Good morning.
I'm Kevin O'Connor, and welcome back to this old house.
We have got a lot going on on today's job site.
We're going to be doing some stone work, and you may recognize these blocks right here.
We use them on the retaining wall in the backyard, but of course they're not real stone.
They are concrete made to look like granite.
Well, today we're going to be using the real thing—Milford Pink Granite.
We already have some on the foundation, but we need some more.
So we're going to take you deep into a quarry.
We're going to cut some block, and then we're going to see how it is made into this finished veneer.
We're also going to visit one of this country's great civic plazas.
It has an impressive collection of buildings, and we're going to see those through the eyes of a architect.
We'll also be with Richard, who's going to give us an update on the mechanical systems.
And Tommy, you have promised me, what is going on here?
Money tight?
You got to get it still going, huh?
I can't wait not selling it.
We're giving it away.
We're giving it away to a resource center.
Say hello to Matthew Saint Ange, and he's in charge of the resource center.
We're giving it to him, right?
Hey, Matthew.
Hi, Kevin.
So yours is the nonprofit organization that takes old houses and makes sure they get into the hands of new families.
We are with the Building Materials Resource Center, a nonprofit building materials reuse program in Roxbury, Mass.
We, our mission is to help low and moderate income homeowners to maintain or repair their homes, and we do that by collecting donated building materials and selling them at a low cost to our customers.
We serve about 1,300 people per year, and materials like sinks, pedestal sinks, bathrooms, fans, flooring—all of which came out of our house—and it's good to hear that they're going into someone else's house.
All right, well, thank you, Matthew.
Welcome, thank you.
And Tommy, an update from you on the progress, right?
Well, we got a lot going on.
We got work walls in the basement.
We've got a kitchen that's coming together.
We've got the deck off the back stairs to the backyard.
We've got the math.
All right, you've been a busy man.
Sounds like it's going to be a great show.
It is.
Let's get to it.
We made some serious changes to the second floor master suite, Tommy.
Right, this part of the master suite is actually going to be a home office.
But I think the biggest change we made to this space up here was this closet right here, and the closet to the second bedroom over here, which is eventually going to be one of the kids' bedrooms.
Right.
Now these are big closets, but think about it.
You couldn't access the space at all down here because it was a single door way over here.
So all dead space down here.
Right.
So we opened it up and put a double door in this closet and a double door on that closet.
No new space, just gave access.
Exactly.
Now to divide the space between the office and the bedroom, there was a door that swung open, and when it was open, it was up against this mantle.
Mm-hmm.
So to solve that problem, we're going to put a pocket door in here.
All right.
So that'll slide in there, and that'll separate the office from the sleeping quarters in here.
Right.
Remember the window that used to be right here?
We took it out because they want to put a bed against this wall, and this was in the way.
Right.
And we're putting two new windows, one on this side of the bed here, and another one on that side of the bed over here.
So a nice clear bed wall.
Right.
Now here in the master bathroom, we framed up a partition wall with a pocket door in it.
This divides the space right here with a walk-in closet with a nice window in it.
I like a window in a closet.
That is a luxury.
Morning light and all.
Now speaking of luxuries, look at the size of this shower stall.
There's not even a bathtub in here.
This thing is huge.
And you've got some sort of a half wall, half glass here.
No, this is all open.
No wall.
Yeah, it's a remarkable transformation, back.
I mean, it used to be an outside porch.
I remember we had shingles on this wall, porch floor right here.
Remember that slope too?
We leveled it all off.
Well, right here, started on this side in the corner, there is a vanity with a sink and a mirror.
Mm-hmm.
Long vanity goes all the way over here with another sink and another mirror.
We've got large windows going up top there, and the transom windows, and a double hung in the center to bring in plenty of outdoor light.
But we're going to privacy because these things are up nice and high.
Good feature.
Exactly.
You know, as we look at this wall, really deep here, Tommy.
Is this what's this two by ten?
Well, it equals a two by ten, but it's actually two two by fours framed.
A little space between walls.
Right.
Well, I want to make a deep wall with plenty of insulation.
This is a wet wall, and I want to put the plumbing on the front half, or the outer half here, and insulation on the outside to keep the cold air away from the pipes so they won't freeze.
We've seen our share of burst pipes around an outside wall, so that's going to be a big help.
Yeah.
All right, this is going to look great.
Down here in the kitchen, Kevin, we're making great progress.
All of our rough wiring is in, and a lot of the rough plumbing.
So it looks good, Tom, but not as good as this.
The focal point of the new kitchen is bay.
Yeah, you and Norm were framing it out last week.
Looks like you pretty much got it finished.
Well, look at the light the windows bring in.
Isn't it great?
Well, right here in the corner, we got a big tall cabinet going all the way to the floor, and a desk right here with a computer and a phone.
So we got a nice little separation between the kitchen workspace and what's going to be a new mudroom.
Right.
But look at this.
Look at this space out here.
This is great.
Oh, Tom, I like this.
Your new porch, but this thing is like a treehouse.
You finish this, and I'm never going to leave.
Well, I'm waiting for the Brazilian hardwood to come for the decking, and when that comes, you can give me a hand putting that down.
Yeah, the heat.
I'd love to.
Okay.
Look over here, Kevin.
I finally started work on the stairway to the backyard.
For the first time, this house is going to be connected to this backyard.
Your homeowners are going to love it.
Have you been busy?
We have.
Tom and guys, we're also busy down here in the basement, framing out some new rooms for a laundry space, an exercise space, and a mechanical room, which is under the command of Richard.
Hey, Richard.
Hey, whoa.
Surprise!
That's something's missing here.
Well, lots going on.
When you were last here, we had two gas furnaces right here, and you guys said they're in pretty good shape.
They weren't there going to stay.
They weren't too old, but the ductwork was just an absolute mess.
So we knew we'd have to play around the ductwork.
All of a sudden, we were told that the chimney was disappearing because they wanted space for the kitchen, and that's a critical element.
Well, for us, it is.
We have two furnaces that vented into the chimney.
We had a water heater that vented the chimney.
Now, what do you do?
So now we would have to get new furnaces designed to direct vent to outside.
Okay.
We'd have to get a water heater designed to direct vent to outside.
So we said, "Tom, let's put in one appliance to heat water.
" This is what we're using here.
Excuse me one second.
This is a gas-fired condensing boiler.
We're going to heat the water here.
We can vent it out through a pipe to outside that goes up through the roof of the entry.
This single pipe has two pipes inside.
Air for combustion comes in this way.
Flue products come out that way.
So we're going to use one unit and hot water for everything.
Absolutely.
We're going to heat hot air on the second and third floor using the water.
We're going to heat the hot water for the faucets around the whole house, and we're going to do radiant to the whole first floor and the master bathroom.
All right, and I can see that you've actually got them up here in the bays already.
Yeah, the panels.
Yeah, great progress.
You know, we got these transfer plates attached to the underside of the subfloor, so you can see right here that it takes the heat out of the packs, the crosslink polyethylene, transfers to this plate, and right to the underside of the floor.
Easy access to those bays, and people can be walking around in their bare feet.
I never wear shoes upstairs.
All right, light changes, but they're going to hold in.
Thanks.
Our house was built in 1897 by a wealthy Bostonian, and when he moved out here to West Newton Hill, he wanted to design a house that was reflective of his newfound stature.
I think you've hit on it, Zachary, Kevin.
This house, being built on a hill, it rises out of the ground grandly, and the foundation is a very important part of its design.
I think our homeowner really wanted to demonstrate his sense of prosperity by using a material called Milford Pink Granite.
It was actually quite trendy at the time, having just been used on a very prominent Boston public building.
So the other day, Jeff took us to downtown Boston, where we learned more about this stone.
Welcome, Kevin, to one of the great public squares of architecture in America, Copley Square, right here in the center of Boston.
If you live in the city, you spend a lot of time in the square, but I'm thrilled to spend some time with you and look at it through the eyes of an architect.
It's a great opportunity for me, Kevin.
Let's start with Trinity Church, designed by H.
H.
H・H・
Richardson and built in 1877.
What really fascinates me about this church is how, as a church, it's very massive, not quite so tall and vertical like you would imagine, and very anchored into the square, approachable to all the people that pass through the square.
Okay.
And the architect, he's so prominent, actually gets to style the end after himself, which issonian Romanesque.
What are some of the critical elements of that style?
Well, first of all, the Roman arches, of course, then the contrast of materials and the exuberant use of detail.
The light granite stone juxtaposed against the dark red sandstone—you can see that all throughout, as well as the detail and all of these carvings and the stories told here in the architrave.
It's fabulous, isn't it?
I think the longer that you look, the more you'll learn.
I love this building.
You can enjoy it from the square, but remarkably, you can also enjoy it in the reflection of another notable building just across the street.
Yes, this was designed by I.
M.
M.
Pei and built in 1976, and his charge, interestingly enough, Kevin, was that his building should reflect the great architecture of Copley Square, and I think, in fact, he took it quite literally.
He did, but he also mixes it up.
I mean, it soars into the sky.
This glass monolith.
Yes, I love this.
These two buildings together—one a church brought low to the square, the other a corporate building rising to the heavens—good reflection of American culture in the late 20th century.
All right, and I love to hear your thoughts on another prominent building here in the square, just across the way, our library, Boston Public Library, a civic temple to public learning, and this is the reason why I brought you here, Kevin.
The inscription says it all: the Public Library of the City of Boston, built by the people and dedicated to the advancement of learning.
The Boston Public Library, Kevin, was designed by Charles McKim of the famed architectural firm in New York City.
McKim was very prominent firm, yes, and at the time, 1895.
America was feeling really good about itself.
That's the period known as Manifest Destiny when America was spreading its economic and political will across the globe.
And I think this library really reflects how we felt about ourselves.
And the statue that's in it.
So we get a very statuesque building back in the day, and it's still one of the great libraries in the U.S.
Yes, it is.
And we could spend days on the inside examining all the architectural detail.
But the reason we're here today is we want to examine the exterior fabric.
Let's start here at the bottom.
Everything here is built from Milford pink granite.
All these stairs.
Look at the beautiful sensual shape of the carved nosings of the steps.
Across the plaza, into the built-in bench, more beautifully carved stone.
Up the facade, very, very diverse, but elegant use of the same granite all the way to the top of the cornice.
Milford pink granite.
Every stone, Milford pink granite.
Every stone.
And you're also saying it.
This is the same stone that's on the foundation of our house.
Yes, isn't that wonderful?
Let's examine this stone.
Now, one of the things that made this stone so approachable was its very uniform character, punctuated by the with these black flecks of mica.
But overall, what I really like about the stone is it has that very soft pink hue that makes it warm and gives that texture some softness.
So we have a significant building and an important time in this country's history, and every stone is the same, all Milford pink.
I presume McKim's choice of the stone was critical.
Yes, think about it.
McKim probably could have used any stone from around the world for a building of this character, but he really wanted to make a statement.
He wanted to use an American stone.
And in fact, this stone comes from a quarry not 30 miles from here in Milford, Massachusetts.
So this is it.
This is the source of all that beautiful Milford pink granite.
Here's our quarry.
So you think an architect like McKim would have come to a place like this, maybe look at the stone before he decided to use it?
Oh, I absolutely do, think so, Kevin.
A building of that importance, the architect would come, look at the stone, really judge its character, make sure it's what he wants.
Look at this stone.
Here's that smooth face we saw at the Boston Public Library.
It's called a dress face.
But our house, we're looking for a natural face, also called a rock face.
And so we come to the source.
And to my eye, we've got ourselves a pretty big quarry here.
Which means we must have a quarrier and he must be Randy Smith.
Are you doing?
All right, Randy, get up on corner.
Trap flash, Randy.
Nice to meet you.
So what are we looking at here, Randy?
This is all Milford pink granite.
Yes, it is.
Tell me about your operation.
Dimensional stock.
By dimensional, what do you mean?
You're looking for square blocks, and Kevin, from those blocks, we'll get all the smaller pieces that go into our foundation work.
Okay.
Looks like all the work's going on down there in the quarry.
Can we get in there?
Why certainly.
Give you right down the grain.
Okay, well, just be gentle, Randy.
Yep.
All right, touch now.
About half way down into this quarry, you can see the size of this block that you took out, or the holes left behind.
And what is this?
About eight feet wide and how high?
Twelve feet tall.
How far to back here?
Probably about fifteen feet back there.
This is huge.
So, how do you go about getting a piece of stone like this out of the quarry?
It's a combination of drilling and sawing.
All right.
So, what's the drilling about?
We drill a three inch hole down here on the bottom.
So, like this guy right here?
Yep.
And depending upon how big a block you want, determines how far in you go.
So, you're drilling it this way horizontally.
Yes.
はい。
Then we'll take our drill and go up top.
We'll drill another hole up top, come down and meet the inside of that.
So, if I understand this correctly, you're going to end up with sort of a hole coming down here vertically, connecting to this one horizontally.
Right.
To take a wire through that hole.
If you come over here, we'll see we've got a wire going in this hole over here.
So, this is actually going through that hole.
What's the wire for?
Cutting.
That's a that's a cutting wire, diamond cutting wire.
This is your blade.
That's it.
But that's remarkable thing, because you're going to cut all of this stone with a wire.
How's that possible?
Oh, come right over here.
We'll start this up for you.
Yep.
はい。
Piece of this wire.
Okay.
So we've got a little bit of rubber here.
Diamonds on a cable.
So I can see the diamonds and actually feel them, sort of embedded right here in this metal.
Yep.
And operated by this machine.
Yes, it is.
All right.
Is this all automated?
Yes.
はい。
Once you get it going, it's all automatic.
Oh yeah.
So there it's spinning.
Yep.
Oh, we got some water running through there.
Yeah.
はい。
We got to keep it wet.
We use a little water.
So down through the bottom, all the way through the length of that rock, moves around and it comes out the top.
Saw cut.
Seems like it would take forever to cut this stone.
Ah, no.
Actually, just the kick of a block, or only take about an hour to cut.
And here's the saw cut.
Wow, that is a remarkably clean cut, straight as an arrow.
That's surprising.
And look at the finished product.
It's nice and smooth.
It has that dress look that we saw at the library.
Almost like it's ready to be installed.
Yeah.
And now we need to split the block.
How do you do that, Randy?
Well, we're going to drill a series of holes here.
So we've got them all drilled right here.
And how do you go about drilling these?
I drill a drill.
It's called the twin liner.
We can drill two holes at one time.
The rod actually spin and hammer as we drill.
So you got some sort of special tip?
It's got a carbide tip on the blade, yeah.
And you drill all the way down to the bed.
Yep.
We'll drill twelve feet here.
All right.
So we've got freshly drilled holes.
What do we do now?
Okay.
Now we're going to fill them up with some frac.
What is frac?
Frac is an expansion concrete.
What does that do?
We fill them holes from top to bottom, and let it sit overnight.
And as it hardens up, it'll expand enough to fracture the stone.
All right, this is what we're getting morning.
Wow, that's amazing!
That pushed that rock almost three quarters of an inch.
How much stone did we just move?
Got about thirty-six tons here.
Fract is amazing.
No more wedges, no more sledges.
There you go.
But by my calculation, you still have one more cut to do.
Here's the other crack that we caused by those holes and the expanding crack, so straight down here.
And then the first one you made, that wire saw, gave us this nice straight one right here.
So that means we still have to cut across this bottom in order to separate this big block.
Uh, nope, the bottom's already done.
Already done?
How'd that happen?
Well, it's a natural crack in the stone.
It's what we call a bed.
So we don't have to cut across the bottom.
Nope, this is already here.
So is this ready to be pulled out?
Uh, nope, I have to side shift it now.
What's side shifting?
Well, the fract line, the fract line up top may have separated the stone, but it's like Velcro, so it's sort of still stuck together.
It's still pretty stuck together.
I need to side shift it, which frees the fract line up.
Well, how do you do that?
Well, we've got this.
We got a water bag.
Water bag.
Boy, that looks like steel.
It's it looks like a steel bladder.
How do we use that?
Okay, what we do is slide this in this cut.
You're just gonna fill that up, and as that bladder expands, it's gonna pop this rock out.
And it'll just slowly side shift it over.
All right, here it.
Boy, as I look at the main cut here from the wire saw, you can see just how open that is.
So remarkable how a weight can move just by water.
Water bag did a job on this block.
I mean, you can see here at the fract line, just how far it's moved.
And from here, what we'll do is we'll keep tubing it up, smaller enough for the crane to handle.
Pull it out of here, put it on a truck, and ship it off for fabrication.
Thanks so much.
That's exactly where we're headed next.
Thank you, Gil.
Thanks, Randy.
So, Kevin, this fabrication facility has been in operation since 1881, and they move 100,000 tons of stone here at the Hawthorne Stone.
This looks familiar to you, doesn't it?
I am an expert now in Millford, thanks to you.
There's a big block, the smooth side right here.
Note out from our wire saw, and then look at all the flex here from the mica.
Yeah, and we know what this is, don't we?
Now drill holes, and then put the fract in, and that's what separated the back of the quarry.
That's right.
Now remember, we need blocks of 15-inch face dimensions for our project, so we need to cut this block into smaller pieces still.
And over here, we had another saw.
What's that diamond encrusted blade?
I was like, see right there.
There's a wire saw going through it.
Got a little bit of water coming out of it, and it's sort of got this vertical cut.
It looks like slicing bread.
That's right.
But this is going to give us two smooth faces.
What we need are rough faces.
That's another step altogether.
Here are slices of bread.
Blade flat.
It's been cut down a little bit already, but you can see that we've got our sixteen inches of dimension that we want.
So the smooth sides from the top and bottom, and now we've got to cut these again.
That's right.
We need a four inch interval.
So we're going to feed these in order to get our rough faces that we need.
So this is the cutting machine right here.
It's got high rollers.
So I look at it as sort of a row of, you know, almost metal-looking wedges on the top and bottom.
That's right.
One comes up from below.
One comes down from the top.
Concentrates the force and splits stone, and there you have it, beautiful Milford pink stone.
Something Roger can work with.
He's going to love getting his hands on these.
Here we go.
Roger, you did not waste any time getting to work with this Milford pink granite.
So what do you think of this, Kevin?
It's a beautiful stone.
It splits and works really well.
So I guess the challenge for you is to replicate what was on the house.
I mean, this is very prominent.
We've heard it's a beautiful stone.
We've got it on the upper wall.
You've got to make it appear down here on the lower wall, and a good match.
I tell you, to my eye, this looks pretty good.
Nice job.
Well, wasn't easy, Kevin.
If you look up here, this is called ash lap pattern stone.
Say that again.
Sorry.
Combination of rectangles and squares, but no pattern at all.
So we had to cut each individual stone to a different size, so we didn't have any pattern.
Looks pretty good to me.
And then on top of it, piece of blue stone.
Right.
It's going to run the whole length of the wall and be a seat wall or a shelfing here.
Okay.
Now the other problem we had was matching the grout.
You look here.
This grout here, Tommy filled me in, is lime and sand mixed together, and we can't copy that anymore.
So we tried to get a mortar that we were going to use, but they were too dark.
Finally, I found a white one.
Oh, that's not even close to a match.
I hate to inform you, but what I did is I added a little bit of dark mortar to it, and I ended up with this.
How's that look?
Well, it looks great, and I just saw it on the wall down here.
Yeah, you definitely nailed it.
All right.
So what's the process for installing these?
Because the original stone were solid blocks.
Whereas this is veneer onto this poured concrete wall.
Right.
The original stone was twelve to sixteen inches thick, stacked on top of each other.
Here we're veneering it to the concrete, so we batter the back, push it, and set it into place.
All right.
Now you also notice we have some mechanical fasteners here.
Now they're shot into the concrete with a twenty-two shell.
Okay.
Now Fred's ready to shoot one of those right now.
I've seen his guns before.
Just sort of press it in there and.
Well, that secures it.
Yep.
All right.
So that's into the retaining wall.
What actually goes into the top of this piece of stone?
This is going to sit right in the mortar bed and help hold everything back.
All right.
Good job.
So you've got yourself a lot of stone work.
Just lower wall here, and then you've got a whole bluestone patio to work on.
Yep, that's right.
The bluestone patio is going to come out at about this height and come all the way over.
And we're going to have to build a wall to hold it up.
Looks like you've already started building the retaining wall here.
No, that's not a wall, Kevin.
This is a sample.
Actually, four samples we made, so the homeowner can look at it and see what it was going to look like.
So what kind of stone are we looking at here?
We have a New England stone, and this is light brown.
We have another sample of New England stone, but this one's darker.
A lot more grays in it.
Yep, a little rounded, those soft edges.
Yep.
Not a bad look.
A third New England stone, but it has blue in it.
Look at that.
That might actually look good with our bluestone patio.
Nice complement.
And then down here, something completely different—a thin horizontal stone.
Right.
This is a Pennsylvania flat stone.
I like the lighting on this, and you really get a sense of what it looks like with this bluestone cap.
Right, because the whole wall is going to be capped in bluestone.
I tell you, a nice guy, and this is a lot of work.
Just so our homeowners can see what this wall is going to look like.
Saves a lot of trouble because sometimes homeowners just can't envision what the wall is going to look like.
Well, did they envision it?
Did they pick one?
They're close.
All right.
よし。
Well, do you have a favorite?
Oh, yeah, definitely have one.
I think I'm getting one here, and you may have a favorite.
Join us next time to find out what wall Roger built, and to find out what else is going on.
Until then, I'm Kevin O'Connor.
And I'm Roger Cook.
For this old house.
「This Old House」より。
I bet I know which one you picked.
I'm not telling, man.
