Well, in this video, I want to share a specific technique that will help you to work on how you sound.

And these are skills that you can practice any time, even if you don't have anyone to speak with.

You can use this technique to practice on your own to build speaking skills alone.

Years ago, I started creating a series of practice videos that I called the imitation technique.

Now, you might have practiced with some of these before, but this is my own specific sequence that trains your ears and your mouth

The imitation technique is step by step.

It's designed so that each section builds on the previous one.

Lots of people jump straight into shadowing a movie or a TV show while they're watching it.

But if you just switch on the telly and just start shadowing people, it can be really frustrating trying to keep up.

You can get tongue-tied.

Really easily, you can lose the meaning of the context, and it all starts to feel a little bit pointless.

Like, why am I doing this?

And so you switch it off.

The imitation technique builds gradually, one step on top of the other, and this is really important.

Step one is just about listening and reading the words on screen, so you're getting comfortable with the topic,

In step two,

you get to repeat after me, line by line, with a pause where you can practice, and this helps to break everything down into chunks.

During this part of the practice, you can slow the speed of the video down.

So it can be a bit slower as you practice.

You can repeat step two again and again until you feel comfortable with what you need to say,

Once you know the context, once you've practiced some of the unfamiliar words, you've said them out loud.

When you're shadowing someone, you're speaking at the same time as them, right?

You're listening and speaking almost at the same time.

So now, instead of focusing on how to pronounce these words really quickly and jump from thing to thing,

you're focusing on the natural rhythm and the flow.

So the progression through these three steps is really important to help build your skill set as you go,

and also the repetition is helpful for retaining new vocabulary or retaining sounds, muscle movements, All of those things.

Shadowing trains your mouth with your ears, not your eyes.

You probably learned English by reading first, right?

You saw the words written on the page, and then you began sounding them out, maybe in your head, maybe trying to make the sounds yourself.

Now, by now, you know that there's a big problem with this because English is not phonetic.

But when you shadow a native speaker, you're not going to guess.

You're going to hear exactly how the word sounds.

Plus, you're going to hear lots of natural reductions and contractions as they speak.

So, with your ears in charge, you're going to train your mouth muscles to produce those sounds as naturally as possible as you speak.

Natural pronunciation is about much more than just sounds.

And shadowing helps you to practice natural rhythm, pace, and pause, even facial expressions.

And these aspects of your spoken English are just as important as producing the correct sound.

Imagine it like Singing your favorite song, you can't just read the lyrics and then know how to sing it, right?

You have to feel where the beat falls, where the emotion is, and shadowing helps you to do all of this.

Another really great thing about shadowing is that you can't think about anything else while you're doing it.

Although I didn't realize it when I created my very first imitation lesson,

There's so much to love about this technique.

For me, this is the best part about the imitation technique.

It is a tiny habit That you can actually stick to, ten minutes, fifteen minutes every day or every other day.

Everyone can find just ten minutes a day to practice speaking and building fluency into their spoken English.
