So, I'm going to read you a short mystery story which I've written,

and then I'm going to talk a bit about the verb tenses we use to tell a story or to describe a narrative.

So, I'll give you some examples and explanations of those tenses.

We'll look at how you can use different tenses to describe events in the past.

Okay, so narrative tenses.

Now we often talk about things that happened in the past, don't we?

You know, it could be, for example, if we describe what we did at the weekend in a conversation, or maybe if you're talking about a holiday that you had.
例えば、会話で週末にしたことを説明したり、休暇について話したりする場合などですね。
It could be if you're just telling an anecdote, you know, describing a funny story that happened to you, or something like that, or even just sharing a memory of something.
自分に起こった面白い話などの逸話を語ったり、思い出を共有したりする場合もあるでしょう。
We talk about the past all the time.
私たちは常に過去について話しています。
When we talk about things that happened in the past, we obviously use different tenses in order to explain the sequence of events.
過去に起こったことについて話すとき、出来事の順序を説明するために当然異なる時制を使います。
We use three main tenses to talk about the sequence of past events, and those are past simple, past continuous, and past perfect.
過去の出来事の順序について話すために、主に3つの時制を使います。それは過去形、過去進行形、過去完了形です。
So, past simple obviously is just the simple past form of the verb.
さて、過去形はもちろん、動詞の単純な過去形にすぎません。
For example, we met on holiday.

We talked about art and music.

We fell in love.

I asked her to marry me, and when she said yes, I kissed her passionately on the lips.

So those are just examples of past simple tense.

Then past continuous tense, which is formed with was or were plus an ing verb.

Often we use that in combination with past simple in a sentence.

For example, we were talking about my new Swiss bank account when she suddenly pulled me close and kissed me again.

So obviously, there the past continuous sentence was we were talking about my new Swiss bank account.

So that's past continuous.

Then the third one was past perfect, and that is had plus a past participle.

When I arrived at the airport, I realised that she had stolen my wallet and passport.

That's past perfect.

So had plus a past participle.

Past participle is just the third form of the verb, obviously.

So in this case, it's she had stolen.

Stolen is the past participle of the verb steal.

Now I'll explain these tenses in more detail later, and I'll talk about how we use them and the pronunciation of those tenses.

But now, just listen to a short story which I've written.

It contains the three narrative tenses I've just described.

As you listen to the story, try to notice which tenses I use and when I use them.

Now there is a tape script of the story and definitions of some of the words and expressions that you might not know.

Okay, so here's the story.

Now, just before I read the story to you, I would like to explain a couple of words or expressions which are in the story that you might not know.

The first one is the River Thames.

The River Thames.

That's just the name of the river that runs through London.

The next one is a full moon.

A full moon.

Obviously, the moon is the.

It's kind of.

It's not a planet, but it's like a.

And it comes up every night.

The sun comes up during the day, and the moon up at night.

A full moon is when the you can see the whole moon, so it's like a big white circle.

That's a full moon.

Next one is a few pints of beer.

A pint of beer.

Well, a pint is the size of of beer that you get in a pub here in in the UK.

We serve beer in pints.
ビールはパイントで提供します。
A pint is is basically about half a liter.

Okay.

The next one is steps or stairs.

Obviously, we use steps or stairs when we go up and down.

We use them to go from the first floor to the second floor.

You walk up the steps or walk up the stairs.
階段を上る、ステップを上ると言います。
But we also get stairs or steps in other places.

In my story, there are some steps next to the water, next to the water's edge,

right on the river bank of the Thames, and that's the next expression: the water's edge.

It's just another way of saying the edge of the water, the water's edge.

The next one is an owl hooted.

Now, an owl is a bird which comes out at night and it's got big eyes, right?

So, an owl hooted means an owl made a noise, a bit like this.

Okay, so that's an owl hooted.

The next one is I rubbed my eyes.

Now, that's just when, for example, when you wake up in the morning and your eyes feel itchy and you just rub your eyes with your hands.

And often, if you if you see something amazing, you you might rub your eyes because you can't believe it, right?

The next one is a splash, a splash, and that's the noise of when something drops into the water, and it sounds like this.

The next bit of vocabulary is to grab something.

The next bit of vocabulary is to stretch.

Now we we stretch before we do sport to prevent injuries.

We also stretch when we're tired in the morning, and we also you also might stretch your arm in order to grab something that's quite far away.

If you can imagine you're sitting at the table and there's a cup of tea, but it's a bit too far away.

You'd stretch your arm to grab the tea.

Right.

So that's to stretch, and then finally the expression "What on earth is it?

What on earth is it?
What on earth is it?（一体それは何なの？）
and that just means what is it?

But we use on earth in order to emphasize the question.

Just means what is that, but emphasized.

We also use other expressions like that.

So, what on earth is that, or what the hell is that?

Just ways of emphasizing that question.

Okay, so here is the mystery story for you.

Try to hear the different tenses that I've used.

The name of the story is the mystery of the man and the moon.

Last night, I was walking home next to the River Thames when something strange happened to me.

It was late at night, and I had had a long and difficult day at work.

There was a large, full moon in the sky, and everything was quiet.

I sat on some steps very close to the water's edge, and looked up at the big yellow moon, and wondered if it really was made of cheese.

I felt very tired, so I closed my eyes, and after a few minutes, I fell asleep.

The wind was blowing, and an owl hooted in a tree above me.

I rubbed my eyes and started to get up, when suddenly I heard a splash.

I looked down at the water and saw something—something terrible and frightening, and unlike anything I'd ever seen before.

Something was coming out of the water and moving towards me—something green and strange and ugly.

We're going to look at some narrative tenses, bit of grammar for you, ladies and gentlemen.

And so, like I said before, we're looking at narrative tenses: past, simple, past continuous, and past perfect.

So, how do we use these tenses?

Let's see.

Well, let's begin with past simple.
では、過去形から始めましょう。
So, this is used to explain the main events of the story in sequence.
これは、物語の主な出来事を順番に説明するために使われます。
So, we use words like then.
だから、thenのような言葉を使います。
And after that, also first and finally, we use those words to link up the sequence.
そしてその後、firstやfinallyも使って、その順序をつなげます。
So we'd say things like, "So this happened, then this happened, after that this happened, and finally this happened." Right?

So something like, "I finished work, then I went to the pub, after that I had a few pints of beer, and then I sat down by the river.

After that I fell asleep.

Then the moon moved behind a cloud.

We can also use conjunctions to link these things up.

For example, we we probably when is the most common conjunction.

For example, we'd say things like when I woke up, an owl hooted, or an owl hooted when I woke up.

Okay, so we link we can link those things together like that to express that perhaps they one happened immediately after the other one.

Okay, so basically past simple, the basic sequence of events in order, right?

But often we we need to describe a slightly more complex sequence of events.

Perhaps, for example, when one action starts and continues, and then another action interrupts it.

So, in that case, we would use the past continuous tense, and this is used to describe a longer or a repeated action.

And it's often used to describe the general situation at the beginning of a story, right?
そして、これは物語の冒頭で全体的な状況を説明するためによく使われますよね？
For example, I was walking home when something strange happened.

So, I was walking home is past continuous, and it sets the scene.

It kind of gives you the basic situation at the beginning of the story.

I was walking home when something strange happened.

Another example would be: I was driving my car yesterday, and it was raining, and I was listening to the radio,

and I was looking out of the window when suddenly a UFO landed on the road.

Okay, so you can see past continuous just sets up the scene,

and then we use past simple to to describe a quick event, like the UFO landed, for example.

We can also use past continuous to to sequence events, when it's combined with the past simple, right?

So the past continuous is the long or repeated action which is interrupted by the short and quick past simple action.

For example, the green hand was moving towards me, when suddenly there was a blue flash and a man jumped onto the stairs next to me.
例えば、突然青い閃光があって、男が私の隣の階段に飛び乗ってきたとき、緑の手が私に向かって動いていました。
Okay, so the green hand moving, you can imagine it moving slowly, right?
さて、緑の手が動いているのを、ゆっくり動いていると想像できますよね？
That's why it's past continuous because the green hand was moving towards me slowly.
だからこそ過去進行形なのです、緑の手がゆっくりと私に向かって動いていたからです。
If it was past simple and I said the green hand moved towards me when there was a blue flash, that means that
もし過去形で、青い閃光があったときに緑の手が私に向かって動いたと言ったら、それはつまり
the movement of the hand was much quicker and it actually happened at the same time that the blue flash happened.

So that's not actually what happened in the story.

So the green hand was moving towards me when suddenly there was a blue flash.

The past continuous action started first.

It continued, and then it was interrupted by the past simple action, and then it either stopped or it kept going.
