Perfect timing.
Let's dive in.
Okay, Leo.
Let's start from the very basics.
In the IELTS speaking test, part one is often about personal topics, and hobbies is one of the most common topics.
The examiner might ask something very simple, like, Do you have any hobbies?
What would you say?
Well, I would probably say yes.
I have a few hobbies.
I enjoy painting and hiking.
Good start.
But in IELTS, you want to give a slightly longer answer than just that.
You don't want to say only one sentence, but you also don't want to talk for five minutes.
The sweet spot is two to four sentences for part one answers.
So I should add a little more detail.
Exactly.
You can say yes.
I have a few hobbies.
I enjoy painting and hiking.

I started painting about three months ago, and I find it very relaxing.
I also hike on weekends when the weather is nice.
Oh, that's much better.
It gives more information and sounds more natural.
Right.
And notice the structure: you state your hobby, you say when you started or how often you do it, and you say how it makes you feel.
This is a very simple but effective formula.
State time feeling.
That's easy to remember.
Yes.
はい。
And another common opening phrase is, "
One of my hobbies is," or "I'm really into," or "I spent a lot of my free time."
These are all natural ways to introduce a hobby.
What does "I'm really into" mean?

"I'm really into hiking." That sounds good.
It does.
You can also say "I'm passionate about" for something more formal, or I have a strong interest in.
もっとフォーマルには「I'm passionate about」や「I have a strong interest in」と言うこともできます。
These are better for the IELTS context because they sound more sophisticated.
What about if I have a lot of hobbies?
Should I list all of them?
No, don't list everything.
Choose one or two main hobbies and talk about them in depth.
It's better to say a lot about one thing than to quickly mention ten things.
That's good advice.
Quality over quantity.
Exactly.
Now let's talk about how to describe when and how often you do your hobby.
The examiner might ask, "How often do you do this?
" What frequency phrases can I use?
Well, I know every day and sometimes and on weekends.
ええと、every day と sometimes と on weekends は知っています。

Let's expand those.

"I do it a few times a week." "I usually do it on weekends." "I try to practice at least twice a week." Or I do it whenever I have free time.

That last one is honest and relatable.
I don't do it as often as I'd like.
I really like that phrase.
It's very natural.

It is, and it shows the examiner that you have a vocabulary for expressing desire and reality.
It's a more advanced phrasing.
What about describing where you do the hobby?

I do it outdoors, usually in the park.
I take classes at a studio downtown.
So you're building a picture for the examiner.
Yes, exactly.
The more specific you are, the more interesting and natural your answer sounds.
Vague answers score lower in IELTS.
detailed answers score higher.
