Africa is my home.
When I explore it, I find it filled with hope, with treasures, with wildlife, with biodiversity.
It's because of its extraordinary resilience.
It's hard not to be motivated by hope.
Africa is where we all come from.
It is linked to human evolution, and very much linked to who I am, as seventh generation African.
I've spent my life exploring the wildest places across the continent.
It's my home, a place where I've been to all of the countries, looking for wildlife, looking for wild places, looking for butterflies, looking for elephants, and you always find them.
It just takes to spend long enough looking for them.
You know, it really was a parrot that guided me into this journey of exploring Africa's rivers.
Little brown and turquoise parrot, called the mayor's parrot, in the Okavango.
That's where I learnt the discipline of transect science, recording everything I possibly could about this little parrot.
If it ate a tree, I learnt everything about that tree, about that habitat type, about the channels associated.
I followed the parrots into the the the the remotest islands of the Okavango Delta.
It's just wow, yeah, it's vast wetland, and animals, elephants everywhere.
Yeah, I lost myself completely there.
And then in 2006, I was fresh out of water.
I was writing up my PhD at Berkeley in San Francisco.
I missed Africa, and Jane Goodall came to give a talk.
Together we can save the world.
It felt like a bit of Africa came to California.
I read all of her books, and it really became a model for my science communication.
She took on a calling to.
Get out there, make this about everyone.
Inspire, have those spark moments that Rolex supports so well.
She's an example to us.
My first interaction with Rolex, I had done my second expedition after chemotherapy in 2021.
I was diagnosed with colon cancer.
I thought I was going to die, and I came out of that, and it's like, what are we going to do?
We decided to do 200 expeditions over eight years, and that is what Rolex is supporting in its perpetual planet initiative.
Our mission is to protect 1.2 million square kilometers of African watersheds, water towers, source the resilience of the continent to the long-term impacts of climate change.
My approach to conservation is you go to the source.
Think we're getting close.
Just on ya.
This it.
The source of the Nile, the longest river in Africa.
I have explored tens of thousands of miles of African river.
Anywhere I've gone in Africa, you find the most extraordinary things: hundreds of new species to science.
They're everywhere.
There's so much still to discover, and so much to give us up.
That's core to our work: is using animals that you can see in the landscape as indicators for a cascade throughout the ecosystem.
And you know, when we find that resilience, we find that healthy system.
We celebrate it.
Good.
よし。
Hey, Manuel.
Yeah.
Come fairly hard.
What we do inspires local engagement.
People are drawn to rivers.
This is you know gone from being a project to a movement across Africa for our rivers.
That is my life.
That has become my life.
And you know, the places you'll see in this series are places that I've been, places that I love, places that give my life meaning.
