The first time I went abroad was when I was twenty, and the first place I went to was America.

あれ多分たぶん初はじめて見みた人ひとはどれを押おしたら水みずが流ながれるのか
I think someone seeing that for the first time would wonder which button to press to flush
っていうの迷まようと思おもうぐらいボタンがたくさんあるんですけど、
there are so many buttons that you'd get confused, but
私わたしの日本にほんのトイレの好すきなところ一ひとつ目めはまず入はいった時ときにあのサニタイザ
The first thing I like about Japanese toilets is first, when you go in there's that sanitizer
があってそのサニタイザーも自動じどうになってるからティッシュをそのサニタイザーの下したにやると
and that sanitizer is also automatic, so when you put tissue under that sanitizer
こう石鹸せっけんが出でてきて
soap comes out like this
便座べんざをきれいに掃除そうじできることだから座すわれるんですよ私わたしは座すわる
and you can clean the toilet seat nicely, so I can sit, I sit
のとで便座べんざが暖あたたかいことそれからウォシュレットがあること
and the toilet seat is warm, and there's a washlet
あとはまああと他ほかにもありますけどそれはまた後あとで言いいますね

で一時間いちじかんに一回いっかいとか掃除そうじをしに来きてくれてる人ひとがいて本当ほんとうにその人ひとたちに感謝かんしゃだなっていつも思おもいます。
and someone comes to clean like once an hour, and I'm always grateful to those people.
だってその人ひとたちがいなかったら、こんなに快適かいてきにトイレ使つかえないし、
Because if those people weren't there, we couldn't use the toilets so comfortably,
なんなら結構けっこうトイレでね、女性じょせいだと化粧けしょうをしてたり、ちょっと時間じかん長ながく過すごす人ひとも多おおいのかなと思おもうんですけど、
and actually, in the restroom, for women, people doing makeup, I think there are many people who spend a bit of a long time there, but
綺麗きれいじゃなかったらきっとそこまで長ながくいないと思おもうんですよね。
if it wasn't clean, I don't think they'd stay that long.
で、ちゃんと化粧けしょうする場所ばしょが設もうけられてる、設もうけられてるっていうのは、まあそこに準備じゅんびしてあるっていうこと。

トイレの中なか、そのトイレの中なかじゃないですけど、まあトイレのスペースの中なかに化粧けしょうする場所ばしょがね、鏡かがみの場所ばしょが
Inside the restroom, well not inside the toilet stall, but in the restroom space there's a place to do makeup, a place with mirrors
あったりするので、それもありがたいなって思おもいます。
so I'm grateful for that too.
でも考かんがえてみると、こんなトイレが進化しんかしたのって結構けっこう最近さいきんのことのような気きがしてて。
But thinking about it, I feel like toilets evolving like this is something quite recent.
私わたしが小学生しょうがくせいの時とき、小学校しょうがっこうのトイレは全然ぜんぜん違ちがうトイレでした。
When I was in elementary school, the elementary school toilets were completely different toilets.
今いまどうなんだろうな。
I wonder how it is now.
今いまわかんないけど、小学校しょうがっこうの時ときは和式わしきのトイレってわかりますか。

皆みなさんが知しってる、まあ世界中せかいじゅうで知しられてるこうトイレの形かたち、座すわるトイレは洋式ようしきのトイレっていうんですけど、

でその便座べんざが温あたたかいとかウォシュレットだけじゃなくて、そのサニタイザーが横よこに付ついたのでずっと綺麗きれいに、

もう前まえの人ひとが座すわったこととかを気きにせずに、
so without worrying about the person before you having sat there,

便座べんざ綺麗きれいにしてから使つかおうとか、自分じぶんが使つかった後あとも綺麗きれいにしておこうとかそういうのができるようになったのも嬉うれしいし。
to clean the seat before using it, or keep it clean after you use it yourself, I'm happy that we can do that now.
さらにあの手てをどこにもつけなくてよくなったのはすごいいいって思おもいます。

外そとに遊あそびに行いったときに、例たとえばトイレ流ながすときって
when you go out to play, for example when flushing the toilet
昔むかしはこうねボタンギュって押おしたりとかバーをギュって押おさなきゃいけなかったから、
in the old days you had to press a button hard or push a lever hard, so
誰だれかがトイレをした後あとに手てを洗あらう前まえに触さわったところを触さわらなきゃいけなかったじゃないですか。
you had to touch where someone had touched after using the toilet before washing their hands, right.
でも今いまはこうやって手てをすっとかざして
But now you just wave your hand like this
あの黒くろいところがあるから黒くろいところに手てをかざす
there's a black spot so you hold your hand over the black spot
手てをこうその黒くろいところの前まえに持もってくるだけでセンサーでジャーって流ながれてくれたりとか
just by bringing your hand in front of that black spot the sensor flushes it with a whoosh,
むしろそれをしなくても立たち上あがったら勝手かってにセンサーが反応はんのうして水みずが流ながれるとかね
or rather even without doing that, when you stand up the sensor reacts on its own and the water flows
あるからそれも嬉うれしいし。

あとは音姫おとひめって聞きいたことありますか？

音姫おとひめっていうのはあの音おとの姫ひめ、姫ひめはプリンセスです。
Otohime means sound princess, hime is princess.
あのだからサウンドプリンセスなんですけど名前なまえね英語えいごにしたらね。
Well, so it's called Sound Princess, that's the name, if you put it in English.
音姫おとひめっていうのは自分じぶんがあのトイレをしている時ときの音おとを他ほかの人ひとに聞きかれたくないから音姫おとひめっていうのを
Otohime means, when you're using the toilet yourself, you don't want other people to hear the sounds, so there's this thing called Otohime
押おすとトイレの水みずが流ながれてる音おとがするんです。
when you press it, it makes the sound of toilet water flushing.
水流すいりゅうしてないけど水みずが流ながれてる音おとがするのジャーって。
It's not actually flushing water, but it makes the sound of water flushing, like whoosh.
だからあれも嬉うれしいし、あとはその流ながすのセンサーでしょで音姫おとひめでしょ。
So that's nice too, and also the flush is sensor-activated, right, and then there's Otohime.
あとはなんだっけあ蓋ふた例たとえばトイレに入はいって行いって蓋ふたもやっぱり誰だれかが触さわるじゃないですか。

でもそうやってそのトイレってやっぱり汚きたない場所ばしょではあるじゃないですか。

汚きたない場所ばしょなのに綺麗きれいって思おもえるのってそういうテクノロジーもすごくすごく大事だいじですけど、
Even though it's a dirty place, the reason we can think of it as clean is that kind of technology is really, really important, but
やっぱりそこを掃除そうじしてくださってる清掃員せいそういんの方ほう
it's also the cleaning staff who clean that place
の力ちからというか、その人ひとたちに感謝かんしゃしなきゃいけないなって本当ほんとうにいつも思おもいます。
their effort, I really always think we have to be grateful to those people.

知しらない人ひとたちが使つかってるトイレを毎まい時間じかんね綺麗きれいにチェックしに来きてくれてゴミも綺麗きれいにしてくれて

sometimes it's not flushed, or you can see what the previous person left, even in women's toilets
あとはティッシュがトイレットペーパーが足元あしもとに落おちてたりとか
or tissue, toilet paper fallen on the floor
ゴミ箱ばこの蓋ふたがちゃんと閉しまってないとかそういう時そういう時ときはたくさんあるから、そういうのを見みちゃうと、
or the trash bin lid not properly closed, those times happen a lot, so when I see that,
え、
like,
なんでちゃんと流ながさなかったんだろうとか、いろいろなんでだろうって思おもうことはあります。
why didn't they flush properly, I wonder about all sorts of whys.
でもそういうのも、そうもね、清掃員せいそういんの人ひとが綺麗きれいにしてくださってると思おもったら本当ほんとうに感謝かんしゃするしかないなと私わたしは思おもいますね。
But thinking that the cleaners will clean even that up, I think I can only feel grateful.
