What if one small, fluffy animal was holding an entire ocean ecosystem together?
Sea otters are way craftier than you might think.
Stick around because what you're about to find out might just blow your mind.
Keep watching to find out more about seaweed and sea otters galore.
Sea otters spend most of their lives in the ocean, hunting, eating, and sleeping in the water.
And because they're such social animals, they often hang out together in a group called a raft.
When sea otters snooze, they float on their backs.
And to keep from drifting too far out to sea, they sometimes float in kelp forests or forests of large brown seaweed.
Did you know that seaweed is a type of algae that grows in the ocean, and it uses the sunlight to create oxygen, just like the plants we have on land?
Otters use the giant seaweed, which grows as tall as a three-story house, as an anchor.
First seaweed power up collected, kelp grip.
But that's not the only way sea otters stay together.
Would you believe that sea otters are known to cuddle in their sleep?
By napping close together, they can make sure no one drifts away.
And then there are baby otters called pups, who can float as soon as they're born.
That means mama sea otters have to keep a very close eye on their pups so they don't float away.
But how can she keep an eye on a pup when she needs to go hunting for food?
What's a mama otter to do?
She might tuck her pup up on a rock on the shore,
or she may even wrap her baby in seaweed, just like a kelp sleeping bag, but slimier and stickier.
Otter sleepover time.
Pups have the ability to float from the moment they're born.
So when a mama goes hunting, she wraps her pup in seaweed or puts them on a rock on the shore while she grabs a bite.
We've collected our second power up: seaweed swaddle.
Besides playing babysitter to sea otter pups, kelp forests also supply plenty of food for hungry otters.
The otter's absolute favorite thing to eat is the sea urchin.
A sea urchin is a round, spiny creature that likes to eat seaweed on the seafloor.
Try saying "spiny sea urchins" five times fast.
Because urchins love kelp so much, they can actually wipe out entire underwater forests if their populations get too big.
Luckily, the otters' massive appetites provide an important balance to the ecosystem.
Sea otters love to munch on sea urchins, which keeps the urchin population in check and saves the kelp.
But otters aren't the only ones at the buffet.
Other hungry animals like sea stars, lobsters, and octopuses love to eat urchins too.
Awesome!
Let's collect our third power up, urchin cafe.
Did you know that sea otters are one of only a handful of marine mammals that use tools?
That's right.
They can lift and flip over big rocks on the ocean floor,
and once they find their favorite, the sea otter stores the rock in a loose fold of skin under its arm and pulls it out to crack open hard shell prey like clams.
Talk about fine dining with a view.
We've unlocked our last power up, shell smasher.
So, why do sea otters float in seaweed?
Because the kelp keeps them safe, and they help do the same in return.
Otter, urchin, and kelp—each one plays a part in keeping the kelp forest in balance.
So, what if one small, fluffy animal was holding an entire ocean ecosystem together?
Turns out that's not a what-if.
That's just a Tuesday for a sea otter.
Scientists call otters a keystone species.
That means they're so important to the ecosystem that without them, it could fall down like a too-tall block tower.
No otter, too many urchins.
Too many urchins, no kelp forest.
Every little creature is needed to keep this ocean home healthy and balanced.
Tiny, fluffy, floating on the water, and holding an entire underwater forest together.
