Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva,
ルイス・イナシオ・ルラ・ダ・シルヴァ氏、
better known as Lula, the left wing candidate, has been elected as Brazilian president for the fourth time after a second round of voting.
ルラとしてよく知られる左派候補が、決選投票の末、4度目のブラジル大統領に選出されました。
His victory came as a surprise to many after he lost the first round of the election held on the fourth of October.
10月4日に行われた選挙の第1回投票で敗れた後だったため、彼の勝利は多くの人にとって驚きでした。
Then he was beaten by right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
その後、彼は右派候補のフラヴィオ・ボルソナロ氏に敗れました。彼はジャイール・ボルソナロ元大統領の息子です。
However, neither candidate got a majority of votes, so a second round of voting was held this Sunday.
しかし、どちらの候補も過半数の票を得られなかったため、今週日曜日に決選投票が行われました。
The voting pattern in the first round led many people to assume that Bolsonaro would win the second round.
第1回投票の投票パターンから、多くの人々はボルソナロ氏が決選投票で勝つと思い込んでいました。
However, Lula got almost four and a half million more votes than Bolsonaro in Sunday's election.
しかし、日曜日の選挙でルラ氏はボルソナロ氏より約450万票も多く獲得しました。
This is the first time in Brazilian history that a losing candidate from the first round of voting wins the second round.
これはブラジルの歴史上初めて、第1回投票の敗者が第2回投票で勝利した例です。
Since the election, Bolsonaro has fled to the United States.
選挙以来、ボルソナロ氏はアメリカ合衆国に逃亡しました。
The Brazilian Supreme Court had started a process to investigate him for money laundering, a type of financial crime.

He denies the allegations.

We're going to learn the noun turnaround.
「turnaround」という名詞を学びます。
Turnaround is used as a noun in this headline, but it might help to look at the phrasal verb turnaround first.
この見出しでは Turnaround は名詞として使われていますが、まず句動詞の turn around を見ると理解しやすいでしょう。
Literally, if you turn around, you face the opposite way.
文字通り、turn around すれば、反対方向を向くことになります。
Metaphorically, turnaround can mean changing something that is unsuccessful to make it successful.
比喩的には、turnaround はうまくいっていないものを成功するように変えることを意味します。
For example, the best CEOs can turn failing businesses around and make them profitable.
例えば、優秀なCEOは経営不振の企業を立て直し、利益を出せるようにすることができます。
The name for this process is a turnaround.
このプロセスの名前が turnaround です。
Now the noun turnaround is one word with no space.

In this Lula took a campaign that was losing and turned it around.
この場合、ルラ氏は負けていた選挙戦を立て直しました。
The turnaround meant that he won the election.
その turnaround が意味したのは、彼が選挙に勝ったということです。
Turnaround is often used to talk about business, sport, and politics because it's often about a change in the outcome of a competition.

progressive という単語を学びます。
Now, literally, the adjective progressive can describe something that is improving something else, causing progress.

Progressive is also often used, as in this headline, as a political label, which is a noun.
Progressive は、この見出しのように、政治的なレッテルとして、名詞としてもよく使われます。
You can describe someone as a progressive.
誰かを progressive だと表現することができます。
In very general terms, progressive policies or ideas attempt to change society,

in contrast to conservative policies and ideas which try to maintain things as they are or return them to how they were.
物事を現状のまま維持しようとしたり、以前の状態に戻そうとする保守的な政策や考えとは対照的です。
In reality, it's often a bit more complex, but progressive often describes left-wing or liberal ideas and politicians.
実際には、もう少し複雑なことが多いですが、progressive はしばしば左派やリベラルな考えや政治家を表します。
In this story, people on the left wing of U.S. politics who see themselves as progressives are celebrating Lula's victory, who they would also probably see as a progressive.

You're more likely to see it written down.
書き言葉で目にする可能性の方が高いでしょう。
Dismayed is also often used in news headlines.
Dismayedはニュースの見出しでもよく使われます。
And we also have the set expression to my dismay or to my great dismay, which we can use to introduce something bad that happened.
