Hello everyone. This is Japanese Potacas and
today let's think together about work and the things we love. Yes, thank you for joining me.
It's a bit of a...
Have you ever had a favorite hobby that you turned into a job, only to start disliking it a little? Ah,
that's a common story, isn't it? That's right.
For example, suppose you love drawing and become an illustrator. Yes. But you have to draw pictures according to customers' orders every day.
And then drawing becomes painful.
That is the theme for today.
Let's look at it slowly while reading the text of the conversation between two people named Miho and Takumi. Yes.
Turning what you love into a job might be a dream for many people.
But in reality, it's not all fun, is it? That's really true. Because when it becomes a job, there is inevitably responsibility.
You get paid, after all. Today's text has many interesting points on how to keep that feeling of love alive.
Let's look at it slowly. First, let's start with the story of Miho's friend that appears at the beginning of the text. A friend's story, yes.
This friend had worked at a clothing store for many years.
Wearing beautiful clothes every day,
her job was to sell clothes to customers coming to the store. Yeah. She had continued that job for many years, but
one day she quit the store. Even though she should have been used to the job after doing it for so long,
she quit. That's right.
But it's not that she started to dislike clothes. This is an important point.
She still loves clothes even now.
Then why did she quit her job at the store?
I will explain the reason a bit more deeply. Please do.
It feels a bit strange to quit when you love clothes. She said that at first, she enjoyed selling clothes to customers at the store.
But while working every day,
she noticed her feelings changing little by little.
In what way did they change? She came to like knowing the stories behind the clothes more than selling them at the store.
The stories behind the clothes?
What does that mean? For example, what kind of factory this clothing is made in,
what kind of people are making it, that kind of story. I see, it's about the people making them. Yes.
Or things like how special fabrics were created.
She started wanting to know more about the background stories of how such clothes are made. But at a clothing store, you can't just talk about those things all the time, right? That's right.
The store's primary purpose is
to have customers buy the clothes in front of them. Indeed, in a busy store, you can't talk to customers about factories for hours, can you?
I have an analogy that I thought of here. Ah, what kind of analogy is it?
I love eating delicious food.
You might be the same. Yes, I like it too. But just because of that, it doesn't mean I want to be a chef at a very busy restaurant every day. That's a very easy-to-understand example.
Because people who like to eat and people who like to cook every day are different. That's right.
If I became a chef and kept making the same pasta for 100 customers every day in a hot kitchen, what would happen? It would surely be tough, right? Yes.
I might even come to hate looking at pasta.
The feeling of liking to eat and
the job of cooking for customers are completely different things. Exactly. I think Miho's friend realized the same thing. Yes, I think so too.
That's why her friend decided to change how she interacts with clothes. She changed how she interacts with them? Yes.
She didn't throw away clothes, she changed the place where she interacts with them.
She is now doing work that involves researching clothes deeply and processing fabrics. Ah, processing fabrics?
She changed from a job selling clothes at a store to a job conveying the charm of clothes through writing. That's right.
In that case, she can research a lot about the fabric stories and factory stories she loves, right?
By changing the environment, she can keep her love for it, right? Yes.
Thanks to changing the way she works, she still continues to love clothes even now.
What she really needed to change was the way she worked. Changing the way of working,
I think this connects perfectly to Takumi's story that comes next in the text.
Takumi used to work in photography. Takumi also loved cameras, didn't he?
What kind of photos did he take at work? It was a job taking photos of products every day. When you say product photos, what kind of things do you mean?
Products like cups and shoes.
In a white room, I adjust the lighting and take photos so that they look beautiful.
And I kept taking hundreds of similar photos every day. That sounds like a pretty tough job. Yes.
But what Takumi really loved was going outside on his days off to take photos of beautiful mountain and sea scenery. I see.
The world of photos he took for work and the photos he took for his hobby were completely different. That's right.
But here, I
had a slight question about Takumi's actions. What kind of question? If taking photos of the same products with a white background every day is so boring,
wouldn't it be easier to just quit the camera job entirely? Quit entirely?
Yes. For example, changing to a completely different job, like office work using a computer.
Using the restaurant example from earlier,
if you grew to hate making pasta every day,
you would think you want to run away from the kitchen. That's true. Why didn't Takumi quit photography completely? That is a very sharp and interesting question.
Certainly, it might be easier to change everything completely. Yes. But Takumi did not throw away his camera completely.
Because in his heart, he clearly knew that he loved the beauty of photography. You love the beauty of photography? Yes.
What he hated was not photography.
He hated the environment where he just pressed the shutter like a machine every day. That's why he didn't throw away the camera and just changed his work a little bit.
What kind of work is he doing now? Now, he doesn't just take photos himself.
He also has a job selecting wonderful photos taken by other people. He selects other people's photos? Yes.
And he also writes articles about why those photos are beautiful. I see.
He shifted a little bit from a job of just pressing the shutter himself to a job of conveying the appeal. That's right.
This way, Takumi, who loves landscape photography, can also come into contact with various beautiful photos. That's wonderful. Yes.
You don't have to start from zero.
Keep the parts you really like, and only change the methods that don't suit you.
This is the important message of this text. Keep the parts you like and change the method.
That's a really good way of thinking.
Just because it's a job, you don't have to decide between continuing or quitting completely. Yes, that's right. Now, we've talked about work so far, but from here, we'll move to a slightly different perspective.
It's about Miho and Takumi's hobby of cooking. It's an important theme to challenge yourself with new things not only in work but also in hobbies. Miho used to work part-time at a bakery.
She still loves bread and apparently makes bread at home herself. Baking bread at home is fun, isn't it?
Can she bake it well? It seems she fails often. Fails?
She tried to make fluffy bread, but it didn't rise at all, and what came out of the oven was bread like a stone. Like a stone?
That sounds really hard. Yes. But here is the interesting part.
When Miho served that stone-like bread to her family, they didn't get angry but laughed instead. They laughed? Yes.
They ate it while laughing, saying, "This is really hard."
And Miho herself, even though she failed, thinks she wants to make it better next time. The family's reaction is very warm. That's right.
Reading this story, I strongly felt the difference between work and hobbies. What do you mean?
If Miho were working at a real bakery,
it would be a big problem if she served stone-like bread to customers. That's true. She would probably be scolded by the manager and might have to quit the shop. Yes.
Because there is always responsibility in work, there is pressure that you must not fail.
You can't laugh at failure. Yes. But if it's a hobby, it's okay to fail.
Even if you make stone-like bread, it becomes a family joke, and you can immediately try again.
Having a place where it's okay to fail is wonderful. That is certainly true.
Because it's a safe place to fail, you can challenge yourself with various types of bread.
On the other hand,
how about Takumi's cooking?
Unlike Miho, Takumi is not very good at cooking. So he is afraid of failing. That's right.
He always makes the same dishes he feels safe with over and over again. He gets nervous, wondering what he should do if he makes a new dish and it doesn't taste good.
That's a feeling I understand very well.
But Takumi also has a feeling that he wants to try making something different once in a while. I see. Reading this text,
The story of when Takumi changed his photography work and
the story of Miho making new bread feel connected in my heart. That is a very important realization.
Changing jobs and making new dishes
are different in scale, but
actually involve the exact same emotional movement. In other words, does it mean stepping just a little bit outside of one's current safe place? Yes, that is exactly right.
It is scary for anyone to change everything.
If it is a job, your life will change, and
if it is cooking, you might end up with something inedible. That is true. That is exactly why
you keep the parts you like and the parts you feel secure about, while trying a slightly different approach.
This is the common pattern throughout the entire text. I see.
Takumi changing his camera work just a little bit and Miho trying a new recipe while making bread that is like a rock are the same, aren't they? Yes.
In the same way, they are enjoying a small challenge.
Because it is just a small challenge, it is exciting and fun,
and if you fail, you don't have to quit everything. That is right.
Like Takumi, you can go back to your old way a little bit,
or like Miho, you can just bake a different bread on another day. As long as you keep the feeling of liking it, you can continue to engage with it while changing its form little by little, right? Yes.
Today, I was made to think deeply about my work environment and how I engage with my hobbies. Yes.
That was a very interesting conversation. To everyone listening to this, is there a favorite hobby you want to continue to cherish forever?
I am curious. And, how do you want to cherish that important thing from now on, and how do you want to continue engaging with it?
It might be good to stop for a moment and ask your own heart. That is true.
I think that is a wonderful theme that each person should take their time to think about. Well then, that is all for today, see you next time.
