Nuanced.
It's one of those words that the internet is allergic to.
Generally speaking, for any given topic online, it's either really good or bad.
No in between.
Case in point: earlier this week, OpenAI, which I'd say is probably one of the most hated companies, did something actually remarkable.
They claim to have over 300 examples of massive progress towards major unsolved mathematics problems, and in some cases, they're fully solved.
Mathematicians around the world are going crazy in a positive way.
This is absolutely an earthquake.
Oh my god, I am just sitting beside myself.
I'm having an out of body experience here.
I'm shaking my own hand.
I'm outside my body.
That's how excited I am about all this.
And in a negative way, there's a difference between having mathematicians using AI to solve problems and then presenting them and like gaining insight on them, than it is for a multi-billion-dollar company to basically just go out there and just try and solve every single maths problem there is, not give clear presentation of the work and just say, go on, guys.
I would argue that that's quite a lot worse.
If these proofs are later found to be independently true, this could be one of the greatest moments in mathematics history.
But I know what some of you are thinking.
Hey, you hate AI, so what's going on here?
Well, that's what I mean by nuance.
Not everything is a binary, and two things can be true at once.
So on the one hand, are LLM frontier labs losing billions of dollars because people don't want to pay a lot of money for something that they can get elsewhere in the form of open source?
Yes.
Is the data center industry an irresponsible financial risk?
Yes.
Are AI diffusion models destroying the human arts?
Yes.
Is AI being used as a shortcut by lazy people to scam, trick, and steal from others?
Yes.
Are the de facto leaders of the AI industry, especially Sam Altman, playing politics and behaving quite recklessly with their decisions?
Also, yes.
You know, I think AI will probably, like, most likely, sort of lead to the end of the world.
But in the meantime, there will be great companies created with serious machine learning.
We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency.
But then there's the other side—the stuff that AI can do that's actually kind of good.
I've said for the better part of a year now that AI coding and high maths are some of the strongest points of LLMs.
For the coding side, look no further than the Rust revolution going on in gaming right now.
Even in medicine, efforts like the Mammal Foundational AI model is set to revolutionise drug discovery.
So I say all of this because if there's anything I've learned over my ten years of covering AI on this channel, is that it's becoming increasingly bifurcated.
So now, I hope you can understand a little bit of where I'm coming from, which brings me back to the topic of this episode, because on Tuesday, the eighth of September, OpenAI announced that it had solved one of the hardest problems in mathematics—the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem.
puzzle with a one million dollar bounty.
The best minds on earth had been trying for ninety years, and yet it remained unsolved.
Whether due to poor communication or actual theft, OpenAI has been accused of stealing one of the greatest mathematical discoveries in history from another mathematician's chat logs.
It goes further.
The mathematician claims that an OpenAI employee threatened him to keep his mouth shut.
So, on the one hand, we have a potentially massive breakthrough with over three hundred unsolved math problems.
But on the other hand, there's some serious accusations that OpenAI stole the answers from a mathematician's chat logs.
It's a complicated story, but it's worth talking about.
This is a story about trust, man versus the machine, and the existential questions that come along with that.
Let's get into it.
You are watching Cold Fusion TV.
But the world's best mathematicians have been stuck on it for almost a century.
That is the Navier-Stokes problem, one of mathematics' biggest unsolved mysteries.
And now AI has walked into the classroom, and the company says they have cracked it.
Quite a breakthrough, which has also invited trouble, because OpenAI is now being accused of stealing work from rivals.
As mathematicians question AI's dominance in the field.
When one of the hardest mathematical problems is solved, you'd expect the world to be elated, pouring out their congratulations.
But instead, the general sentiment seemed to be anger, and it's not just because an AI solved it.
They were accusing OpenAI of theft.
As funny as it sounds, a case of a fluid dynamics proof turned into an all-out public brawl about theft and intimidation.
But if we go back one week from the day it was solved, it leads us to a mathematician at New York University.
He became the center of an uncomfortable discussion: what really happens to the chat logs of AI users?
But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
We need a bit of context here to understand what was solved, so we can grasp the full.
impact of the story.
This will only take a second.
In two thousand, the Clay Mathematics Institute picked the seven problems it regarded as the grandest unsolved problems in mathematics.
They put a one million dollar bounty on each.
In twenty-six years, exactly only one had fallen.
Grigori Perelman proved the Poincaré conjecture and famously refused both the money and the Fields Medal.
This is him here in this picture, and you can say that honestly, he won the prize as a challenge, and he didn't care about the money.
Another one of the seven Millennium Prize problems was the Navier-Stokes problem.
These equations were first written down in the nineteenth century.
They describe how fluids like water and air move.
Engineers use them daily to design wings and forecast the weather.
I even came across it during my undergrad.
But the embarrassing part for humanity is no one could actually prove that these equations always held true.
The Millennium problem asks a deceptively simple question: If you start with a smooth, well-behaved fluid, do the equations always keep well-behaved—that is, smooth—at all times, or do the equations allow for impossible things, predicting that under certain conditions, the fluid reaches infinite speed and infinite energy in a finite time.
So why am I saying all of this?
Well, this next part is key to the story.
There are two ways of solving the problem: either you have to prove that the equations stay well-behaved at all times, or prove the opposite.
Given a smooth external force, the equations go nuts.
This whole story runs through the latter method of proving it.
The route came from two Spanish mathematicians, Diego Cordoba and Luis Martinez Dorora.
Just a couple of years ago, they developed a new strategy: a very specific sequence of carefully timed kicks that push a fluid towards going nuts to infinite speed.
Almost nobody else was working in that direction, so it was sort of a rare secret in the mathematics world.
Enter the protagonist of our story, the NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster.
He and his collaborator picked up the unusual idea from the Spaniards and pushed it further.
Tristan would later speak to Brady from one of my old-time favorite channels, Numberphile.
He talks about his experience during the OpenAI controversy.
Some of the responses have been trimmed down for time, but I'll leave a link to the full interview below.
Tristan's collaborator was Levant Alpaget, a mathematician who happens to work at Anthropic, and that there's a little clue if you know what I mean.
It was, in Buckmaster's words, "quote a purely personal collaboration, free of any institutional agreements." End quote.
Buckmaster would set up a problem, Alpaget would feed it into the model, and they would refine what came out and repeat the process.
Buckmaster continues, "quote We used several LLMs throughout: Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's Codex, especially with GPT 5.6L, and more recently, Astra." End quote.
Crucially, the sessions of their OpenAI chat logs for the project were stored.
Did you make a mistake by putting all that stuff onto Codex?
Do you regret using their product?
We, yeah, we made many mistakes.
there never been a leak, then there wouldn't have had this red alert.
I had seen a lot of crazy stuff.
I didn't think that they would go this far.
For most of the past year, the progress was slow.
Then, on August fifteenth, it wasn't.
The pair was making progress with their AI experiments.
Buckmaster states, "Quote: The first LLM-generated proof Levent sent me was the most horrendous I have ever read." End quote.
But by the twenty-second of August, it had formally been verified to be true.
So to be clear, they had not fully solved the Millennium Problem, but they had built the road towards solving it.
Then came Thursday, the third of September.
Buckmaster states, "Quote: With the rumors circulating that Anthropic had resolved a major open problem, I wrote to a prominent mathematician at OpenAI." End quote.
The message was essentially, "Hey, it's not Anthropic solving this problem.
It's just us two mathematicians." You don't think that rumor had any kind of genesis in the success you'd been having secretly, almost, with the Euler equations.
That's exactly what it came from.
Yes, the original rumor was simply that the company anthropic.
Then it was they realized it was Levent, and then people from OpenAI started asking Levent, like old friends, started saying, "Are you in New York?
" I contacted them by email.
Eventually, I said, "Let's meet the following week." Then we got this message from the mathematician that OpenAI were about to do something really stupid.
That was what they said.
Right by Sunday, the sixth of September, Buckmaster was on calls with Sebastian Bubeck, the OpenAI mathematician.
It turns out the company just happened to be working on the same problem.
What the mathematician at OpenAI told him was that an internal OpenAI model had produced a roughly 100-page proof of the finite-time blowup of the Navier-Stokes equations.
When Alpaguay asked exactly what method they used, the answer came back as the exact and usual route that Buckmaster had.
been secretly working on for a year.
The method was so specific that OpenAI going down exactly the same route was a quote bright red flag end quote.
I wanted to know if they'd taken our methods because if they had solved the fourth one, that was kind of a red flag to me that they'd solved the fourth one, and that's the one that they had solved.
OpenAI's own announcement lines up with Buckmaster's timeline.
Rumors of an Anthropic breakthrough reached the company seemingly in late August, and in Sam Altman's words quote We were curious if ours could do it too end quote.
The effort began on the first of September.
It used a multi-agent system powered by an internal model quote significantly more capable than GPT Six Astra end quote.
「GPT Six Astra
It ran ten thousand agents for roughly eighty eight hours, exchanging two point seven million messages and burning about one hundred and thirty billion output tokens.
GPT Six Astra itself then spent seventeen hours formalizing the result.
The proof, if true.
Shows that a smooth fluid at rest under a smooth force with finite energy can develop a singularity, reaching infinite speed in finite time.
The fluid spirals into a vortex and stretches like spaghetti until the math breaks.
You can think of it as being similar to what happens to physics equations near the center of a black hole.
So there's an answer to the Millennium Question.
Yes, Navier-Stokes can blow up.
So mathematics had received a real contribution.
But the question is, who actually deserves the credit?
This is where things get heated.
The NYU mathematician Buckmaster wrote his case in a lengthy PDF statement describing what happened.
His case rests on two things.
One, the timing.
OpenAI suddenly, furiously started working on the problem only after word of his progress reached the company.
Yes, they thought it was anthropic, not two humans, but it set off the starting gun.
Even more suspiciously, the company finished in under a week using his niche approach.
And also, they wouldn't tell me when they started working on it.
You know, I kept asking, when did you start working on it?
And they just said, oh, we have these amazing models.
We have these amazing models.
Alpagay had also been told by the OpenAI mathematician Sebastian Bubak that quote very little human input had been used end quote.
Buckmaster denies this quote.
This turned out not to be true end quote.
He claims that an entire OpenAI team had worked on it, tackling the easiest problems first.
The second thing his case depends on is the data.
Buckmaster writes quote.
I asked whether the model had been trained on or had access to our sessions and codex, into which we had been putting all our drafts for the whole project end quote.
He was told that the model does not look up user data.
He continues quote.
I asked again about training.
I did not get an answer end quote.
All the main architectural ingredients in that in that unforced boiler.
Were in our work for which they would have had on their service, and and it hadn't and it hadn't been published.
It hadn't been published.
No, no, no, it hadn't been published.
Then things started to get weird.
Tristan Buckmaster claims that OpenAI said that the pair of them could publish his results first and claim the one million dollar prize, but only under one condition: his colleague Alpaygay had to be wiped off the credits for discovering the prize because he quote works at Anthropic end quote.
Buckmaster refused and said that he would go public with the story.
Then came the threats.
OpenAI asked quote Why would you ruin your career?
Buckmaster replied that he was an academic and couldn't see why going public would ruin his career.
The next reply seemed to be a veiled threat quote If you don't want me to be nice, then I don't have to be nice end quote.
So, like, it took us a while to kind of figure out what had happened.
The initial suspicion is that they started lying.
Like, the first thing that they came in the call, they wanted to show us the prompt.
At this point, I said, I knew that we're about to lie because they lied before about the prompt they used to solve other math problems.
They showed me on the screen, and they just literally copy pasted the Millennium Prize problem.
They said that they took the prize and they pressed enter, and they got the solution.
And at that point, I just had to laugh because it's just so ridiculous.
It came out within a few minutes that this was a lie, and that they had worked on other problems beforehand, and they'd given other prompts, and they like this lie evaporated within minutes.
Buckmaster remains careful with his words.
He writes near the end of his document, "quote I am not accusing anyone of anything." Although, when the New York Times asked if OpenAI's LLM agents found the solution based on his ChatGPT logs, he stated that the events that played out were.
highly suggestive that that's exactly what happened.
He went on to say that OpenAI's offers felt like an attempt to buy him off.
They couldn't understand why I wouldn't take this bargain.
OpenAI has claimed that his story is false and inflammatory on X.
Bubeck, the OpenAI mathematician, denies asking for Alpagae to be removed from the credits.
He published a long-flowing text he sent Alpagae, telling him that they would receive all the credit for the discovery and that they were willing to show the prompts used.
He describes this as offers to help and not pressure.
On having Alpagae as a collaborator, Bubeck told the New York Times that the optics would look strange for the company.
