Hello everyone.
Welcome to the Japanese podcast.
Nice to meet you.
Today, let's think together slowly about everyday spending and saving.
Yes, it's a very familiar topic.
Suddenly, do you clearly remember how much you spent at the convenience store yesterday?
Ah, I don't remember that at all.
Right.
I think many people probably don't remember.
Yes.
But when you order a 500-yen cake at a cafe, you hesitate a lot, don't you?
Yes, I do hesitate.
You end up thinking it's expensive.
Today, let's look at this strange human psychology.
Please do.
It's money we use every day, but something very complex and interesting is happening in our minds.
That's right.
This time, it's based on notes we collected and conversations about various people's shopping.
はい。
Yes.
Saving money feels reassuring, yet have you ever wondered why spending money is so difficult and scary?
Putting money in a piggy bank makes you happy, but when it's time to actually use it, you hit the brakes.
Yes.
I think this is a feeling many people have.
First, let me introduce an interesting everyday episode from one person.
はい。
Yes.
What kind of story is it?
On a day off, that person was enjoying tea with friends at a cafe.
Nice.
There, they opened their savings app on their smartphone and looked at the graph.
They were checking how much money they had in the bank.
That's right.
Looking at the app, they were very happy thinking, great, my money increased again this month.
Because you can clearly see the result of your hard work.
Yes.
It leads to a sense of security.
But right after that, they took a strange action.
What did they do?
Thinking they'd like something sweet, they looked at the cafe menu.
はい。
Yes.
And they tried to order a 500-yen cake.
Sounds delicious.
But they thought, hmm, 500 yen for this cake might be a bit expensive, hesitated, and ended up not ordering it.
I see.
Even though they had just seen on the app that their money had increased a lot.
That's right.
They should have had plenty of money.
And yet they couldn't spend just 500 yen.
はい。
Yes.
But the more interesting part starts here.
There's more?
I thought she would hold back at the cafe and just go straight home, but she stopped by a convenience store on the way back.
Oh, don't tell me.
That's exactly what happened.
She apparently bought several 300-yen snacks and went home.
She couldn't buy the cake at the cafe, yet she easily bought the convenience store snacks.
That's right.
The total amount was probably the same as or more than the cake.
はい。
Yes.
It's completely contradictory.
Don't you think this is very similar to when you're on a diet?
A diet?
What do you mean?
At a restaurant, you firmly resolve that you're on a diet today and resist a big dessert.
はい。
Yes.
That happens a lot.
But after going home, you end up eating the small chocolates in the kitchen drawer.
Yes.
And it's just like eating not just one, but two or three of them, right?
That's a very easy-to-understand analogy.
はい。
Yes.
You can resist in a special place like a restaurant, but you can't resist in an everyday place like home.
Exactly.
The exact same psychology is at work in how we spend money.
Yes.
Why do cake and convenience store snacks feel so different?
A big reason is the difference in how money looks to us.
How it looks?
はい。
Yes.
First, let's think about the psychology when she was looking at the savings app.
Yes.
Seeing the number in the savings app go down feels like losing a lot of game points.
Oh, like losing points?
That's right.
So the brain reacts with fear.
I've heard that humans feel the pain of losing money more strongly than the joy of gaining money.
Exactly right.
It's said to be felt about twice as strongly.
Twice?
はい。
Yes.
And the cafe cake is a somewhat special purchase, right?
Yes, since you don't eat it every day.
So when buying it, you clearly become aware that your money is decreasing.
I see, so it feels negative, like losing the points you worked so hard to collect.
In other words, precisely because she had just seen her money grow in the savings app, her desire not to ruin that number became stronger.
That's right.
But what about shopping at the convenience store?
Yeah, for many people, stopping by a convenience store on the way home has already become a small daily habit.
Exactly that.
Because it's a habit, you don't think deeply in your head that you're spending your precious money now.
I see, so the brain mistakenly thinks this is just part of the everyday scenery.
Yes, it doesn't set off an alarm.
So even when money is decreasing in the same way, you don't feel much fear at a convenience store.
Yes, whether you're conscious of even a small purchase or not changes your hesitation this much.
That's interesting.
So here's a question that comes to mind.
Yes, what is it?
When do we, who hesitate over such small purchases, find it easy to spend money?
Actually, there are roughly two patterns where we end up spending money easily.
Two?
Yes, two completely different situations.
According to our notes, everyone hesitates a lot when buying clothes or adding a drink at a cafe, right?
Yes, because we think about whether we really need it.
But for example, there was talk that we can boldly spend money on big things like a trip to Hawaii.
That's the first pattern.
Something special like travel.
It's strange even though the trip costs many times more.
はい。
Yes.
And the other pattern is when we're tired, right?
That's right.
When you come home late at night very tired from work.
You think 'whatever' and impulsively buy expensive clothes online.
Yes.
Haven't you all had the experience of accidentally buying something you don't need late at night?
Yes, I have.
I have too.
But travel and shopping when tired have the same result, right?
In both cases you're spending money easily.
Isn't it for the same reason, like wanting to get rid of stress or refresh yourself?
Certainly, the feeling of wanting to feel better is common.
Yes.
But what's happening inside your mind is completely different.
What's different?
The way the brain is used is different.
First, for something special like travel, the purpose for spending money is very clear.
Like wanting to see the beautiful sea or eat delicious food?
Yes, a strong purpose.
When the purpose is clear, you can firmly explain to yourself the reason for spending money.
I see.
You can convince yourself that this is an important experience for my life.
I see.
So that's why it's easy to spend even a large amount of money.
That's right.
It's a feeling of using it correctly as a ticket for yourself.
はい。
Yes.
Then how do you think it's different when you're tired?
Hmm, I wonder why.
When you're tired, the brain's energy for thinking is completely at zero.
Zero?
Yes, think of our brain's energy as being the same as a smartphone battery.
Battery, huh.
That's easy to understand.
When I wake up in the morning, the battery is at 100%.
Yes, you're full of energy.
But we make many choices throughout the day.
That's right.
Like what clothes to wear, or what to have for lunch.
Yes, every time you make a small choice like which email to reply to first, the battery drains a little.
No, by the time you get home at night, the battery is down to 1%.
That's exactly right.
Normally, when you're feeling fine, you can calculate correctly even when looking at an online shopping screen.
You can think, do I really need this right now?
Yes, you can decide to hold off because you'll need money next month too.
Right.
But when the battery is empty, you can't do that troublesome calculation anymore.
In other words, your brain is screaming that it doesn't want to think anymore.
Yes, and then you end up choosing the easiest path, pressing the buy button.
So the reason we spend money when we're tired is because we're giving our judgment a rest.
はい。
Yes.
It's not because you have a purpose, it's the result of stopping thinking.
And then the next morning, when the battery has recovered, you regret it and wonder why you bought such a thing.
That's exactly the pattern.
That's interesting.
I now understand well why we spend money when we're tired.
はい。
Yes.
Now let's think about when the battery is at 100% and you're feeling great.
When you're in a normal state.
Uh, why do we feel scared to spend money when we're in a normal state?
That's the point I want to think about most deeply today.
In the notes there was a story about the online shopping cart loop.
Yes, there was.
Someone felt a great sense of achievement watching the graph on their savings app go up.
It's a state where saving money has become a hobby.
はい。
Yes.
But at the same time, there were things they wanted.
Right.
So they put items in the cart when shopping online.
はい。
Yes.
But they hate to see their money decrease, so they can't press the buy button and leave it for days.
So the desire to buy and the desire not to reduce money are fighting each other.
Exactly.
And in the end, they close the screen without buying.
はい。
Yes.
But after a while, they put another item in the cart and again don't buy it.
It's a state of staying stuck at the stage before buying.
They say they keep repeating this loop of putting things in the cart but not buying.
It's a loop that's hard to break out of.
はい。
Yes.
But I have a slight question.
What is it?
Saving money and feeling a sense of achievement as the numbers grow is wonderful.
Yes, that's a really good thing, isn't it?
But if you never spend that money, then what is that money actually for?
Ah, that's a fundamental question.
It feels like it's just the same as a game of collecting numbers.
That's a very sharp observation.
It makes you think about the true meaning of money.
That's right.
In our material, there was a quote from a friend that captures this psychology perfectly.
What did it say?
They said, "Spending money is a little scary.
He said, "But if you don't use it, in the end you don't know what the money is for."
If you don't use it, you don't know what it's for.
Those are very profound words.
Yes, money is originally just a convenient tool meant to be used.
A tool?
Yes, it's just a ticket to eat delicious food, travel with friends, and make your own life better.
Scissors exist to cut paper, and pens exist to write words.
Money is the same.
Exactly.
Because it's a tool, its value is only created when you use it.
So it exists to be used.
はい。
Yes.
But if you just keep staring at the numbers in your savings app on your phone, the purpose of money changes before you know it.
How does it change?
Money changes from a convenient tool for spending into a precious number that must never be allowed to decrease.
I see, so instead of being a tool, protecting the number itself becomes the goal.
Yes, when money becomes just something to stare at, spending it feels like a failure.
That's very interesting as human psychology, but it's also a little sad at the same time.
Yes, it is.
Indeed.
All of you listeners must be working hard every day too.
Yes.
It's really such a waste of life to be too scared to use the tool you worked so hard to earn.
はい。
Yes.
That's why we need to change our way of thinking a little about spending money.
So after we finally take the plunge and spend the money we've been saving, what happens to our hearts?
I wonder whether we'll regret it or feel refreshed.
はい。
Yes.
The material had two episodes about people who mustered up the courage to spend money.
The first one was about a trip, right?
Yes.
There was a friend who kept saying they wanted to go someday, but kept putting off the trip.
They were probably holding back because they were afraid of their money decreasing a lot.
That's procrastination that many people experience.
Yes, it's very common.
But one day that friend suddenly said, "If I don't go now, I'll never go," and finally went on the trip.
They took action.
How was the trip?
When they came back, they looked truly, truly happy.
They said it became the best memory.
That's good to hear.
But the interesting part is what happened right after that.
My friend said with a smile, okay, I have to start saving again from tomorrow.
I see.
Right after fully enjoying the trip, they're already thinking about saving for the next one.
That's right.
And the second episode is about new shoes.
Unlike a trip, shoes remain in physical form every day.
はい。
Yes.
There was a person who finally bought slightly expensive shoes they had been hesitating about for a long time.
Yes.
Right after buying them, they said they were very nervous, thinking, oh, maybe they were too expensive after all, or maybe I shouldn't have bought them.
They still feel a bit anxious, after all.
But now they wear those shoes and go to work normally every day.
They said they're comfortable and convenient.
Both episodes show very real human emotions.
Before using the money they hesitate, and right after using it they worry if it was the right choice.
But in the end, both turned out to be successes.
The trip turned into a wonderful memory, and the shoes became a useful tool that helps with daily life.
In both cases, it was really good that they were brave and spent the money.
はい。
Yes.
Here we can notice one very important thing.
What is it?
People often say that saving and growing money is hard, right?
はい。
Yes.
Even if you go to a bookstore, there are many books about saving lined up.
Since we were children, we've been taught that saving is a good thing.
Of course, saving money requires patience and is not easy.
Yes.
But actually, spending money well is just as difficult as saving and takes courage, it's a skill.
Spending money is also a skill?
Isn't it just paying money at a store?
No, it's not just paying.
You think about what is truly valuable for yourself right now.
I see.
You choose correctly whether buying this will truly make you happy, and you spend the money bravely without fear.
That's quite difficult.
Yes, this is an advanced skill that you can't do without practice.
Now that you mention it, we've practiced saving money a lot since we were children.
Yes.
But we haven't really practiced how to spend money well.
It's the same as riding a bicycle.
Even if you read a book and know how a bicycle works, you can't ride it unless you actually practice pedaling.
Saving is like reading a book, and spending money is like actually pedaling.
That's right.
It's natural that it's scary and you can't do it well because you haven't practiced.
I see, that makes perfect sense.
はい。
Yes.
So we can say that both the friend who went on the trip and the person who bought the shoes were scared at first, but they were brave and practiced the skill of spending.
Exactly.
Only when you actually use it does money change from mere numbers into a tool that enriches your life.
Because it's a skill, it's important to practice using it well little by little.
Yes, I really think so.
When you think about it that way, money that just sits there with no plan to ever use it is kind of a strange thing.
It certainly is strange.
What exactly is the number in everyone's savings app on their smartphones there for, and what is it waiting for?
That is a slightly startling question.
Yes, please think about it just a little the next time you all open your savings app.
Well then, let's stop here for today.
またね。
See you.
