In our solar system, we have eight planets orbiting one sun, and only one of those, as far as we know, provided the right conditions to produce life—that's us.
But in the rest of our galaxy, the Milky Way, there are predicted to be at least one hundred billion stars, each of which could have their own orbiting planets.
So surely, those same conditions leading to life on Earth should exist on at least one more planet.
But how do we find out?
This is the RI Science Podcast from the Royal Institution, and this month we're answering that very question through the lens of an extremely exciting mission from the European Space Agency called Plato.
The testing of this mission was just completed successfully and carried out inside a piece of kit first built right here at the RI almost two hundred years ago.
I spoke to Plato's lead project scientist Anna Harris and electronics engineer Alister Winton to find out how Plato is hoping to uncover more planets outside of our solar system.
Anna and Alister, thank you both so much for dialing in today.
Where are you?
Where are you both joining from?
We are joining from from the Netherlands, and this is the the largest center of the European Space Agency, and it's called ESTEC.
You are both heavily involved in the Plato mission from ESA, and the the tagline, if you like, for this mission is to discover and study terrestrial exoplanets in orbits in the habitable zone of Sun-like stars.
This Is maybe something we need to unpack a little bit.
So I wanted to start with some definitions from this mission statement to get a bit of a clearer picture of what the mission is aiming to do.
So, firstly, and maybe most importantly, exoplanets.
What are they, and why do we have an interest at all in finding them?
Exoplanets are planets that are orbiting stars that are different from our sun.
Every time that we look at the sky and then we see stars, then now we know that in average, almost all stars have planets around them, and then these what we call exoplanets, and we are very interested in knowing about them because, of course, we want to understand if there are similar planets to ours or how different they are, and to put our solar system in context.
Secondly, what makes an exoplanet terrestrial?
Well, we define it approximately as a planet that has the size and mass similar to the size and mass of the Earth, and it means that the density is also similar, and the composition can be well like in the Earth, such as silicates, rocks, and also that has an atmosphere that is really not dominant, like having almost of the size a hydrogen or helium atmosphere or so.
So this object is terrestrial, is similar radius, mass, density to Earth.
The specific exoplanets that we're interested in for this mission will be ones orbiting Sun-like stars.
What makes a star Sun-like?
Yeah, again, similar to how we define terrestrial planets.
So a star is similar to the Sun if it has radius and mass that is similar to the Sun, and also that has a temperature that is relatively similar to the sun, so we are not looking at stars that are much colder than the sun, or much warmer than the sun, or much larger and and older than the sun.
So that's why.
So we're basically we are limiting in terms of these parameters how we define a sun-like star.
And what then defines the the habitable zone that these orbits are in?
Habitability is a very complex concept with many elements, but in exoplanets we define the habitable zone in a relatively simple way.
Basically, we define it as the area around the star, the region around the star, where if there's a planet, the water can exist in liquid form on the surface of the planet.
Which means that it depends, of course, of the temperature of the star and how far the planet is from the star.
And in stars that are warmer, so then the habitable zone is a little bit farther because then the Earth has to be at the right temperature, not to be either in vapor or in or in ice.
But then in planets in sorry around stars that are colder than the Sun, so then the habitable zone is closer.
So that's why habitable zone is the area where the temperature is right to have liquid water on the surface.
So we'll get more into the details of how this space telescope will be investigating and identifying these exoplanets because there are a lot of different methods you can identify exoplanets with.
So we'll get into the details of that in a bit.
But Plato is the M three mission in the Cosmic Vision program from ESA, which has been running since two thousand and fifteen.
What are the goals of this program more broadly, and where does Plato kind of fit into the ecosystem of that program and and the other missions that are a part of it.
Yes, the Cosmic Vision program is a long term plan of the European Space Agency, and in particular of the Science Directorate.
And initially, it was supposed to last between two thousand and fifteen and twenty five, but now it has been extended to at least ten years more.
So we have several missions that will extend until that period, and it has very broad objectives.
But indeed, wants to address some of the main questions that we have in both science, astronomy, planetary science.
So one of the main questions that the Cosmic Vision plans wants wants to address is what are the conditions for planet formation and the emergence of life.
We also want to understand how our solar system works, and we want to know much more about the plans that we have in our solar system, we also have a very particular and important objective to understand much better the laws of physics that, yeah, basically control the universe, that existed the universe, and then we are of course still trying to find answers.
And I think it will take indeed some time until we have all of them of how the universe originated and what it is made of and how it evolved.
These are the main questions that the Cosmic Vision program addresses.
Both of you work in quite different areas of the Plato mission, so I'd love to know how each of you first became involved with the mission and what that journey looked like for you.
Well, well, I all started okay.
So then I, I'm a scientist, an astronomer, and I started working with Plato even before it was selected as an M3.
so they're going to go through the candidate mission for the entry opportunity, and therefore I started with the scientists that propose the mission to define the science that indeed the mission should be doing and prepare the requirements and the definition of the mission, such that the engineers then can take over and start building the mission and define the operations.
So that's why my role is indeed interfacing between the scientific community, the scientists that propose Plato, and then there are the the consortium that is composed now from I think more than 800 or 900 scientists, and we are indeed yeah making the bridge between this group, the engineering teams here at ESTEC, and therefore it's quite quite an exciting job I think because you can see both sides now.
You can see the scientific part.
With all the new ideas that are coming in, with the preparations that are necessary to operate the spacecraft and to point to the right stars and so on, and then indeed the engineering world, where it is quite fascinating.
I joined the project almost 10 years ago now.
In fact, I was working previously on ExoMars, and that came up for 10 years in orbit around Mars in October this year.
So at that time, that was just as Anna was talking about.
This mission adoption had been foreseen, and the project teams were being built at that time.
So there was a few of us came from ExoMars, there was a few of us came from Laser Pathfinder.
We formed this team and we took over the the basic running of the entire procurement and the project management.
So initially, of course, it's the writing of the specifications and the issuing of the invitation to tender to industry, then the evaluation of the proposals, and eventually the negotiating with the the prime contractor.
So in our case, it's OHB that won that contract.
So we've been working together since 2017 in developing the equipment for the spacecraft, through to very recently, well, in the last year, when the spacecraft was more or less complete and was brought here to SSEC, and then we started the environmental test campaign at that stage.
And my involvement all along has been particularly on the electronics aspects, the electrical systems, in particular the communication systems.
So the antennas, the transmitters, the receivers, and so on, but also the onboard computers, some of the other electrical systems on board, including the antenna, which has been quite an interesting project in its own right.
Alisa, you mentioned some of the missions that that you were working with previously that kind of led you to Plato.
All of these space missions never just come out of nowhere.
It's always leading on from questions previous missions have then left unanswered or learnings from previous missions that have then opened up ground for another mission.
What are some of the the previous missions that have maybe been investigating exoplanets in not as much detail that then Pose the questions that Plato is now trying to answer.
What were its kind of predecessor missions?
One of the previous missions that I did work on was Gaia, and Gaia was a astronomy mission which was mapping the the galaxy, all the stars, or I don't think a billion stars or something like that.
And of course, we used the Gaia catalog to identify which stars are of particular interest to us.
More related to exoplanets, the actually the first mission that was devoted to the observation of exoplanets was in a in a previous program, so it was not in Cosmic Vision, but it was an Agnes mission of the French space agency, in collaboration with ESA.
That was called Corot.
And Coro was using a similar method as Plato, and found hundreds of exoplanets.
But very interestingly, Coro found the first terrestrial planet, actually that we know, and it's not like the Earth because it's an exoplanet that orbits very close to its star, and it's really, really very has very high temperature.
It's really hot, but at least was the first discovery, so we knew indeed that there are terrestrial planets that we can observe with this method.
And then afterwards, then there have been missions at NASA that happened setting the basis for what Plato is doing.
And the first one was Kepler, and the second one is Tess.
Tess is still in orbit, and both also used the transit method.
And Kepler discovered a large number of thousands of exoplanets, and Tess is now looking at the whole sky.
also finding finding more.
What we have now currently ESA that is also operating is Keops, and Keops is a is a small mission that indeed belongs to the Cosmic Vision program.
And what it makes it different from the other ones is that Keops is following up planets that we know are they are already we know they exist, so it's looking at them to find the parameters with better precision that has been determined by other observatories or other missions.
In terms of the spacecraft itself, Plato is made up of twenty six telescope cameras.
Twenty four of these are are quote unquote normal cameras, and then two of these are fast cameras.
And within each of these are four charged couple device or CCD detectors.
And each of these cameras is is gathering images which are eighty one point four megapixels.
So all together.
You'll be getting two billion pixel images for the entire telescope, which is incredible and is actually the highest ever for a space mission, which is seriously exciting.
What will this increased resolution show us?
What does this cumulative two billion pixel image?
What what could we be expecting to find from this?
Well, interestingly enough, we are it's not the spatial resolution or angular resolution that we are winning or getting better with with this, because the pixel size of plate is relatively big.
But what it makes it special with all these two billion pixels is that we can get a combination of covering a large area of the sky together with having enough sensitivity to detect the small planets that we want to find that are similar to Earth.
And with all the electronicity, was also enough cadence.
That is, we get enough data per minute or from previous missions.
So actually, this is very important because I mentioned in the Kepler.
I mentioned TESS, and they have made wonderful discoveries, still making as we see with the data every day.
But the combination of being able to observe a large area of the sky with the sensitivity allows to detect exoplanets around brighter stars, and that is what makes Plato different from other missions.
So we will be able to detect and characterize exoplanets around stars that are bright enough, such that we can determine their parameters with better precision, and also we can do the follow up on the ground on observatories on the ground and on other observatories in space.
So that's why this large number of cameras and large number of pixels is indeed to obtain these both characteristics.
That actually, well, another one should be added that is not dependent on the number of cameras, which is the duration of the observation.
Then we also stay on the field for at least two years in order to be able to detect exoplanets in the habitable zone of starlike stars.
What we're really doing is because if you imagine that's a huge image, and we're not taking photographs of two gigapixels and sending these images down to Earth.
That's not the way it works.
What we do, in fact, is we preselect a few hundred or a couple of hundred thousand stars that are of interest over this huge field.
And then we look at the pixels around that star, so maybe a three by three or four by four image.
We call these images.
So of course there are much fewer images that we're downloading than full frame images, which are just not practical in terms of the the data link that we have.
So how are these cameras actually distributed?
Are they static or do they change direction?
And if they change, how regularly do they change?
These these cameras are completely static.
So we have four rows of six cameras, as Anna said, pointing over this large field of view.
And we steer them by steering the entire spacecraft.
And as Anna was saying, because we want to be able to detect small fluctuations in the light from the star as a planet goes in front of it.
And if you imagine that the Earth goes in front of the star, our star, if you're looking at it from some distance.
we will see a little dip once a year.
So in fact, we want to stand, sit there and stare at an area of sky for one or two years at a time, and then if we want to have a look at another area of sky, we move the entire spacecraft.
So you've both touched on this a little bit already, but Plato will be using the transit method to investigate exoplanets, which is what you were just describing, basically, Alice.
But how exactly does this method work in comparison to some of the other methods that you can use to investigate exoplanets, and why transit is by far the most popular and successful in terms of the exoplanets that it's identified?
So why why is that?
Why is it the the kind of best method to use in this context?
Well, with our current technologies, the transit method is indeed the most efficient and most effective.
to find exoplanets in general, and in particular also planets that are relatively small in comparison to the size of the star, like like the Earth, for example.
So actually, what most of the exoplanet detection methods are not direct methods because exoplanets are very difficult to observe because of the well the contrast of the light between the star and the light of the exoplanet, and this means that what we normally do so far, except for a few exoplanets, up now we are indeed detecting with direct imaging is to look at the star.
So we look at the light of the star in order to know if an exoplanet is around.
This is what we call it indirect method.
It's an indirect method, and it is the transit method, an indirect method in the sense that we look at the light of the star and we see how the light of the star changes because of the presence of an exoplanet, and how do we do this?
Indeed, we stare, we stare at the at the stars, and well, we look at the variations.
And when we see that there are periodic dips in the light of the star, that of a certain depth and a certain duration, that can correspond to the presence of an exoplanet that obscures the the star when it passes in front of it with respect to us, then we can identify it as a planet candidate, and then consider it for for further studies.
Is the transit method indeed is It is very efficient because you look at the light of the star, and with our technology now, allows to detect these these small dips in the light that are indeed, as we say now, of like an Earth-like planet in front of a Sun-like star that is the depths around 84 parts per million actually.
So then it's very very small, and well, this is what it makes it popular.
Let's put it this way: is really the method that has given more exoplanets in number, the one of us given the highest number of of detections.
And also the interesting point is that once you detect the exoplanet with the transit method, it gives you a measure of the radius of the exoplanet very precisely.
It also tells you the orbit, how the orbit is, the inclination of the orbit.
If there are variations of the transit times, then it can indicate that there are other planets in the system, and that you can also measure the masses of the planet and other planets that may be in the system, and therefore is a very powerful method.
So to discover with our current technologies new exoplanets and also to characterize them, it gives us a lot of information.
And afterwards, there are other methods that indeed we will also be using with Plato.
Because once we have detected an exoplanet, we will actually do follow up on the ground and do the characterization of the mass of the exoplanet when there are no transit variations in the transits we have observed.
Is there a ballpark number of exoplanets that you would be hoping Plato would find?
Well, we will be detecting planets of large number of sizes, so yeah, from large Jupiters to planets as small as the Earth.
And then we have calculated based on the studies of previous missions that we will be able to detect in the thousands of exoplanets, and we will be able to characterize them in also in radius and mass, many of them.
But when we go to the exoplanets like the Earth around Sun-like stars in the habitable zone, actually we don't know how many of these planets exist.
We don't know what is the occurrence rates we say around stars like the Sun of exoplanets like the Earth.
So this is a very unknown number.
We have some indications, but in the literature you can find that there's an occurrence of hundred percent.
So then maybe all of the stars have indeed a planet like the Earth, or only maybe one in a hundred stars have planet like Earth.
So there's really a disagreement among the scientists so far.
But well, I mean, there's certain conversions in in some groups that it could be around 20 or 30 percent or 40 percent.
And then in this case, we will be able to observe tens of planets like the Earth around satellite stars.
So if we can achieve this, so if the satellite indeed performs as we expect, and then the occurrence rates are in these ranges, so we hope that we will be able to discover and characterize properly with radius, mass, and age.
That maybe we can also talk about the age part and the astrophysicsology a little bit.
So indeed, of of exoplanets that that are similar to ours.
So then, if we really can can meet this As you just mentioned, the age of exoplanets is really interesting and really important, and provides a lot of information about exoplanets.
So, how does that investigation follow?
What does that look like?
Trying to determine that age, and is it similar to identifying the ages of other planets as well?
Yeah, actually, the the ages of stars, because the age of the star and the age of the planet that orbits the star is normally very similar.
So, by measuring the age of the star, then we we can approximate the age of the planet.
Difficult parameter to determine.
So, for many of the stars, even the brightest ones, still in the sky, then we have very large error bars of the the age of the stars because it's quite a complex process, and only if you have certain type of observations, you can make a better estimate of this, so what Plato will be very powerful in respect is because since we are indeed staring at the star, but we are looking at the variations of the star, we will not only see periodic variations in case there are exoplanets, but we will also see these variations that are due to the oscillation of stars.
So actually, all stars oscillates, and these are due to sound waves that are propagated inside the stars that become in resonance, and then these resonance modes tell us about the properties of the star: the radius, the mass, the structure, are also tell us about how old the star is.
So by looking at the oscillations and applying models, we will be able to determine very precisely the age of the stars that we are observing with Plato, of at least a very large number, and for the ones that we cannot detect the oscillations so precisely.
will allow us to improve our modelling of stellar evolution in such a way that we can apply this to the terminators better the ages of stars even if we cannot detect them directly with astroseismology.
So that's why this is another fascinating area where Plato will be able to do amazing contributions.
So a really important step in the launch of space missions is passing the electronic testing.
Which, Alister, this is an area that you're really involved with.
And for Plato, it was announced on the 20th of July this year that all the electrical systems on board the spacecraft are safe and ready to launch into space.
So congratulations, first of all.
I'm sure that's a huge win for the teams.
This testing was carried out where you are now at STC, and has quite a nice link with the RI actually because the tests take.
place in a massive, a nine-meter-high Faraday cage, which people who are familiar with the RI will know.
Faraday is our kind of poster boy, and the Faraday cage is obviously named after Michael Faraday.
He first made a Faraday cage here in 1836, so a long time ago.
But Faraday cages are used in a massive variety of environments because they essentially protect whatever is inside that cage from electromagnetic fields.
Why is this a part of the electrical testing process, and what what did that testing process look like, and did it all go to plan?
Yes, so indeed here at RI we we do have in fact we have three Faraday cages here, but the one that we were using earlier this year was the Maxwell chamber.
So indeed, this is as you mentioned a nine-meter-tall chamber.
I think it's something.
like 50 meters deep and something like 10 meters wide.
And the spacecraft, to give you an idea of the scale, the spacecraft is something like 3.5 meters by 3.5 meters by 4 meters.
So when it's sitting in the chamber, it's it's quite impressive.
It is a para dike indeed, which means it has metallic walls, and so the radiation cannot the electromagnetic radiation cannot get in and cannot get out.
But the walls are also covered in pyramid shaped absorbers.
So this is to avoid any reflections inside this inside the chamber.
Any stray radiation.
In fact, it's more than just stray radiation because we deliberately switch the antennas on, and of course we want to absorb that radiation.
There are two or three main reasons that we do such a test, apart from confirming to everybody and proving to everybody that the spacecraft is totally functioning and will be will perform well in space.
we also need to prove in front of the launch authority that we will not interfere with the launcher.
So this is we we want to measure the the emissions from the spacecraft when it's in the launch configuration.
The launch configuration is most of the equipment actually on the spacecraft is not fully switched on.
So it's just the essential equipment: so the receiver, the computer, the power system.
And we measure using test antennas within the chamber and the spectrum analyzers and other equipment, which is outside the chamber in another sealed room.
In fact, it's also a Faraday cage where we keep the test equipment.
And there we want to check to ensure that we we are not radiating any emission into the sensitive receive band of the rocket of the launch the launcher.
It is clear we we're not allowed to upset their their signal.
Likewise, they shouldn't upset our signal or our spacecraft.
In fact, when we're on the launchpad, of course we're not transmitting or receiving; we're just sitting there waiting to be taken to space.
But nevertheless, we are switched on, and we want to ensure that we we are safe and that nothing untoward happens.
So, of course, what we then do is radiate our spacecraft with the equivalent environment that we would see on the launchpad.
So that's not just the the emissions from the the rocket itself, but also the environment because there are the communications equipment is there.
So we prove that our spacecraft is not sensitive to that.
So the that was the first phase.
So that's the the launcher compatibility.
And I'm pleased to say that we were fully compatible with the Ariane six launcher, and we look forward to launching them early next year.
Then the other thing is the cell compatibility, or the auto compatibility.
And there we want to make sure when we're in space, so after we've launched and separated from the from the spacecraft, we're performing our nominal mission.
We have to make sure that our transmitters do not interfere with the scientific instrument, and likewise, the other equipment on the spacecraft, including the scientific instruments, the cameras, and so on, they don't interfere with our uplink, so our receiver.
Otherwise, if we have a degraded performance on the on the uplink and downlink, then then we're in trouble.
So When we're in the chamber, in fact, this is the only time where we are able to remove all the test caps and all the test equipment from the spacecraft, leaving us sort of free space environment.
We have a test antenna some distance from the spacecraft, and we will transmit to it and receive from it, and we will prove that everything is working when the spacecraft is fully operational, up and running, doing all its tricks.
So the testing that we did in the Faraday cage, Rudy, was the last of the environmental tests that we performed.
So when the spacecraft first came here in September last year, the first phase was and first steps was to integrate the solar array to the spacecraft that came separately.
Then we went onto the shaker, then into the acoustic chamber.
So this simulates the violent ride on the rocket, on the noise from the engines.
So of course, during all of these tests, we are performing electrical tests.
We we also want to check that that things perform nominally.
So during the launch, of course.
Then after that, so that was just the TLM of the last year.
The beginning of this year, we went into the Tvac chamber, so the thermal vacuum chamber, and this simulates what space looks like.
So the extremes of temperature, high temperatures, low temperatures, and complete vacuum, of course.
So the spacecraft spent almost a month in the Tvac chamber and were testing everything constantly there.
So the the RF communications, the data handling system, the payload, and that that was a huge electrical engineering task in its own right.
Only then, once we'd done all of that and we had shown that the performance was what we expected and the functionality was all there, then the last test indeed was the environmental test or the the ENCE test.
Hoping that this all goes to plan and you're able to launch on your expected timeline, what is then the timeline for Plato reaching orbit and starting to collect data?
Hopefully, we launch in March next year.
From French Guiana, crew will take us heading towards the L two point, so the Lagrange point, which is a couple of million kilometers.
If you draw a straight line from the sun to the Earth and continue out there, it's about between one point five and one point nine million kilometers away.
So on the launch day, the launch itself, we have this first phase which we call the lope, which is essentially the rocket takes us up, and after about an hour and a half or so, we are released from the launcher.
We are then on our own.
So within the very first few seconds after separation from the launcher, we shall start transmitting, and hopefully we'll see a signal on ground.
And this then becomes the real start of the mission for us.
The next few minutes are quite critical because at this stage, where the spacecraft is spinning, we're running out of the battery.
So we have to, and this is all autonomous.
The spacecraft will then de-spin and deploy its solar wings and try to acquire the Earth.
And it points towards us.
So this all happens within the first tens of minutes or so.
Then, of course, there's a whole series of tests that we have to do: the commissioning of the spacecraft.
We have a journey out towards L2 that takes us 20 days or something like this.
On the way there, we shall calibrate, for example, the antenna, which is something I'm really interested in.
So we have a steerable antenna, and we want to ensure that when we say point it to the Earth, it really does point to the Earth.
So this is part of part of the the service module or the spacecraft core calibration and commissioning.
And of course, we we wish to switch the the payload on as well to ensure that it is puncturing and survives this rather.
Extreme launch environment that we we see when we're on top of the rocket, of course.
Then I think we have something like 90 days worth of payload, or in total commissioning of the of the payload and spacecraft before we hand it over to the to the scientists.
So I think we're on orbit after about 20 20 to 30 days, and then the the full commissioning after about 90 days.
Of course, I mean we get data immediately after after separation.
We get low low rate housekeeping data, telemetry that shows us that everything is functioning, and as we get further away, as I mentioned, we start using the the rest of the equipment.
So again, as I mentioned, the high gain antenna.
We need this to get The higher data rates back back to that, and of course, when we start to do the commissioning of the of the telescope, it's when we start to have serious data volumes coming down.
The second characteristic of Plato that indeed, then we get the data for three months, and we download the scientific data.
Indeed, we start coming during these three months of commissioning and performance verification phase, because we will be observing planets that we know that they are already there by other missions, in order to see how everything works and then calibrate.
So there's indeed a lot of work there.
Eventually, with some periodicity after the rotation of the spacer, we will also download in full frame images.
But then this will only be for calibration.
But it may be maybe one of the the first images that we will be showing.
And then, indeed, then once the PV phase or the performance verification phase finishes, then we start the routine operations.
And the routine operations, so that we have funded, is for four years.
But indeed, is every three months the data is consolidated because indeed is the periodicity of the rotation of the spacecraft.
And then we expect to start delivering data to the public in June 28.
But maybe we can do it in in March 28.
But so then still, it will be some time until indeed we gather the data, we process it, we make sure that the processing, both on board and on the ground, is is done properly in order indeed to distribute the data to the community and yeah.
So then the further steps can be done.
Where are you both hoping to be on launch day?
Do you think you'll be in French Guiana at the launch site, or is that still TBC?
For me, it's still a little bit TBC.
I hope to be on the launch pad.
I haven't been to a launch from French Guiana.
That would be—I know launches are super exciting, and I would really like to be there.
But my real job will be to check to see that the telemetry that we're getting from the spacecraft is exactly as we expect, and that the performance in these first few hours is in line with expectations.
And if there are any issues, I'm there to help to.
So, any any problems?
And of course, to do that, I have to be at the operation center in Darmstadt at ESO.
Yeah, in my case, it's also EBC.
I hope I can go to Fresnoyana, but otherwise, indeed, we have also a very big event at ESO in Darmstadt, where the operation center is of the spacecraft.
And okay, we still haven't decided who will be where, but both sides are very important.
But of course, I mean, yeah, to be in Guayana closer to the launch event is very exciting.
Yes.
はい。
Once Plato has hopefully identified, as you said, in in the realm of thousands of these exoplanets, how do we then go on to study those that we would like to study further?
Yes.
はい。
Actually, we will.
I mentioned already it before shortly that for our mission, we consider that it's an integral part.
Of Plato, the following up of exoplanets on the ground to determine the masses.
So, because we really aim at really the term, well, determining if the planet is terrestrial or not, and if it's not terrestrial, yeah, what it is made of, and we want indeed to to confirm as many planets as possible.
Because one of the issues of the transit method is that there are sometimes false positives, so we want to remove those.
So that's why already as integral part of Plato, we will be observing on the ground, and this is led by the consortium of scientists.
So this also will involve Plato a lot of these exoplanets with another method, which is the radial velocity method that provides the mass of the of the planet.
But the advantage of Plato is because we are aiming at finding exoplanets around bright stars.
Many of these exoplanets, of course, we want to know also the composition of these atmospheres, and we have, well, several missions.
We have JWST, for example.
So maybe that some of the planets that Plato finds will be followed up with JWST in order to find indeed what is the composition of the atmosphere, because this we cannot do with Plato.
We can only determine if there's a large hydrogen in the atmospheres, but not the composition of the individual elements.
And then also we have another mission which is called Ariel, that is also part of Cosmic Vision, and its aim is to determine the composition of exoplanets, the atmosphere of exoplanets that indeed are around bright stars.
Because in order to do these measurements, you need always a lot of photons, and that's why these the planets that Plato will discover will be very useful.
There will also be other observatories on the ground that will do measurements of possible, yeah, atmospheres of exoplanets that we discover, like the Extremely Large Telescope, which is a telescope that this will be a European Southern Observatory that will have around 40 meters diameter, so it's really a huge impressive telescope.
And the most interesting thing also, or something that we are looking forward, that very far in the future, is indeed the atmospheres of planets like the Earth.
So with all these facilities that I mentioned, it will still not be possible to to determine the atmospheric composition of our Earth-like planet around Sun-like star.
For this, we need the next generation of missions.
And well, this that's why there are several studies.
There's in NASA the available world observatories that would address this.
Then also we have a mission in Europe that is being proposed by scientists.
Also, it's still not in the plan of ESA, which is called LIFE, and that these missions have indeed the aim, have the objective to be able to determine if there's a biosphere around an Earth-like planet or around a Sun-like star.
And then, what are again I said?
This is the next generation, which will come hopefully in the forties, I guess.
But yeah, it's it's what all exoplanet scientists, of course, are really looking forward to, because in addition of all the exciting discoveries that we that we will be making, so then indeed to to go this far would be really fantastic.
Well, Anna and Alister, thank you so much for joining me from ESTEC today.
