Hello everyone.
Welcome to the Japanese Podcast Journey.
Hello.
To you who always listen, let's enjoy new discoveries together again today.
Um, this time we are going to deeply explore a heartwarming true story closely tied to everyday life in Japan.
We will deeply explore it with the theme of a certain heartwarming real story.
はい。
Yes.
It's a story about life with pets in Japan, especially about rescuing a kitten.
That's right.
Not just memorizing the superficial meaning of words,
The mission of this discussion is for you to feel living Japanese within the context of a story, rather than just memorizing the superficial meanings of words.
Yes.
Through the story of a woman named Sayaka welcoming a small kitten as a new family member
we will gain a deep understanding of the latest pet situation in Japan.
Exactly.
By learning how words come to life in real Japanese daily life, your Japanese should become more natural and expressive.
That's right.
Well, first let's talk about the background of this story.
One day, a woman named Sayaka was walking along a road with heavy traffic.
はい。
Yes.
Then there, she found a very tiny kitten trembling.
Amidst the constant loud noise of passing cars, that kitten was truly frightened.
Oh, just imagining it breaks my heart.
In urban Japan there are many cars and the roads are often narrow, so to think of such a small life trembling all alone in that kind of environment, really...
So Sayaka couldn't just leave the kitten there, and she gently picked it up and decided to take it home with her.
Here is where one of today's important keywords, protection / rescue, comes in.
Hogo, rescue.
This word carries a warm nuance of protecting something in a dangerous state or in a vulnerable position in a safe place, doesn't it?
That's right.
It's a word we often hear in the news and such.
はい。
Yes.
But in this story, it means the beginning of Sayaka's very personal and deep love in having rescued this cat's life.
Well, shall we unravel this?
What surprised me most when I read this story was that
Sayaka had not decided from the beginning to keep this kitten in her own home forever.
Ah, that's the realistic part of this story.
She took the kitten home intending to find a foster / adoptive parent, rather than keeping it herself.
This word satooya, foster / adoptive parent, has become very important now in talking about Japan's pet culture.
Yes, extremely important.
Looking at the kanji for satooya, sato means hometown or village, and oya means parent.
Originally, for a human child, it referred to someone who raises them with love in place of their true parent relationship.
Someone who raises them with love instead of their parents.
Yes, that's right.
But now it is used quite naturally for animals as well.
It's a word filled with deep love, meaning not just a new owner, but a parent who welcomes them as family.
I see.
In Japan too, in recent years, after rescuing an animal,
activities to recruit foster parents through dedicated websites on the internet and bulletin boards at local animal hospitals have become very active.
Yes.
I think Sayaka at first felt like a temporary foster volunteer, hoping to find someone who would make this small life happy for its whole life.
But from that point on, a big change begins to happen in Sayaka's heart.
What's interesting here is the process of emotional change that comes from humans and animals spending time together in the same space.
A change of heart?
はい。
Yes.
Sayaka, thinking it was only until a foster home was found, fed the kitten every day, kept it warm so it wouldn't get cold, and cared for it devotedly.
As she did so, motherly love naturally welled up inside her heart.
Motherly love.
It's that strong feeling of wanting to love and protect unconditionally a being smaller and weaker than yourself.
Exactly that.
At first she was hesitating to leave it to someone else, but as she watched the kitten sleeping peacefully, relying on her,
she decided, I want to protect this kitten after all, I will become its family.
I feel that movement of the heart is so beautiful and so human.
It's the moment when her perception completely shifted from just a poor rescued animal to an irreplaceable member of her own family.
Interacting with animals can sometimes bring out strong, deep emotions far beyond what humans expect.
Listeners, have you ever felt a special emotion toward an animal you can't communicate with in words in your daily life?
You may have had an experience where you locked eyes with a dog or cat you happened to meet on the street and felt your hearts connect for a moment.
Those kinds of moments are universal, transcending borders and language barriers.
Yes, I really think so.
Now, let's look at the important first step Sayaka took after deciding to keep this kitten herself.
This is where it gets really interesting — once you decide to become family, first you give them the gift of a name.
Yes, it's like a very important ritual.
Sayaka named this tiny kitten Natsu-chan.
Natsu-chan, it has a very cute and easy-to-call sound.
There's a uniquely Japanese reason behind how this name was chosen.
That's right.
Actually, Sayaka found and rescued this kitten on a very hot day in July.
July in Japan is the start of full-fledged summer.
Yes, it's around the time the cicadas start chirping.
Yes, so she named her Natsu after the sound of the word summer, the season when they met.
I see, Japan's culture of valuing the seasons is strongly reflected in pet naming too.
That's right.
Japanese people have long often incorporated the season of birth or the beautiful natural scenery of the time into people's names.
Like Sakura for spring or Kaede for autumn, putting memories of the season you met into a pet's name is a very Japanese approach.
Because they met on a hot summer day, beside that noisy road — Natsu-chan.
A precious memory she'll never forget is packed into the name.
Now, with the name decided and the bond as family formed, next comes practical health care action.
When taking a stray cat that lived on the street into the home, there is something considered an ironclad rule among pet owners in Japan.
An ironclad rule.
はい。
Yes.
That is, above all else, first take them to an animal hospital and have a veterinarian give them a thorough health check.
This word 'ironclad rule' is also used in business, like ironclad rules for success, but it means an important rule that must absolutely be followed.
Why does that become an ironclad rule when bringing a stray cat, a cat that lived a harsh life outside, into the home?
Because animals that have survived in the outdoor environment may look very healthy at first glance, but there is a very high chance they carry invisible diseases or parasites.
I see.
Especially considering Japan's housing situation, humans and animals end up living closely together in relatively small spaces like apartments.
So hygiene management is extremely important.
That's certainly true.
In fact, when Sayaka took Natsu-chan to the animal hospital, they found fleas.
Those troublesome insects that attach to animals' bodies and suck blood.
Yes, it's very common.
So I asked the veterinarian to exterminate the fleas with special medicine.
Extermination?
はい。
Yes.
Extermination that completely removes harmful insects and keeps the living environment clean is
an absolute condition for humans and pets to live healthily and comfortably in the same house.
Natsu must have felt relieved to be freed from the itching after having the fleas exterminated.
But for Sayaka, keeping a cat was actually her first experience in her life.
Oh, was that so.
Yes. She had apparently lived with a dog before, but dogs and cats are completely different in habits and personality, aren't they?
They are completely different.
From how to feed them, to toilet training, and even how they communicate with humans, they are surprisingly different, aren't they?
That's right.
That's right, isn't it.
Dogs are animals that act in packs, but cats are originally solitary animals, so their way of showing affection is unique.
That's why Sayaka apparently researched hard every day using the internet.
For example, when you're with a cat, sometimes it makes a mysterious purring sound deep in its throat, right?
Yes, that cute sound.
Sayaka, who was keeping a cat for the first time, wondered, is this purring maybe a sign that it's in pain somewhere?
Or is it some kind of sign?
She was worried and looked it up.
A cat purring in its throat is one expression of affection often seen when it's being spoiled by its mother cat or when it's relaxed and feeling safe.
But if you hear that sound for the first time without any knowledge, you might indeed be surprised and think it's sick.
Furthermore, how should I trim the cat's sharp claws?
Or how tall should a cat tower be, and so on, questions kept coming one after another.
This is a common worry for people welcoming an animal into the family for the first time.
Yes, it's a path everyone goes through.
But I think all our listeners can relate to this too.
When you start learning a new language or culture, at first there are so many things you don't understand that you search the internet or look things up in a dictionary over and over, right?
That attitude is truly wonderful.
Not leaving what you don't understand as it is, but actively researching on your own to gain correct knowledge.
This is a very effective learning process in the information society, both for language learning and for raising pets.
Exactly.
It must be because of her deep love and sense of responsibility for Natsu that Sayaka tried so hard to absorb the correct way to raise her.
That's really true.
Love and curiosity are the greatest driving forces for action.
The reason you listeners are listening to this Japanese podcast is also because you have a passion to know and understand Japanese culture and people's ways of thinking more deeply, right?
Thinking about it from a broader perspective,
This story of Sayaka and Natsu goes beyond just a personal experience and symbolizes a major change in pet culture in current Japanese society.
What do you mean by that?
Is it something related to Japanese society as a whole?
はい。
Yes.
In Japan not so long ago, when people wanted to keep a dog or cat,
the most common option was to go to a pet shop lined with glass cases and buy a pedigreed animal with money.
Yes, it was a commonly seen sight.
But in recent years, the number of people welcoming rescued cats like Natsu or rescued dogs as new family members has increased dramatically throughout Japan.
I see.
Stray cats living outdoors as mentioned earlier, or animals that have lost their owners for some reason,
are temporarily sheltered by local volunteer groups, and adopting animals from such facilities to raise them — that's the option, right?
Exactly.
This represents a change in awareness in Japanese society.
Rather than treating life as a mere commercial product,
there is a growing ethical awareness of thinking of them as beings that society as a whole should help and protect.
That is a wonderful change.
Recently in Japan, many places called rescue cat cafes have opened in towns.
It is a wonderful system where you can drink tea while actually interacting with the rescue cats, check your compatibility, and then consider becoming a foster parent.
That is a very lovely evolution of society.
Natsu-chan is one of those cats welcomed by Sayaka-san as family within that warm chain of cherishing life.
By the way, Natsu-chan, now fully recovered at home, is said to have a very naughty personality.
Naughty?
That's nice.
はい。
Yes.
It is a word that describes children or animals being full of energy, a little mischievous, and running around with curiosity.
For N2 learners, this is a word I definitely want you to master as an everyday conversation expression.
Natsu-chan apparently runs around the house at incredible speed and plays enthusiastically with her favorite toy.
But since she is still a kitten, she doesn't have much stamina, and in the middle of playing hard, she suddenly flops down on the floor and falls asleep.
That sounds adorable.
Even though she was running wild just a moment ago,
that gap — suddenly falling fast asleep in a defenseless pose — is so cute and gives Sayaka-san the greatest healing in her daily life.
The word 'healing' is also an essential keyword when talking about modern busy Japanese society.
Stress from work and relationships.
Stress, the daily fatigue gently disappearing and the heart being calmly fulfilled.
はい。
Yes.
For an owner, there is no deeper healing than seeing a small life sleeping in complete trust and peace.
Here, for all our listeners, let me introduce an important verb you absolutely must know when talking about pets or animals in everyday Japanese conversation.
That is the word 'natsuku'.
It is a very emotional and beautiful Japanese word.
To 'natsuku' means,
a state where an animal that was initially wary gradually comes to trust through human kindness and approaches on its own with affection.
When they first met, little Natsu-chan was trembling by the roadside, frightened by loud noises.
But now, just seeing Sayaka-san's face, she purrs happily, plays with toys together, and sleeps peacefully on her lap.
Yes, this means Natsu-chan has become completely attached to Sayaka-san.
In the process of an animal becoming attached to a human, impatience is forbidden.
It takes a lot of time and kindness that expects nothing in return.
That's right.
By the way, this word 'natsuku'
can be used not only for animals, but for example, when a relative's small child is shy at first but comes to love you and won't leave you after playing together.
You can use it naturally in such situations too.
Listeners, please imagine for a moment.
Welcoming a new animal into the family involves a lot of real hard work, like preparing food every day, flea treatment as mentioned earlier, and nail care.
Yes, it comes with responsibility.
But when you pour love into them over time and the moment that animal truly becomes attached to you, you will feel a happiness so great that all your hardships will be blown away.
If you were to live in Japan, what kind of animal would you like to live with?
Yes.
And how would you communicate to get that animal to become attached to you?
Talking to them in a gentle voice every day, or enjoying their favorite games together.
Rather than imposing human convenience, thinking about their feelings from their perspective is the best shortcut to getting them to bond with you quickly.
Well, time flies when we talk about deep themes.
Let's look back on today's discussion.
A small stray cat trembling alone by the roadside with heavy traffic was rescued to a safe home by a kind woman named Sayaka-san.
はい。
Yes.
At first she intended to look for foster parents as a new family for him, but as she took care of him, maternal feelings grew inside Sayaka, and she decided to become his family herself.
Because they met in the summer of July, she gave him the lovely name Natsu,
and as an iron rule for living together, she properly took care of his health management such as flea removal at the animal hospital.
Yes.
Confused by living with a cat for the first time, Sayaka diligently researched information on the internet while continuing to pour plenty of love into him.
As a result,
the mischievous and energetic Natsu became completely attached to Sayaka, and they became a true family giving each other irreplaceable comfort — that was the story.
In today's conversation, many important JLPT N2-level expressions appeared, such as hogo, satooya, tetsusoku, and natsuku.
That's right.
These are not just lifeless memorization words for passing an exam,
They are living words firmly tied to the actual lives of Japanese people and their deep emotions.
So what does this mean exactly?
Knowledge is
not just about understanding the meaning in your head, but only when you apply it and use it in real life does its true value emerge.
Just as Sayaka looked up what it means when a cat purrs and put it into action to deepen her affection with Natsu.
I see.
So you use what you learned as a tool for real communication.
Exactly.
Learning a foreign language is the same as deepening a bond with an animal.
Instead of just listening to the Japanese culture and new words you learned today and being satisfied,
please be brave and actually try using them in your daily life, or in conversations with Japanese friends.
はい。
Yes.
By repeating practice many times,
words you didn't know how to use at first will eventually settle as your own words and become attached to you.
Words becoming attached to you, that is a very interesting and hopeful expression.
By using them repeatedly with love, the words themselves come to stay close to you.
That is exactly the same process as Natsu opening his heart to Sayaka.
Here an important question arises.
Throughout Japan, the wonderful life-valuing culture of welcoming rescued cats and rescued dogs as new family members instead of from pet shops
is spreading right now.
では、
So then,
how should our local communities
change in the future to support people living with animals like this and to create an environment where humans and animals can coexist more easily?
That is a very deep theme.
For example, further improving the network of animal hospitals you can rely on in times of need, or promoting pet-friendly rules even in apartment buildings and other shared housing.
Yes, that kind of concrete support is needed.
Or,
various approaches can be considered, such as creating local communities where first-time pet owners can learn correct knowledge so they don't have to worry alone like Sayaka did.
Yes.

and on how we should face life.
Thank you so much for always listening attentively until the very end.

if you have a chance, please use them in your conversations and make the words become attached to you.
