Not so long ago, I literally had this phase of every single day there was some sort of Amazon package arriving to my house, and it didn't even have to be like expensive.

I would just like buy random crap all day.

This is an issue because your brain is always weighing two things: how much effort is it going to take, and how much reward am I getting?

When the reward takes one click, the deal looks amazing for your brain.

Okay, so you keep doing it because you don't have to put a lot of effort to get the reward.

It is literally a slot machine, and our brains are designed in a way where unpredictable rewards produce way more dopamine compared to a predictable reward, like waiting for the package that you order from Amazon versus gambling and buying like loot boxes.

And the problem is my working memory is really bad.

And when I think about it, I have like these on and off periods with reading.

You know, like I have no end to it.

But when I really look into it, always and always and always, the times that I can't sit through a book are the times that I have something playing in the background twenty-four seven and watching these like engineered dopamine kind of content.

All that dopamine used to come from somewhere, and you have to replace it with something that actually worth the effort.

Because when you don't replace it with something good, I actually found myself that I keep chasing that dopamine from more like worse decisions.

What I actually recommend and what I've been testing out is doing cardio, especially like running outside, like getting outside, get your sunlight, produce some BDNF.

I started like weightlifting at the very bottom of my major depression, which I struggled with seven years.

It's one of the major things that got me out when I think about it.

And whenever I take a break, maybe like longer than a month, I literally can feel my mental health going down and me getting back to all these like bad habits that I've talked about.

And I think it works so well for me because it is the opposite of a slow machine.

And I'm a very data-oriented person.

Okay, I like numbers.

So as long as I can see I'm progressing, even that is in forms of numbers and not necessarily the way that I look, I can keep going.

And that is the dopamine that you actually work for and that you actually earn.

I actually deliberately made a rule that I don't listen to music during the day other than the times that I'm running or lifting weights, and it actually feels definitely feels way more rewarding.

And it is such a double dopamine hit when I lift weights and listen to music because all day I'm not listening to anything.

It just feels good.

So if there's something you're not letting yourself to do paired with a habit that you want to do, it becomes double the good and it feels so addictive actually.

Most of the time, you can learn something new and being really bad at it is very painful, especially as an adult.

Okay, it is so humiliating to suck at it while a kid next to me that's like four years old smashes you out.

And the progress is so slow.

It's so slow that it almost almost feels like every single time I go to the range, I got worse.

But when you do this again and again, whether that's a golf, a new language, an instrument, or even like making YouTube videos, your brain is trained to expect the reward right away.

And here you're repeating stuff with no results.

A lot of people think like, oh, they're gonna post like 10 videos and like get a user rating.

Whereas you post like 20 videos and you're like nine or eight.
でも20本投稿しても、評価は9か8しかない。
So a lot of people quit because they're used to getting the reward immediately.

Whereas if you keep doing it enough, you train yourself to understand that rewards don't come immediately, so you don't expect them and if you do it on your own, it is extremely hard to stick to.

I never stick to it when I do it myself, but when you go to the classes or when you I don't know like have a coach or something, then there's an accountability and money burning from your pocket.
