Little far.
Second star to the right, and then straight on till morning.
That was how Peter had described the way to the island of Neverland.
But these directions were not very exact, and the children had no map.
They were depending on Peter to guide them there.
At first, they were excited as he led them through the clouds.
They flew over tree tops, made rings around tall buildings, and dipped close to the waves in the sea.
From the sky, the world looked very different, and their eyes delighted in everything.
Follow me, Peter commanded.
He used his best captain's voice.
But Peter was a little too daring.
He flew a little too close to the trees, just missing their branches.
He flew a little too close to the water, touching every shark's tail.
As the children flew with Peter, night became day, light became dark.
Then it became light, then dark again.
The moon and the sun took turns trading places.
The children followed Peter bravely.
But the excitement of flying started to wear off.
The children became hungry and cold.
They also became sleepy, and this was dangerous.
In order to fly, they had to remain awake.
When Michael suddenly nodded off, he began to fall.
There he goes, down, down, down!
Peter laughed.
He thought this was hilarious, but Wendy was alarmed.
Peter caught Michael just before he fell into the sea.
When he saw how upset Wendy was, he taught the children how to rest on a cloud.
Peter flew much faster than the others.
Sometimes he would fly out of sight for a while.
He had secret adventures on his own.
He would come back talking about a star or a fairy he had met.
When he was out on an adventure, Wendy worried that he might forget them all together.
What would we do if Peter were to leave us?
Asked John.
Well, we would have to go on.
We don't know how to stop.
Replied Wendy, trying to sound brave.
This was true.
Peter had not shown them how to stop flying.
Soon they lost track of time.
How long had they been traveling?
Would they ever arrive in Neverland?
The children wondered whether they had lost their way.
Finally, they saw an island in the distance.
The island seemed to be calling to them.
It was all very new and strange, yet somehow familiar at the same time.
There it is," said Peter.
"Where all the arrows are pointing." He was right.
A hundred golden arrows, sent by the setting sun, pointed to the magic shore of Neverland.
Night was approaching.
The sun wanted to make sure they found their way safely.
The children looked down below.
They could see splashes of color everywhere.
Purple mountains stood behind dark green forests.
Rivers and lakes ran through the green land like blue veins.
Red coral reefs accented the color of the water.
Flowers and bushes in brilliant shades dotted the landscape of Neverland.
Strangely, the children immediately recognized the island.
Below them, they each saw landscape from their own dreams.
John saw his lake with flamingos.
Michael saw his cave with a river running through it.
And Wendy saw Mermaid Lagoon, just as she had often dreamed of it.
In the nursery, Neverland had been make-believe, part of a dream world.
Now that they were here, it was all very real.
The sun's golden arrows disappeared.
The sky became dark.
Night was falling on Neverland, and suddenly the children were frightened.
There were no nursery nightlights to keep them safe.
Nana wasn't standing guard beside them.
Still flying, they all moved closer to Peter.
Suddenly, Peter was not as carefree as he had been.
He was now on the alert.
He looked down in the growing darkness and pointed to the smoke rising from a campfire below.
"See that smoke?
It comes from the camp of the Indians just across the mysterious river," Peter explained to the children.
"Those are smoke signals.
They're on the warpath.
And look," he said, pointing to another part of the island.
"There are the pirates getting ready to shoot their cannon called Long Tom at Execution Dock.
We need to be on our guard." With this, Peter sent Tinkerbell up front to lead the way.
Her glow provided enough light for everyone to see each other and the land below.
All had been quiet in Neverland while Peter was gone.
When Peter was not there, life on the island was always more peaceful.
The fairies and mermaids even took an extra hour to get up in the morning.
Rather than fighting, the pirates and the Lost Boys just made faces at each other when they met.
The Indians planted their corn, and the wild animals looked after their young.
But when Peter arrived, the action began.
Peter told the children about the pirates and their ship, the Jolly Roger.
Their eyes lit up when he talked about the pirates' wicked leader, Captain Hook.
The children had heard of him and his evil reputation.
Michael began to cry.
John asked, "Is he as mean and as big as they say?
" "Well, he's a bit smaller now," replied Peter.
"Because I cut off his right hand, then he can't fight," replied Michael hopefully.
"Oh no, he can fight.
He's as fierce as ever.
But now he has an iron hook instead of a right hand.
In fact, he's been known to claw people to death with that hook." "Well, I wonder what it would be like to meet him," said John.
He was almost looking forward to a pirate adventure.
"Not me.
I would be too scared," cried Michael.
"As captain, there is one thing I demand of each boy who serves under me," said Peter.
"If we meet Hook in a fight, you must leave him to me." "I say," replied both boys.
"But right now we aren't ready for a fight," Peter declared.
"Let's get out of sight.
The pirates might already have seen us because of Tinker Bell's light." "Turn out our light!
" The children cried in unison.
"Her light only goes out when she is asleep," said Peter.
"But we can put her in John's top hat." When Tinker Bell thought Peter would carry the hat, she agreed happily.
But when Peter gave the hat to Wendy, Tink was upset.
After thinking about it, the fairy decided not to make a fuss—at least not just yet.
With Tinker Bell in the hat, the group's shouting Mike was gone.
They flew on in complete silence.
Suddenly, Peter and the children became enveloped in a ghostly stillness.
If only something would make a sound," sighed Michael.
As if to answer Michael's wish, there was a huge boom.
The pirates had fired long tom into the sky.
The cannon's roar echoed through the mountains and sent the group flying in different directions.
No one was hit, but Peter was thrown far out to sea.
Wendy was blown upward.
She still held John's hat with Tinker Bell in it.
Tinker Bell wasn't a bad fairy.
Sometimes she was really good.
But at this moment, she was bad.
She hated Wendy because she was jealous of Wendy's feelings for Peter.
It would have been better for Wendy if she had dropped the hat.
But Wendy would never have let go.
After the cannon blast.
Tinkerbell popped out of the hat and tinkled something in fairy language.
Wendy did not understand.
She assumed the fairy was saying, "Follow me." What else could Wendy do?
She followed.
