愛知県あいちけん名古屋なごや市しのお隣となり大だい府ふ市しに所在しょざいする駅えきなんですけれども、東海道本線とうかいどうほんせんの他ほかにも武ぶ豊ゆたか線せんの起点きてんとなっていて新快速しんかいそくも止とまる結構けっこうね大おおきな駅えきなんですよね。
It's a station located in Obu City, next to Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, and besides the Tokaido Main Line, it's also the starting point of the Taketoyo Line, and Special Rapid trains stop here, so it's quite a big station.

まあまずはその前まえに大府駅おおぶえきの構内こうないちょっとね散策さんさくしてみたいと思おもいます。
Well, first before that, I'd like to take a little walk around inside Obu Station.
駅前えきまえにはですねこのような形かたちでかなり大おおきいロータリーがありまして、まあタクシー乗のり場ばがあったりバスがねたくさん発着はっちゃくしていたりします。
In front of the station, there's quite a large rotary like this, with a taxi stand and lots of buses arriving and departing.
で目めの前まえは東海道本線とうかいどうほんせんの列車れっしゃが過すぎていきましたが駅えきの駅の脇わきね結構けっこう大おおきな跨線橋こせんきょうがあるんですよ。
And right in front, a Tokaido Main Line train just passed, but beside the station there's quite a large overpass.
まずはこちらを登のぼってみましょう。

階段かいだんを登のぼりましてグワッとほら大おおきいめちゃめちゃこの跨線橋こせんきょう長ながくないですか。

中なかに何なにがあるのかっていうとこんな感かんじでですね線路せんろがずらっと並ならんでおります。

なんと東海道本線とうかいどうほんせん愛知県あいちけん内ないって旅客列車りょかくれっしゃと同おなじ線路せんろを貨物かもつがね走はしり去さるんですよ。
and amazingly, on the Tokaido Main Line within Aichi, freight runs on the same tracks as passenger trains.
なのでホームで待まっていて、あの通過つうかする列車れっしゃありますお気きをつけてくださいとアナウンス流ながれるとすごいスピードで貨物列車かもつれっしゃコンテナ積つんだものがバンバンね抜ぬけて行いったりするんですね。
So while waiting on the platform, when the announcement says a passing train is coming, please be careful, container freight trains pass through at incredible speed.
実じつはそんな光景こうけいがここここ大府駅おおぶえきだけではなくて、なんと超ちょう巨大きょだいターミナル駅えき名古屋なごや駅えきでも見みられるんですよ。

Even at big Nagoya Station where Shinkansen and all kinds of trains arrive and depart, freight trains go back and forth on the same tracks as passengers

こっち側がわはね、東海道本線とうかいどうほんせん・武ぶ豊ゆたか線せんの旅客りょかくの線路せんろなんですけど、振ふり返かえったこっちの敷地しきち全部ぜんぶ貨物かもつ用ようです。

名古屋市緑区なごやしみどりくの大高駅おおだかえきで下車げしゃしてみました。

だから開発かいはつに移動いどうしたときはこの光景こうけいがとても新鮮しんせんで、あのホームで列車れっしゃ待まってたらすごいスピードで貨物列車かもつれっしゃが来くる。
So when I moved for development work, this sight was very fresh to me, waiting on the platform and a freight train comes at incredible speed.
すごいんですよ。

こんな感かんじ、もうスレスレ、何なんの柵さくもないからめちゃめちゃこう臨場感りんじょうかんがあるんですけど、うわあ、こんな感かんじでバンバン走はしり去さっていきます。
Like this, it passes right by you, there's no fence at all so it's really thrilling, and wow, they just go rushing past like this.
今いま私わたしのこの後うしろに広ひろがっているここの謎なぞ空間くうかん、これ一体いったい何なんなのかっていうと、
Now, this mysterious open space spreading out behind me, what on earth is it?
貨物かもつ線せんだけが走はしる貨物かもつ専用線せんようせんができるはずだった場所ばしょなんですね。
It's the place where a freight-only line, carrying only freight lines, was supposed to be built.
その貨物かもつ線せんの名前なまえは南部なんぶ貨物かもつ線せんです。
The name of that freight line is the Nanbu Freight Line.
工事こうじが着手ちゃくしゅされたのは1967年ねん、高度経済成長こうどけいざいせいちょう期き真まっただ中なかです。
Construction started in 1967, right in the middle of the high economic growth period.
で、そこから総そう工費こうひなんと345億おく円えんをかけて計画けいかくしていたルート97%
And from there, after spending a total of 345 billion yen, 97% of the planned route
までが完成かんせいした後あと、1983年ねんに工事こうじ
was completed, then in 1983 construction
が凍結とうけつしてしまったんです。
was frozen.
はい、そして未み整備せいびのまま今いまもこのような状態じょうたいで残のこっております。

じゃあ建設けんせつもうすでにされてしま建てられてしまったね。

like the viaducts,

well, the JNR Settlement Corporation at the time sold off the land complete with the viaducts
付つきでその土地とちを破格はかくで自治体じちたいとかね民間みんかんに払はらい下さげたんですよね。
at a bargain price to local governments and private parties.
そしてなんとその鉄道てつどう用地ようちがですね、今いまも名古屋なごや市内しないのあっちこっちに
And amazingly, that railway land still remains here and there in Nagoya City

in its original

form
残のこっている場所ばしょがあると、その鉄道てつどう用地ようちをホームからだけではなくて地上ちじょうから
There are places where you can go and see that railway land not just from the platform but from the ground,
行いって見みれる場所ばしょがあるということで、それも実際じっさい駅えきを降おりて見みに行いってみようと思おもいます。
so I'd like to actually get off the train and go see it.

このね、笠寺駅かさでらえきもあの大府駅おおぶえきと同おなじように貨物かもつの専用せんよう発着はっちゃく線せん、はい、仕分しわけをするね、側線そくせんなんかがあります。

has the Kinuura Rinkai Railway beyond the Taketoyo Line, which also connects to factories, so it has a large site like this.

笠寺駅かさでらえきもね、この跨線橋こせんきょうから新幹線しんかんせんの様子ようすがよく見みえます。
At Kasadera Station too, you can see the Shinkansen well from this overpass.
で、面白おもしろいのはちょっとね、奥おくに向むかってカーブするように新幹線しんかんせん高架こうかがあるので、なんか猛もうスピードでくねって曲まがってくる新幹線しんかんせんの絵えが撮とれるんですよ。
And what's interesting is the Shinkansen viaduct curves a bit toward the back, so you can get a shot of the Shinkansen coming around the bend at tremendous speed.
笠寺駅かさでらえきの東口ひがしぐちにやってまいりました。

ここから歩あるきつつ、お散歩さんぽ鉄てつしつつ南方なんぽう貨物かもつ線せんの遺構いこうをたどっていきたいと思おもいます。
From here, I'll walk along while doing some train-spotting on foot, tracing the remains of the Nanpo Freight Line.
そもそも南方なんぽう貨物かもつ線せんどういう計画けいかくで進すすんでいたのかというと、本日ほんじつ私わたしが出発しゅっぱつしてきた大府駅おおぶえきが起点きてんとなっていました。
To begin with, what kind of plan the Nanpo Freight Line was being built under — Obu Station, where I started today, was its starting point.
そして大府駅おおぶえきから東海道本線とうかいどうほんせんに併設へいせつするような形かたちで複々線ふくふくせんを敷しいてここ笠寺駅かさでらえきまでやってきます。
And from Obu Station, quadruple tracks were to be laid alongside the Tokaido Main Line, coming all the way here to Kasadera Station.
今度こんどは笠かさ寺てらからそれで東海道とうかいどう新幹線しんかんせん沿ぞいに緩ゆるく弧こを描えがいて進すすみます。
Then from Kasadera, it would curve gently along the Tokaido Shinkansen in a loose arc.
で堀川ほりかわっていう大おおきい川かわがあるんですけど、
And there's a big river called the Horikawa, and

just past that river, leaving the Tokaido Shinkansen,
離はなれて南方なんぽう井い川かわっていう昔むかしね名古屋なごやに運河うんががあったんですけど、
it would separate and run straight along the south side of the Minami Igawa — there used to be a canal in Nagoya,
その運河うんがの南側みなみがわ
on the south side of that canal
に沿そうような形かたちでまっすぐ敷しいて
in a way that follows it, laid straight,
最終的さいしゅうてきにはえっとJR貨物かもつの名古屋貨物なごやかもつターミナル駅えきというところに接続せつぞくするというような計画けいかくがされて
and eventually, uh, connect to JR Freight's Nagoya Freight Terminal Station — that was the plan that was made
おりました。
It was planned like that.
総そう延長えんちょうだいたい20キロメートルぐらいのルートになる予定よていでした。
The total length was planned to be about 20 kilometers.
それが97%完成かんせいしたところで

工事こうじ凍結とうけつと
construction was frozen and
計画けいかく頓挫とんざという形かたちになってしまったんですけれども、なんでそんなことになってしまったのかっていう
the plan fell through, but leaving aside why that happened for a moment, let's go see with our own eyes how the remains of the Nanpo Freight Line survive in the town today.
ちょっとそのね理由りゆうは置おいといて、一旦いったん現在げんざいその南方なんぽう貨物かもつ線せんの遺構いこうがどのような形かたちで町中まちなかに残のこっているのかをこの目めで確認かくにんしに行いきましょう。

After crossing the Tokaido Main Line, it extends along the Shinkansen ahead.
東海道本線とうかいどうほんせんを越こえてからは前まえの新幹線しんかんせんに沿そうように伸のびていきます。

で、今いま上うえを走はしり去さっていきましたが、その横よこ、東海道とうかいどう新幹線しんかんせん沿ぞいの道端みちばたにもこんなに実じつに実みのったカキ？
I can't tell if it's persimmon or Job's tears, but when I was in kindergarten, the theme of my first school play was the Crab and the Monkey battle.
カキかハトムギか分わかんないんですけど、私わたし幼稚園ようちえんの時ときに初はじめてのお遊戯ゆうぎ会かいの題材だいざいがサルカニ合戦かっせんだったんですよ。
And in the Crab and Monkey battle, what role — there was the mortar, the bee, right?
でサルカニ合戦かっせんでじゃ何なん役やくっていうウス、ハチとかいましたよね。

で、笠かさ寺てらから大おおきく膨ふくらむように高架橋こうかきょうを伸のばして、で、ここね今いままた新幹線しんかんせんがババババ通かよってますけれどもすごい音おとだ。
So, extending the viaduct so it bulges out widely from Kasadera, and here, the Shinkansen is passing by right now, it's really loud.
高架橋こうかきょうの下したをくぐった後あとに並走へいそうしていくようなねそういう作つくりでした。

なので民間みんかんが公園こうえんにしたのかもしれないですね。
So maybe a private owner turned it into a park.

This Nanko Park was originally a canal called the Nanko Canal.

手段しゅだんはですね船ふねだったというわけで、南みなみ港こう運河うんがはですね中川運河なかがわうんがっていう大おおきな運河うんがが今いまでも。
was by boat, and the Nanko Canal connected to the large Nakagawa Canal that still exists today.
今でもあるんですけど、その運河うんがにこうつながるように、まあいろんな運河うんががね細こまかく支線しせんがあったんですよ。

そういう交通手段こうつうしゅだんがどんどん増ふえてきたら舟運しゅううんの必要性ひつようせいないよねっていうことで、これも1960年ねん代だいに埋うめ立たてられて現在げんざいは公園こうえんとなっております。
such means of transport increased, there was no need for water transport, so this was reclaimed in the 1960s and is now a park.
でこの運河うんがに沿そうようにして最終的さいしゅうてきに後うしろ全部ぜんぶこれ見みえてますけど、はい南北なんぼく貨物かもつ線せんは敷しかれる予定よていでした。
And along this canal, eventually all of this you see behind me, yes, the North-South Freight Line was planned to be laid.
ではこの南北なんぼく貨物かもつ線せんなぜ工事こうじが凍結とうけつしてしまったのかというところが皆様みなさま一番いちばん気きになるところだと思おもいます。
Now, why construction of this North-South Freight Line was frozen is what everyone is most curious about.
少すこしこの南北なんぼく貨物かもつ線せんの歴史れきしを振ふり返かえりつつその謎なぞを解とき明あかしていければなと思おもいます。
I'd like to look back on the history of this North-South Freight Line while unraveling that mystery.
この南北なんぼく貨物かもつ線せんが計画けいかくされたのは1937年ねんです。
This North-South Freight Line was planned in 1937.
その頃ころって日本にほんがどんどんどんどん戦争せんそうの世よの中なかに向むかっている時代じだいで、軍需品ぐんじゅひんがね増大ぞうだいしていたんですね。
That was a time when Japan was heading more and more toward a wartime society, and demand for military supplies was growing enormously.
もうどんどん戦争せんそうに必要ひつような荷物にもつを運はこばなければいけない。
They had to transport more and more cargo needed for the war.
そのためには貨物列車かもつれっしゃが足あしらなすぎるということで、貨物かもつ専用せんよう路線ろせんを作つくる計画けいかくが持もち上あがりました。
Because there were far too few freight trains for that, a plan to build a freight-only line was proposed.
それまで名古屋なごや駅えき近辺きんぺんの貨物列車かもつれっしゃってどういう運用うんようされていたかっていうと、名古屋なごやのすぐ南側みなみがわにですね、笹島駅えき
As for how freight trains around Nagoya Station were operated until then, just south of Nagoya there was Sasashima Station,
っていう貨物駅かもつえきがあったんですよ。
a freight station.
現在げんざいはね、ささしまライブ駅えきっていうあおなみ線せんの駅えきになっているんですけれども、あそこ一帯いったいがかつては貨物かもつの拠点きょてんでありました。
Now it's Sasashima Live Station on the Aonami Line, but that whole area was once a freight hub.
でその笹島駅えきに行いくのちょっとめんどくさくて、
And getting to that Sasashima Station was a bit troublesome,
大阪おおさかとか西側にしがわから行いくのであればそのままねすっと笹島駅えきに入いれるんですけれども、東京とうきょう方面ほうめんから来きた時ときってそのまま笹島
If you came from Osaka or the west, you could enter Sasashima Station smoothly, but when you came from the Tokyo direction, you couldn't enter Sasashima
駅えきに入いれなかったんですよ。
Station directly.
なので名古屋なごやをずっと
So, going far to the
北きたに行いったところに稲いね沢さわ操車場そうしゃじょうっていうまあ現在げんざいの稲沢駅いなざわえきのちょっとね北側きたがわに操車場そうしゃじょうがありました。
To the north of present-day Inazawa Station, there was a marshalling yard.
で
And
そこで機関車きかんしゃを付つけ替かえて折おり返かえしスイッチバックして名古屋なごやまでわざわざ戻もどってきてその先さきの笹島駅えきに入はいるっていう
There, they would change locomotives and switch back, deliberately coming all the way back to Nagoya and then entering Sasashima Station beyond it,
そういうね運用うんようのされ方かただったんです。
That was how the operation was done.
なので往復おうふくでだいたい22キロぐらいまあ言いい方かたあれですけど無駄むだに走はしってたということになります。
So for the round trip, about 22 kilometers was, so to speak, run wastefully.
なんで戦前せんぜんってそんな不便ふべんなところに貨物かもつ
Why they built the freight
の拠点きょてんを作つくったのかはちょっといまいちわかんなかったんですけど土地とちの関係かんけいとかあとは貨物かもつがこんなに増ふえるなんて思おもってもなかった。
hub in such an inconvenient place before the war, I don't really understand, but it may have been about land, or they never thought freight would increase this much.
なかったのかもしれないですね。
Maybe they didn't think so.
増ふえすぎた貨物列車かもつれっしゃは笹島
The overgrown number of freight trains could no longer be handled by Sasashima
駅えきおよび稲いね沢さわ操車場そうしゃじょうだけではさばききれなくなっていて非常ひじょうに逼迫ひっぱくした状態じょうたいでした。
Station and Inazawa Marshalling Yard alone, and they were in a very congested state.
そんな中なかで考かんがえられたのが南方なんぽう貨物かもつ線せんです。
What was conceived in that situation was the Nanpo Freight Line.
現行げんこうの笹島駅えきだけじゃなくていろんなところに貨物駅かもつえきを作つくろう。
Let's build freight stations in various places, not just the current Sasashima Station.
そして稲いね沢さわ操車場そうしゃじょうのような機関車きかんしゃの付つけ替かえとか
And let's also build a place where locomotive changes like at Inazawa Marshalling Yard can be
できる場所ばしょも作つくろうということで名古屋なごやの南側みなみがわに考かんがえられたのが南方なんぽう貨物かもつ線せんでした。
done, and what was conceived on the south side of Nagoya was the Nanpo Freight Line.
大だい府ふから笠かさ寺てらからそしてこの南方なんぽう運河うんが沿ぞいに走はしって最終的さいしゅうてきに笹島駅えきの南側みなみがわに新あたらしく名古屋貨物なごやかもつターミナル駅えきを作つくって
From Obu to Kasadera and then running along this Nanpo Canal, finally connecting to a newly built Nagoya Freight Terminal Station on the south side of Sasashima Station,
そこに接続せつぞくしようという考かんがえになります。
that was the idea.
これで旅客りょかくと貨物かもつも分わけられて移動いどうがよりスムーズになるぞと
With this, passengers and freight would be separated and movement would become smoother,
意気込いきごんだところで戦争せんそう激化げきかにより工事こうじね一旦いったんストップしちゃうんですよ。
Just as they were enthusiastic, the intensifying war caused construction to stop for a while.
まあ戦争せんそうになっちゃったということはことは仕方しかたないので、それが終おわったら工事こうじし始はじめようと終戦しゅうせんを待まちました。
Well, since war had broken out it couldn't be helped, so they waited for the end of the war to start construction.
で、
And,
戦争せんそうが終おわってみるとですね、高度経済成長こうどけいざいせいちょうに日本にほんはどんどんなっていって、戦前せんぜんよりもさらに貨物列車かもつれっしゃの重要度じゅうようどが増ましていったんです。
When the war ended, Japan was heading more and more into high economic growth, and freight trains became even more important than before the war.
よし、やっと工事こうじ再開さいかいできると
Okay, we can finally resume construction,
思おもったところなんですけれども、その時代じだいって日本にほんの一大いちだいプロジェクト、新幹線しんかんせん建設けんせつも進すすめられていたんです。
they thought, but at that time Japan's major project, the Shinkansen construction, was also underway.
まあ新幹線しんかんせんと貨物かもつ専用線せんようせん比較ひかくしちゃうとね、

この高架橋こうかきょうを建たてるための土地とちの買収ばいしゅうは100%終おわっていて、上うえの工事こうじも97%
Land acquisition to build this viaduct was 100% complete, and the overhead work was 97%
本当ほんとうに最後さいごの最後さいごあとちょっとぐらいのところまで完了かんりょうしていたんです。
It was completed to almost the very, very end, just a little more to go.
だけどその頃ころにですね、この地域住民ちいきじゅうみんからこんな声こえが上あがります。

3度さんど目めの工事こうじ中断ちゅうだんがされてからはですね住民じゅうみんと国鉄こくてつとの間あいだでいろんな議論ぎろんが交かわされました
After the third construction suspension, various discussions were held between residents and JNR
騒音そうおん対策たいさくのために継目つぎめの少すくないロングレール使つかいますとかもう再さいし最新式
They'd use long rails with few joints for noise control, and the newest
の防音壁ぼうおんへきとか、なんかコンクリート使つかいますとか、いろんなこう案あんが出だされて、やっと完成かんせいに向むけて動うごき出だしましょうっていうゴーサインが出でたんですよ。
soundproof walls, or use concrete, various proposals were made, and finally they got the go-ahead to move toward completion.
しかしね、もう時代じだいが変かわっちゃってたんです。
But, you know, the times had already changed.
いったいこの貨物かもつ専用線せんようせんが計画けいかくされたのって戦前せんぜんのことですから、それからもう40年ねん近ちかく時間じかん経たっちゃってたんですよ。
After all, this freight-only line was planned before the war, so nearly 40 years had already passed since then.
そうすると、もう交通網こうつうもうはどんどん発達はったつしてモータリゼーションが進すすんでですね、
By then, the transportation network had kept developing and motorization had advanced,

On top of that, in the final days of JNR,
末期まっきで、まあ新幹線しんかんせんのね設備投資せつびとうしとかいろんなものにあの借金しゃっきんしてインフラ整備せいびしてたりとかして国鉄こくてつもお金かねがなかった。
well, with investment in the Shinkansen and borrowing for all kinds of infrastructure work, JNR had no money either.
で最初さいしょの方ほうに建たて始はじめたこの高架橋こうかきょうってもうコンクリートの劣化れっかが進すすんでたんで、それの補修ほしゅう。
And the viaducts that were started first had already deteriorated in the concrete, so they needed repairs.
補修とかもしなきゃいけないってなると、さらに
If they had to do repairs and such, then even more
ね345億おく円えん掛かかったけれどもそれよりさらにお金かねがかかるっていうことで収入しゅうにゅうも見込みこめないし、それをね補修ほしゅうするお金かねもないし、
well, it had cost 34.5 billion yen, but it would cost even more than that, with no revenue expected, and no money to repair it either,
もう工事こうじ凍結とうけつするしかないということで残念ざんねんながら1983年ねん
so there was no choice but to freeze construction, and unfortunately in 1983
この貨物かもつ線せんの計画けいかくはまぼろしとなって終おわってしまいました。
this freight line plan ended as a phantom.
ちなみに国鉄こくてつ末期まっきに3度さんど目めの工事こうじが再開さいかいされたタイミングで

And when we come back, what we'll ride is the Aonami Line you can see on the opposite side.

railway, but now it's become a somewhat lonely line, called a hidden backwater in the city with only a single-car diesel railcar running,
路線ろせんになってしまっているんですけれども、
but originally,
元々もともとはこの城しろ北きた線せんも南方なんぽう貨物かもつ線せんと同おなじように貨物かもつのバイパス路線ろせんとして建設けんせつされたものでした。
this Jokoku Line was also built as a freight bypass line, just like the Nanpo Freight Line.
まあ南方なんぽう貨物かもつ線せんがあれば北方貨物線きたかたかもつせん、北きたの貨物かもつ線せんも線も計画けいかくされていて、そのうちの一部いちぶだったんですね。

and there are a lot of factories along the line around here too. There was also a company called Paloma earlier, and you could even glimpse Paloma containers.

like an Aeon, something like that, and around where that Leaf Walk is there was a large turntable where steam locomotives and such were switched around, apparently.

中京ちゅうきょう工業地帯こうぎょうちたいっていうと三重県みえけんとかの方ほうもあのそこら辺へん一帯いったいもそうなんですけど、
When you say the Chukyo Industrial Zone, that includes Mie Prefecture and that whole area,
四日よっか市いちの石油せきゆコンビナートとかああいうところから石油せきゆ積つんで西にしへ東ひがしへ持もってくんだな。
they load oil from places like the Yokkaichi oil complex and carry it west and east.
で、空そらのタンクがちょうど運はこばれてあそこで待機たいきしてるのかもしれないですね。
And maybe the empty tanks have just been brought in and are waiting over there.

In the past there were apparently factory-only sidings going right into the factories, but now those are mostly abolished, and freight trucks.

It seems they bring it by truck or such to the station that serves as the station.

It's located a little away from the passenger platforms.

the Kintetsu and Meitetsu tracks are also packed tightly together, so

on the disused freight yards, residential areas and exhibition centers were built, and it became quite an active area for people movement.
ただ貨物かもつ専用線せんようせんしかなくて人々ひとびとは路線ろせんバスしか移動手段いどうしゅだんがなかったので2004年ねんにあおなみ線せんが旅客りょかくを開始かいししました。
But there was only a freight-only line and people had only route buses for transport, so in 2004 the Aonami Line started passenger service.

もう大分おおいたから笠かさ寺てら以外いがいの独立どくりつした南みなみ港こうキャンプ地ちの区間くかんはほぼほぼ歩あるいてきましたからね。
I've walked pretty much the entire independent Nanko freight line section from Obu to Kasadera.
15キロぐらい、15キロ近ちかくあの散歩さんぽしてきました。
I've walked about 15 km, nearly 15 km.
もうちょっとで右みぎの股関節こかんせつが死しにかけですが、すごいねこの光景こうけい見みれて良よかったです。

By the way, if you follow the Nakagawa Canal upstream, you get to the Sasashima freight station we passed earlier, the old Sasashima
駅えき貨物駅かもつえきに繋つながっております。
station, the freight station.
かつて運搬うんぱんの主流しゅりゅうは船ふねだったので名古屋なごや港こうから積つんだ荷物にもつを船ふねで笹島駅えきまで持もって行いってそこで列車れっしゃに積つむという流ながれだった。
Back then, the main means of transport was by boat, so cargo loaded at Nagoya Port was taken by boat to Sasashima Station and loaded onto trains there.
流れだったんですね。
That was how it worked.
現在げんざいではその船ふねの役割やくわりをトラックが担になっているといったところです。
Nowadays, trucks have taken over that role of the boats.
で、中川を越えて向むこう側がわに行いくと、これと全まったく同おなじ構造物こうぞうぶつ。
And, crossing over the Nakagawa to the other side, there's the exact same structure as this.
さっきあの稲いね沢さわ総社そうじゃ町ちょうに行いく前まえにいた反対側はんたいがわの南みなみ港こう公園こうえんに繋つながっております。
It connects to the Nanko Park on the opposite side where we were before going to Inazawa Sosha-cho.
はい、南みなみ港こう公園こうえんということはここも全部ぜんぶね南みなみ港こう運河うんがでした。
Yes, since it's called Nanko Park, all of this here was the Nanko Canal.
今いま全部ぜんぶ埋うめ立たてられてますけどね。
It's all been reclaimed now, though.
ここも運河うんがです。
This was also a canal.
で、運河うんがからちょっと残のこったここが今いまなんちゃら運河うんがという名前なまえになっているんですね。
And this bit left over from the canal is now called the whatsit canal.

So, the mysterious space left beside the tracks.
それは戦前せんぜんに計画けいかくされていた貨物かもつの単独たんどく線せんの遺構いこうでした。
It was the remains of a freight-only line planned before the war.
今いまでも街中まちじゅうにこうしてなんかローマの遺跡いせきみたいな感かんじで、それはちょっと言いい過すぎか。
Even now, left like this in the city, kind of like Roman ruins — well, that's a bit of an exaggeration.
まあそれは過言かごんかもしれませんけれども、まるでそのなんか芸術的げいじゅつてきな遺跡いせきのように残のこされております。
