Oh, okay.
Interesting question here.
When it comes to relationships, is fulfilling my parents' wishes of dating someone within our religion or being straight—very traditional parents—more important?
Or do I ignore them and do what makes me happy?
How do I navigate this?
Because I don't want to kill the relationship with my family, but I also want to be happy in my life.
I feel I can't have both.
Oh, interesting.
Interesting.
Okay, so we're kind of talking about two different things.
Thing number one is, should you date within your religion?
And thing number two is, should you be straight?
The way I would think about this, it basically just comes down to a pros and cons analysis, right?
Could you find someone within your religion and be totally happy with them?
Yeah, you probably could.
Your religion probably has a bunch of people in the world that you could be compatible with, and maybe it might be harder because the pool is smaller.
You know, you could probably find someone within the religion or not.
So it's like, what's the trade-off here?
But then the second thing, the straight thing—if you are not straight and your parents want you to be straight—what are your chances of being happy within that kind of relationship?
What's the trade-off?
It's not a binary thing that either I do what makes me happy or I do what will make my parents happy.
It's usually not that black and white.
There is usually some kind of Venn diagram overlap.
and it's up to you to figure out: is the effort it takes to find the Venn diagram overlap worth it, or not?
Just saying, when you ask people on their deathbed, the number one regret of the dying is: I wish I had lived a life true to myself, not the life that other people wanted from me.
I am generally in favor of do what you think will make you happy, not what you think will make the family happy.
Because TBH, once the grandkids come along, hopefully the family will come around anyway.
But either way, the number one regret of the dying is not: man, I really wish I'd listened to my parents more.
I wish I'd lived a life true to myself, not the life other people expected of me.
I wish I'd stayed more in touch with my friends.
I wish I had given myself permission to be happy.
I wish I hadn't worked so hard.
And I can't remember the fifth one, but they're not.
I wish I'd listened to my parents more.
Just saying.
