Hello everyone, welcome to Nihongo Potaquisu.
Hello, nice to meet you. So today, let's think together about how young Japanese people work. Yes, about their working style.
How about you, listeners?
Are you busy with work or studies every day? Well, I think many people are very busy every day. That's right, isn't it?
So, the story we're introducing today is...
a conversation on a day off between two Japanese women. Two women aged 25.
What kind of jobs do they do? One is Ayaka, who works in office administration at a manufacturing company.
The other is Hinano, who works as a shop staff member. I see. What are we going to look at in their day-off conversation? Yes.
Whether young people in Japan today...
really think about work and their own time, we'll slowly look at their true feelings. That sounds interesting.
True feelings.
In other words, their honest thoughts. That's right. First, let's see how they feel about their own jobs. Yes. How do they feel?
Actually, both Ayaka and Hinano don't hate their jobs.
Is that so?
I thought they didn't want to work anymore. No, no. I'm very careful not to make mistakes, and if someone at work is in trouble, I help them properly. Oh.
You work very seriously, don't you? Yes, very seriously.
But I have no desire at all to get promoted, in other words, to become important in the company. You work seriously but don't want to become important. Yes.
And I also have no desire to work overtime to make the company bigger. I see. You don't want to become a company leader, do you? Yes.
I absolutely hate giving up my private time for work. You're very clear about that. Yes.
I think this is like a smartphone battery. A smartphone battery? Yes. For work, you use your own energy...
only for that.
And the remaining...
you want to save it for your hobbies and days off, right? Ah, I see. That's very easy to understand.
You don't use it all for work. That's right.
But here's one question. Yes. What is it? Hinano does her job seriously and properly.
Even so, she sometimes gets anxious wondering if she lacks motivation. She gets anxious. Yes.
Even though she works seriously, why does Hinano get anxious? Hmm, that's because...
I think it has to do with the atmosphere of Japanese society. The atmosphere of society? Yes.
There's a strong atmosphere that working harder is natural, and aiming for career advancement makes you a respectable member of society.
Because of that strong atmosphere. Ah, everyone around you seems to be using 100% of their energy for work.
That's exactly right.
So people who want to work at their own pace normally look at others around them and get anxious wondering if this is okay. I see.
Because others are so hot, you feel like you're cold. Yes, you end up having that illusion.
So did they...
quit their jobs because they were so anxious? What do you think? Like living only on part-time jobs, something like that? Actually, no.
This is a very interesting point.
They don't want to quit. Yes, Ayaka had a period in the past when she had no job. When you weren't working. Yes, at that time she was of course worried about money.
But more than that, she felt that she had no value when she had nothing to do.
Ah, that must have been tough. Yes.
So she said she became very negative. For people, work isn't just about getting money. That's right.
It's a reason to get up every day, and...
it gives a sense of security that you are needed in society. So Ayaka...
says that having a work schedule...
makes every day stable and allows her to enjoy her hobbies from the heart. So being completely free is actually scary. Yes.
And on the other hand, Hinano...
she saw a tough senior at her previous workplace. What kind of senior? A senior who worked late every night with no days off. Wow, that's overworking.
...of the battery. Yes.
That senior eventually got sick and left the company. So they ended up ruining their health. Yes.
...of the battery. Yes.
That senior eventually got sick and left the company. So they ended up ruining their health. Yes.
Hinano-san saw that and
realized that even if you push yourself and ruin your health, no one takes responsibility. The company doesn't look after the lives of people who get sick, does it? That's right.
Not working isn't good for your mind, and working too much makes your body sick. Both are dangerous, aren't they? Yes.
Finding the right balance is really difficult, isn't it? It really is.
I think the two of them are desperately trying to find a range where their minds can stay stable. A range where their minds can stay stable? Yes.
It's not good to cause trouble for the company, but
there's no need to torture yourself more than necessary. I see. For them, work is
an important tool for protecting their peaceful everyday lives. A tool for protecting peaceful everyday lives, I understand that very well. Yes, then
do you think they should tell the company once they've found a way of working that suits them? You mean clearly saying things like 'I'll leave at the set time'? Yes.
'I'll work at my own pace,'
but they can't do that. That's right. Ah, so it's difficult in Japan after all.
The reason is that if you say you're leaving on time for your own time at work, people will think you have no ambition,
that's why. Ambition, meaning
they'll misunderstand that you don't have the desire to become better. Yes.
And you might get scolded for having no sense of responsibility.
I see.
They're not actually slacking off, they're just finishing their work efficiently. Even though they've done all their work seriously, just leaving early gets them criticized. Yes.
The two of them say they don't like that. That would be stressful.
So at work, they put out an atmosphere of 'I'll work harder.' In other words, it's a facade. Yes.
On the surface, they say they'll work harder,
but in their hearts, they really intend to work at their own pace. That's a very clever approach.
They're protecting themselves without fighting against the old company rules.
But in the world,
there are people who love work, and there are also people who want to put family and hobbies first, right?
Yes, of course there are. It's a bit stifling to think everyone has to work the same way, isn't it? Yes, I really think it's stifling.
It's only natural that people have different priorities in life. That's true. However,
Japanese society still has the old rule that everyone should work hard in the same way. Yes, it still remains. That's exactly why
it's very important to think critically about those old rules and to think 'others are others, I am me.' Others are others, I am me. Yes.
It's necessary to draw a proper line between yourself and other people.
That's exactly why it's necessary to completely forget about work on your days off. Yes, that's right. At the end of their conversation,
Ayaka-san and Hinano-san end their talk about work. They change the subject. Yes, and they've made plans to visit a newly opened cafe.
That's nice. On days off, they completely switch off from work. Yes.
I think just having fun is the best way to refresh. They're fully recharging a battery that's been used to 50%.
That's right.
If more young people start thinking like Ayaka-san and Hinano-san from now on, how will companies change in the future? That's a really interesting imagination.
Perhaps in a few years, an era will come where the people who go home without overtime every day are considered the most wonderful.
What do you all think? The rules of working style might become completely different.
Well, that's it for today. See you. See you.
