The state with the highest density of people, shopping malls, diners, horses, and it even has the longest boardwalk in the world.
As a Pennsylvanian, I've had the opportunity of spending a lot of time in the state of New Jersey,
and today we're going to talk about this wonderful place as we learn English.
I'm Benji, and on this channel we learn English through interesting topics.
Here's some brief history.
So New Jersey has a very long history, well, for American standards anyway.
First, Native Americans, which were called Lenape, lived there.
Then people from other countries, such as the Dutch, who were the first Europeans to live there, but then Of course, the English took over.
New Jersey was extremely important in the American Revolution.
There were many big battles that happened there.
After the war, it became one of the first states in the United States.
Over time, New Jersey grew and became a wonderful place for families to live, developing amazing cities such as Newark, Jersey City, and Elizabeth.
Today, it's known for having great schools, lots of places to shop, things to do, and crazy drivers.
Also, it's been a big escape for New Yorkers who want to leave the city and move someplace that's a bit more serene,
calm, and affordable.
This is where many many people from New York City are moving.
Why?
Well, you can see New Jersey from New York City just by looking over the Hudson River.
While in New York City, you're much more likely to be robbed, stabbed, shot, beat up, or yelled at by random people.
In New Jersey, life's a lot calmer.
Plus, you get to pay less taxes.
For example, Xiaomi, the famous polyglot who goes around speaking Chinese in New York City,
he actually grew up in New York City and has recently left,
saying that it no longer feels safe for him to have his wife and his child in the city.
So what they do?
They move to New Jersey.
Here are my three favorite parts of New Jersey.
Number one, Atlantic City.
Atlantic City is an extremely famous place on the coast of New Jersey that became known in the 1800s.
In the early 1800s,
people would go and bathe in the ocean at Atlantic City, simply because they thought that the ocean was going to heal them in some sort of way.
Later in the 1900s, people began building hotels and casinos.
This made it an extremely popular place for adults to escape to and have a good weekend.
For quite a while, it was almost as if we had Las Vegas on the East Coast.
But then other cities started building casinos and hotels and resorts too, so Atlantic City wasn't so special anymore.
It's still a popular place today, but not as popular as it was 50 years ago.
Number two, Ocean City, New Jersey.
This is my absolute favorite.
It's a very calm beach town.
It's like instead of being a Las Vegas copy pasted onto the East Coast,
it's more of a tranquil, serene, peaceful beach town for everyone to enjoy.
I mean, they've definitely focused more on attracting families rather than single people looking to have a good time.
But there's still lots of fun things to do in Ocean City, New Jersey, such as go swimming, go fishing, go crabbing.
There's many golf courses and tons of places to shop.
I have many memories as a kid going to this town, and it was a wonderful place, and it still is.
And number three, Cape May.
Cape May is a charming town located at the southernmost tip of New Jersey.
It's known for its Victorian architecture, beautiful beaches, and a rich history.
Cape May became very popular in the 1800s
when many rich people were going there to build beautiful houses near the beach, and many of these houses are still standing.
So when you go there, it almost feels like you're in that 1800s town.
Cape May has a very charming downtown area where you'll find many shops, restaurants, and museums.
It's a great place to relax, enjoy the beach, and learn about the town's history.
Now let's talk about the weather in New Jersey.
Just like in Pennsylvania, the weather is very extreme.
The winters will bring snow and freezing temperatures,
whereas the summers will bring lots of humidity, rain, thunderstorms, and heat that makes me feel like I'm back in Panama.
However, the fall and spring are just in the middle there, not too hot and not too cold.
In the fall, you can see the streets get filled up with leaves as the trees change colors and drop their leaves all around the state.
It's a beautiful thing to see, and as kids, we used to make piles and play in them and jump in them because why not?
And in the spring, all of the colors become vibrant again as
flowers bloom and trees grow back their vibrant leaves, making just about any street an extremely beautiful place to drive on.
So, if you're thinking about going to New Jersey one day, let me tell you the top three things that New Jersey has to offer.
Number one, incredible job opportunities, being that New Jersey is very close to Philadelphia to the west and New York City to the north.
Lots of people are able to drive from their homes in New Jersey to these cities to work every day.
Why?
Because they pay good.
For example, the average salary in Philadelphia is seventy-eight thousand dollars, according to PayScale.com, and it's even higher at eighty-four thousand in New York City,
which, versus the annual average salary in the United States, fifty-four thousand, is really good.
Number two, cultural diversity.
New Jersey is extremely diverse.
When I went there, I spent a month in Egg Harbor Township, and it seemed like there were more Latinos than Americans.
I mean, the announcements and the signs in Walmart were in Spanish,
and according to the 2020 census, 21 percent of all of the people in New Jersey are Latino American.
And number three, there's more shopping malls per square mile.
Than any state in the country.
So yeah, if you like shopping, New Jersey is the perfect state for you, as there are so many beautiful malls.
For example, the most notable ones might be Westfield Garden State Plaza, the Mall at Short Hills, Jersey Gardens Mall, and Bridgewater Commons.
