And today we have a big topic, a topic that everybody thinks about.
Yes, today we talk about success and about 12 small habits that successful people share.
12 habits?
That's a lot of habits.
I don't have 12 of anything.
You have 12 excuses, maybe.
But why is this topic useful for your English?
Ah, good question.
Why are we talking about success in an English lesson?
Because these habits give us real sentences, useful sentences for work, for study.
for life, right?
We don't only learn new words; we use them in our own examples.
And everything today is for A2 and B1 learners.
Simple English, short sentences, real life.
No long grammar rules, promise.
Promise.

Okay, my notebook is ready.
Is yours ready?
Ready, Leo?
Ready.
Let's get started.
So, Leo, how are you today?
I'm tired, but I'm happy.
I tried something new this weekend.
Really?
What did you try?
I tried to wake up at six o'clock on Saturday, like successful people do.
And what happened?
Well, I woke up at six.
I looked at my phone, and I went back to sleep.
So you were successful for two minutes.
Two minutes?
2分？
That's my personal record.
And what time did you finally get up?
Nine thirty.
And then I felt strange all day, like I lost something.
That's very normal.
When you sleep too long, your body feels slow.
Yes, my body was slow, and my brain was slow.
And I drank three coffees.
Three coffees again, Leo.
That's a habit too, but not a good one.
I know.
Okay, what about you?
What did you do this weekend?
I went running on Saturday morning, five kilometers before breakfast.
Five kilometers before breakfast?
That's a different species.
It's not a different species.
It's just a habit.
I started with one kilometer.
One kilometer.
That sounds more human.
And on Sunday, I made a list of my goals for the month.
Twenty minutes with a cup of tea.
A list of goals every month?
Every month.
It helps me see my progress.
Interesting, because my goals live in my head and they disappear very fast.
That's exactly why we're talking about this today.
Speaking of habits and goals.
Yes.
Speaking of small habits that change your life.
Today we look at twelve habits, one by one, with real examples.
Okay, Leo.
Twelve habits.
Are you ready for all of them?
I'm ready, but let me be honest.
Twelve sounds like a lot.
It sounds like a lot, but these are small habits, not big life changes.
Small habits, like one minute.
Some of them take one minute.
Really?
Okay, that's my kind of success.
Let's start with number one.
Wake up at the same time every day.
Every day, even on Sunday?
Even on Sunday.
Your body likes a routine.
But on Sunday, I want to sleep until ten.
Then wake up at your normal time and take a nap at two o'clock.
A nap?
That's a compromise.
I accept.
Good.
Same time, seven days.
Your brain feels more awake in the morning.
And what time do you wake up?
Six fifteen.
And I don't use an alarm now.
No alarm?
How is that possible?
After three months, my body learned the time.
It's a habit.
Three months?
That's a long time.
It is, but the first week is the hardest.
Then it gets easier.
Okay.
Number two.
Number two.
Plan tomorrow before you go to bed.
Plan tomorrow in the evening.
My brain is dead in the evening.
Your brain is tired, so you don't do difficult work.
You only write a list.
A list of what?
Three things, not twenty.
Three things for tomorrow.
Only three?
That feels light.
It is light.
And here's a surprise.
Most successful people don't write long lists.
They don't?
They write short lists.
Three or four important things, and that's all.
So a long list is not a good sign.
A long list is a wish.
A short list is a plan.
Oh, that's a good sentence.
I'll write that down.
Wait, where's my pen?
This is habit number four, Leo.
We'll get there.
Okay.
so I plan three things at 9:30.
Then I sleep.
Perfect.
And you put the list next to your bed.
So in the morning, I don't need to think.
I just look and start.
Exactly.
And that brings us to number three: do the hard thing first.
The hard thing first in the morning?
No.
いや。
Yes.
In the morning, your energy is highest.
But in the morning, I'm sleepy.
I want the easy things.
The easy things feel good, but they take the whole day.
Hmm, that's true actually.
I answer emails for two hours, and then I'm tired.
And the hard task is still there, waiting all day.
So it sits on my shoulder like a small animal.
Like a small animal.
So do the hard thing at nine before the emails.
How long does the hard thing take?
25 minutes.
25分。
Then a short break.
Then another 25.
25 minutes.
25分。
That's a number I can remember.
And the rest of the day feels easy because the hard part is finished.
I like this one.
This one changes my morning.
Number four.
Write things down.
Ah, my pen problem.
You said it.
Why do you forget things?
Because my head is full.
Full of film scenes and coffee.
Write them down, and your head is free.
But I lose the paper.
Then use your phone.
One app, one list.
Always the same place.
One place, not five apps and two notebooks.
One place, and write the idea in five words, not full sentences.
Five words, like buy milk, call sister, think.
Perfect.
And here's a surprise.
Writing it down helps you remember, even if you never read it again.
Really?
So the writing is the work?
The writing is the work.
Research shows this again and again.
Then I'm going to write everything: my ideas, my shopping, my dreams.
Maybe start with the shopping.
Number five: ask questions.
Ask questions.
That's easy.
I ask questions all day.
You do, but where do successful people ask questions at work?
Hmm.
I don't know where.
Everywhere, and they ask simple, direct questions.
Like, what's the goal here, or who can help me?
Exactly.
And one more: what's the next step?
Oh, what's the next step is a very good question.
It moves things forward.
It moves everything forward.
When a conversation stops, ask it.
But sometimes I'm afraid to ask.
I don't want to look stupid.
Here's the truth: people think questions are smart, not stupid.
Really?
Because I feel stupid.
You feel stupid for thinking seconds, and then you understand.
That's a good trade.
Three seconds of stupid.
Okay, I can do that.
Number six.
Listen more than you speak.
Oh no, this is the hard one for me.
I know you love to talk.
I love to talk.
It's a family thing.
My whole family talks at the same time.
So here's a small rule.
Ask a question, then wait.
Don't fill the silence.
Don't fill the silence.
That's difficult.
Two seconds.
Only two seconds.
It feels long, but it isn't.
And what happens in those two seconds?
People tell you more, and they feel heard.
Feel heard.
That's a nice phrase.
It's very useful in English.
I hear you.
I understand.
So good listening is also good English practice.
Good listening is the best English practice.
You hear the rhythm and the chunks.
And you hear how people really speak, not textbook English.
Exactly.
Number seven: learn something small every day.
Every day, even on a busy day.
Ten minutes on a busy day, five.
And this is where our podcast helps.
This is exactly where our podcast helps.
Ten minutes in the morning with coffee.
I do that already.
I listen while I make breakfast.
Then you already have habit number seven.
Well done.
Really?
I'm successful already.
You're successful at one thing.
That's a start.
I'll take it.
Number eight.
Number eight: take care of your body.
Ah, sleep, water, and walking.
Yes, seven or eight hours of sleep, two liters of water, a short walk every day.
Two liters.
That's a lot of water.
It's four large glasses in the morning and afternoon, not in one minute.
And the walk?
How long?
Fifteen minutes.
15分。
After lunch is perfect.
Fifteen minutes.
15分。
I can walk to the shop and back.
Perfect.
And here's the connection: your English is better when you sleep well.
Really?
Why?
Because your brain needs sleep to remember new words.
It's real science.
So my bad sleep is bad for my English.
Your bad sleep is bad for everything.
Sorry, Leo.
No, it's fair.
It's very fair.
Number nine.
Learn to say no.
Say no, but I want people to like me.
You can say no and still be kind.
I can't this week, but thank you for asking.
Oh, that's polite.
And it's a clear no.
A clear no with a warm voice.
Because my no is usually maybe, and then I do it and I'm angry.
That's a very common problem, and you lose time.
I lose my evenings.
Last month, I helped three friends move house.
Three friends in one month?
Three friends, and my back still hurts.
So next time, I can't help this time, but I hope it goes well.
I can't help this time.
Okay, that's not rude.
It's honest, and honest people are more successful because people trust them.
Trust?
That's a big word.
Number ten: save a little money every month.
Money in an English lesson?
We're talking about all twelve habits.
Money is one of them.
Okay, but how much?
I'm not rich.
Ten percent of your salary, or five if ten is difficult.
Five percent.
That's small.
Small and regular.
Every month, the same day.
So it becomes automatic, like a habit.
Exactly like a habit.
And after one year, you have a small safety net.
A safety net.
What does that mean?
Money for a difficult time, for a broken phone or a lost job.
Ah, so it's not for a new television.
Not for a television.
For calm.
Calm is better than a television.
Much better.

What was difficult?
What will I change next week?
Hmm.
That's like a small meeting with myself.
It is exactly a small meeting with yourself, and it's very powerful.
Do you do this every week?
Every Sunday at six o'clock with tea.
It's my favorite habit.
And what did you write last week?
I wrote.
I said yes to too many things, so I practiced saying no.
And now habit nine.
It's all connected.
Everything is connected.
That's the secret, and number twelve is the last one.
Please tell me it's a fun one.
It's the best one.
Be kind and say thank you.
That's it.
That's the secret of success.
It's not the whole secret, but it's a big part.
People remember kind people.
Really?
More than clever people?
More than clever people.
Clever and cold is a lonely place.
Wow, that's a strong sentence.
And it's easy.
One message.
Thank you for your help yesterday.
One message a day?
One message a day.
It takes thirty seconds.
I can send one message.
Even I can do that.
And here's the surprise.
Do you remember the twelve habits?
Hmm.
Let me think.
Wake up at the same time.
Plan tomorrow.
Hard thing first.
Write things down.
Good.
Then ask questions.
Listen more.
Learn daily.
Take care of your body, say no, save money, review the week, and be kind.
All twelve, you remembered them.
I remembered them because I wrote them down.
Habit number four works.
It really does.
So which one is your favorite?
The hard thing first, because my mornings are a mess.
And which one is the hardest for you?
Listening more and saying no and sleeping.
That's three.
So start with one.
One.
Which one?
Maybe the thank you message.
The thank you message.
Thirty seconds.
I can start today.
Perfect.
And don't try twelve habits in one week.
That's the biggest mistake.
What happens if I try all twelve?
You do everything for three days and then you stop everything.
Ah, that's my story.
Every January.

That's slow.
Slow is fast.
Small habits, big results.
Okay, I'm starting with the thank you message and the hard thing first.
Two habits, not twelve.
Two habits.
I'm realistic now.
I'm proud of you.
And now the vocabulary.
You know, Leo, while we were talking, we used many useful words.
