I'm Layla from BiteSizeJapanese 😊
How are you?
This podcast is a podcast where you can learn natural Japanese as if talking with a friend.
In this episode, "our
spending habits"
we'll talk about!
What kind of things do you all think
you should spend money on?
People think quite differently, don't they. Oh,
the way people save money also really
differs from person to person.
So, what do you all think
you should spend money on?
For me,
I,
myself and
my family
's life,
より
to make it more
stress-free
and more comfortable
I like to spend money
for that purpose.
If we can live with less stress and comfortably,
generally we feel happy,
we feel even happier, right?
So, money doesn't equal happiness, but
with money,
もっと
more
to make life easier
by being able to do that, with family
spending
we can have more time
you know. And stress decreases,
I think it leads to more happiness.
So, for those kinds of things,
I spend a lot, well, not a lot
but,
looking at my own
income and savings
I'm the type who spends money.
For example, talking about something I bought recently,
generally, I like to spend money on my dad, but
recently, for my dad,
I bought an electric bicycle.
Originally my dad had a regular bicycle, but,
my dad, every day,
to the gym pool
he goes,
You're going by bicycle, right?
From that house to the gym pool it's 2 or 3 km
and it's all uphill. My dad had knee
surgery
and his knee is
bad.
だから、
So,
climbing that 2-3 km hill all the way on a regular bicycle
would be bad for my dad's knee, so I bought an electric bicycle.
With an electric bicycle, on your knees and body,
with less strain
you can climb hills, right? So I think going to the pool has probably become much easier for my dad now.
I really love spending money on things like that.
Also, recently I bought a sauna for my father too.
This is, you put a tent inside the house and inside the tent you can do sauna
できる、
it's a product that lets you do that,
but
My father, his body
is quite, how
should I put it, his body is in bad shape and
sauna,
I knew that sauna was really good for him.
So, I thought it would be nice if he could
use the sauna more frequently, and
then, I found a small online
tent sauna for sale, so I bought it.
This too, really,
was very good for my father's health, his physical condition. So,
spending money on things like this is
my
joy.
Could it be done even better?
When I think that,
I really love thinking about how I could solve it.
I really like thinking about that.
そして、
And,
when I spend money,
recently, as much as possible,
even if it's a bit more expensive, I try to buy things I can use for a long time, and use them with care.
I've come to think that way.
How about all of you?
When you buy something new,
do you choose the cheapest thing, or considering performance
and durability, do you choose something that's somewhat expensive but
works properly and can be used for a long time?
This is pretty important, isn't it?
For me,
I want to choose things I can use for a long time.
In the past, I
used to buy cheap things and often made mistakes.
My little sister is like that too,
my sister still always picks the cheapest thing, but
recently,
what my sister failed at was
cameras.
My sister,
needed a camera for work.
Since a smartphone camera wouldn't work, she was told "
please bring a proper camera" and
my sister,
at a camera shop
a 10,000-yen
camera.
Well,
10,000 yen is cheap, for a camera.
Then,
that camera's
performance was so bad that, for example, with that camera
when you take a photo of documents,
you can't read the text on the documents from the photo. It's hard to read. That much, only photos with bad image quality
it could take. So,
she paid 10,000 yen and
bought a camera, but that camera couldn't be used for work.
She bought a camera she doesn't use for 10,000 yen,
isn't that a huge loss, she lost 10,000 yen. So,
when buying something new, think it through properly, like can I use it for a long time?
とか、
or,
is it durable?
I think it's really important to research a bit and think before buying. Also,
recently what I've
been careful about is,
when going to
dentist.
there's treatment covered by insurance, and treatment where insurance can't be used.
With insurance treatment, it becomes 70% off, so you can get treatment cheaply
できる
I can do it
but,
treatment you can get with insurance
is just the bare minimum necessary treatment.
But, if you treat without using insurance and
pay the full amount, all of the cost yourself,
since you're not limited to what insurance treatment offers,
you can choose better treatment.
で、
And,
of course that becomes much more expensive, but
でも、
still,
in order to use your own teeth
for a long time,
Without using insurance, getting better treatment, even if it's expensive,
getting treatment that's good for my teeth
is important
I've been really thinking that lately. I also, in the past, had trouble with my own teeth
when I got a cavity,
at first I had it treated with insurance,
a crown
thing,
what?
歯は
tooth
で
tooth
I had a cavity, and where they shaved it down
new plastic or,
a crown
they put a crown on it, but,
it really kept coming off, and under the crown
it got cavities again.
I went to the dentist,
without using insurance,
to better
after I had them switch it to a ceramic crown, those troubles went away.
So, at the dentist,
even if it costs money, I want good treatment
That's what I really think. I value that quite a lot.
But, my sister and my dad,
they really hate spending money
like "
we have no money," that's what they think. There's no money at home so
"we always have to choose the cheapest thing,"
they really think that, so
they always end up choosing the cheapest thing.
How about all of you?
How is it for you?
Please let me know.
あと、
Also,
your way of spending money and your sense of money
being different from other people is something that happens often, I think.
For example,
have you all experienced this too?
with a friend
when you went out to eat,
your friend
had booked a super expensive restaurant
and, like, you
felt a bit panicked. Don't you have things like that?
I,
actually had something like that recently.
With a friend,
in Japan
I went for afternoon tea.
Like, I went to a cafe
and had cake and
cookies, and then... and I drank about 3 cups
of black tea, I guess?
At checkout
I was shocked.
How much do you think it was?
One piece of cake, maybe two cookies?
I ate, and drank one cup of tea.
How much do you think it was?
3,500 yen!
やば！
That's crazy!
I thought, "Huh?
Why, I don't get
how this costs 3,500 yen."
And the tea was,
just a tea bag, right. So, "
え？
Huh?
" I thought, I couldn't believe it.
I would never book a cafe like that myself. But, well, my friend had booked it.
So 3,500 yen for that...
I just couldn't quite believe it.
Well, things like that happen sometimes.
Well, I've never experienced anything crazier than this, though.
On the other hand, with my little sister,
in a different sense,
our sense of money doesn't match.
My little sister is really
stingy
so "stingy" means a personality of not wanting to spend money at all.
Because my sister is stingy,
when we went out together before
when it got to lunchtime, I said "Let's go to a restaurant"
and she said "
No no,
convenience store onigiri is enough" and I was like "Huh?
でも
But
I'm kind of tired, so let's go into a restaurant and sit down and eat something" but she said "
No no, if we go to a restaurant it'll cost at least 1,000 yen, right? But if we buy two onigiri at the convenience store it's 300 yen
or so
so let's go to the convenience store"
I thought, even between me and my sister, how we use money is different
This problem of your sense of money differing from others
I feel like this exists between you all and Japanese people too
For example,
in Japan when friends get together
and have a party at home
quite often,
they split the bill - "splitting the bill" means,
splitting the bill - "splitting the bill" means,
It's about everyone who came there splitting the cost and paying, splitting the bill is common
I talked about this the other day
on a podcast, and then "
no, that's wrong" like "no no,
in my country, if you invite friends to your house then it's natural for the host to pay for everything" "
asking guests for
money is kind of rude"
I got a comment like that
well, I thought that's certainly true
but,
in Japan
when having a home party,
for example
like a takoyaki party
or a hot pot party
there are quite a lot of parties like that
in other words, it's not like the host
cooks everything
and treats the guests
instead,
first everyone goes to the supermarket together, buys ingredients, and then goes straight to a friend's house
there, everyone
makes and eats hot pot or takoyaki together, like that
it's that kind of party, but
I
in my experience, for those takoyaki parties, hot pot parties
you know, parties where everyone cooks together
when having that kind of cooking party,
we split the bill
I've only ever split the bill
what would you all do?
well,
I wonder if that happens in your countries?
I wonder?
please let me know if you'd like!
Japanese people, when it's between friends, splitting the bill is
quite common I think
I mostly only have girl friends so I only know girls' perspective, but
between girls,
it's almost always splitting the bill
however,
at work (
when a senior (senpai) and a junior (kohai) go
to eat together
when a boss and
a subordinate go to eat together
in cases like that
the older person
for the younger person
treating them, in other words paying for them, is quite normal
I think
So finally, let's talk just a little about savings
Everyone,
Are you saving money?
As for me,
I'm working hard at saving
But actually, I only became able to save really about 2 or 3 years ago
Until then, my income was really low
Well, but I like spending money, so I often spent it on things I and my family needed,
so I couldn't save at all
Really, after my income increased,
I became able to save. You know, something really funny happened recently,
It's about my father's savings. Where do you all save money?
Probably in a bank account or something, right?
Actually,
when I went back to Japan recently and saw my father,
my father's
cash
savings
I found them
My father is bad at cleaning, so I was cleaning his room. There was so much trash, and I was throwing it away, and then,
inside a shelf,
there was some cash,
this super thick, how many cm was it?
an insanely thick bundle of cash, I think it was over 10cm
I was like, huh?
I thought, "What is this!?"
and I got excited,
and counted it
They were all 10,000 yen bills,
and I counted up to 1 million yen. There were 100
bills, so
and then I got tired and thought,
No, this is
about 5 million," I probably didn't count it all, but,
looking at the thickness
it was probably about 5 million
5 million yen,
and in cash,
I'd never seen that before
It's crazy.
I'd really never seen it before. I was so
happy,
but when my father came home, I asked,
"What's with this money?"
Then,
my father,
for these past 10 years,
little by little
little by little
My dad had been saving it up, apparently
his smartphone
he couldn't use it well,
he's analog, you know
he's bad with apps and digital stuff, so,
cash
he had apparently been saving it
Having a large amount of cash at home is, well,
dangerous, right?
Because if a thief broke into the house, it would be stolen
and if there was a fire, it would burn up
Well, but,
my father had apparently been saving for 10 years
I really thought my father
had almost no money saved
so,
I was really surprised. "
Why were you doing this?"
When I asked him,
well, you know, more than 10
years ago, the apartment my father lived in
when I was still
in high school, at our house
debt collectors came, he said. "
By 'debt collectors,' I mean
people who try to
collect debts, right? I mean, my
mother
が、
—
my mother
had been sick for a long time,
going to the hospital, but before she got sick, so probably nearly 20 years ago
she did online shopping,
and probably didn't have enough money in the bank, so
it became debt. Credit card debt.
それ
And
neither my father nor my mother noticed, and for about 10
years
that debt
was left there, apparently
The interest
was high, so
I think the original debt was probably a small amount, but over those 10 years,
because of the interest
due to
the debt became 6 million yen, apparently
The debt
just wouldn't...
you know, neither my father nor my mother knew about it
それで、
And so,
One day, at home,
あの
that
man came and said, "
Can you pay your debt?"
he apparently came to say
and then, at that time, my father really used all his own savings and repaid 6 million
yen, apparently
really
At that time, already
there was debt repayment and my mother's
hospital
hospitalization costs
and treatment costs and various things, so we really had no money and it was tough, so
After that, as much as possible,
she decided to save little by little
それで、
And then,
あの
um
she saved cash little by little and it became 5 million yen, apparently
Yes, something like that happened
No, honestly, saving that much money in cash,
saving it
is dangerous, I think, so I already put it in a bank account, because I thought it was risky
No, but,
I was surprised
My father is the type who doesn't spend money on anything
like he wears the same clothes for 10
years or 20 years or 30 years, and even if the clothes have lots of holes,
he wears those clothes to go to the pool, so he's really an unusual person
My father's income is
very low,
he gets rental income
from it, but
after paying taxes and such,
after paying
his income is 2.3
million yen,
he said
だから、
So,
from this,
he pays the apartment rent,
and pays for food
well, probably my father only spends on the apartment and food and
pool fees or so, but
to save 5 million in 10 years with that,
I thought that's crazy. If it were me I'd definitely spend it all. So, well, people who can save
are amazing, aren't they
My husband Jack is also the type who's really good at saving
Jack,
when he was working as an English teacher in Japan, his income was
about 4 million yen every year
About
nearly 1 million yen of that
was used for taxes and pension,
and insurance, well, it was an amount he absolutely had to pay
But still, Jack saved 1.6
万まん
million
円えん
yen
とか180
or 180
million yen every year, he was the type who just didn't spend money at all
Of course, when we go on trips together
or his favorite alcohol,
or meals,
he would spend money on things like that, but other than that he didn't spend,
なんか
like
he was able to save almost half of his salary
Of course, at that time he wasn't paying rent
Not paying rent is huge.
If he had been paying rent
I think it would have been impossible
Plus, if it were Tokyo rent or something
I really think he wouldn't have been able to save, but
yeah, so
I think people who can save money are amazing
I've also been trying hard lately
to be careful to spend money only on necessary things as much as possible
Even if I think "I want this," I ask myself "No wait,
can I manage without it?"
and if I think "I can manage without it,"
then I don't buy it,
and also,
I don't want to have too many things in the house as much as possible, so I try not to buy things as much as possible
Minimalists are cool, aren't they? I'm not a minimalist, but
I think minimalists are cool, so well, as much as possible,
things
I try not to buy them, except for things that are really necessary and make life more
convenient
I try not to buy them
そう、
Yeah,
well, that's how it is
