Hello everyone.
Welcome to the Japanese podcast.
Yes, thank you for having me.
Today, let's think together about human relationships at work and school in Japan.
Human relationships.
This is a theme that really many people care about, isn't it?
Yes, that's right.
Everyone, please try to imagine for a moment.
The moment you open the workplace door in the morning, a certain specific person catches your eye.
Ah, there is, isn't there.
That kind of person you struggle with.
はい。
Yes.
Even though you haven't said a word yet, doesn't your heart suddenly start pounding, or your stomach start to hurt?
I understand.
Yes, you think, ah, I have to be careful all day again today, and you get tired before work even starts.
Yes, exactly.
I'm sure everyone has had an experience like that.
Today, while looking closely at the material at hand, I'll gently explain our mission of what to do when there's someone you struggle with to make your heart feel lighter.
Yes, let's take our time and look at it slowly.
Living every day, there are people who are easy to talk to, and there are always people who make you a little nervous.
That's right.
It's difficult to become close friends with everyone right away.
Yes, but especially in Japanese society, there is a strong atmosphere that it's very important for everyone to get along without causing trouble with those around you.
Ah, I see.
Like they say, reading the air.
Yes, that's right.
That's why when there's someone you don't get along with, there are really many people who blame themselves, wondering if their communication skills are low, and worry deeply.
The word worry used here is very important.
Yes, it's thinking about it in your mind all the time and feeling distressed.
Actually, in this material too, there are earnest worries written from our listeners.
What kind of worries?
Um, it seems they were warned by a senior at work to get along better with the people around them.
Ah, that's pressure.
Yes, and so they are exhausted from desperately trying to get along even with people who are always strict and hard to deal with.
Hearing this makes you feel really pained.
Yes, it really does, they're pushing themselves too hard.
But trying to force yourself to get along with someone you don't match is like forcing yourself to wear shoes that don't fit, isn't it?
Shoes that don't fit.
Ah, that's a very easy-to-understand analogy.
Yes, your feet will just hurt and you can't walk far.
Why do people push themselves so hard at Japanese workplaces?
Well.
It's because in Japan, wa, that is, the culture of everyone cooperating in the same way within a group, is deeply rooted.
Is it something like teamwork?
Yes, it's close to that.
Because of that, somewhere there's the idea that a person who can get along with everyone is an admirable adult member of society.
I see.
They're convinced that they have to get along with everyone.
Yes.
Just the fact that there's someone I'm not good with at work makes me feel huge pressure, like maybe I'm failing as a working adult.
No, wait a moment, please.
In Japanese companies, behind-the-scenes consensus-building and teamwork are valued very highly, aren't they?
Yes, that's often said.
If I give up thinking I just can't get along with this person,
Won't my boss lower my evaluation, saying that guy lacks cooperativeness and ruins the team atmosphere?
Ah, that's the point.
That's a trap that many people fall into.
A trap?
What do you mean?
What's important here is to clearly separate the goal of doing work from the goal of becoming friends.
Separate work and friendship.
Yes, a company is a place where a team produces results together, not a place where everyone becomes best friends, right?
To maintain harmony, it's enough for everyone to follow minimum rules and move the work forward smoothly.
So that means I don't need to force myself to like the other person?
Exactly.
You don't need to genuinely like them at all.
Ah, getting along well and working smoothly together are different things.
Even if you don't like them from the bottom of your heart, as long as you can communicate for work, you won't be called uncooperative.
Yes, that's right.
Does hearing that make you feel a little relieved?
Yes, hearing that makes me feel a bit relieved.
That's good.
So, as for what to do specifically, the material introduces three steps to lighten your heart.
Three steps.
What are they?
First, step one is to stop deciding whether you like or dislike them.
Stop deciding whether I like or dislike them?
But if I dislike something, I just dislike it, right?
How do you stop that?
Well, I understand why you'd think that.
But when you think about how the human brain works, the reason becomes clear.
How the brain works?
はい。
Yes.
Once you put a label on someone that you dislike them, your brain unconsciously starts looking for reasons to dislike them.
I see, once you decide you dislike them, you end up only looking for their bad points?
Exactly that.
In psychology it's called confirmation bias, but it's a bit of a difficult term so you don't need to remember it.
In short, for example, just because they hit their computer keyboard a little hard, you automatically connect it and think, 'See, they're a rough and unpleasant person after all.'
Um, so you're saying I'm going out of my way to look for unpleasant things about them myself?
That sounds really exhausting.
That's right.
So let's try to stop putting the other person into a like-or-dislike box for once.
How do I stop doing that?
This person has a habit of hitting the computer hard.
This person is someone whose voice gets loud when they make a mistake.
Like that, just look at only the facts, as if filming with a camera.
I see, it's practice in separating your own emotions from the facts happening in front of you.
Yes, that's right.
Look at only the facts objectively, like a camera.
Look only at the facts, like a camera.
I feel like I could calm down a bit.
But when I see as a fact that the other person raises their voice, I still feel unpleasant.
Well, that's only natural.
Yes, how can I get rid of this physical reaction of wanting to get irritated?
That's where step 2, observing carefully when you feel unpleasant, helps.
Observing myself, right.
Yes.
Instead of vaguely worrying that you just dislike that person, you analyze under what conditions you feel stress.
Conditions for stress?
Well, for example,
When we're all in a meeting together it doesn't bother me that much, but the moment we're alone together in a small room, the air feels heavy and my stomach hurts.
Ah, that's exactly it.
If you know the condition that being alone together is the hardest, you can take countermeasures, right?
Countermeasures?
For example, what could you do?
For example, always choosing a time when other colleagues are around when giving work reports, or handling things by email when you can avoid talking directly.
I see.
Knowing the moment your emotional switch turns on is the first step to protecting yourself.
はい。
Yes.
If you observe your own mind, you can find ways to physically avoid it.
That's very practical.
But what if the other person deliberately talks to you and you just can't avoid it?
That's where step 3 comes in.
Here, change your perspective a bit and try imagining yourself as seen by the other person.
Myself as seen by the other person?
はい。
Yes.
When you always think of the other person as strict and scary, actually the other person might also be nervous when talking to you.
No, no, wait a minute.
That's a bit hard to believe.
Is it possible that someone who always acts confidently and uses harsh words is nervous around me?
You may be surprised, but relationships are often compared to a mirror.
When you stiffen up thinking, "I don't want to talk to this person, I'm scared," that facial expression and tone of voice definitely get conveyed to the other person.
Well, it might indeed show on my face.
Then the other person wonders why this person always looks frightened.
They become anxious that their instructions aren't getting across correctly.
Ah, so the other person also feels anxious.
Yes.
And from that anxiety, their words can become even harsher.
I see, my feeling of fear might be drawing out the other person's strictness.
It's like we're throwing a ball of anxiety back and forth to each other.
Exactly.
Even someone who always looks angry might actually just be clumsy and not know how to communicate with younger staff.
I see, they might just be awkward.
Yes.
Just imagining that maybe this person is nervous just like me makes them look not like an absolute enemy but like a fellow human.
That should give you a little more room in your heart.
The other person might also be nervous.
Thinking that way, I feel like I could feel a little kinder.
With these three steps so far, your mental preparation is complete.
Yes, that's right.
So, let's look at the expressions in the materials to see what specific Japanese phrases you can use to handle situations in the actual workplace.
Yes, let's take a look.
First is an important phrase to use when you can no longer handle it all by yourself.
Yes, what is it?
May I consult with you?
That's what it is.
Ah, May I consult with you?
It's words to use when asking a senior or boss for help.
Yes, it's a very important phrase.
But I'm worried that worries about relationships will just sound like badmouthing or complaining.
For example, if I say I hate Mr. Tanaka because he's strict, I'm afraid my evaluation will go down.
You're absolutely right.
That's exactly why we use the framework of the word 'consultation'.
What do you mean by that?
Instead of saying, I have a complaint about Mr. Tanaka, you say, May I consult with you a little about how to proceed with work with Mr. Tanaka?
I see.
So that makes you not a complainer, but a positive person trying to solve a workplace problem.
Yes, it's the magic of words.
You convert a complaint into a work consultation.
With this, your boss will feel comfortable listening to you.
Then let's move on to the next phrase.
What's in the materials is, I'd like to keep a little distance.
はい。
Yes.
Yes, I'd like to keep a little distance.
No, wait a minute.
Do you say this directly to Mr. Tanaka, the person you're not good with?
If you look him in the face and say, I'd like to keep a little distance from you, won't the workplace become hell from tomorrow?
Please don't worry.
Absolutely do not say it directly to the other person.
This is a very important point even within the materials.
Oh, you surprised me.
So you don't say it.
Yes, these words, I'd like to keep a little distance, are not something to say to someone, but something to decide in your heart.
Decide in your heart, what does that specifically mean?
From today, I will keep my relationship with this person to work only.
You give yourself permission not to try too hard to be liked and to keep a little distance.
I see, it's like creating an invisible wall in your mind.
Yes, by keeping emotional distance, even if the other person says harsh words to you, you can separate it as that's that person's problem and has nothing to do with my worth.
So you take psychological distance, not physical physical distance.
But if I keep emotional distance, what should I do about daily communication?
You can't completely ignore them, right?
That's where the third expression comes in handy.
That is, Thank you for your hard work. Excuse me.
Excuse me.
These everyday greetings.
え？
Huh?
Just greetings?
How does that become a solution?
You don't need to force yourself to ask someone you're not good with about their weekend plans or expand on small talk about the weather.
But not greeting people would be a violation of the rules as a working adult, right?
はい。
Yes.
Greetings are the most basic of basics.
So, ohayo gozaimasu.
Otsukaresama desu.
Osaki ni shitsurei shimasu.
Just these greetings should be done more cheerfully and politely than anyone else.
So you make sure to do just the greetings properly and politely.
But is that really enough?
Yes, as long as you greet politely, there will be no problem.
A greeting is like a contract.
A contract?
Yes, you are perfectly following the minimum rules as a person in the workplace.
The other person has no right to complain about you beyond that.
I won't attack you, but I have no intention of becoming your private friend either.
You can safely convey that intention.
I see, as long as I fulfill the duty of greeting, the other person can't blame me for being rude.
That's why I can confidently avoid unnecessary talk and keep an emotional distance.
Exactly.
There's no need to force yourself to become friends.
Say 'otsukaresama desu' and then focus on your own work.
This is something you could start doing tomorrow, right?
Yes, I think I can do it.
For all you Japanese learners, remembering these three points should make workplace relationships much easier.
