(upbeat music) - Well, good morning, and welcome back to This Old House.
There's a lot going on here today.
Hey, Roger.
- Hey, Norm.
- Some bluestone has arrived, so Roger can continue with the hardscaping out in the back yard, and Tommy is gonna start installing trim on that detailed porch that he's been working on.
Now, it's been a while since we've been paid a visit by our favorite preservation plasterer Rory Brennan, he's hard to get on the schedule, but he's here today and he's gonna give us some of his tips up on the third floor.
Now last time we were here, we had just started preparation for the exterior painting, there was a lot of discussion and deliberation about colors.
Remember, we had that dark green shingle look, the house was known as the green monster, but not anymore, take a look at this.
Final paint has been installed on the second floor.
A nice, soft pallette of colors, appropriate for a shingle-style house, yet all the details really stand out.
(upbeat music) A beautiful look out here, there's a lot going on inside.
- Well, the transformation here in the back yard is really starting to come together.
Roger's bluestone stairs are in place.
Now, it's still an active job site, so we're protecting them, we don't want the edges to get chipped, but I think I could walk up 'em, and as you ascend these, it brings you to a bluestone patio, and this is gonna be a real destination for the family.
There'll be a grill out here, a big table, and some benches so folks can congregate for a lunch or dinner.
And as you stand here on the new patio, you can start to see the transformation here in the back of the house.
Now, a few months ago, well, it was just a big green wall with a plate glass window stuck in the middle, but now you are starting to get a sense as to how the back of the house is gonna be one of the strongest statements of this house's classic shingle style, the way the shingles wrap all the way around the porch.
And look at this post, a couple of Tommy's guys have spent well over a week working on all of this beautiful hand-detailing, the flare down here at the bottom, and these shingles, the way they are woven into each other on the corners.
This is western red cedar, and this also is the same material that Tommy's guys are working on on the top of the porch.
Tommy, that shingle detail out back looks great.
- Doesn't it look great?
But it's not only about the shingle detail on this house, Kevin, it's also about the trim detail, it's very important.
- So what are we working with here?
- Well, let's start out right here, this ceiling is a V-groove ceiling, the crown, and this board right here is called a frieze board, and there's a little astragal trim that's added right on for detail.
But look at the way that the window flows right into this frieze board.
- [Kevin] So definitely a little extra work there, what if you didn't use the frieze board?
- Well, you could put on a couple of rows of shingles, but you know, it just wouldn't look right with this house.
- So we're replicating the shingle details, are we gonna replicate this detail as well?
- Absolutely, let me show you what we're doing out back.
- So for the new work, it's western red cedar, same species as the shingles?
- Same species, it's a great product to use outside, it paints well and it holds up to the weather.
- Okay, so let's see how you're replicating the trim back here.
Is this the beginnings of the frieze board?
- [Tommy] This board right here is the beginning of the frieze board, it lines up with this beam, right on the bottom here.
It's on a filler so we can get our shingles up and back, making a nice, watertight joint.
- [Kevin] And it also makes it proud here around the casing of the door, so that's gonna let us get that detail where we set the trim in?
- Right, now here's a piece of trim detail that matches the other side we made.
- [Kevin] Is that also western red?
- This is western red cedar.
And it's gonna sit right in there, sitting flush with the frieze board, and it's gonna run all the way around our bay window, framing the bay.
- [Kevin] Well, and I already know what it's gonna look like 'cause it's the same detail out front, that's awesome.
- Right, now here's another detail that we like to do, Kevin.
To make the door jam and the casing watertight, what we do is we cut in a rabbeted joint right here.
So when we apply this trim, it will sit on the surface of the jam.
- So it actually overlaps this door right here?
- [Tommy] Right, but before this goes on, a bead of caulking is run in here, and that gets squeezed in there making that joint even more watertight.
- Well, that's a detail I had missed, it just sorta looks very natural right here.
- [Tommy] Right, so that the water doesn't leak into the joint between the side casing and the head casing, we rabbet the two and lock 'em together with another bead of caulking behind that.
- So, on the door, it looks like just a simple butt joint, but there's actually a lot going on beneath there?
- [Tommy] Making it watertight (chuckles) is a lotta work.
- Is it overkill though, Tommy?
I mean, we're underneath a covered porch.
- But we're still outside, and I have to worry about wind-driven rain getting into any of those joints.
- All right, fair enough.
Well, I cannot wait to see it all up and painted, thanks, Tom.
(upbeat music) - Up here on the third floor, you'll barely recognize the billiard room with the tired, dark wallpaper removed, and underneath that, we find the original plaster, which needs a little bit of attention, so we've brought in plaster preservationist Rory Brennan.
Hey, Rory.
- Norm, how are you?
- Good, what do you think of the plaster in this room?
- In this room, it can be saved, it's in good shape.
- That's good news.
- There are cracks, typical of houses of this age.
- Right, well, the house shifts around with a lot of movement, and the plaster tends to break away from that wood lath that's underneath.
- Yes, the movement causes the plaster in the back to break, causes it to come loose from the lath.
Typically, what people would do to fix that would be to use sealing buttons and screws.
- [Norm] So that secures the plaster to the wood lath?
- [Rory] That secures the plaster, absolutely.
And mesh tape to cover the crack.
- Right, but then you have to put compound over that to cover the tape and the washers, and that can leave a bump in the wall, and you might not wanna have that, but you got a better system, right?
- Yeah, that bump is really hard to hide, there's a lot of material on surface, this particular system leaves nothing on the surface.
What we do is we drill holes to inject the adhesive in between the plaster and the lath.
- [Norm] Oh, so you're gluing the plaster to the wood lath again?
- Absolutely.
Then what we do is we take these screws and washers and temporarily clamp the plaster to the lath until the adhesive sets.
We pull out these clamps, then what we do is we put a thin layer of joint compound over, filling the holes and the crack, we don't wanna rake the crack out, just a thin layer over it, and it's just like new.
- Nice, smooth plane.
Well, let's fix this one.
- [Norm] Where do you drill the holes?
- [Rory] We're drilling holes through the plaster looking for the lath.
- [Norm] So when you inject the glue, you'll have something to glue the plaster to, that being the lath?
- [Rory] Exactly.
(vacuum powers on) - [Norm] So now we can apply the adhesive?
- Not quite yet.
Before we can apply the adhesive, we have to inject this conditioner to prepare the surfaces.
And now we're ready for the adhesive.
- [Norm] Oh, so you squeeze it in til it comes right out through the crack?
- [Rory] Yes, we're gluing the crack back together.
This crack will never open up again.
Now we wipe off the excess adhesive and apply our clamps.
- [Norm] So how long do you leave the clamps on?
- [Rory] We'd leave these clamps in for 24 hours.
Then we remove them, we take these out, we'll put joint compound over the whole thing, and it looks just like this, smooth and flat as the day it was done.
- [Norm] Now over here, the plaster has fallen away near the corner bead.
Today, we use these metal corner beads which give us a nice, crisp corner.
I like the rounded corner, but we have to repair that plaster, how are we gonna do that?
- We're going to fill these voids with a plaster mixture to bring it into the same shape as the original.
- [Norm] So you're filling the entire void between the plaster and the wooden bead?
- Yes, I'm going to let it set up a little bit before I cut it back, so it looks just like it did originally.
Now that the plaster has set up a little bit, we're gonna cut it back to the way it was originally.
- [Norm] What's that tool?
- [Rory] This is called a miter rung, and you use it for cutting back plaster when it has to be done just right.
- [Norm] So you don't want it to set up too much, otherwise you won't be able to cut it back with that tool?
- Absolutely.
This is the way it was done when this house was built 100 years ago.
- [Norm] And it's really a chamfer, nice detail.
So after the plaster dries, the painter will come along and sand everything and give it a coat of primer and paint, it's gonna look great.
- It's gonna look beautiful, Norm.
(upbeat music) - Nice job.
- Thank you.
- While there was some deliberation what the outside of this house should look like, that was not the case on the inside.
Our interior designer, Abbey Koplovitz, has been working with us pretty much from the beginning of the job, Abbey, good to see you again.
- Nice to see you too.
- And if I understand this correctly, you and Maddy were actually working together before you even closed on the house?
- This is true.
- All right, well, you've had plenty of time to digest this house, to understand it, what do you think?
- Well, my first impression of the home was what a grand and beautiful staircase, all this beautiful oak millwork, it's gorgeous.
- [Kevin] Yeah, it really is.
- [Abbey] But you know, Kevin, and also, it also creates some design challenges.
- Such as?
- Well, it gobbles up a lotta light.
- Hey, you're right, you know, it was a very dark entry hall here, and with the wallpaper off, which was dark itself, now that we're down to the raw plaster here, it really does lighten it up, you can see the potential.
- What a difference it makes, and at the top of the staircase is the beautiful stained glass window.
- [Kevin] Well, we pulled that out at the beginning of job to protect it.
It's off getting restored right now, and I can't wait to see it back in its opening.
- I know, I can't wait to see it either.
You know, we used the stained glass window to inform the color choices of the hallway.
So, in here we chose a nice, soft, muted olive tone for our wall color, we think that's gonna look great with the staircase.
- [Kevin] Well, and it's certainly gonna lighten this place up a lot.
- That's right.
- And it looks like you've given some thought to lighting as well?
- Yes, I have a beautiful candelabra sconce, which we're gonna put one here and one further up the staircase, and what a candelabra sconce does is it adds a beautiful, beautiful, soft flickering light, sort of like candlelight.
- [Kevin] So just an accent?
- That's right.
- [Maddy] We also decided to lighten up this staircase with the use of a runner, and originally, we decided on a very light-colored runner because it really did look lovely, but the thought of two boys and some pets running up (Kevin chuckles) and down it made us darken our color a bit, but still matches the paint and the stained glass window as well.
- All right, well, it's gotta pass the kid test.
- Exactly.
- so if the challenge here in the front entry hall was to sort of lighten it up, what was the challenge here, in what used to be the parlor, in the front of the house?
- Well, we wanted to do two things in this room, which actually, Kevin, we're calling the living room now.
Well, we wanted to give it a wow factor so that it matches the beauty of the entryway.
- 'Cause you're gonna see it from the entryway?
- You're gonna see it when you walk through, but we also wanted to make it comfortable for everyday use.
- And I suspect you wanted to lighten up as well, I mean, this is a very deep, dark red, and we've got the stained wood here.
- Well, the stained wood is gonna stay but the red isn't, and what we've chosen in here is a nice, light, bluish-grayish color, will really lighten up the room.
You know, you don't get a lotta light in here because of the overhangs from the porch.
- [Maddy] These neutral colors that we're going to use on the couches, and the pillows, and even the curtains are also gonna make the room feel lighter and more elegant.
- So lots of light colors, what about the furnishings?
Always a tough challenge, you know, you've got built-in bookcases on some walls, low windows on other walls, where do you put the couches, and the tables, and such?
- Well, actually, Kevin, you're standing on top of one of the loveseats.
- Oh, so you've got 'em taped out here, so it looks like a loveseat, what, a coffee table?
- Coffee table in the center.
- And?
- And another loveseat on the other side, just like we have here, diagrammed on the floor plan.
- [Kevin] So bay window in the back here?
- [Abbey] We're gonna add a little upholstered bench and some end tables.
- [Kevin] Got you, so you actually pulled the furniture in around and away from the walls so you don't run into those challenges?
- [Abbey] Exactly, we're gonna float the furniture in the middle of the room.
- [Kevin] Great, good tip, and I like using the tape too.
- Abbey's taping saved us, actually, a lot of, probably, money and time in the long-run.
We had planned initially on using 84-inch couches, they were just too big for the room, you would not be able to get around the edges, and so we changed them to loveseats.
- Okay, so that room spills into a dining room.
- A formal dining room, correct.
- Formal, that's what you're going with?
- Exactly.
We have some antiques that we wanted to use to inspire us, these are from our previous home, antique French sconces and a French table that Abbey and I used in our previous home.
- [Kevin] Wow, so this is a table you already own right here, rectangular, very beautiful table, and I can tell from the floor you've taped out what looks like at least one, maybe two tables?
- [Abbey] Well, it's actually one table, Kevin, but Maddy thought that she would want it running parallel to the fireplace.
- And why not, it's such a beautiful fireplace.
- Yeah, well, why not is a good question, but what I've found is that sometimes what people think they want and how they use their space is two different things, so we also decided to tape it out on a square, so that we could make sure that you could have appropriate flow around the room regardless of how you place the table.
And that X in the middle of the floor is where the pendant will hang from the ceiling to make sure that our light fixture would also work in this space.
- So we can actually make that decision on moving day?
- Exactly.
- Good deal, all right, off of the dining room into the family room, and, Maddy, if I recall correctly, this is a family room because it had a wall big enough for a TV?
(chuckles) - Well, that was my husband's reason to have this be the family room, it does have the best wall for a television, but it's also off the kitchen, and that's very important to me.
- Sort of connect the two rooms, it is how we live our lives today, with that connection between sort of the informal kitchen and our living space.
- [Maddy] Correct.
- But that poses a challenge, I presume, for a designer?
- Well, you know, Kevin, this actually ended up being our transition room.
And because the kitchen is so light, and because the front of the house is so dark, what we decided to do is have this be our transition room, and we are going to paint the wainscoting.
- Really?
So you're gonna cover up this beautiful woodworking here?
- [Abbey] We are, we're gonna paint it light so that it goes more with the back of the house.
- It was a very difficult decision, but as a compromise, we are keeping the beautiful fireplace its original wood color.
- Yeah, so a little bit of an accent piece right here, and so truly a transition, a little light, a little dark?
- You know, yes, that's it, and we did honor the Victorian feel of the rest of the house, so we don't feel that bad that we're painting.
- Terrific, well, I know a lot of work has gone into it so far, I cannot wait to see it all come together.
Thank you so much, guys.
- Thank you.
(upbeat music) - When Paul and Maddy bought their old house, they inherited some treasures, one of which was a billiard table built in the 1920s.
If you're gonna restore a table like that, you don't take it to just anyone.
We found a billiard expert, Steve Kelly, hey, Steve.
- [Steve] Hey, Norm.
- You know, I've been walking around your showroom and this place is fantastic, it's filled with billiard tables, new ones and antiques.
You have something for everyone, but who actually buys these tables?
- Well, primarily my customers are people that've finally built their dream home, they built this wonderful billiard room, and they wanna furnish it with a fantastic piece of furniture.
- Well, these certainly are pieces of furniture.
I mean, they're incredible, look at this table, it's got rosewood along the top edge.
- [Steve] Brazilian rosewood, yes.
- [Norm] And look at all this marquetry, that's a lotta work.
- [Steve] Yeah, primarily it's mahogany that's inlaid with several different species of woods to create these patterns.
- [Norm] And when was this table built?
- [Steve] Built in the 1860s by the J.
E.
E.
Game Company, they were located in Boston, the same manufacturer as the table in Newton.
- [Norm] Were there a lot of billiard builders here in Boston?
- Yes, Boston was a mecca for billiard manufacturing, there were probably seven or eight manufacturers in town.
- And what's a table like this worth?
- This will sell for $60,000.
- $60,000?
- Yes.
- Well, I guess it is an antique and collectible.
- Here's one that's a bit more elaborate, this is Brazilian rosewood, built in the 1860s by the J.
E.
E.
Game Company, again.
- This one has some carving, it's carved right into this rail, is that gold leaf in the carving?
- [Steve] That's actually a bronzing powder that we replaced on the entire table 'cause it had failed.
- [Norm] What else did you do to this table?
- [Steve] Well, the finish, obviously, is new, there was some veneer work that had to be replaced, some of the veneers, some of the moldings had to be redone, and of course, the basics, the leather pockets, the tassels, the rubber cushions, the cloth, things like that had to be done.
- And look at these legs, I mean, these are solid, solid wood, all hand-carved, is this more of that bronzing powder?
- [Steve] It is, from the Renaissance Revival period, some beautiful details on there.
- [Norm] It is a gorgeous table, what's this worth?
- [Steve] This will sell for 75,000.
- Wow.
Well, you know, I know billiard players love their tables, but they also love their cues, but I've never seen anything like this, what is this?
- This is called a mace, it was built in the late-1700s.
Folklore has it that originally, billiards was a game created by shepherds out in the fields, and they would create a wooden perimeter and they would glide the balls along the grass with their hook sticks.
- [Norm] Well, they weren't using this, they were actually using their hook sticks?
- [Steve] They were using their hook sticks to glide the ball, and eventually, billiards became a table sport, and it became more fashionable, rather than gliding the ball, to actually push the ball, so they applied a leather tip onto the mace, which later evolved into the billiard cue.
- So this is an early billiard cue, the earliest billiard cue?
- [Steve] Yes, it is.
- [Norm] And this is more of a modern cue, are these antiques?
- [Steve] These were built in the 1880s, yes.
- [Norm] Wow, look at these, they're all beautiful.
Look at the work in these, the inlays, thin, thin strips of wood all hand-done, and some mother-of-pearl right here?
- [Steve] Yes.
- [Norm] Well, you know, I'm not even gonna ask you what these are worth.
- [Steve] Well, Norm, does this table look familiar to you?
- Yeah, actually it does, I mean, the legs on it are very similar to our table.
- [Steve] Well, it should look familiar because it's the same manufacturer, the same period, and it's just a different species of wood.
- [Norm] And what'd you do to this table?
- [Steve] This table, the finish had totally failed so we had to remove it and put a new finish on it, and then, of course, the basics, like we talked about before, the pockets, and cloth, and things.
- [Norm] But you're not gonna strip our table?
- No, the finish on your table was in very good condition, we're going to save that finish and clean it, it's gonna look fantastic, come on, I'll show you.
All right, Norm, I have a side rail from your table.
- [Norm] Right, we actually have six of these, and this is solid, quartersawn oak with these ebony inlays.
- That's right, and what I'm gonna do now is I'm going to cut the cloth and remove it so that we can put the new cloth in place.
- [Norm] Yeah, it looks pretty worn out.
- [Steve] Oh, it's very worn out, it's very stiff.
There's no map left on it.
And what I'm going to do here is I'm gonna remove the feather strip-- - [Norm] What's this?
- [Steve] This is a custom-made tool that one of the previous owners of the company had made years ago, and I've had it since, it's made specifically to pull these feather strips out.
- [Norm] Really?
Okay.
- [Steve] So what you do is you dig down underneath, get underneath there, pull the cloth back a little bit, and slide that baby out.
- [Norm] Oh, I see, so that actually helps hold the cloth in.
- That's what wedges it at the top so you don't see tacks on the top.
Just gonna brush this down, Norm, so you might wanna step back a sec.
- [Norm] Yeah, quite a bit of dirt and grime in there.
- [Steve] A little bit, that's 80 years of wear and tear.
So I'm gonna pull out these little tacks that are holding the cloth in place.
Now, the homeowner had picked out this color green, which is slightly different than what he had before.
- [Norm] A little bit darker, that's gonna look great though.
- [Steve] It's called spruce, it is a sharp color.
- [Norm] Now is there any particular side that has to be up on this?
- Well, always, rule of thumb is the smoother side goes up.
So, first thing you do when you're installing the cloth is you tack down the ends, 'cause you have to have a nice, taut piece of cloth in order to start.
Then the feather strip that we pulled out earlier, I had marked kind of a witness mark here so that I can start in the same spot, so it'll go exactly the same way it came apart, and it just gets tapped in place.
And then what I do is I'll remove one of the tacks that I had put in there, finish off the end of the pounding, come back down to the opposite end, continue tapping it in, take out the final tack.
This, of course, is the side pocket, which is a little different than the corner.
Okay, now I have to get this flush with the top of the rail, so I'm going to pound it in, which will get that strip in there nice and tight.
Okay, and then we got a little bit of extra material there, I'm gonna have to trim that out.
So we'll cut and trim it right along the front edge.
Gotta be careful with this, if you make a slip, you'll cut the good piece of cloth.
- [Norm] Don't wanna do that.
- [Steve] Nope.
- Now, you need quite a few skills in this trade?
You have to be a wood refinisher and you have to know how to do upholstery.
- Don't forget moving them, Norm, these things are very heavy.
- And that's that.
So, as an insurance policy, what I'm going to do is put these little tacks just to hold those feather strips in place.
- [Norm] Yeah, you don't want those popping out.
- Okay, that takes care of that.
Stapling the cloth is next.
- [Norm] So you're using staples now instead of tacks?
- [Steve] I'll still use tacks around the edges but the field, staples, a lot quicker, a lot faster, and we've been doing this since the '70s, so it makes life a lot easier.
And all you're doing really is just filling in the field here.
Okay, so that does the field.
- You pulled that pretty tight.
- Yeah, it's on there, you're not gonna have any movement on it.
Then you have to attach the ends.
So what you do, take a tack hammer and you start at the top here, fold it over and make your attachment.
All right, and then we have to make this pull here, which takes out the bulk of the wrinkle at the corner.
Hold that in place, and then it's just a matter of filling in.
You wanna try and eliminate any of the wrinkles that are there.
- I've done a little bit of upholstery and it's not having any creases in there that's the trick.
- It is, and it's the order and the way that you pull it that determine where the wrinkles are going to be and how to eliminate them.
All right, so I'm gonna fill in the rest with the stapler, 'cause the bulk of the wrinkle is gone, and it's just a matter of working the rest of it out.
After that, you have a lot of excess cloth, so you have to cut it out with the blade.
And this is the finished product.
- [Norm] Wow, that's gonna look great.
So how long to complete all the restoration on our table?
- I would say we have, probably, another two weeks.
- Well, there's a lotta work that goes into it, and I can't wait to see it back at the house.
Don't forget, we have a game.
- Oh, I've been warming up.
- I have too.
(both laugh) (upbeat music) - Hey, Norm, despite the fact that it's a busy job site, we got ourselves an interior designer already talking curtains and carpets.
(Norm chuckles) - Well, things are further along than they look.
Up on the third floor, the original plaster is being repaired, down here in the kitchen, new plaster on the ceilings and the walls.
Now feel this down here.
- What do you got?
Oh, that's nice, the radiant heat's on.
- [Norm] Yeah, Richard stopped by and turned it on, that's gonna help cure the plaster.
When that's dry, we're gonna bring our brand new quartersawn oak flooring into the room to acclimate, and next time, we're gonna start laying it down.
- Good deal.
And next time, believe it or not, we're gonna have (upbeat music) kitchen cabinets arrived and Roger's gonna be putting plants in the ground, if you can believe that.
So it's gonna be a great show, make sure you come back.
Until then, I'm Kevin O'Connor, - and I'm Norm Abram, - for This Old House.
Hey, I gotta take my shoes off and feel this radiance.
- Oh, that's nice.
