is the fourth installment of the Hokkaido series.
ついに最終回さいしゅうかいです
It's finally the final episode.
ここまで第一回だいいっかいが北海道ほっかいどうでどんなところ
So far, the first episode was about what kind of places Hokkaido has,
第二だいに回かいが旅行りょこう、第三だいさん回かいが食たべ物ものとお酒さけでした
the second was about travel, and the third was about food and drinks.
そして最後さいごの今日きょうはこれです
And today, the last one, is this.

it's the Hokkaido dialect episode.
で先さきに言いっておきたいことがあって
So there's something I want to say first,
私わたし日本語にっぽんご教師きょうしなんですね
I'm a Japanese language teacher, you see.
なので普段ふだんは授業中じゅぎょうちゅうに方言ほうげんが出でないように結構けっこう気きをつけているんです
So I'm usually quite careful not to let dialect slip out during class,
でも今日きょうは堂々どうどうと北海道弁ほっかいどうべんを話はなそうと思おもいます
but today I plan to speak Hokkaido dialect boldly.
そしてもう一ひとつ
And one more thing,
今日きょう紹介しょうかいする言葉ことばの中なかには私自身わたくしじしんずっと標準語ひょうじゅんごだと思おもっていたものがかなりあります
among the words I'll introduce today, quite a few are things I myself always thought were standard Japanese.
北海道ほっかいどう出でてからえ
After leaving Hokkaido, I'd go, 'Huh?'
これ方言ほうげんだったのって気きづいた言葉ことば本当ほんとうに多おおいですね
There are so many words I realized were actually dialect.
今日きょうはそういう話はなしをしておきますね
I'll talk about that kind of thing today.
で
So,
今日きょうの言葉ことばを知しっておくと北海道ほっかいどうや東北とうほくの人ひとと話はなしたときにえ分わかるのって驚おどろかれます
if you know today's words, people from Hokkaido or Tohoku will be surprised when you talk to them, going, 'Huh? You understand?'
日本にほんのドラマやアニメで
In Japanese dramas and anime,
北海道ほっかいどうの人ひとが出でてきたときも何なにを言いってるかニュアンスまで分わかるようになると思おもいます
when someone from Hokkaido appears, you'll be able to understand what they're saying, including the nuances.

有名ゆうめいな北海道弁ほっかいどうべんでも私わたしが使つかわないものに関かんしては私わたしは使つかいませんでちゃんと言ゆうようにします
Even if it's a famous Hokkaido dialect word, if I don't use it, I won't use it—I'll say so properly.
それではやって行いきましょう

まずは私わたしが今いまでも本当ほんとうによく使つかう言葉ことばからいきます
First, let's start with words I still use very often.
もうこれなんか方言ほうげんとかってより私わたしの普通ふつうの日本語にっぽんごです
This is more like my normal Japanese than dialect.
一ひとつ目め
First one,
ワイヤー
wire.
これは私わたしめちゃくちゃ使つかいます。というかワイヤーがないと生いきていけないレベルです
I use this a ton. Actually, I can't live without 'wire.'
意味いみなんですけどこれがまたちょっと説明せつめいしにくくて
As for the meaning, it's a bit hard to explain,
状況じょうきょうによって変かわるですね
it changes depending on the situation.
めちゃくちゃとかひどいとか大変たいへんどうしようもない
It covers things like crazy, terrible, tough, hopeless—
この辺へんが全部ぜんぶ入はいってる感かんじです
it feels like all of those are included.
例たとえばですね
For example,
わあ、いや、わいやだわ。だと、部屋へやがめちゃくちゃに散ちらかっているっていう意味いみ
'Wow, ugh, I hate it, wire.' — that means the room is a total mess.
そして
And,
ああ、なんか今日きょうはいやだったわ。だと
'Ah, today was just, ugh, wire.' —
今日きょうは本当ほんとうに大変たいへんだったっていう意味いみ
that means today was really tough.
そしてよく使つかう
And a common one,
いや、今日きょう雪ゆきはいやだね
'Ugh, today's snow is wire, isn't it.'
なんか今日きょう雪ゆきすごいことになってるねみたいな感かんじで
Like, 'the snow today is really something' — that kind of feeling.
全部ぜんぶちょっとずつ意味いみが違ちがうんですよ
Each one has a slightly different meaning.
でも
But,
わいやだけで全部ぜんぶいけます
'wire' alone covers everything.
便利べんりじゃないですか
Isn't it convenient?
でね、調しらべたらこれ北海道ほっかいどうだけじゃなかったんです
And you know, when I looked into it, it turns out this wasn't just Hokkaido
関西かんさいとか名古屋なごやの方ほうでも使つかうみたいですね。ちょっと意外いがいでした
It seems they use it in the Kansai and Nagoya areas too. That was a bit surprising.
二ふたつ目め、これもないと結構けっこう困こまります
The second one, you're in trouble without this one too
なしてとなしたです
Nashite and nashita
なしてはなんでどうしてという意味いみで
Nashite means why or for what reason
なしたはどうした
Nashita means what happened

一文字いちもんじしか変かわらないのに全然ぜんぜん

different in meaning, you know?
なしての方ほうは理由りゆうを聞きいています
Nashite is asking about the reason
なしたは様子ようすを聞きいています
Nashita is asking about the situation
会話かいわにするとこんな感かんじです
In conversation, it goes like this
え、今日きょう休やすむの？なして
Huh, you're taking a day off today? Nashite
ああ、ちょっと体調たいちょう悪わるくて
Yeah, I'm not feeling well
え、なしたの大丈夫だいじょうぶ
Huh, nashita, are you okay?
どうですか。こう並ならべるとちょっと違ちがいが見みえますよね
How is it? When you put them side by side like this, you can see the difference a bit, right?
三みつ目め
The third one
なんもです
Nanmo
これ音おとだけ聞きくと標準語ひょうじゅんごのなんもと同おなじなんですよ
Just hearing this sound, it's the same as standard Japanese nanmo
でも北海道ほっかいどうでの使つかい方かたがちょっと違ちがうんです
But the way it's used in Hokkaido is a bit different
北海道ほっかいどうではなんも返事へんじとして使つかうんですね
In Hokkaido, nanmo is used as a response
ありがとうって言いわれたときをなんもなんもなんも
When someone says thank you, it's nanmo nanmo nanmo
ごめんねって言いわれたときもなんも
When someone says sorry, it's also nanmo
つまりいいよいいんだよ気きにしないでねとかどういたしましてみたいな意味いみなんです。うんうんうん
In other words, it means like 'it's fine, it's okay, don't worry about it' or 'you're welcome.' Yeah yeah yeah
私わたしこれに返へん続つづけていうことが多おおいです
I often reply with this repeatedly
なんもなんもって
Nanmo nanmo
で
And
面白おもしろいのがなんもだけで会話かいわが成立せいりつするときがあります
What's interesting is that sometimes a whole conversation works with just nanmo
ごめん遅おくれた。あなんもなんも
Sorry I'm late. Ah, nanmo nanmo
ありがとうなんも
Thanks, nanmo
みたいな
Like that
会話かいわにはねなっているんですね。で四よつ目め
It does become a conversation, you know. And the fourth one
これは語尾ごびの話はなしです
This is about sentence endings
北海道ほっかいどうの語尾ごびというと何々なになに所ところが有名ゆうめいなんですか。例たとえばそう所ところみたいな
When it comes to Hokkaido sentence endings, ~sho is famous, right? Like sou-sho for example
でもね私わたしは
But you know, I
何々なになに
~nani nani
とか何々なになにだべえとか何々なになにだ
or ~nani nani dabe or ~nani nani da
ですさの方ほうをよく使つかいます
I often use the ~desu sa form
何々なになに所しょは私わたしは本当ほんとうに使つかわないです
I really never use ~sho
例たとえば
For example
そうだべえとか
sou dabe or
これでいいべえとか
kore de ii be or
寒さむいべえとかこんな感かんじで使つかいます
samui be, I use it like this

これも人ひとによって違ちがうみたいなんですね
this seems to differ from person to person too
何々なになに所しょをよく使つかう人ひともいれば私わたしみたいに
Some people use ~sho a lot, while others like me
の方ほうが出でる人ひともいる

北海道ほっかいどうの人ひとはみんな何々なになに所しょって言いいますっていうのは
People in Hokkaido all say something like 'nani-nani-jo', but
ちょっと違ちがう気きがします
I feel that's a bit different
5ついつつ目め
Number five

2つふたつの意味いみがあるんです
It has two meanings
1つひとつ目めはそうしたらっていう接続詞せつぞくし
The first is a conjunction meaning 'so then'
昨日きのう駅えきで友達ともだちになったんだよね。したけその子こも同おなじ電車でんしゃでさ
I made a friend at the station yesterday, and shitate that kid was on the same train too
みたいなの
like that
で2つふたつ目めはじゃねとかまたねっていう別わかれの挨拶あいさつ
And the second is a parting greeting like 'see ya' or 'later'
あじゃもう行いくわしたけねみたいな感かんじ
Like 'oh, I'm heading out then, shitate'
同おなじ
Same
言葉ことばなのに全然ぜんぜん違ちがいますよね
word, but they're completely different, aren't they?
これも日本語にっぽんごを勉強べんきょうしている皆みなさんには面白おもしろいところかなと思おもいます

じゃ次つぎには

ちょっと違ちがう種類しゅるいの言葉ことばをやっていきたいです
I'd like to move on to a slightly different kind of word
何なにかというと
What I mean is
標準語ひょうじゅんごにちょうどいい言いい方かたがない言葉ことば
words for which there's no perfect expression in standard Japanese
まず
First
いずい
izui
これは私わたしも使つかうんですけど
I use this one too, but
標準語ひょうじゅんごでなんって言いえばいいのか本当ほんとうにわかりません
I really don't know what to say in standard Japanese
近ちかいのでいくと
For something close
違和感いわかんがあるとかしっくりこない
feels off or doesn't sit right
なんとなく気持きもちが悪わるい
somehow feels unpleasant
みたいな言葉ことばですけどでもどれも
like those kinds of words, but none of them
完全かんぜんには同おなじじゃないんですよ
are exactly the same
どんな時ときに使つかうかっていうと
When do you use it? Well
目めに何なにか入はいっているとき
when something gets in your eye
服ふくの着心地きごこちがなんかおかしいとき
when your clothes feel somehow uncomfortable
何なんかが体からだに当あたって落おち着つかないとき
when something is touching your body and you can't settle down
こういうときなんですね
it's for times like these
痛いたいではないです
It's not 'it hurts'
だから痒かゆい
so not 'it's itchy'
でもない
either
その中なかの
that in-between
なんとも言いえない感かんじ
indescribable feeling
これを
this
一言ひとことでいずいって言いえるんですよ
can be said in one word as 'izui'
でね思おもったんですけど
And you know, I was thinking
こう伊い津つ
this 'izui'
を標準語ひょうじゅんごで説明せつめいしようとすると
if you try to explain it in standard Japanese
なんか面めん意味いみ感かんがあって落おち着つかない感かんじみたいにこう長ながくなるじゃないですか
it gets long, like 'it feels off and I can't settle down', right?
でも北海道ほっかいどうならあなんか伊い津つで終おわりです
But in Hokkaido, it's just 'ah, izui' and done
でちなみにこれも調しらべたら東北とうほくでも使つかわれます
By the way, I looked it up and it's also used in the Tohoku region
特とくにね宮城みやぎの方ほうでよく使つかわれるそうです
apparently it's used a lot in Miyagi

気きを取とり直なおして行いきましょう。はい

何々なになにさるです
It's 'nani-nani-saru'
これ日本語にっぽんごを勉強べんきょうしている皆みなさんには本当ほんとうに面白おもしろいと思おもいます
I think this would be really interesting for everyone studying Japanese
例たとえばね
For example,
ささったとか書かかさない
like 'sassatta' instead of 'kakasanai'
見みたことない形かたちですよね
It's a form you've never seen before, right?
教科書きょうかしょには絶対ぜったい出でてきません
It will never appear in a textbook.
でねこれいろんな
Now, this is one of those
意味いみがあるって説明せつめいされることが多おおい北海道弁ほっかいどうべんの一ひとつなんですが
Hokkaido dialect expressions that are often explained as having many meanings,
正直しょうじきに言ゆうと私わたしが実際じっさいに使つかうのは二ふたつだけです
but honestly, I only actually use two of them.
一ひとつ目めが
The first one is
そうするつもりじゃなかったのに
meaning 'I didn't intend to do it, but'
っていう意味いみで
in that sense,
あ
ah,
ボタン押ささった
'botan o sassatta'
これは押おすつもりじゃなかったのに押おしてしまったという意味いみです
This means 'I pressed it even though I didn't mean to.'
これはめちゃくちゃ使つかえます
This one is incredibly useful.
というか私わたしの何々なになにさるはほぼこれです
Or rather, my 'nani-nani saru' is almost always this one.
間違まちがってクリックしちゃったときとか送信そうしんボタンを押おしちゃったとき
When I accidentally click something, or when I accidentally hit the send button,
全部ぜんぶこれです
it's always this.
二ふたつ目めが何々なになにさないっていう
The second one is the 'nani-nani sanai' form,
否定ひていの形かたち。あ
the negative form. Ah,
なんかこのペン書かかさない
like 'kono pen kakanai'
これはこのペン書かけないっていう意味いみなんですけど、これポイントがどこかって言いうと
This means 'this pen can't write,' but the key point here is,
私わたしが書かけないじゃなくて
it's not that I can't write,
このペンの方ほうが悪わるいっていう意味いみなんです
it means the pen is the one at fault.
標準語ひょうじゅんごで書かけないって言いうとなんかまあ自分じぶんの性格せいかくを聞きこえるところもあると思おもうんですけど
In standard Japanese, saying 'kakenai' might sound like you're blaming your own abilities,
書かかさないは私わたしじゃない完全かんぜんにペンのせいにできる魔法まほうの言葉ことばです
but 'kakanai' is a magic phrase that lets you completely blame the pen instead of yourself.
ちょっとずるいかもしれませんが
It might be a bit unfair,
便利べんりな言葉ことばです
but it's a convenient expression.
でね
Now,
他ほかにもまあ使つかい方かたの中なかで
there are also other usages, like
美味おいしくて食たべ
'oishikute tabe-'
っていうまついつい食たべちゃうという意味いみがある
meaning 'it's so delicious I end up eating it.'
でもね、ここ私わたしをこの方かたたちではあんまり使つかわないですね。まあ聞きいたときに意味いみはわかりますけど
But I don't really use this one much myself. Well, I understand the meaning when I hear it,
でも自分じぶんの口くちからは出でてこない気きがします
but it doesn't seem to come out of my own mouth.
多分たぶんこれも人ひとによって違ちがうことだと思おもうですね
I guess this probably varies from person to person too.
同おなじ北海道ほっかいどうの人ひとでもよく使つかう意味いみが違ちがうっていうことなんだと思おもいます
Even among Hokkaido people, the meanings they use often differ.
でね、ここでちょっと私わたしの話はなしなんですが
Now, this is a bit about me,
私わたし日本語にっぽんご教師きょうしをやっているので授業中じゅぎょうちゅうは標準語ひょうじゅんごで話はなすように気きをつけているんですよ
but since I'm a Japanese teacher, I try to speak in standard Japanese during class.
でもこの何々なになにするだけはどうしても出でちゃうですね
But this 'nani-nani suru' always slips out.
例たとえばオンラインの授業じゅぎょうでなんか画面共有がめんきょうゆうとかするときにね、画面がめんの何なにか間違まちがってクリックしちゃったとき
For example, in online classes when I'm sharing my screen, if I accidentally click on something,
あおささったみたいな
like 'a, o sassatta'
普通ふつうに出でてしまいます
it just comes out naturally.
もう体からだに染しみ付ついてしまってるんですよね
It's already ingrained in my body.
間違まちがって押おしたじゃなくて押ささったが先さきに出でてきてしまう
Instead of 'machigatte oshita,' 'ossassatta' comes out first.
でも学生がくせいさんにえ先生せんせい何なにって言いったんですか
But if a student says, 'Sensei, what did you just say?'
で聞きかれたら
and asks me about it,
説明せつめいに困こまる気きがするのでできるだけ使つかわないようにしています
I'd have trouble explaining, so I try not to use it as much as possible.
さてここからはね子こどもの頃ころに大人おとなによく言いわれた言葉ことばです
Now, from here on are words that adults often said to me when I was a child.
なので正直しょうじきあんまりいい言葉ことばじゃないです
So honestly, they're not very nice words.
まず一ひとつ目め
First, the first one is
意味いみは
The meaning is
触さわるとかいじるです
to touch or to mess with.
今いまは私わたしはあんまり使つかわないんですけど
I don't really use it much now,
子こどもの頃ころ本当ほんとうによく言いわれました
but I was told this a lot when I was a kid.
例たとえばチョスなんて言いってる
For example, they'd say something like 'choso',
みたいなね
like that.
はい
Yes,
これ
this
めちゃくちゃ北海道弁ほっかいどうべんですね
is very much a Hokkaido dialect,
と
and
何々なになにべやが
the 'beya' part,
ね両方りょうほう入はいっていますね
both are included, right?
この意味いみは触さわるなんて言いってるでしょう
The meaning is something like 'touch', right?
です
And
でこの何々なになにべやのやが入はいるとちょっとね感情かんじょうが入はいっている感かんじがするので
when the 'beya' part is added, it feels like some emotion gets mixed in,
出でる人ひとは
so people who use it
ちょっとあるいは結構けっこう怒おこっているかもしれないですね。まあ男おとこの人ひとだと結構けっこうべやが
might be a little or quite angry. Well, for men, 'beya' is
もう口癖くちぐせになっている人ひともいるので毎回まいかい怒おこっているかっていうとそうではありません
already a habit for some people, so it's not like they're angry every time,
けどまあちょっと強つよく聞きこえるかもしれないですね。うん
but it might sound a bit strong. Yeah.
次つぎに聞きかない
Next, 'kikanai'.
これ用事ようじ語ごの話はなしを聞きかないとはちょっと違ちがうんです
This is a bit different from not listening to someone's story.
意味いみとしてはヤンチャとか気きが強つよいとか手てがつけられないみたいな感かんじです
The meaning is something like naughty, strong-willed, or impossible to control.
特とくに子供こどもについて言いいます
It's especially used for children.
でね、私わたしこれも本当ほんとうによく言いわれますし
And, I was told this a lot too,
今いまも言いわれますね。あった本当ほんとうに聞きかないながらみたいな
and I still am. Like, 'you're really kikanai, aren't you'.
そしてハンカクサイ。意味いみ
And 'hankakusai'. The meaning
は
is
バカバカしいとか愚おろかとかマヌケみたいな感かんじなんですが
something like stupid, foolish, or dim-witted.
これもねよく言いわれていて
I was told this a lot too,
今いまも言いわれますね
and I still am.
なんなんでしょうね。なんかちょっと
What is it... I guess
聴きくとか聞きかないとかハンカクサイとかまあ
'kiku' or 'kikanai' or 'hankakusai', well,
全部ぜんぶ言いわれてます。そういう子供こどもだったんでしょうね
I was told all of them. I must have been that kind of kid.
最後さいごにねちょっとかわいいですよ
Finally, this one is a bit cute,
ちゃん
occhan.
これは少すこし優やさしい言葉ことばです
This is a slightly gentle word.
意味いみは座すわるですね
The meaning is 'sit'.
ここにおっちゃんこしてってこんな感かんじで
Like 'occhan koshite' (sit down here), like that.
使つかいます。でこれ私わたしも使つかうんですけど
I use this too, but
使つかうのは小ちいさい子供こどもにだけなんです
I only use it with small children.
大人おとなに
To an adult,
ちゃんこしてとはさすがにいません
I'd never say 'occhan koshite'.
ま想像そうぞうしたらちょっと面白おもしろいんですけどね
Well, it's kind of funny to imagine, though.
でも私わたしが間違まちがったふに使つかっているかもしれない。間違まちがった情報じょうほうは教おしえてはいけないと思おもって一いち調しらべたんですけど
But I might be using it wrong. I thought I shouldn't spread wrong information, so I looked it up,
時点じてんでちゃんと用事ようじ語ごって書かいてありました
and at that point it was properly written as a dialect word.
私わたしの感覚かんかく合あっていました
My intuition was right.
でねちょっとここからが今日きょうのメインなのかなと思おもう部分ぶぶんなんです。が私わたしがずっと用事ようじ語ごだと思おもっていた言葉ことばです
And now, this might be the main part of today. It's a word I've always thought was a dialect word.

Now then, here's a sudden Japanese language question for everyone.

服ふくは着きる
you put on clothes.
ズボンは履はく
You wear pants
帽子ぼうしは被かぶる。では手袋てぶくろは
You put on a hat. So what about gloves?
はい
Yes
手袋てぶくろをはめるとか手袋てぶくろをする
You put on gloves or you wear gloves
この辺へんで覚おぼえている方ほうが多おおいのかなと思おもいます
I think more people remember it around here

北海道ほっかいどうではなんて言ゆうのかって言いうと
What do they say in Hokkaido?
手袋てぶくろを

履はくって言いうんですよ
They say 'wear' (haku) for gloves
私わたしこれ今回こんかい初はじめて知しったんですね
I just learned this for the first time this time

履はくのの方ほう逆ぎゃくになんて言ゆうのって思おもって
I was thinking, 'wear' is the opposite, what do you mean?'
そして調しらべたらはめるとかね出でてきて

What do you say for gloves?
っていうに来きた調査ちょうさがあったんですけど
There was a survey that asked this
北海道ほっかいどうや青森あおもりでははくっていう人ひとがかなり多おおいそうなんですが
In Hokkaido and Aomori, quite a lot of people apparently say 'haku' (wear)
全国ぜんこくで見みると少々しょうしょう悲かなしいですね
Looking at it nationwide, it's a bit sad
でここでわあやってしまったと思おもったのが
And here's where I thought, 'Oh no, I messed up'
私わたしは今いままでの
I've been
日本語にっぽんごの授業じゅぎょうをしてきながら手袋てぶくろはくって教おしえてしまっていたので
teaching Japanese classes all this time and I had been teaching 'wear gloves' (tebukuro haku)

Now, next, this is a dream. Throwing garbage
北海道ほっかいどうではゴミを捨すてるという意味いみでゴミを投なげると言いいます
In Hokkaido, 'throwing garbage' (gomi wo nageru) means 'disposing of garbage'
あの本当ほんとうに投なげるわけじゃないんですね。ちゃんとゴミ箱ばこに入いれます
No, you don't actually throw it. You properly put it in the trash can
でもいい方ほうが投なげるなんですね
But they say 'throw' instead
これ投なげといって北海道ほっかいどうの人ひとに言いわれたらこれ捨すておいてっていう意味いみです
If a Hokkaido person says 'nage' (throw), they mean 'leave it there' (suteoite)
で私わたしこれちょっと面白おもしろいことがあるんですけど
So I have a funny story about this
あの東京とうきょうに行いってから
After I went to Tokyo
飲食店いんしょくてんでバイトしていたことがあるんですけど、まあその日ひちょっと忙いそがしくてバタバタしてたんです。で一緒いっしょに働はたらいている先輩せんぱいに
I used to work part-time at a restaurant, and one day it was pretty busy and I was rushing around. So I asked a senior coworker who was working with me
お願ねがいしました。すいませんこれゴミだけ投なげてもらってもいいですかって
'Sorry, could you just throw away this garbage for me?'
そしたらその先輩せんぱいがわ本当ほんとうに投なげるって言いった。わほんものだって
Then that senior coworker said, 'Wow, you really throw it!' 'Wow, for real!'
なんか喜よろこんでいて
They were really happy
いやほんものってみたいな。私わたしはただゴミを捨すてて欲ほしかっただけなんですけどまさかこんなに喜よろこばれると思おもってなくて
Like, 'Wow, for real!' I just wanted them to throw away the garbage, but I never expected them to be this happy

こんな言葉ことばつで喜よろこんでもらえることがあるんだなっていうのも面白おもしろかったですね
It was kind of funny that there are words that can make people this happy
ね

これも調しらべたら東北とうほくの言葉ことばなんですね。代表的だいひょうてきな東北とうほく方言ほうげんって書かいてある資料しりょうもあってまあ北海道ほっかいどうだけではないですね
When I looked this up, it turns out it's a Tohoku word. There were materials that listed it as a typical Tohoku dialect, so it's not just Hokkaido
そしてこれ
And this one
ばく
'Baku'
意味いみは交換こうかんするです
It means 'to exchange'
例たとえば

あじゃそれとこればくろばくりこしようこんな感かんじで使つかいますか。この意味いみはそれとこれ交換こうかんしよう
Like, 'let's exchange this and that,' it's used like that. It means 'let's exchange this and that'

完全かんぜんに普通ふつうの言葉ことばだと思おもっていたので

this word 'baku' (explode)
軽かるい理解りかい
is only used for light understanding
にしか使つかわないんです
it's not used for anything else

そのお菓子かし爆ばくろうは
like 'let's explode that snack'
でも車くるまのタイヤを替かえるときにタイヤを爆ばく
but when changing car tires, you wouldn't say 'explode the tire'
とは言いいません
you wouldn't say that
ちょっとね
a little bit
ニュアンスが大事だいじになってきますね。使つかうところとかね
the nuance becomes important, you know. Where you use it and all
そして最後さいごに雨あめ
And finally, 'ame' (rain)
これはちょっと注意ちゅういして聞きいてほしいんですが
I'd like you to listen to this with a bit of caution
字典じてんで調しらべると
if you look it up in a dictionary
食たべ物ものが腐くさるっていう意味いみで書かいてあるんですが、でも私自身わたくしじしんは食たべ物ものには使つかいません
it's written as meaning food going bad, but I personally don't use it for food
私わたしが使つかうのは
what I use it for is
髪かみの毛けです
my hair
運動うんどうした後あととか
after exercising and stuff
シャワーちょっとサボった時ときとか
when you skip a shower a bit
髪かみの毛けがちょっとベタベタしてくるじゃないですか
your hair gets a bit sticky, right?
そういう時ときに
at times like that
髪かみ雨あめってるっていうんですけど
I say 'my hair is raining'

調しらべてもこの使つかい方かたは字典じてんにも研究けんきゅうの資料しりょうにも載のっていませんでした
even if I looked it up, this usage wasn't in any dictionary or research materials
なので北海道ほっかいどうの人ひとがみんなこう使つかうのかはわかないですけど
so I don't know if everyone in Hokkaido uses it this way
まあ私わたしの家庭かていだけなのかそれとも地域ちいき、ああ友達ともだちも使つかうか多分たぶん地域ちいきも
well, I don't know if it's just my family or the region, oh, friends use it too, probably the region as well
大丈夫だいじょうぶなのかなちょっとわかないですけどね。なのでこの雨あめ

famous as a Hokkaido dialect
だからといって北海道ほっかいどうの人ひとが全員ぜんいん使つかう言葉ことばじゃないっていう話はなしもしていきたいです
but I also want to talk about how it doesn't mean everyone in Hokkaido uses these words
まずこれ
First, this one
なまら
'namara'
意味いみはとても凄すごくという意味いみです
the meaning is 'very' or 'extremely'
北海道弁ほっかいどうべんとして多分たぶん一番いちばん有名ゆうめいだと思おもいます
I think it's probably the most famous as a Hokkaido dialect
でも私わたしは
but I
ほとんど使つかいません
hardly ever use it
うん
yeah
なんとなくなんですけど
it's just a feeling, but
おじさんが使つかってるイメージがあるんです
I have the image of older men using it
いや私わたしのイメージなんですけどね
well, it's my image anyway
でちょっと気きになって調しらべたら
and when I got curious and looked it up
字典じてんにこう書かいてありました
it said this in the dictionary
北海ほっかい弁べんとして有名ゆうめいだけど全まったく使つかわない人ひとも多おおい
it's famous as a Hokkaido dialect, but many people don't use it at all
実じつはそういうんだと思おもってね、ちょっとホッとした
I thought it was actually like that, so I was a little relieved
なので北海道ほっかいどうの人ひとはなまって言いいますっていうのはなんかちょっと違ちがうのかなって思おもいます
So I think saying that people from Hokkaido speak with an accent is maybe a bit different
次つぎに縛しばれる
Shibareru (next)
意味いみはすごく寒さむいという意味いみです
The meaning is that it's very cold
ああ今日きょう縛しばれるねみたいな
Ah, it's shibareru today, right?
意味いみはわかりますがでも私わたしはあまり使つかわないです
I understand the meaning, but I don't really use it myself
これもどこでよく使つかわれる言葉ことばなんですね
This is also a word that's used a lot, isn't it
でも北海道ほっかいどうっぽい使つかい方かたがて
But it's a Hokkaido-like usage, and
ものが凍こおるという意味いみでも使つかうことがあるんです
It's also used to mean that things freeze
例たとえば道路どうろが縛しばれている
For example, the road is shibarete iru
道みちが凍こおってつるつるになっているという意味いみですね
It means the road is frozen and slippery
こっちの使つかい方かたは結構けっこう聞ききますし、使つかってる多おおいのかなってイメージです
I hear this usage quite a bit, and I have the impression it's used a lot
そして
And then
怖こわい
Kowai (scary)
これ初はじめて聞きくとあのお化ばけとか見みた時ときのねホラー映画えいがが怖こわいとかのそっちをイメージすると思おもうんですが
When you first hear this, I think you'd imagine things like horror movies when you see ghosts and stuff, right?
違ちがうんです
That's not it
そしてあの北海道弁ほっかいどうべんで言いう怖こわいっていうの聞きいたときに
And when you hear 'kowai' in the Hokkaido dialect
よく疲つかれた
It's often explained to mean 'I'm tired'
っていう意味いみだと説明せつめいされることが多おおいんですけど、私わたしの感覚かんかくだと
But to me
疲つかれたとはちょっと違ちがうんですね
It's a bit different from 'tired'
もっとなんか体からだがだるいの方ほうが近ちかい気きがします
It feels closer to feeling more sluggish in the body
ほら
You know
風かぜ吹ふく前まえのあの感かんじわかりますかなんか熱ねつはまだないんだけど体からだ重おもくてなんかだるくてちょっと寒さむくてみたいな
That feeling before the wind blows, you know? Like there's no heat yet, but it's heavy and sluggish and a bit cold
あれ
That
だから北海道ほっかいどうの人ひとがあなんか今日きょう怖こわいわって言いってたら
So if a Hokkaido person says 'Ah, I'm feeling kowai today'
今日きょうはなんか体からだがだるいっていう意味いみですね
It means their body feels sluggish today
これも聞きいたら意味いみは全然ぜんぜんわかるけど私わたしはあまり使つかわないです
When I hear this, I completely understand the meaning, but I don't really use it myself
でこれもねどことかもっと遠とおい地域ちいきでも使つかわれている方言ほうげんの一ひとつみたいです
And this is also apparently a dialect used in some more distant regions too
あとねちょっと時間じかんの関係かんけいで全部ぜんぶは説明せつめいできないんですけどもこんなものもあります。テンポよく行いきますよ
And, well, due to time constraints I can't explain everything, but there's also this. Let's go at a good pace
おだつ
Odatsu
調子ちょうしに乗のるはしゃぐかっちゃ
To get carried away, to get excited
爪つめ
Tsume (claw)
で引ひっかく
And hikkaku (to scratch)
見みたくない
Mitakunai (don't want to see)
見みてもない格好悪かっこうわるい
Mitemonai kakkowarui (looks terrible even without seeing it)
よ叱しかるよりかかる
Yoshikaru yori kakaru
どうですかなんとなく想像そうぞうつくのもあれば全然ぜんぜんわからないものもありますよね
How is it? Some you can kind of imagine, and some you have no idea about, right?

パソコンを使つかっている人ひとが急きゅうにこう言いいました
A person using a computer suddenly said this

I didn't mean to, but I pressed it
これ私わたしが授業中じゅぎょうちゅうによく言いっちゃうやつですね
This is something I often say during class

これはちょっと難むずかしいですよ
This one is a bit difficult
お父とうさんが子供こどもにこう言いっています
A father is saying this to his child
なって言いってるべや。さて
What are you saying? Now then
何なんと言いってるでしょうか。答こたえは騒わわるなって言いってるでしょう
What could he be saying? The answer is "stop making a fuss," right?
ですね。チョスか騒わわるべやはでしょうですね。うん、そう私わたしが
Right. It's "stop making a fuss," isn't it? Yeah, that's what I
子供こどもの頃ころによく言いわれていたやつです

なしてじゃなくてなしたでしたから理由りゆうじゃなくて様子ようすを聞きいています
It's not "why" but "what's wrong," so it's asking about the situation, not the reason
はい、何なん問もん正解せいかいできましたか
Yes, how many did you get right?
今日きょうねあの何回なんかいか
Today, you know, a few times
これは東北とうほくでも使つかいますっていう言葉ことばを私わたしが言いったんですけども実じつはこれ理由りゆうがあるんです
I said that this is a word also used in Tohoku, but actually there's a reason for it
北海道ほっかいどうで昔むかし本州ほんしゅうのいろんなところから人ひとが移うつり住すんできた場所ばしょなんですね
Hokkaido is a place where people migrated from various parts of Honshu long ago
その中なかでも東北とうほくから移うつり住すんだ人ひとが多おおかった歴史れきしもあって
Among them, many came from Tohoku, and there's also that history
東北とうほくと共通きょうつうする言葉ことばが本当ほんとうにたくさんあります
So there are truly many words shared with Tohoku
いろんな地域ちいきの人ひとが集あつまると通つうじないと困こまるじゃないですか
When people from various regions gather, it would be a problem if they can't understand each other, right?
なのでだんだんだんだん標準語ひょうじゅんごに近ちかづいていったとも言いわれています
So it's said that it gradually became closer to standard Japanese
だからの札幌さっぽろのあたりの言葉ことばだと結構けっこうね標準語ひょうじゅんごに近ちかいです
So in the Sapporo area, the dialect is quite close to standard Japanese
あともう一ひとつだけ
Oh, and one more thing
北海道ほっかいどうの人ひとって北海道ほっかいどう以外いがいのことをどうがいって言ゆうんですよ
People from Hokkaido call things outside Hokkaido "dōgai"
文字通もじどおり北海道ほっかいどうの外そとですね
Literally, outside Hokkaido
まあと内地ないちっていう言いい方かたもあります
Well, there's also the expression "nainchi" (inland)
じゃあちょっと最後さいごにねちょっとだけ話はなさせて欲ほしいものがあるんですけどもううんうんうん
Well, at the end, there's something I'd like to talk about just a little bit, um, um, um
今日きょういろいろ話はなしてきましたけど結局けっきょく一番いちばん思おもうのはこれです

もう外そとに出でてからとか探さがしてからでした
after I went outside or looked it up
ねこれが第一回だいいっかいで話はなした気きが高たかいっていう話はなしと同おなじなんですね

自分じぶんにとっての普通ふつうは自分じぶんでは見みえないです
What's normal to you isn't visible to yourself
そして今いま私わたしは日本語にっぽんご教師きょうしをしていて

This is also quite a strange feeling — both are my own words, but I use them differently, you know
