I'm gonna teach you some slang and some phrasal verbs about hook.

So if we just use the word hook in kind of a literally literary

Okay, the first thing that you write when you're reading an an article or you're watching a TikTok video, you want something.

It's like, oh, I want to watch that.
「ああ、あれ見たいな」って感じ。
What What's happening?
何が起きてるの？って。
Or when you're reading something, you want it to be something that grabs your attention.
それから何かを読んでいるときも、注意を引くようなものであってほしいんだ。
This is called a hook.
これが hook と呼ばれるものだよ。
It can be an interesting question, or it can be an idea.
面白い質問だったり、アイデアだったりするよ。
And a lot of writers will write something really crazy, and you're like, "What?

" So if you're reading articles on the internet.

They can make some crazy statements, and you're like, "Oh my god, I gotta read that," and that's the hook.

That's when they get you.

So, in the literary or the creative way, a hook, it's just an attention grabber.

In music, do you like music?

Love music.

Music, a hook in music is a catchy phrase.

So these are the words or the lyrics or a riff.

Now, a riff is like part of the guitar.

Let's say that normally, it's part of the guitar.

So maybe you hear the start of a song, the the guitar of the song.

You're like, "Oh, what a great riff, man!

" That's the hook.

Also, it can be the lyrics.
あと、歌詞の場合もあるよ。
Do you do karaoke?

But the lyrics.
でも歌詞ね。
If you go to karaoke and you're like, oh, I love this song, and then you put it on, like,

and then the chorus kicks in, and like, ah, oh, dancing on the ceiling, right?
それでサビが始まって、なんか、ああ、ほら、ダンシング・オン・ザ・シーリング、だよね？
So, the chorus, the part that gets repeated in the song, is part of the lyrics.

Lyrics are the words.

This can sometimes be the hook, and this is the thing that everyone likes to scream and shout, woo!

So, we have music writing and the media videos for the hook.

Now we're going to get into the phrasal verbs.

Hook up。
This phrasal verb we use quite a lot, but it kind of has two meanings.

You can.

Hook up to meet someone, so like call my friend.
Hook upは誰かに会うため、だから友達に電話するみたいに。
Hey, want to hook up later?
ねえ、後でhook upしない？
Also, we're changing this to link up.
あと、これをlink upに変えてるの。
I don't know.

My friend said that to me the other day.

He's like, Ronnie, want to link up?

And I was like, What is this new slang you're saying, Arb?

So, to hook up with someone means to meet them casually,

or it can also mean that you're meeting the person just for sex, like a sex friend.

So your friend could say, Hey, let's hook up later tonight, and you're like, Okay, what are we doing?

Or maybe your friend's like, Oh, hey, guess what?

I hooked up with Robbie last night, and that would be the sexual part of it, because that's what Robbie does.

So with our phrasal verbs, they keep on getting bigger and bigger, longer and longer.

Usually, electronic devices.

You can hook up computers.

Okay, what is it?

To hook someone up with something.
To hook someone up with something。
Okay, let's do that again.
よし、もう一度やってみよう。
To hook someone up with something, so I'd be like, "Hey, hook me up with a beer." So this means you just give someone something.
誰かに何かを融通する、という意味で、例えば「ねえ、ビールちょうだいよ」みたいに使うんだ。つまり、誰かに何かをあげるってことだよ。
So if your friend's like, "Hey, hook me up with your phone," doesn't have a hook.

Are you a fish?

It just means, "Hey, give me your phone.

Hook me up, man." That's also pretty drug related.

Now we had a kind of a giggle about this one.

If you are off the hook for something, it means you're not responsible for something.

So maybe you have a family dinner, and you don't want to go, but your daughter is sick, and like, oh, guess what?

I can't go.

I'm sorry because Elisa's sick.

So always like.

You don't have to go.

The other meaning of this, which is where we got our giggles, in about the year 2000s.

If something was off the hook, yo, it means it was like really cool.

So this makes sense.
だからこれは分かりやすいよね。
If off the hook means you're not responsible for something, if you're on the hook,
off the hook が何かに責任がないって意味なら、on the hook なら、
it means You're responsible for something, so, man, I'm on the hook with my boss.
何かに責任があるって意味で、だから「やばい、上司に頼まれちゃってさ」みたいに使うんだ。
I got to work overtime, and I think this comes from like fishing things because, like, you're fishing your car.
残業しなきゃいけなくて、これは釣りから来てると思うんだ、だってほら、車を釣るみたいな感じで。
You're like, oh my god, you're so you're on the hook.
「ああもう、君はまさに on the hook だよ」みたいな。
You're like, I'm a fish.

Fish don't work; they just swim around.

Anyways, off the hook, you are not responsible for something.

On the hook, you're responsible, and we don't have a slang translation of that.
on the hook は責任があるってことで、こっちにはスラング的な訳はないんだ。
We don't say like, oh man, that was on the hook.
「ああ、あれは on the hook だった」なんて言わないよね。
It doesn't mean it wasn't cool.
クールじゃなかったって意味じゃないんだ。
Just never mind.

The two thousands didn't exist, and then we have hooked on.
2000年代なんて存在しなかったことにして、それから hooked on があるね。
When I was a kid, we had a TV.

And they teach you like the P H sound is an F and the sh sound is kind of what we're doing here.

Talking about the two thousands, prostitutes.
