that money may give you choices.
You may be able to travel.
You may be able to leave a job you dislike.
You may be able to deal with an unexpected problem without worrying too much.
A small limit today can create more freedom tomorrow.
The same idea can be applied to many areas of life, and language learning is a very good example.
Imagine you want to learn English.
You decide that you are going to practice whenever you have time.
That sounds reasonable, but there is a problem.
We rarely find extra time.
There is always something else to do.
We have work.
You have family responsibilities.
You have messages to answer.
There is another video to watch.
You are tired.
Tomorrow looks like a better day to start.
So, a week passes, and then another week.
You still want to improve your English, but very little has actually happened.
Now, imagine that you make one simple decision.
Every evening, you will spend twenty minutes with English, not two hours, not an enormous study session, just twenty minutes.
Some evenings you will feel motivated.
Some evenings you will not.
But the decision has already been made.
You do not need to ask yourself every day, "Should I study today?
" That question is gone, and strangely, that can feel freeing.
You no longer have to negotiate with yourself.
You no longer need to wait for the perfect mood.
You simply know what you are going to do.
This is one of the less obvious benefits of discipline.
Discipline reduces the number of decisions you have to make, and making decisions takes mental energy.
Think about what happens when you do not have a clear routine.
Should I study now?
Maybe later.
What should I study?
Vocabulary, grammar, listening.
Maybe I should watch a video.
Actually, perhaps I should find a new app.
Now, which app?
Maybe I should search online first.
Twenty minutes later, you are still deciding how to study.
Sometimes the problem is not a lack of time.
The problem is that too much energy is spent on deciding what to do.
A simple routine removes some of those decisions.
You might decide, for example, that you listen to English for 15 minutes in the morning.
That is your routine.
You can still choose what you listen to.
You still have freedom inside the routine, but the basic decision has already been made.
This is important because discipline does not have to mean controlling every minute of your life.
Good discipline is often quite simple.
It means deciding what matters and giving it a regular place in your life.
There is another way discipline creates freedom in language learning.
It slowly gives you the freedom to communicate.
Think about a beginner learning English.
At the beginning, many situations are difficult.
Perhaps they cannot understand a movie without subtitles.
They cannot easily have a conversation.
Travel can be stressful.
Speaking on the phone can be difficult.
Reading information online takes a long time.
Maybe they want to study or work internationally, but their English is not strong enough yet.
Their choices are limited.
Now imagine that person studies consistently for several years, not perfectly, not every day of their life, but regularly.
They listen.
They read.
They speak.
They learn vocabulary.
Slowly, English becomes easier.
Then one day, they can have that conversation.
They can watch that movie.
They can understand that website.
They can speak to someone from another country.
They can apply for an opportunity that requires English, and that is freedom.
So instead of asking, "Do I feel motivated to study English today?
" you can ask a much simpler question: What is my small English habit today?
Maybe it is listening to one short podcast.
Maybe it is reading for 10 minutes.
Maybe it is speaking to yourself for five minutes.
Maybe it is reviewing a few words you learned yesterday.
The exact activity matters less than the regular return to English.
Because every time you return, you are building something.
Your vocabulary grows, your listening becomes stronger, sentences become easier to understand.
You hesitate a little less.
You recognize things more quickly, and eventually, something interesting happens.
The thing that once required discipline begins to feel normal.
You no longer have to push yourself so much.
English has become part of your life, and this brings us to the idea that we started with: freedom does not always mean doing whatever you want in this moment.
Sometimes, real freedom means having more choices in the future.
The freedom to communicate, the freedom to travel more comfortably, the freedom to meet people from different parts of the world, the freedom to study something that was once unavailable to you, the freedom to apply for a different job, the freedom to understand a conversation without asking someone to translate it, the freedom to express your personality in another language.
Those freedoms are valuable, but they have a price.
Not a huge price, not endless hours of painful study.
Often, the price is simply showing up regularly.
Twenty minutes today, another twenty minutes tomorrow, a little listening, a little reading, a little speaking, again and again.
At first, discipline can feel like a restriction.
Later, you may realize that it was opening doors.
Thank you so much for listening to another episode of English unleashed.
「English Unleashed」
Until next time, keep learning, keep moving forward, and keep believing in yourself.
Bye for now.
