Growing up with a last name like you have, do you feel a certain kind of pressure?
I imagine that's a pretty intense pressure to live up to a last name like Gates.
For me, yes, I feel that pressure a hundred percent.
But like, what a privilege to feel that, right?
I think I'd be so bored if I didn't feel like, oh, I need to do something or I need to have like a purpose.
And I've been so lucky that I've been given by my parents, like, I can focus on what I care about and what I actually want to do.
That was Phoebe Gates, daughter of Bill Gates, talking about the pressure of growing up with that surname.
To not be judged as a typical nepo baby who does nothing and is still set for life, Phoebe set out to build something that was actually hers.
She built it all right, but things aren't going according to plan.
Phoebe Gates's claim to fame was Fear, a platform she built with her Stanford roommate, Sophia Kiani.
It was pitched as a free AI-powered shopping tool, one that would compare prices for you and promised that you'd never overpay.
So that was the idea behind it.
Launched in April of 2025, it would go on to raise a total of 43.5 million, cross half a million downloads, and get named by Time Magazine as the best invention of 2025.
By early 2026, that valuation had climbed to 185 million dollars.
For Phoebe Gates, this was the proof that she could build something on her own.
As she put it herself, "quote No ties to my privilege or my last name." Then, in July 2026, Bloomberg tested Fear's browser extensions across more than 50 websites.
It found that it was doing something very fishy and potentially very illegal.
What we found was that if you had the Fear extension installed on your mobile browser, it would fire an automatic click in the background the moment you put something in your shopping cart on any of the sites it had partnered with, even if you didn't.
interact with Fear's app or extension, it was claiming credit and earning money for sales that it never made.
What followed for Phoebe Gates was a story with more damaging revelations and potentially serious legal consequences.
This isn't just a small whoopsy either.
A maximum sentence of 20 years if found guilty.
A company called Honey is being sued in a federal court for doing similar things, but that comes later in the episode.
So today, we're going to look at the reports detailing what exactly happened inside of Fear, how the scheme worked, and what Miss Gates is being accused of.

23-year-old Phoebe Gates is the youngest of Bill and Melinda Gates' three children.
To have the last name Gates must be kind of weird when you think about it.
Everyone knows your dad's name, of course, because he was once the richest man in the world.
He was, however, disliked in the 80s and early 90s for shrewd business practices, and in the 2020s, he'd be hated for something more serious.
But let's not get sidetracked.
By the 2000s, your dad was a neutral figure, seen as the market leader of the late 20th century computer boom.
The father that you grew up with is from this era.
At home, as far as you can tell, things were normal.
You did chores.
Smartphones were banned at the dinner table or before age 14.
Although you did stand to inherit 10 million dollars and weren't allowed to tell your friends that you fly in a private jet.
But overall, so far, so good.
as you got older, you were beginning to get pretty frustrated by people judging you as a lazy nepo baby before you even opened your mouth.
What better way to mitigate that than to build something on your own?
So that's exactly what Phoebe Gates did.
She went to Stanford to do so, and from the very first week, she felt the weight of her surname.
I had so much insecurity and like such a desire to prove myself.
Right, Stanford year, like I came in, I was like I have so much privilege.
I'm a nepo baby.
Like I had so much insecurity around that.
Her parents told her that she wasn't allowed to drop out and start a company.
Phoebe found that ironic, given that her dad famously did exactly that at Harvard.
She would stick it through though, and would graduate in 2024.
She got a degree that was extremely relevant for building an AI-based web shopping tool, human biology.
Anyway, while she was at Stanford, let's just say there were signs.
Phoebe enrolled in an unofficial course called "So You Think You Can Rule the World." It wasn't listed in the course catalog.
フィービーは「So You Think You Can Rule the World（世界を支配できると思っているあなたへ）」という非公式の講座に登録した。
You could only get it through a referral.
I'm sure that her last name had nothing to do with obtaining that.
Former students say that the class taught them to identify loopholes and power structures, and how to get what they want inside a system.
Phoebe later used this network to recruit some of Phoea's early employees.
Choosing people from this specific class obviously would have no consequences later.
But as a side, the fact that this class exists inside one of the most prestigious universities in the world gives credence to what most of us feel.
It's almost like controlling people and manipulating systems is such a common pathway to elite status that a course on the subject exists.
So anyway, in the dorm, Phoebe and her randomly assigned roommate Sophia Kiani kept running into the same problem.
They'd find a dress that they liked online, and then spend a lot of time trying to figure out if it existed cheaper somewhere else or secondhand.
Then they thought, why wasn't there just a tool that did all of that for you?
For the two of us, we actually met as randomly paired roommates at Stanford.
We were the girls spending hours wasting time shopping across different sites, figuring out the best secondhand deal, understanding if this was actually a good item to add to our collection or to our wardrobe.
And as we saw every single space be absolutely overtaken by vertical agents, whether that was customer service or coding, there felt like there was this giant white space for like.
What should we actually buy, and why doesn't everyone have a personal shopper in their pocket?
Because we are wasting so much money on junk.
So that was the problem they were trying to solve.
Next, we'll see how the Stanford Duo built their app.
Then we'll see how they got themselves into trouble.
But first, this video is sponsored by Raycon.
It's October, which means it's officially Raycon month.
And having used Raycon for quite a while now, one of the products I've been using recently is their Everyday Clip earbuds.
Whether it's going for walks, running errands, or even working from home, these have been great.
What makes them different is their open ear design.
They clip onto your ears rather than sitting inside them, so you can listen to music, podcasts, or calls while still hearing what's going on around you.
Whether I'm walking through the neighborhood or moving around after working on a script for the whole day, I don't feel completely disconnected from everything around me.
They're also incredibly lightweight.
The memory metal clip gently secures them to your ears without much pressure, so they can stay in place without becoming uncomfortable.
It's also got multi-point connection, so I can switch between my phone and laptop without having to reconnect anything.
And the battery life is excellent too.
You get up to eight hours of playtime and thirty hours of battery life with the charging case.
I charge them maybe once a week.
The sound is clear and balanced, and calls come through cleanly.
And because my ears aren't blocked, I can still stay aware of what's going on around me.
Raycon now has over three million customers, and the sound quality is right up there with far more expensive brands.
Plus, they come with a thirty-day guarantee, so there's very little risk in trying them out.

Now back to the episode.
So where were we?
Oh yeah, Phoebe and Sophia had just had the idea in their dorm room to build something that can find them dresses easier and for cheaper.
Turning it into a real product, however.
took longer than expected.
The two of them spent months building a desktop-only version, which Phoebe later admitted was a complete waste of time.
When we first developed it, we frankly developed it only for desktop, and we spent months and months building this and just perfecting it, making the pixels perfect, making it look pretty.
Which now, looking back, it was a complete waste of time.
Complete waste of time.
They eventually pivoted, and in April of 2025, they launched Fear as a mobile app and browser extension.
The name, by the way, is just Phoebe and Sophia pushed together.
So, how does it work exactly?
Say you're looking at a $200 dress on some retailer's website.
Fear would scan 40,000 stores in real time, then tell you if the same dress is sitting on a resale platform for half the price, or it would find a discount code and auto apply it at checkout.
When a purchase went through using Fear's referral, Fear earned a small commission from the retailer.
Essentially, it was affiliate marketing.
Now, browser extensions that find coupon codes aren't new.
What Fia pitched, though, was something more focused on fashion and sustainability.
The company said it had built one of the largest secondhand databases in the U.S. over 350 million items pulled from 150 resale platforms.
Beyond the price, the app could show you an item's retained value.
Here's co-founder Sophia Kiani explaining it.
Number one, we now have over 150 secondhand platforms that we've integrated into Fia.
We have over 350 million items in our in-house search database, one of the largest secondhand databases in the U.S.
And we also now show people the retained value of an item that they're considering purchasing.
So if you're looking at like a $500 handbag on Fia, you can quickly understand can you resell that item for 300 or 400 dollars?
Or on the contrary, if it's a fast fashion piece and you're buying it for 100 bucks, is it only reselling for $10?
Does it immediately depreciate and lose 90 percent of its value?
And we really do want to incentivize people.
People to choose more mindfully, to buy things that they actually want, things that they would enjoy, and things that are actually like higher quality pieces.
To be honest, in itself, it's a pretty good idea.
At least the investors thought it was a compelling pitch.
Fia pulled in eight million in a seed round in September 2025, led by Kleiner Perkins.
Then 35 million in January 2026.
That was backed by Coval Ventures.
That pushed the valuation to 185 million.
Alongside the VCs came some celebrity investors, so things were going just great.
Then they stopped going so great.
Bloomberg started to ask questions.
They decided to look under the hood.
Before we get into what Bloomberg found, there's a term that's central to the whole story.
That term is called cookie stuffing.
Bear with me on this one because it's key to everything that follows.
When you buy something online, the retailer wants to know who sent you there.
If a coupon site or a YouTuber helped you find that product, that referrer earns a small commission.
Retailers track this activity through a cookie, a tiny piece of data that gets placed in your browser when you click a referral link.
You click, the cookie drops, and the referrer gets paid.
Simple enough.
But cookie stuffing is when another company swoops in and places that cookie in your browser without you ever clicking their link.
You might have found the retailer on your own or been sent there by a YouTuber, but when cookie stuffing happens, that external company who swooped in takes the credit and collects the commission.
Moreover, the retailer pays for a referral that never happened.
The worst part is, whoever actually earned that referral sale gets a big, fat nothing.
And that's what Bloomberg set out to test.
They ran checks on Fears extension across more than 50 retail websites.
Alongside them was Ben Elderman, a former Harvard Business School professor and one of the most respected researchers in affiliate marketing fraud.
A competing tool called Capital One Shopping ran its own analysis too.
Capital One Shopping
They all found the same thing: Fears was dropping its own cookie into transactions it had nothing to do with and taking the credit.
There were three separate features doing this.
The first feature opened a hidden background tab during checkout and injected Fears referral code over whoever actually sent the shopper there.
The second feature triggered a cookie whenever a user clicked anywhere on the page after Fears pop-up appeared, even if they were trying to close it.
And the third feature was called a passive trigger.
It refreshed Fears cookie every two hours on any site where the extension was active, even if another affiliate had earned their referral in between.
Fears code would overwrite it.
Fears
Seeing all of this, Bloomberg obviously had questions, and they reached out on July seventh.
That very same day, Fia switched off these features.
The company responded, saying that only become aware of the problem quote within the last twenty four hours.
They said that worked hard overnight to fix what they called a coding error.
That explanation didn't land, though.
Impact dot com is the affiliate network that distributes commissions to companies like Fia.
Upon the news, they smeltered at.
They suspended the startup from their marketplace.
For Fia, the official story was that it was just a bug.
They caught that bug and fixed it in a day.
Case closed.
Except Bloomberg kept digging.
What they found a month later was a lot more damaging.
On August the 11th, Bloomberg published their follow-up investigation.
Now this looked pretty bad.
It was something that FIA couldn't explain away.
Bloomberg obtained a screenshot of an internal dashboard.
They didn't publish the image, but they described what it showed.
What FIA had called a "quid bug" was actually a named feature called Enable Coupon Autodrop.
It had a toggle that could be switched on and off remotely.
It was switched on December 10th, 2025, and stayed on for 209 days, only switching off on July 7th, 2026, the very same day that Bloomberg had first contacted the company.
So to be clear, according to Bloomberg, it ran through the entire holiday shopping season, through a 35 million dollar fundraising round in 2026, and through the months of revenue growth that they were reporting to investors.
Now here's the part where it gets pretty smoky, in the if there's smoke, there's fire kind of way.
The internal Slack messages.
People inside the company who chose to remain anonymous shared these conversations with Bloomberg on December 18th.
Phoebe Gates wrote to her technical team.
She was concerned that Phia wasn't capturing enough commissions from Etsy.
Her message was, quote, Can you confirm auto pop for cookie drop is live on all sites with a coupon to confirm we are monetizing on all GMV?
End quote.
She follows up, quote, But regardless, we should capture every transaction if the cookie drop was working.
End quote.
But it wasn't just Phia though.
In a separate exchange, Sophia Kiani was reportedly pushing for yet another cookie feature.
When an engineer warned that it would violate Google Chrome's extension policy, Kiani suggested that they could reframe it and deal with the complications later.
The engineer pointed out that the passive trigger was already refreshing cookies every two hours anyway.

Cookie stuffing accounted for a significant portion of Fear's revenue.
Now, Fear said that some of this drop was related to disabling different monetization features to ensure that they were compliant.
It appears that most of their revenue was coming from cookie stuffing.
A Fear data scientist estimated that cookie stuffing accounted for roughly fifty one percent of merchandise value the company claimed credit for in June.
Fear said the figure wasn't right, but in any case, the revenue collapse speaks for itself.
Fear issued a statement stating that the features had been removed, the transactions would be reversed, and they were hiring for a new position they didn't have before, head of compliance.

So the big question is, where does this leave Phoebe Gates and Sophia Kiani?

No charges have officially been filed against them, so we're going to have to wait for an official investigation.
If convicted, though, corporate attorney Ariel Givner wrote on X that cookie stuffing typically constitutes federal wire fraud in U.S. courts with a maximum penalty of up to twenty years in prison.
But of course, most experts doubt that scenario would happen.
Reason being, prosecutors would have to prove deliberate intent to defraud rather than a simple corporate oversight.
Though if true, those Slack communications don't look too good.
Cookie stuffing is not new and has a legal track record.

That's was bought by PayPal for four billion dollars, and it's facing class action lawsuits.

And finally, we get to the company Honey.
This story was doing the rounds recently.
PayPal bought them for four billion, and now it's the subject of an ongoing federal class action lawsuit for substantially the same conduct as Fia, the same hidden tab technique, cookie overrides, and other shady tactics.
The similarities make you raise an eyebrow.

As for Phoebe Gates, she was last spotted getting out of a helicopter in New York City in August, wearing her Fia merch jumper.

The Slack messages showed that both founders knew exactly what was powering a significant chunk of growth and chose to keep it running.
Whether this ends in a lawsuit, a settlement, or something worse remains to be seen.
What's already happened, though, is that the narrative Phoebe spent a year carefully trying to build has taken a serious hit, and it's very much possible that she's bitten off more than she can chew.
After the stain her father put on the Gates name, this might be another one to add to the list.
