The United States is being hugged by two brothers.
Our story begins with their stepmother.
It's pretty easy to say where north and south begin and end because Earth literally turns around an axis that pokes through them.
But as for east and west, that answer has to be constructed by just picking a line, a so-called prime meridian.
For a long time, that line has been this one.
According to longitude heads, the further away something is from the prime meridian on this side, the more west it is, and the further away it is on this side, the more east it is.
Now this creates an anti meridian on the other side of the planet.
In terms of longitude, the anti meridian is the furthest east and west you can be on the planet.
So if you lick the boot of big longitude, the westernmost point in the United States is simply the part of it in the west that is closest to the anti meridian without crossing over to the east side.
That point is on Alaska's Amatignak Island, just 37 miles away from the edge of the west.
But that's kind of unsatisfying because if I go west from Amatignak Island, I run into more U.S. land.
So how can Amatignak be the westernmost if all this stuff is western more?
Well, the answer is that to get to all that stuff, you have to cross the anti meridian.
So all these islands are actually extremely east.
The first piece of U.S. land you encounter after crossing this line is Alaska's Semysopechnoy Island.
Longitude, it contains the easternmost point in the United States.
So under this system, Alaska is the northernmost, westernmost, and easternmost U.S. state.
But there's a different way to define east and west by direction of travel.
This method ignores coordinate grids entirely and focuses only on navigation, how we get to places.
It says, where in the U.S. is there just no more U.S. left that can be most directly traveled to by going more west?
Wherever that is, that is the westernmost point.
Using that definition, the westernmost point in the United States is the west coast of Guam.
Although longitude,ly it's very very eastern, the most direct route to it from everywhere else in the country is a trip west.
The same method tells us that the east coast of St.
Croix in the U.S.
Virgin Islands is the easternmost point in the U.S. because the most direct way to get there from anywhere else in the U.S. is to go east.
In 1968, this easternmost point was named Point Udall after Stewart Udall, who, as Secretary of the Interior under JFK and LBJ, here he is with First Lady Lady Bird, worked to protect a lot of U.S. natural spaces, including the U.S.
Virgin Islands Buck Island Reef.
But then in 1987, the westernmost point of Guam was officially also named Point Udall after Stewart's brother Mo Udall.
So by direction of travel, the United States begins at Point Udall and ends at Point Udall.
There's a lot to say about Americans, but it's undeniable that us Yanks are the warm filling of a Udall sandwich.
