When you hear the name Hugo Boss, what do you think of?
You may think of luxury, of suits or success, but there is a dark history behind this company.
Today we are talking about the man behind the brand and the dark history that the company has tried to forget for decades.
This isn't a story about fashion, it's a story about survival, power, and the darkest era of the 20th century.
In 1924, a man named Hugo Ferdinand Boss opened a small clothing factory in a town called Meting in Germany.
At first, he wasn't making luxury suits, rather, he was making shirts, jackets, and work uniforms.
But Germany was in a deep economic crisis at that time.
People had no money and therefore business was bad.
In 1931, Hugo Boss was almost bankrupt.
He was about to lose everything.
So Hugo made a choice that would change his legacy forever – he joined the Nazi party.
He believed in the ideology.
He was sick of seeing his country become more and more impoverished as his people lost their jobs and their homes to the banks.
So he got involved in the revolution that was on its way.
Here's a common myth.
A lot of people think that Hugo Boss designed all of the Nazi uniforms, but that is not true.
Hugo simply produced the uniforms in his factory, but they were actually designed by others.
His factory became the main manufacturer for the brown shirts, and eventually the infamous black uniform of the SS.
As the war began, the demand for uniforms was high, and so Hugo was profiting big.
He went from being a struggling tailor to a very wealthy businessman, but there was a terrible price.
Because of the war, there were not many Germans to work in the factories.
So what did Hugo do?
He used forced labor.
He used prisoners taken from their homes, from countries like France and Poland, and they were forced to work in his factories under terrible conditions.
And this is the part of the story that the brand has tried to keep quiet for a long time.
Unlike Hugo Boss, I didn't use slave labor to make LingoDiary –

After the war ended in 1945, the party was over.

and fined him massive amounts of money, and he would later die just a few years after the war, in 1948.
However, the company survived, his son-in-law took it over.
They stopped making uniforms for the military and started producing suits.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Hugo Boss became the symbol for the young professional man.

They successfully rebranded.
They took a company that was associated with war and associated it with wealth, success, and youth.
It wasn't until the late 1990s that Hugo Boss formally apologized for their history.
They contributed to a fund that would help the forced laborers.
So why am I telling you this story?
Because as language learners, we often watch materials about surface level things such as vlogs or fictional stories, et cetera.
But when we dive deeper, we learn words of the real world.
Words like legacy, accountability, and forced labor.
So next time you see a Hugo Boss suit, what will you think of it?
Does knowing the bad history of a company change the way you buy?
