Right now, a Seven-Eleven owner is speaking out about the recession. It's a person named Hana-san, with monthly sales of ten million yen
and a gross profit of 5.58 million yen. That's pretty amazing. I was surprised. They're selling quite a lot, even in a recession period
but from that,
the head office charge is about 3.5 million yen, and after paying labor costs and utilities, the amount left in hand is
roughly about 300,000 yen. In some cases it falls to around 200,000 to 250,000 yen, is what he's訴ing about. Selling 10 million yen a month, and moreover a convenience store is 24 hours, right
it's quite busy, and I think the hours tied up are long, but to have only about the same income as a full-time hourly part-time staff member
must be quite disheartening
From this story, actually I also often get consultations from people who want to do a trading card shop franchise
even now people bring me such proposals. And
I also looked into it a bit, and roughly about four companies are now seen recruiting for franchises, but
I'll say it clearly
how do I put it, originally trading card shops were a business model that could make profit relatively easily
as for new products from manufacturers like that, well,
only a small gross margin is left, but
since that alone can't sustain the business, they were doing buybacks of used cards. But now that used buyback business, the market prices themselves keep going up
to put it in extreme terms, selling booster packs
has risen to almost the same profit margin as that. The money left in hand keeps decreasing. Large amounts of money are handled,
but the money left in hand is proportionally going down more and more, that's the situation
they say. And on top of that, with a franchise, of course you have to pay franchise royalty fees
In many cases, it's not a percentage, that is, not give us X percent of sales, but it's a fixed cost or something like that
but here's where
there's a pitfall: the gross profit margin on products keeps falling, and if you pay royalties here, even if it's not a percentage but a fixed cost, then you can end up with no money left in hand
which can happen frequently. It's quite difficult for products to sell out completely
Inventory remains
inventory remains somewhere, and if you keep paying royalties from there, then nothing will be left in hand
you'll easily fall into a pattern where you have to borrow from somewhere
So, for those thinking of doing a trading card business as a franchise, in this day and age you'd better not do it
