We've had other dog and cheetah companions, but what's unique about this pair is that they were put together younger than any other cheetah/dog combination that we had.

BARBARA PhD: Both the baboon and the bush baby are infants.
And normally each one would be nurtured by an adult, but all they've got is each other, so you have slightly bigger infant, the baboon, kind of playing the role of mother to the slightly smaller infant, the bush baby.

NARRATOR: In the wild, Dina would be drawn to her own troop's babies, a likely factor since Bushy is small.
BARBARA PhD: Female baboons are fascinated by infants their whole lives, and what she would be doing in the wild when she was six months old or a year old in addition to playing with her friends, she would be going around trying to peer at all the little babies in the group and touch them and so on.

Like she can be in the nurturing role, but not all the time.
She's not paying attention to the bush baby and focusing on the baby the way she would if she were really the mom and I think that might be hard on the bush baby 'cause I suspect that what the bush baby wants is to just be the baby all the time.
NARRATOR Whether Dina's playing the role of mom or best friend, she remains protective over bushy.

BARBARA PhD: But baboons are extremely social.
They live in troops of anywhere from 25 to 150 animals.

Bushy won't get much bigger.
Dina will.

NARRATOR: A leisurely walk can turn into a game of chase, and Harky loves to include Lammie for fun.
ANRI: Harky at the moment is easily a ton.
They'll hop around.
They have this very funny hop that they do, so Lammie does it, Harky does it and they'll run up and down.
So that's when we usually keep our distance because Harky running can be dangerous.
NARRATOR: All that running can only mean one thing, Bath time!

Does this animal duo look familiar?
Remember Ruuxa, and his canine bestie, Raina.
JANET: This is a cheetah game, Ruuxa.
The dog's totally beating you.
There you go.
NARRATOR: Amazingly, they aren't the only cheetah-Rhodesian ridgeback besties.
Meet Pancake and her best friend Dayo.
SARAH: Pancake's favorite thing about Dayo is just that companionship.
When she gets playful, she just wants to run and wrestle.
And Dayo's up for it.
NARRATOR: Sarah's the carnivore supervisor at Wildlife Safari, a local zoo and cheetah conservation facility.
SARAH: Cheetahs in general just stole my heart long ago.
They're just amazing, amazing animals.
Can you sit?
Good girl.
NARRATOR: While cheetahs shouldn't be kept as house pets, there's a good reason why Pancake lives at Sarah's house with her best buddy, Dayo.
SARAH: We noticed Pancake started dropping weight, which is the first sign that there's a big problem.
So, we knew at that point Mom wasn't producing milk.
Pancake was hungry, crying all the time, so we pulled her at four days old to hand rear.
NARRATOR: Raising a cheetah cub requires expert knowledge, a lot of TLC and very little sleep.
SARAH: Hand rearing Pancake, um, from day one was 24/7 around the clock care.
I woke up every couple of hours having to bottle feed her.
NARRATOR: But without a sibling, Pancake needed a four-footed companion to keep her company.
SARAH: We also wanted her to have a long lifetime friend that she could grow up with.
NARRATOR: But who's the right fit for a cheetah cub?
SARAH: We chose Dayo, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, specifically for several reasons.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are one of the few large breeds that have the exact lifespan of a cheetah.
They also get about the same size, 80 to 100 pounds, just like a cheetah.
So they'll be a good matchup physically as adults.
NARRATOR: Born on the same day as Pancake, Dayo was the perfect match on paper.
But would they get along in real life?
SARAH: I was very nervous cause, of course, Pancake, our little baby, our little princess.
So we all kind of held our breath and just threw them together.
And it was basically love at first sight.
They instantly started playing and cuddling and Pancake was following him around like a little shadow.
Literally what his name means is "joy arrives," which it did for Pancake on the day he got here.
SARAH: Between six and seven weeks is the strongest, most imprinting time for bonding.
And so I think because we were able to get them together at that point, they literally believe that they're like from the same litter.
DR KATY: While domesticated cats have learned to put up with humans, cheetahs are wild and instinctively shy.
So dogs make helpful companions because cheetahs model their happy-go-lucky behavior and this puts them at ease in captivity.
NARRATOR: Today it's clear that these two pals have bonded.
And Pancake can hold her own against rambunctious Dayo.
SARAH: Kittens like to wrestle and play.
Even though I'm with Pancake 24/7, she still needs more of a litter mate companion just for socializing skills, um, wrestling, playing.
NARRATOR: After their morning run, it's time for these unlikely friends to go to work.
SARAH: When Pancake and Dayo turn six months old, which is only less than two weeks away, it's kind of making me sad, they will start living full time at Wildlife Safari.
Their companionship's going to be really, really critical and important at that point.
Pancake would be on her own if it wasn't for Dayo.
And she would literally go from sleeping with me every night, being with me 24/7 to by herself at night, living in an outdoor enclosure by herself.
So they're going to be complete comfort zones for each other and really make that transition really, really smooth.
NARRATOR: Dayo's more than just a friend.
He's Pancake's partner as she trains for an important job representing her species.
SARAH: We decided to raise her to be an ambassador for her species, meaning she would grow up to be leash trained and available to go out into the public to do educational talks and school assemblies.

They want to please their human, their owner, and so Pancake has kind of picked up on that.
And she's actually learning much quicker than some of our other cheetah ambassadors from following Dayo's lead.
NARRATOR: With her dog friend at her side, it's time for Pancake to take a stroll through the park to get used to different environments and people.
SARAH: This is important for a lot of different reasons.
They are learning new people's faces, vehicles drive by them, new smells, new sights, new sounds.
NARRATOR: Visitors are amazed at this duo's incredible and unusual friendship.
FEMALE: That's amazing.
It's so cute.
It's a great idea for the companionship 'cause dogs love that too.
SARAH: People get very excited when they see Pancake and Dayo.
Um, I think the curiosity of species exhibits always really perk people's interests.
NARRATOR: Dayo's calm demeanor always helps when they're out and about.
SARAH: Dayo loves people.
He wants to just run up and give everyone a big lick on the face.
So Pancake's watching how comfortable he is and how calm he is even with little kids running around, and it's actually helping her grow up as a calm cheetah without having those instincts to want to run away or be fearful.
NARRATOR: With another lesson under their belt and the day winding down, this unlikely couple gets to toy around once more.
SARAH: Pancake and Dayo are best friends.
They are like brother and sister in many, many ways.
They want to be together 24/7.
They just kind of fit each other's needs really well.
They will be together for the remainder of their lives.
NARRATOR: Because life with a best friend is the best way to live.
