Hello, I'm Jill at Invid, and today's lesson is a rather advanced lesson on word order changes, also known as word order inversion, which happens after certain words and phrases, which we have in red here on the left.
こんにちは、Invidのジルです。今日のレッスンは、語順の入れ替え、いわゆる語順の倒置に関する少し高度な内容です。これは、左側の赤字で示した特定の単語やフレーズの後に起こります。
And this is something that it's a little bit unusual.
これは少し珍しいものです。
It sounds a bit strange.
少し奇妙に聞こえるかもしれません。
It's a rather almost poetic kind of style.
どちらかといえば詩的なスタイルです。
Something that you'd see more in writing than in speaking.
話し言葉よりも書き言葉で見かけることが多いでしょう。
If people spoke like this, it would sound a little bit unusual, a little bit strange, unless there actors in a play that was written a hundred years ago or or more, then you would hear that sort of thing.
もし人々がこのように話せば、少し変わった、奇妙な響きになるでしょう。100年以上前に書かれた劇の俳優でもない限り、そういった話し方はあまり耳にしません。
And also, if you're reading a novel or a story that was written quite a long time ago, you might see these kinds of word orders written in in the story in a book.
また、かなり昔に書かれた小説や物語を読んでいると、本の中でこうした語順を目にすることがあるかもしれません。
So it's it's a useful thing to know about, and if you ever need to use it yourself, it's a useful thing to to be able to do if you want to write in a certain style.
ですから、知っておくと役立ちますし、もし自分自身で使う必要があれば、特定のスタイルで書きたいときに使えると便利です。
So okay, so let's have a look at the examples.
それでは、例を見ていきましょう。
So if you start a sentence with never, that's when you have to change the word order, and instead of saying if you started with I, I have never seen, then it's I have never seen.
文を「never（決して～ない）」で始める場合、語順を変える必要があります。「I have never seen（私は一度も見たことがない）」と始める代わりに、語順を入れ替えるのです。
But if you start the sentence with never, maybe for emphasis, it's more dramatic in a way.
しかし、強調のために文を「never」で始めると、ある意味でより劇的になります。
Never have I seen, and it's a sort of strong dramatic statement.
「Never have I seen（見たことがない）」となり、力強く劇的な表現になります。
So never have I seen, rather than never I have seen.
ですから、「never I have seen」ではなく「never have I seen」となります。
So you can start with I have, I have never seen.
「I have never seen」と始めることもできます。
But if you start the sentence with never, you have to change the order of I have to have I.
しかし、文を「never」で始める場合は、「I have」の順序を「have I」に変えなければなりません。
Never have I seen such a lovely flower.
Never have I seen such a lovely flower.（これほど美しい花は見たことがない。）
Okay, so this is the same kind of idea all the way through, where where reversing some of the words.
さて、これは全体を通して同じ考え方で、いくつかの単語を入れ替えています。
So similarly, then only then did I realize.
同様に、「only then did I realize（その時初めて気づいた）」となります。
I suppose if you're if you're not going to start the sentence with only then.
もし「only then」で文を始めない場合を考えてみましょう。
You'd say I realized then who she was, and then you don't even need the auxiliary verb did.
「I realized then who she was（その時、彼女が誰だか気づいた）」と言うでしょうし、その場合は助動詞の「did」すら必要ありません。
But because we've started only then did I realize.
しかし、「only then」で始めたので、「did I realize」となります。
So only then you wouldn't say only then I realized.
ですから、「only then」の後に「only then I realized」とは言いません。
It doesn't sound quite right.
それでは少し不自然に聞こえます。
You have to use did with it.
それにはdidを使わなければなりません。
Only then did I realize who she was.
その時初めて、彼女が誰なのか分かりました。
If you meet somebody famous and you don't really recognize them at first, but then when the person begins to speak, oh, you recognize the voice, and then only then did I realize who she was—a famous actress, maybe.
もし有名人に会って、最初は誰だか分からなくても、その人が話し始めた時に声で気づく、その時初めて彼女が誰なのか、例えば有名な女優だと気づくのです。
Okay.
分かりました。
Again, it's more dramatic.
繰り返しになりますが、より劇的な表現です。
Only then did I realize.
その時初めて気づいたのです。
Okay.
分かりました。
So then this one, not only, and then with a but somewhere in the sentence.
次は「not only」で、文のどこかに「but」が入る形です。
So, not only is she a singer, but she's an artist too.
彼女は歌手であるだけでなく、アーティストでもあります。
So, if you weren't beginning the sentence with not only, you'd say she is not only a singer, but also an artist.
もし文頭を「not only」で始めないなら、「she is not only a singer, but also an artist」と言うでしょう。
But that doesn't sound quite so good.
でも、それだとあまり響きが良くありません。
So it sounds better to begin with not only.
ですから「not only」で始める方が響きが良いのです。
Not only is she a singer.
彼女は歌手であるだけでなく。
I think the the the order the words come in, the the rhythm of it, the shape of it, sounds better this way.
言葉の並び順やリズム、形が、この方が良く聞こえるのだと思います。
Not only is she a singer, but she's an artist too.
彼女は歌手であるだけでなく、アーティストでもあります。
So the words kind of come at the right moment.
言葉がちょうど良いタイミングで出てくる感じです。
It sounds better.
その方が響きが良いですね。
Okay.
分かりました。
Then this word—it's a bit unusual—seldom, but it means not often, not very often.
次は少し珍しい単語ですが、「seldom」で、「めったに～ない」という意味です。
So seldom means not often.
つまり「seldom」は「めったに～ない」という意味です。
Seldom have I heard such a beautiful song.
これほど美しい歌はめったに聞いたことがありません。
So you could start with I have seldom heard, and you would have a different word order.
「I have seldom heard」で始めることもできますが、語順が変わります。
So if you start with seldom, you've got to have I have reversed instead of I have seldom heard.
「seldom」で始めるなら、「I have」を入れ替えて「have I」にする必要があります。
It seldom have I heard such a beautiful song, but that's a very sort of old-fashioned sounding style.
「Seldom have I heard such a beautiful song」となりますが、これはかなり古風な響きのスタイルです。
You would read it in a book, I think, or hear it in a play that was written many years ago.
本で読んだり、何年も前に書かれた劇の中で聞いたりするような表現だと思います。
But you wouldn't hear people saying it.
でも、日常会話で人が言っているのを聞くことはないでしょう。
I don't think in nowadays in everyday conversation.
現代の日常会話では使わないと思います。
Okay, and the next one, little, did I know how my life would change?
次は「Little did I know how my life would change?」です。
So, without little, you would say I didn't know because little is a kind of negative.
「little」を使わなければ「I didn't know」と言うでしょう。「little」は否定的な意味合いを持つからです。
I didn't know how my life would change, but little did I know.
「I didn't know how my life would change」ですが、「little did I know」と表現します。
It's quite a dramatic way of saying it when something, a big change happens in your life.
人生に大きな変化が起こった時に使う、かなり劇的な言い方です。
Little did I know when I walked into that room and met a certain person, how my life would change.
あの部屋に入ってある人と出会った時、自分の人生がどう変わるかなんて、少しも知りませんでした。
Okay.
分かりました。
So again, little did I know is a sort of rather dramatic way of speaking.
「little did I know（知る由もなかった）」というのは、少し大げさな言い方です。
Okay, next one.
さて、次です。
In no way can we agree to that.
In no way can we agree to that.（それに同意することは決してできません）
So instead of just saying we can't agree to that, this is much stronger.
単に「同意できない」と言う代わりに、これはずっと強い表現です。
In no way, it's much more definite.
In no wayは、より断定的です。
In no way can we agree to that.
In no way can we agree to that.（それに同意することは決してできません）
So quite dramatic, really, and very strong emphasis.
ですから、かなりドラマチックで、非常に強い強調になります。
Saying no way, no way, we're not going to do that.
「絶対にダメ、絶対にダメ、そんなことはしない」と言っているようなものです。
So okay, and then similarly, in no way and on no account mean the same thing.
さて、同様に、in no wayとon no accountは同じ意味です。
So on no account should we sign that contract, meaning we should not sign that contract.
つまり、on no account should we sign that contractは、その契約書に署名すべきではないという意味です。
So on no account, there's the negative no, we should not.
on no accountには否定のnoが含まれており、「すべきではない」という意味になります。
But on no account should we, instead of we should, should we sign that contract?
しかし、we shouldではなく、should we sign that contract?という語順になります。
Okay.
わかりました。
Then, only when I got home, did I.
次は、Only when I got home, did I.（家に帰って初めて、私は～した）です。
Again, we've got a did did I with only then and now only when, only when I got home, did I realize what I'd done.
ここでも、only thenやonly whenの後にdid Iという倒置が使われています。Only when I got home, did I realize what I'd done.（家に帰って初めて、自分が何をしたのか気づいた）
So how would you say it more normally?
では、より普通に言うならどうなるでしょうか？
I only realized when I got home what I'd done, but it doesn't sound quite so good.
I only realized when I got home what I'd done.（家に帰った時に初めて自分がしたことに気づいた）ですが、これだと少し響きが劣ります。
Only when I got home did I realize what I'd done.
Only when I got home did I realize what I'd done.（家に帰って初めて、自分が何をしたのか気づいた）
So it's still a bit poetic.
やはり少し詩的な響きがありますね。
It doesn't sound really like everyday speaking.
日常会話という感じはあまりしません。
Okay.
わかりました。
Right, and then only by regular study can you.
次は、Only by regular study can you.（定期的に勉強して初めて、あなたは～できる）です。
Instead of you can, can you improve your English?
you canではなく、can you improve your English?（英語を上達させることができる）となります。
So, without starting here, you'd say you can only improve your English by regular study.
ここから始めない場合は、You can only improve your English by regular study.（定期的に勉強することでしか英語は上達しない）と言うでしょう。
But starting with only by, it's more.
しかし、Only byで始めると、より強調されます。
It gets your attention straight away.
すぐに注意を引くことができます。
Only by regular study can you improve your English.
Only by regular study can you improve your English.（定期的に勉強して初めて、英語を上達させることができる）
Okay.
わかりました。
So next one.
では次です。
No sooner, no sooner had I left.
No sooner, no sooner had I left.（～するやいなや、私は出発した）
Instead of I had left, it's had I left.
I had leftではなく、had I leftとなります。
No sooner had I left, left the house.
No sooner had I left, left the house.（家を出るやいなや）
Perhaps when it began to rain.
おそらく雨が降り出した時でしょう。
So the more normal way of saying that would be just to say, as soon as I had left the house, or as soon as I left the house, it began to rain.
より一般的な言い方をするなら、As soon as I had left the house, or as soon as I left the house, it began to rain.（家を出るやいなや、雨が降り出した）と言うでしょう。
So no sooner.
ですから、no soonerは。
It's a bit more poetic, I suppose.
少し詩的な表現だと思います。
Okay, and then there's this one that you use instead of saying if.
わかりました。次はifの代わりとして使う表現です。
So if I had known what would happen next, if I had known, I wouldn't have gone to that party.
If I had known what would happen next, if I had known, I wouldn't have gone to that party.（次に何が起こるか知っていたら、そのパーティーには行かなかっただろう）
But instead of if, you just start with had I known.
しかし、ifの代わりに、Had I known.（もし知っていたら）で始めるだけです。
Instead of using the word if at all, instead of I had known, it's had I known.
「if」という言葉を全く使わずに、「I had known」の代わりに「had I known」を使います。
Had I known what would happen next, I wouldn't have gone to that party.
次に何が起こるか知っていたら、あのパーティーには行かなかっただろう。
Okay, so I hope that's a useful way of perhaps expanding your knowledge of English and and some unusual constructions that are perhaps a little bit old-fashioned or poetic.
さて、これが皆さんの英語の知識を広げ、少し古風あるいは詩的かもしれない珍しい構文を学ぶのに役立つ方法であれば幸いです。
But things that you might recognise if you're reading a certain type of book, like a novel, or or reading a play, perhaps where people are speaking in a certain style.
しかし、小説のような特定の種類の本を読んだり、登場人物がある特定のスタイルで話す劇を読んだりする際に、目にするかもしれない表現です。
