That's a bit of a strange use of the verb 'take', isn't it?

Yes, you're right, it isn't a common use of the word 'take'.

When people take to the streets, it means a large group of them have gathered in a public place to oppose something, in other words, a protest.

So here, we know that young people are protesting in public areas for various reasons around the world.

They've taken to the streets.

Yes.

Now, it's not always used in the context of protests.

People can take to the streets in celebration, for example, to celebrate a sports victory.

This year, thousands of people in Spain took to the streets to celebrate their FIFA World Cup win, didn't they?

Take to the streets is mostly used in these two contexts - protests and celebrations.

We've had to 'take to the streets' - gather in a public place to oppose or celebrate something.

OK, so we've talked about protests that have been going on in France, Italy, Albania, Spain and India.

But this is part of a wider pattern of protests led by young people, isn't it?

It uses the phrase 'cost of living'.

Now, I see this phrase everywhere, Becca, what can you tell us?

Well, the cost of living means the amount of money people need to pay for everyday essentials such as food, housing and energy bills.

Basically, cost of living is how much it costs to live.
基本的に、生活費とは生活するのにどれくらいかかるかということです。
So when the headline asks how the cost of living has changed in those countries, it's asking if the amount of money needed for essentials has changed.

If the cost of living has risen, everyday essentials have got more expensive.

OK, so that's a noun phrase, the cost of living.

But it's also commonly used as an adjectival phrase, where the words are hyphenated.

For example, a common phrase is 'the cost-of-living crisis'.

Yes.

If their future is stacked against them, it means the circumstances they face will make it difficult for them to succeed.

As we've heard some of the things worrying young people around the world are the quality of education, job opportunities, and voting rights.

The more common version of this phrase is 'the odds are stacked against you'.

It comes from a game context in which the situation makes it much harder for one person to win in a way that can be unfair.

The phrase can be used in many situations.

For example, the football team had a few injured players in a match against the league champions.
