The village lay beneath a wide, grey sky, surrounded by fields, low hills, and dark winter trees.

For many years, one man had worked harder than almost anyone else in that village.

At first, everyone watched in silence.

Ivan stamped his feet, turned, and pulled Katerina with him.

Someone else would walk here.

Someone else would plant seed.

Someone else would harvest.

Life would continue without him.

Ivan pressed his forehead against the stone.
イワンは額を石に押し当てた。
For the first time, he allowed himself to cry alone.

His shoulders shook.

After some time.

Ivan straightened as much as he could.

He wiped his face.

Then he walked down the hill.

By morning, people were gathering outside the house.

A wagon stood ready to take the family away.

Their bags were loaded.

There was the well.

There was the road to the fields.

There was the tree beneath which he had rested many times.

Every few meters, another memory appeared.

Then, one by one, the neighbors stopped walking.
やがて隣人たちは一人、また一人と歩みを止めた。
They called their final goodbyes.

The wagon continued.

The village began to grow smaller.
村は次第に小さくなっていった。
Ivan turned his whole body so he could keep watching.

Katharina sat beside him, silently crying.
カタリーナは彼の隣に座り、静かに泣いていた。
Their children looked forward toward the road.
子供たちは前方の道を見つめていた。
Ivan looked back.
イヴァンは後ろを見つめた。
The difference between them was simple.
彼らの違いは単純だった。
The young were traveling toward a future.
若者たちは未来へ向かって旅していた。
Ivan felt he was traveling away from his life.
イヴァンは自分の人生から遠ざかるように旅していると感じた。
Finally, most of the village disappeared behind a hill.
ついに、村のほとんどが丘の向こうに消えた。
Ivan leaned sideways, trying to see one last thing: the stone cross.

For a few seconds, he found it.

There it stood, alone against the morning sky.

His name, Katharina's name, their place in the land.

Ivan watched until the road turned.

Then the cross disappeared.

Ivan lowered his head.

Ahead, there were trains, ports, ships, the ocean, and Canada.

Nobody knew what waited for them there.

It stood in wind, rain, snow, and sun.

Villagers would pass it, year after year.

Some would remember Ivan clearly.

Others would know only the story, but the cross would continue saying, without words, that someone had lived there.
物語だけを知る人もいるだろう、しかし十字架は言葉なく語り続けるだろう、そこに誰かが生きていたことを。
Someone had loved that difficult land.
誰かがその厳しい土地を愛していた。
Someone had given his strength, his body, and his years to it.
誰かがその土地に、自分の力と体と年月を捧げていた。
And when poverty forced him to leave, he could not carry the land with him.
そして貧しさが彼に立ち去ることを強いたとき、彼は土地を持っていくことはできなかった。
So he left his name behind, carved into stone.
だから彼は、石に刻まれた自分の名前を残していった。
